"I think the [Robbie from Victorious is transgender] theory is really 'funny' when you study it closely because not only do you have to believe that Robbie is transgender, but that all of his friends are bigots." How does Quinton just never miss with this stuff?

Chihiro is not female. I understand where you are coming from but he is not female. Chihiro coming out as not being female is a big reason he was killed. That was a very important part of his trial that happened.

//Just seen the Kill Count episode on Danganronpa. I really can't blame them for not wanting to address the whole Chihiro thing, because holy shit, I have seen just how hostile the arguments about this get. (On both sides, let me make that absolutely clear.)

could chihiro's alter ego ai kill macbeth? like... iirc hifumi DOES refer to the ai as a girl? idk if anyone specifically calls it a 'man'. idk i think its an interesting thing to mayhaps reaserch
Yes, Alter Ego from Danganronpa could kill Macbeth!
Tumblr media
It's creator, Chihiro Fujisaki, is stated to be male despite presenting as a girl; it's unclear whether Chihiro is meant to be a trans girl or just a boy who prefers to present more femininely. From the language used in canon, it seems to more explicitly state the latter, while the former seems closer to speculation, at least from what I could find, so until someone presents evidence that Chihiro is canonically a trans girl, we will be going off of the assumption that Chihiro identifies as male, therefore qualifying the Alter Ego for the Birth Parent Clause.
Being an artificial intelligence programmed by Chihiro, Alter Ego also obviously applies for the Unconventional Birth Clause as well.
When it comes to the Gender Clause, things get a bit iffy. Alter Ego's gender seems to be unknown, and the only time it is seen as asserting its gender is by saying it is "not female." Alter Ego is referred to in canon with he/him pronouns, though most likely due to them using he/him pronouns for Chihiro, whose face Alter Ego uses as an avatar. So, it's a bit ambiguous whether or not we could call Alter Ego a "man," and therefore the Gender Clause will be ignored, for now.
Thank you for your submission!

I’m a bit bored, so how’s about some non kink appearance headcanons
I’ll start with THH
Leon Kuwata - (He/Him bi, female pref)He’s an athlete, so I figure he’s kinda lean-muscle-ish, but with thicker thighs bc baseball players are just built different. Has smallish stretched ears (like 0g)
Sayaka Maizono - (She/Her, bi male pref) Built like a standard jpop idol, what else do you expect? She definitely puts blush and highlighter on her nose like a 2020 egirl.
Chihiro Fujisaki - (She/They, trans-femme (questioning), pan) All around petite, even their feet are tiny. Has chubby cheeks and a slight gap in her front teeth.
Mondo Oowada - (He/Him, gay) Muscular and a bit stocky, has naturally curly hair when he lets it down. Has scars on his hands from busting his knuckles. Pierced eyebrow, septum, and ears.
Kiyotaka Ishimaru - (He/Him, demisexual gay) Has a gym regimen that he sticks to religiously and is well muscled. He has fuller lips and a round face that don’t quite suit his body.
Celestia Ludenberg - (She/They, bi fem pref) She is plus sized and has an slight hourglass figure that is accentuated by her corset. Draws their eyebrows on in thin triangles and has a trad goth makeup look. Snakebites and stretched ears.
Hifumi Yamada - (He/They, aroace) We all know the man is fat, but the game really did him dirty. His body in my headcanon is evenly portioned and he has more of a hanging stomach that is tucked in his pants. Always wears comfy clothes because of sensory issues and has somewhat curly hair.
Sakura Ogami - (She/Her, pan) She’s already perfect in game. I do see her having softer facial features and thick curly hair though. She also loves to wear nude tinted lipgloss when she isn’t actively training.
Aoi Asahina - (She/Her, Lesbian) Midsized with thick thighs and muscular arms. Has a really cute button nose and a dusting of freckles. Has a small gold hoop nose ring.
Junko Enoshima - (She/Her, pan) She’s a supermodel, so yeah. She wears hair extensions, and her natural hair is pin straight. Has a small, upturned nose. (She also wears push up bras)
Mukuro Ikusaba - (She/They, Lesbian) All around muscular from combat training. Has freckles on her shoulders as well and scars on her hands/arms from knife fights.
Kyoko Kirigiri - (She/Her, bi, female pref) Slim and relatively flat chested, but doesn’t mind at all. Has very light colored eyelashes that match her hair.
Yasuhiro Hagakure - (He/Him, pan) Just kind of an average guy. He doesn’t work out or anything, so he’s a little bit soft. Scraggly facial hair. Likes to wear his locs in a ponytail with a bandanna, and he has some wood and glass beads in them. Pierced nostril and ears.
Toko Fukawa - (She/Her, Lesbian with one exception) Kind of scrawny and awkward. Hates wearing form-fitting clothes. Has knobby knees and doesn’t like wearing skirts that show them. Thick hair and eyebrows. She has freckles on her shoulders and a few other dark moles on her arms and back, like the one on her face. Is actually quite pretty, but doesn’t put any time into her appearance.
Byakuya Togami - (He/Him, Somewhere on the ace spectrum) Tall and thin, but not in an unhealthy way. Has long elegant fingers and big feet. Softer, androgynous looking facial features and double eyelashes.
Makoto Naegi - (He/Him FtM, pan) Is just kind of naturally chubby, and has a round baby face. Hasn’t had top surgery, but his body shape kind of evens him out. Thick, wavy hair. Has a gap in his front teeth and kind of a wide flat-ish nose with full lips.

