Tour de Paris

  As I lifted my road bike up onto the bike rack it strikes me, “When is the last time I rode this bike?”. It’s so light. Whether on road or off, I’ve been riding my mountain bike now for the longest time. Touring has had my interest lately. A sturdier frame, the mountain bike a better platform for loaded panniers plus myself. That and my riding partner as of late only owns a mountain bike. Yes, the Felt F95 has been idle for quite awhile. That was going to change tomorrow.   It was dark and still as I pulled up to Rusty’s house. At 5:30 in the morning, most people in this neighborhood were still skipping through the meadows of Sleepytown. While most slumbered, four friends loaded up Rusty’s 4Runnner with bikes and gear before hopping in and heading towards Paris, TX.

As close as I’ll be to these guys all day

  Clear skies surrounded Paris as we readied ourselves for a morning of fast pack riding. The sun had announced itself. It wasn’t yet ridiculous, but the temperature was definitely on the rise. Water bottles full, we rolled to the start. As bikes and riders packed the road, Rusty, John, Kevin, and I meandered our way towards the front. It was telling. They planned on sticking with the leaders. So, what was I doing? Like a fool, I’ve rolled right up towards the front with them. Too late to reconsider my poor decision making, the ride has started.

     As expected, Rusty launches like a bullet out of a gun. We are not likely to see him again until the drive home. As the rest of us accelerate at a more human pace, I put myself on Kevin’s wheel. Staying in a slipstream is the only chance this cycle tourist has of staying with these guys for 35 miles. Other riders join our group making up a mini peloton of about ten riders. The drafting gives me the false impression that I can keep up with John and Kevin. For eight miles this inaccurate thought process grows in my mind. “I can ride with these guys” Then I take my turn pulling at the front. Without a rider in front of me to cut the air, I feel like a parachute just opened up behind me. I pedal harder in an attempt to to keep the pace the same. My legs heat up quickly. “Do your share” I tell myself as pain sets in. The group tucks in behind me. Unfortunately, I cut a wide path in the air. It’s only for a couple of minutes, but it takes it’s toll and my pace slows. John pulls past me to take over pulling duties. I blend back into the group to try and recuperate. One rider after another slips past me. I find myself at the back of the group in short order. Still blown up, I can’t hold the final wheel. I can only watch as it pulls away. Losing the draft, my fate is sealed. Or is it? A moment later, another group catches me. The ability to draft again is a most welcome feeling. The feeling changed to nauseam as again I was pushing harder than my body cared for. Legs that had gotten use to 8mph were now cranking out 18mph and my body was revolting. Again I drop off the back. A rest area is a welcome oasis. Pickle juice and bananas would be an odd combination on most days. Hot and beat down, they are a delicious pair today!  I will suffer a bit more before the energy from the banana/pickle juice concoction are absorbed into my body.

 As I feel better, I pick my pace back up. FINALLY I am enjoying this type of riding again! Fast and responsive, road bikes will eat up the asphalt if you have the legs for it. My legs are making the transformation. Reversing the trend of being passed, I’m now passing more riders. Not to say I’m not greeting a few. A man from Dallas on his mountain bike. “Too cheap for a road bike” he says. Riding twice as far as me today. “We don’t have open roads such as this” he explains “I’m taking advantage of it!” The couple on a Cannondale tandem. The stoker rides a lot more than his wife. The tandem allows her to keep up with him while still allowing him to push himself.

Not what skinny tires want to see

 I’m loving the open road. I keep feeling better so I keep pushing harder. This is what I’d hoped for when I agreed to come.   Cyclemeter calls out mile 30. Am I really down to 5 miles? It wasn’t that long ago I was considering scrapping the 35 mile route for the 20 mile route. Had I not missed that turn for the 20 I just might have gone that route. As it was, I was stuck with the 35. Here, 5 miles from the finish, I could have done like the man from Dallas and gone the full route. Funny, the changes the mind and body can go through on a ride.

The Paris depot watched riders come and go

 The finish itself is a bit anti climatic for a lone rider well off the back. I take the cheers I do get and head for the truck. Time to load the bike with the other three and head inside. Inside the convention center awaits air conditioning, food, and friends with stories of their own. The day had started with nerves, transitioned to nausea, before transforming into elation and satisfaction. Now, when’s the next ride?
