I’m supposed to be working on a grant all day today but I’ll procrastinate for 10 minutes posting these nature journaling pages of these cool pit vipers I got to nature journal. I used some references from the reptiles of Ecuador book project by @tropicalherping and the detailed illustration was done during a science illustration workshop with @picturatusconservacion and @gracecarolina.ec at the amazing field station of @sumakkawsayinsitu where these two #bothrocophias species overlap and potentially hybridize. #naturejournaling #sketchbook #pitvipers #snakes #reptilesofecuador #sciencesketch #biodiversty #bothrocophiasmicrophthalmus #bothrocophiashyoprora (at Ecuador) https://www.instagram.com/p/CjA9DinuAzU/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Sibon nebulatus by MUCHMORE DESIGN LLC. Via Flickr: I've run into this species a couple of times on the western side of the Andes. It is definitely one of the more beautiful snail-eaters I've encountered. #savethechoco MUCHMOREDESIGN.COM copyright James H. Muchmore Jr.

It's a photo this time! 😃 I took this picture on Santiago, on the Galapagos islands last year. I believe it's a “Santiago Racer“ - it was so so beautiful and not scared at all (oh how I love Galapagos wildlife 😍) It's been over a year now since I spent my 10 week internship on the islands. Time goes by soo fast! And who would have guessed we'd be in quarantine one year later? Surely people would have acted faster if they had seen this coming. But, as a German saying goes “Afterwards you're always smarter“ 😷 Hope you're staying positive and have a good place and great company to stay with 🌸🌳🐕🐈🌻 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . #galapagosracer #galapagossnake #snakesofinstagram #racersnake #snakephotography #herping #herper #tropicalherping #galapagos #santiago #galapagosislands (hier: Vienna, Austria) https://www.instagram.com/p/B_QaVq8Fc8l/?igshid=ljgvlxeaflcg

Atelopus spurelli.

“Photo by Trevor Frost @tbfrost | A juvenile Amazon tree boa rests in the hands of Lucas Bustamante, an Ecuadorian scientist and photographer who helps run the nonprofit @tropicalherping. Tropical Herping conducts scientific surveys of unexplored areas and also works to protect the Ecuadorian Choco region, a little known and highly imperiled swath of tropical forest that runs along the Pacific coast of South America, from Ecuador to Panama. This boa is sometimes referred to as the Halloween boa because of its orange and black coloring.”

Ringing in the new year with @save_the_choco . An organization building awareness and collaborating with local and global organizations to help protect vital areas and species throughout the Chocó region. . Horned Marsupial-Frog (Gastrotheca cornuta) . This Endangered and mysterious frog was documented for the first time in Ecuador in over a decade. The @tropicalherping team discovered it on an expedition to a remote pristine part of the Chocó just outside of the Cotacachi-Cayapas Ecological Reserve with @fundacionjocotoco. . Outside of the reserve the frog is in danger of becoming extinct, as the area where it lives (the Ecuadorian Chocó) has lost nearly 98% of its original vegetation cover and is facing the highest rate of deforestation in the country. . The good news is that it was found on a plot that is for sale. @fundacionjocotoco is currently trying to purchase this plot. With your help you can help protect this species and many more. If interested in making a donation please click the link in the bio or visit www.savethechoco.com. . #Repost @paulnicklen @download.ins --- Today, we celebrate another major milestone in the Eastern Tropical Pacific as Ecuador makes a historic move, further expanding and strengthening protections for the incredibly biodiverse waters surrounding the Galápagos Islands. Please read more about this victory below and visit the link in my bio for ways you can help us take the next step. This victory belongs to all of us – thank you for all the passion and support that helped make it happen. 🙏💙 * * * Ecuadorian President Guillermo Lasso Signed a new marine reserve into law, officially designating an additional 60,000 square kilometers to the existing marine protected area (MPA) surrounding the "Enchanted Islands." This new reserve expands the existing Galápagos Marine Reserve from 138,000 km² to 198,000 km². It is a move that offers increased protection to marine life along part of the Cocos-Galápagos swimway – a crucial migration route for pelagic species such as whale sharks, hammerheads, and leatherback sea turtles. The new reserve includes a 30,000 km² no-take zone, which prohibits all extractive activities, and another 30,000 km², where longline fishing will not be permitted. Ecuador joins Costa Rica and Panama as countries that have expanded MPA coverage in the ETP within the last twelve months. This follows commitments made by Ecuador, Costa Rica, Panama, and Colombia during last year's UN COP26 climate conference – each nation had announced its pledge to work together and create the world's largest multinational network of marine protected areas. This is a huge step towards protecting the region's critically endangered species and safeguarding important marine resources that support the livelihoods of thousands of people, but there is still much more we must do. Our team will continue bringing you stories from these extraordinary but vulnerable locations as we work to fully protect the marine life that plays a vital role in the overall health of the ocean and planet. Via @SeaLegacy. With @Mas_Galapagos2020, @MigraMarNet, @Mission_Blue, @SavingOceans, @PewEnvironment, @BertarelliFoundation, @TropicalHerping, and @SoAlliance. #MPA (at Ecuador) https://www.instagram.com/jim_abernethy/p/CYvCObVJjh4/?utm_medium=tumblr

A remarkable closeup of an unusual hummingbird; the White-Tipped Sicklebill. Read all about it following the credit. • • • This is a #Repost from @sebastiandido ・・・ During a night hike down the streams of the Sumaco National Park I found many sleeping hummingbirds close to the waterfalls. One of those species really got my attention due to its bizarre looks! It turns out it was a White-Tipped Sicklebill (Eutoxeres aquila aquila). After a couple of shots it woke up and allowed me to take this picture which I found really interesting at first but... then I realized that another great photographer @scott.trageser.photo took an almost exact picture just a week earlier!