even if you saw chihiro as male that would be fine? canonically they are a cis boy. like yeah i see them as a trans girl or nonbinary person usually but they are very open to interpretation vis a vis their gender bc of how clumsily the writers handled it. i definitely think blocking that person is the right choice
im not gonna get into the topic on chihiro, it's way loaded and I don't really have any leg in it considering I just don't rly think about gender too much

I think transmascs will truly have rights the day this website stops hailing Ozma as a trans woman icon and recognizes him for what he really was; a boy forced into detransitioning back into a girl because ‘it wasn’t honest for him to take the throne as a boy’ or whatever that bullshit was in the writing.

Oh, are we talking about trans headcanons??? I see someone already mentioned transfem Kazuichi, which I'm a pretty big fan of! But have you guys considered transfem Fuyuhiko? I think there's a lot of potential in that - in the fact that even in canon there's a lot of him not feeling like he really fits as the Ultimate Yakuza, and that he has to play a role to be so... I think it lends well to a transfem headcanon. Another I could see would be transfem Mondo, with how much in canon he plays up the masculinity, it could be something preformative in a transfem headcanon. I'm also a fan of transfem Kokichi & Shuichi, too - I've seen people headcanon the both of them as nonbinary, transfem, AND transmasc, and honestly? Love that for them, tbh.
I also am a big fan of transfem Makoto!!! I usually headcanon him as genderfluid, but I could also see him be a trans demigirl, tbh. I respect transmasc headcanons too even if I don't usually ascribe to them for Makoto specifically! I kind of like to think that the fact that Makoto's door gets stuck is a very funny quirk of fate in the event of him being genderfluid/nonbinary - even his door, which is supposed to be a men's one, doesn't ascribe to a binary! & Makoto using she/they/he pronouns is so real to me.
I also love to see Kiibo exploring pronouns in fics. Like, in canon they use he/him (at least in the localization) but I like to believe they experiment with different ones for a while, just to see if they like them.
I also tend to see Hajime as nonbinary, using he/they pronouns too! That's not exactly a transfem headcanon, but yeah.
I also love the idea of nonbinary kaede as well - using she/they pronouns. Maybe in the event of transfem Shuichi or Kokichi, she helps them explore their gender at first.
I could also see Tsumugi as being genderfluid or otherwise genderqueer in some way - she defaults to she/her but she doesn't mind other pronouns, and oftentimes go with he/him when complying a male character.
This one's more controversial, but I also love the idea of nonbinary Junko with possible internalized transphobia. Like, I think the fact that she keeps making alter egos that are male (Monokuma, Shirokuma, and Kurokuma) lends well to this, but I also keep going back to that line monokuma said about being neither male nor female because there's no gender in the animal kingdom. Incredibly nonbinary thing to say. Of course, I think how Junko handles being nonbinary is somewhat dependent on what you headcanon