Our Magical WHITE Christmas atmosphere in our lovely home in Havana! Finally after 3 weeks we were able to buy a WHITE paint on a BLACK market (hard thing to get here), so we can paint the room that we planned to do for weeks now. Do you think Teresa @thaira.music can finish this room and decorate it by tomorrow??? Let’s see if the Christmas magic will happen! All this hardship of getting the most basic things in Cuba that are in the most countries just one trip to “Home Depot” away is keeping me pretty tense these last weeks. As I lost it completely yesterday night, Teresa gave me a magic pill called Clordiazepoxido and I went from crying to burst out laughing within half an hour. Worst case scenario, they will be my Christmas dinner... Does anyone else feel so much holiday pressure now?? I’m sure I’m not alone. Seems like workers in the newly opened grocery stores that are popping up around Havana recently are Xmas ready! I am amused watching their Xmas tree🌲head pieces as it’s the only thing that is reminding me that Xmas is coming also to this tropical island 🏝. As I enter the store,I am stopped by the security person and my bag is heat sealed in a plastic-to prevent me from stealing :) The store carries mostly items from the EU food brand SPAR,what is a huge improvement from the nonexistent selection in the stores before,but still,there is a huge room for improvement as many basic items are still missing. At this point,the only item I am READY TO STEAL are EGGS. I haven’t seen them on the shelves for a free sale since the hurricane Irma passed, and it’s been almost 3 months ago! Please don’t tell me that chicken 🐔 are still stressed. We are all stressed and still have to wake up in the morning and “deliver” whatever we are supposed to deliver. So you understand, there are 3 different markets in Cuba. First, there are subsidized stores called Bodegas.Every registered Cuban receives a coupon book (or 1 book per household) and has a right to buy limited amount of basic foods (rice, beans, oil, some meat) for a very low price. Sounds great, but this system covers only 1/3 to 1/2 of family needs,so the rest they have to buy at a regular price (about 20 times higher) at free market, in supermarkets or on the black market. “Regular" prices are the same or higher than in the stores in Europe, or USA while the average monthly salary is $20-30. So do the math. Every time I see a person carrying eggs,I run to them with hope they say that they got them on the “free sale”, but they always tell me, that it’s “por libreta”, a coupon book that is only for Cubans.They used to get 12 eggs monthly,but now in chicken post trauma era, they are down to 5, and I’m down to 0.
