Lonnie, who all his life with his sons, constantly told Will, “don’t cry,” and Will always obeyed and sucked it up like a “man.”
Mike, who all their young lives together, who knew Will like no other, would only say, “don’t cry” in front of the bullies, all while shielding Will and promising “I’ll take you somewhere safe to cry, okay?” because Mike never truly stifled him from his emotions and let Will know that he could be both vulnerable and protected.

On the ST fandom making up "angsty" headcanons for characters like Steve and Eddie:
Steve's parents being abusive is a headcanon. It does not exist in canon, so therefore it is not canon.
There are other angsty headcanons you can create for Steve that are backed by canon, like for example: nightmares about the creatures he's fought. Why not explore him always grabbing the object closest to him and wielding it as a weapon when it's dark and he hears a bump in the night or something. You could say that he can't sleep at night so he falls asleep during class. But no, y'all chose to give him abusive parents.
You've done that to Eddie, too. There are abusive parents in the show like Lonnie Byers and Neil Hargrove. You just don't want to acknowledge Neil because you don't want to acknowledge that Billy is an abuse* victim. Wayne Munson is not an abuser. You've made a privileged white boy and a dude who lives in a trailer park into abuse victims but they are not. That is a headcanon.
Eddie watched two people die horrific deaths in front of him. He has guilt about running away. That is canon. But y'all have to give him Billy's trauma. It's really weird that you hate Billy so much but your version of Eddie is morphing into Billy Hargrove. So which one is it? You want the ✨️aesthetic✨️ of trauma for your "favorites". The Duffers have a fandom that fits their victim blaming ideology like a glove. You want to play Build a Victim rather than accepting a canon victim, which is extremely fucked up.