Chihiro as - but if you headcanon Chihiro as a transwoman and Junko as transphobic towards her, it could somewhat be from internalized transphobia- like, her having the idea that "if I'm fine with being a woman even though I feel like this about it, you should be fine with your assigned sex too!" Or even the idea that she cannot fathom why someone would WANT to be a woman in the first place - like, what reason would you have to subject yourself to it if not malicious ones or weakness? Since she is so disconnected or even discontent from "womanhood". If you see Chihiro as nonbinary, Junko not understanding or even being bitter that they get to reject the binary but she doesn't could also make sense, and her putting them in the "male" box would almost be from jealousy and spite. If you headcanon Chihiro as a transmale, it becomes a) somewhat hilarious that Junko, the big bad of the series, accepts their gender and b) Chihiro could be the person who teaches her about this stuff in a pre-despair setting, and maybe even make her realize she's nonbinary. I know it's.... slightly problematic to headcanon the main villain of the series who has shown she is possibly transphobic (depending on how you see Chihiro again) as trans, but I think it's... fine if you also headcanon other characters as so and not just the villains. Plus, I'm nonbinary myself, so I think it's allowed.
Those are the ones I can remember off the top of my head! I love trans headcanons <3
There's so much good stuff here!! I can't address all of it, but a couple of my favorites:
I LOOOVE transfem Mondo, it's one of my absolute favorite transfem headcanons. The way it changes that trial from "horrifying trans panic" to "the tragedy of someone with extensive internalized transphobia meeting someone who is further along on their journey and lashing out in unrealized jealousy, ultimately destroying the version of themself they wish to be"...MWAH. The type of tragedy that can only belong to someone transitioning. The consequences of self loathing, both in harming others and harming ourselves, made manifest! But with GENDER.
I'm sure this is just part of the rest of that line, but the phrase "they canonically use he/him pronouns" is so funny. Power to K1-B0 for being incomprehensible wrt gender just in general. Love that agender kid
I am actually a big fan of transmasc Junko! (And I'll use he/him for Junko real fast to emphasize this point) I think the idea of Junko as someone who experiences a huge amount of dysphoria when he's perceived as feminine, who then goes out of his way to present himself as a champion of gyaru culture and hyper-femininity, making it so that, even if he one day receives the mental health treatment he obviously needs, he will always be associated with this incredibly female-oriented culture...that's despair. That's the type of shit you do at rock bottom. I have BEEN there my man. EDIT:
Tumblr media
we are on the EXACT SAME PAGE anon 🤝
I actually did, genuinely, think Shuichi was a butch girl until I played the game, and was SO excited to finally see rep of my actual high school self. Wearing hats to cover dysphoria-inducing hairstyle? Emo makeup to escape the Social Makeup Norms? hangs out with kaede??? that's one of us right there

ohh wht are ur hcs on the tenmikoangies .. (either th pairing Itself or individuals i Do Not Mind :3)
Tenko
- she’s very very feminine and loves girly things and people forget that!!! She loves ruffles and painting her nails and doing her hair and she’s a very big feminist. Girl
- I’m a much bigger fan of the original Japanese “horrible boys” catchphrase instead of the terfy “degenerate male” we get in the translation. Speaking of which people joke about Tenko being a terf which I absolutely hate. She would not be a terf. She would welcome anyone who wanted to become a girl!!! Being a trans woman is amazing and awesome!! I think I’m a modern/hpa/nondespair au she would follow a lot of transfem creators like Dylan Mulvaney and Kim Petras, and she would LOVE chihiro. If Angie and Himiko didn’t stop her she would be out protesting for LGBT rights in front of the Japanese parliament every day.
- Although I do think she has some internal biases about transmascs because “why would you not want to be a girl and be a horrible boy?” But she’s working on it and trying to understand. She’s unlearning a lot of harmful biases her old master instilled in her- she doesn’t have a hateful bone in her body and loves her friends no matter what!
- I think she loves having long hair, but it definitely gets in the way doing martial arts, so she does a lot of elaborate and pretty braids and hairstyles with cute accessories like bandannas and scrunchies! She likes doing Himiko and Angie’s hair when she can too- she especially loves Angie’s curls.
Himiko
- Himiko loves close up magic we all know this, but I think she would also really love stuff like tarot, crystals and palm reading. She’s autistic and magic of all kinds is her special interest!
- she loves big cozy cardigans (cloaks) and fabrics with celestial patterns… I think she would be a fan of the olden town lmao
- in the nondespair au she has a black cat and a tabby cat named Midnight and Tiger
- she loves collecting shiny little trinkets, her room is cluttered but not in a messy way… it’s like howl’s bedroom
Angie
- fuck danganronpa canon I’m the boss now. Angie has curly hair I think. She’s so much more than the “crazy island girl” stereotype… augh
- she loves to go thrifting and go shopping at craft stores! You have to be careful with her because she can and will spend all of her money in one trip.
- she likes to cook! She makes traditional Polynesian food for her gfs!! Food is just another form of art after all!
- she doesn’t have a lot of issues with nudity because her culture she was raised in is just different, and while Japan has some non Eurocentric standards as well with communal bathing in hot springs and such, she can be a bit out there. Like she tends to walk around without shirts on at the house and if someone comes over she doesn’t think to cover up, she doesn’t wear bras, if she’s hot the clothes are coming off, etc. nudity isn’t sexual to her and that is okay!
- I need to do more research on different Polynesian cultures and decide which specific indigenous group she is, but I think it would be cool if she had traditional tattoos? It would mean she wouldn’t be able to use most public baths in Japan, but her culture is more important to her.

Just imagine Chihiro throwing his packer at the haters
And Mondo throwing his too
HA that's so funny
Im just really annoyed because ive been watching vods of someones danganronpa stream and i have literally never seen anyone completely fumble chapter 2 like this, like hes ACTIVELY SKIPPING OVER ALL THE BACKSTORY because its "bad writing" despite chihiro's backstory and mondo's backstory being LITERALLY SO FUCKING CRUCIAL to understand why all this happened and instead of actually seeing the message on toxic masculanity just complains about the game misgendering chihiro, WHO IS NOT ACTUALLY CANONICALLY TRANS
It was a clumsily handed message on toxic masculinity that did a lot wrong, but that doesn't make Chihiro actually trans, it makes it popular fanon and a common headcanon, but Chihiro in game is male and wanted to be seen as male, so the cast treating chihiro like a guy once they learn that IS NOT MISGENDERING???
I am so annoyed right now I hate Chihiro gender discussions honestly because no one actually engages with the text about it and if you go against FANON people call you transphobic, and its so annoying, like im literally trans, let me play in my gender sandbox in PEACE

guys i watched dead meat's danganronpa kill count and it honestly irks me that they considered chihiro a "they"
headcanons aren't canon!!!! chihiro is explicitly said to be male bc he was literally bullied into it to protect himself bc of japanese gender roles
if he was trans, he wouldn't have gone to mondo to be stronger- mondo was literally everything chihiro wanted to be from an outside perspective
and i don't think taichi would be the type to misgender his kid
canonically, chihiro is male. it's fine to have headcanons as long as it doesn't directly impede a character's story/arc. if you don't get that, you don't understand his character or story.
EDIT: (under the cut)
gender roles in japan are (or at least were) very strict. boys were supposed to be strong and chihiro was not, so he got bullied relentlessly for it. since he was seen as weak and feminine, he decided to pretend to be a girl to get the bullying to stop. and it worked. the only issue was that if he was ever found out, he’d be bullied even more for crossdressing.
chihiro never wanted to be a girl and only did it because he wanted the bullying to stop. he is quite literally uncomfortable at the others treating him as a girl.
chihiro looked up to mondo because he was a strong man and wanted to be trained by him- he even declined sakura’s offer because she was a woman.
the second motive made him motivated to share his secret- to be strong enough to let the truth out and finally be himself. a lot of his dialogue gives an insight on his insecurity of being weak and his desire to be a strong man. he wants to be a man.
if you headcanon him as trans, that is fine. that is your headcanon. my personal problem is that it feels like a lot of the takes i’ve seen undermine his story or it’s just people insisting he’s canonically trans. his character arc and over all characterization is very heavily centered around the topic of gender and gender roles/masculinity and i’m pretty sure it’s supposed to be a critique on those topics. and it’s important to keep in mind that these topics are seen differently between somewhere like the usa and japan. this game was released in 2010 and no game after has stated that chihiro identifies as anything different. alter ego- a program that chihiro created and i doubt he intended on sharing with anyone uses he/him pronouns for him. chihiro programmed something secret and gave himself he/him pronouns. the AI of chiaki that chihiro also helped create refers to chihiro as her and monomi’s father. it’s not supposed to be anything all that deep.
can his story be seen as an allegory? yes, absolutely. if you resonate with that, then that’s your comfort space. but don’t be one of those people that project onto the character.
my issue with dead meat’s kill count is that usually they follow canon and mention canon elements. to put chihiro as a “they/them” is just incorrect, no matter how much discourse it may create. this is my complaint. i know they took the safe route, but it is explicitly said that chihiro is a boy and identifies as such. i don’t remember if this was the japanese version only, but mondo refers to him using masculine pronouns and nicknames. chihiro is canonically a cisgender male and he always has been.
if you can identify with the trans take, that’s great- but please understand his character and the journey he goes through within the game. he’s not supposed to be trans representation so don’t look at it him like he is.
tl;dr - while i personally dislike the “chihiro is trans” headcanon, i don’t care if you do. my issue is that if you’re going to cover the game’s story and it’s characters, it needs to go off of canonical elements. acknowledging outside debates is fine, but don’t let headcanons bleed into your actual coverage.

And to think that Chihiro was the most controversial character. Then again that character probably still is because at the very least the Hiyoko drama is limited to one person. Chihiro involves multiple people.
//Someone came to me about this a while back, about how their friend hated Mondo for what happened in Chapter 2, and I feel bad I never responded to them. I'll do my best to try and explain it here, since we're on the subject:
//Much of the controversy with Chihiro really comes from a misunderstanding about his personal identity, which I don't blame Western audiences for not getting, since it's a Japanese thing.
//Yes, how it's presented does come off as uncomfortably transphobic, especially now in 2024. However, nothing in the narrative ever suggests that Chihiro is trans. I have gone through DR1 several times, and I can tell you that everything points to Chihiro himself identifying as male.
//While it would be easy to dismiss that as poor handling of a serious topic, the fact that DR never even references Chihiro's gender outside of judgements about him not being tough and manly, and explaining to Makoto at the end of Salmon Mode that he's actually a boy, all lend credence to the idea. He never says he wants to be a girl, never uses different pronouns, and distances himself from other girls while they're trapped, such as turning down Sakura's offer to have them workout together.
//It's also important to keep in mind that the DR1 cast are all based on different Japanese subcultures- Junko's a Gyaru, Mondo's a Bōsōzoku, Sayaka's an idol, Hifumi's an Otaku, etc.- and Chihiro is no different. He's a reference to Otokonoko, a male who engages in crossdressing and presenting as female.
//This actually has a long history in Japan, even as far back as onnagata, where male actors would portray female characters in kabuki theater. Crossdressing is not seen as culturally strange in Japan, hence why it's also very common in manga and anime.
//Furthermore, Japanese has more of a loose relationship with gendered words than English does, and there's always going to be translation gaffs when something is localized and given a more literal meaning. That's why a lot of games from Japan can have such awkward line delivery when removed from their cultural context.
//And most importantly, Chihiro's story isn't about transphobia, it's about unreasonable expectations about him being a man. He was bullied because he was very weak growing up, told that's not what a boy is supposed to be like, and so to escape that, he started crossdressing. It's a bit out there, but DR is no stranger to ridiculous plot points and this is at least a more grounded one.
//Meanwhile, Mondo was subject to the same but from the other end. He internalized the idea that a man has to be strong, which means burying all his feelings of sadness and guilt over his brother's death, which only festered over the years and probably fed into his rage issues.
//Mondo doesn't kill Chihiro for being a boy who dresses like a girl, but because Chihiro being willing to confront his own perceived weakness with the desire to change made him feel weak by comparison. That set off a moment of blind fury and, without even intending to, he killed Chihiro. Both of them were victims of toxic masculinity, which was and still is a pressing issue in Japan and the West as a whole.
//I'm not saying it was presented perfectly, but in that cultural context, it explains that a western localization doesn't properly convey and has thus given people the wrong impression.
//I can understand anyone who still wants to assign Chihiro a status as LGBTQ as part of their headcanons, and that's totally fine. I personally like shipping him with characters like Makoto and Kazuichi.
//The problem is, when we don't examine the cultural context that characters like this emerge from, it can give us the wrong impressions. Impressions that have lead many to read Mondo's actions and Spike Chunsoft's writing in this Chapter in bad faith, which does far more harm than good when dissecting its flaws.
//I hope this at least manages to clear some things up.

I deeply and sincerely apologize for dropping a rant like this in your inbox, but let's be clear: as per Danganronpa canon, Chihiro Fujisaki is a cisgender male who crossdressed solely to escape extreme bullying, and who - by his own admission - desperately wanted to gain enough strength to reclaim his masculine identity. (The biggest reason he confided this fact to Mondo in the first place is because Chihiro saw him as an example of the "strong man" that he aspired to become.) In his conversations with Makoto, he even alludes to wanting to come out to everyone as a boy as soon as he's comfortable enough to do so.
Now, if people think that's a shit character conflict, that Chihiro was fucked over by the narrative, and that his storyline is insensitive to real-life trans people, then okay, sure, those are all valid opinions. But quite frankly, "being treated as a male after death" is the only morally correct way to treat Chihiro because in life, that's how he identified all along (even if it was in secret).
The fact that he was a closeted cis person instead of a closeted trans person doesn't change the fact that aggressively misgendering him the way that some of the submitters did is equivalent to deadnaming him. It's siding with the bullies who insisted he was "too weak" to be a boy. It's a disgusting thing to do that flies in the face of the freedom to determine one's own gender. Taken to the logical conclusion, it validates the opinion that a gender assigned by outside forces hostile to you are more valid than your own self-identification - that you can change someone's "true" gender by bullying them hard enough - which I hope we can all agree is a disastrous position to take, given how the there are plenty of people out there in the real world will take the flimsiest excuse to harass and suppress trans people. Let's not validate their opinions, even by accident.
In short, if people think that Chihiro should have been designed and written as an actual transgendered character, then that's one thing. I have no beef with that position. But treating him as if he's not actually a boy after all, in direct contradiction of his own self-determined gender, is the rankest hypocrisy.
.