I thought about an AU where Lonnie got custody of Jonathan and Joyce got Will (she still fights constantly to have Jonathan but Lonnie is pulling strings inside the court to keep Jonathan with him even if he’s pissed he lost Will and Joyce, he likes hanging it over Joyce that she can’t see her son for more than ten minutes outside his school unless she begs him for weeks).
Jonathan already had volatile tendencies when hestill had Joyce to look after him, the anger he bottles, the one that grew beneath his fathers constant berating and negligence and the beatings when he was drunk.
He didn’t pick fights, but anyone who picked one with him got to find out just what his father taught him. What the fist of a man felt like against their face even if his eyes are wet and burning as he straddles some high school bully as a freshman and smashes his face in until he’s dragged off thrashing by teachers.
His dad comes in and just shoves his head with two fingers, Jonathan already refusing to look at him, lip split and glaring at nothing.
“Your principal called me all the way down here to pick you up, you better tell me you won, Jonny.”
Jonathan doesn’t answer. Lonnie just scoffs and rolls his eyes, grabbing him by the scruff of his neck like a kitten and dragging him outta the school, Jonathan’s feet stumbling every few steps.
“Kids wouldn’t pick on you if you didn’t have that fuckin’ creepy face, kid. Try to smile every now and then, eh?” Lonnie slaps his neck a few times, hard enough to make Jonathan almost cough from choking on his own spit. He still says nothing.
“You gonna ignore me, huh? God, you’re just like your fuckin’ mother. Quit clamming up and speak up like a fuckin’ man, you pu—“ His grip tightens on his nape as they stop by his car in the parking lot and Jonathan finally looks at him.
There’s nothing in those dark eyes until something seems to spark, that spark igniting into a flame that lit up those near-black eyes.
Jonathan spits. Right in his face. Blood and saliva and it occurs to Lonnie when he wipes it from his face slowly, rage coiling in his gut, that Jonathan was waiting. Saving that for him. That the thick pink strand sticking to his chin, that the blood on Lonnie’s face, was stored and grew within his mouth that entire walk out of the school. That Jonathan was shutting up for a reason.
He’s fucking grinning too, teeth stained with blood and lips shiny with the saturated spit.
“…Is this funny to you, kid?” Lonnie grabbed his jaw and tugged him downwards, quick and sharp to make it hurt like whiplash. To rid Jonathan of the closing height gap between them, the one that grew smaller and smaller as the weeks passed.
Jonathan laughs, an almost maniac glee in his eyes as he dribbles blood down into his palm. Lonnie wrinkled his nose and wiped it away on his jeans, disgusted. Jonathan continued to giggle, and that only made Lonnie angrier.
“What are you, a fuckin’ girl? Quit giggling.”
Jonathan’s grin closes, a broad smile instead that reopens his split lip with barely a wince.
“I could beat you.” He says it like it’s fact. Like he knows he could. Like that fight had solidified that for him.
“You really gonna fight your old man?” Lonnie chuckled, shaking his head at the gall of the kid. “I’d like to see you try. We both know you’re a wimp when it comes to a real fight, you’re all soft like your mother. A little fag like your soft little brother.”
For a moment, they’re standing in a moment of time, the late fall winds caressing their clothes; his wife beater and baggy jeans, Jonathan’s patchy coat and plain green shirt two sizes too big.
The next, Jonathan’s fist cracks against his face and Lonnie makes a grab for him that’s vicious in a way only a predator can be. Grabs his hair, his shoulder, throws him to the ground hard. Let’s him scramble back up and aim again, Joyce’s fiery eyes glaring up at him like it did every time he saw her, always so full of anger even as he begs to see her boy. Her son.
Jonathan is his as much as he is hers, and Lonnie loves reminding them all of it. Loves seeing Joyce’s fire in Jonathan’s eyes, loves seeing the mean twist in his lip that is entirely Lonnie.
Jonathan was the embodiment of their rage, their fights, their flaws, and Will had always been the embodiment of their softness, their youth, their love. Lonnie loathed Will for being the thing they no longer were. Joyce and Lonnie left their soft, youthful love behind shortly after marrying, and he resented her for it. He was sure she resented him for it too.
He still has their rage; their fire. Jonathan hits him, and it packs heat, leaves his jaw achy and hot as he grabs his collar and throws him against the car, pinning him there. He doesn’t have to hit Jonathan to win this fight. He’ll hit him when he heals, when his adrenaline fades and he stops wanting to fight. He wants that fire to die and to reignite him like a match. He wants his fingers to get burnt by the time the stick turns entirely black, wants Jonathan to keep fighting.
He can fight everyone. He can prove he’s anything but soft like his mother and brother. He can prove he’s a Byers, tough and independent. He can prove he’s a man.
Jonathan breathes heavily as Lonnie presses his forearm against his throat, lips pursed tight and eyes full of distain.
Lonnie holds his gaze, and there’s a sense of pride when Jonathan doesn’t look away. It’s a first. He’s holding his gaze, not hiding a hint of his anger. He’s steel.
Lonnie eases off him slow, smoothing his hands down his sons shoulders and Jonathan is still breathing hard, not from exertion but the burn deep in his gut that fills his lungs with inky smoke. He’s huffing the air from them like a dragon about to open their mouth.
Lonnie smirks and it worms it’s way into a grin that is laced with a rare expression of pride. Of approval.
He claps Jonathan’s shoulders and the boy doesn’t flinch. Just glares at him like he could incinerate him with his mind.
“You know…” Lonnie chuckles. “I think you should visit your mother sometime. How’s Saturday sound?” He lets his son go, watching the anger turn into confusion, the steel melting into a rippling lake. Lonnie took his keys out and spun them as he walked around the car, a self satisfied smirk on his face.
He should show Joyce his hard work. Let her see the callouses he’s finally putting into their sons interior.
At least their son would survive this world; if Will was found in the bottom of the lake before he finished high school, Lonnie wouldn’t be surprised.
He wasn’t gonna let Jonathan, their son, be some wimpy fag. Joyce could keep her son. Lonnie didn’t want him.

Thinking about that fine line Jonathan walks re: Lonnie's impact on Will. Wanting to insulate Will from Lonnie's rejection and soften that blow as much as he's able, but not wanting to give him false hope and feed a dangerous fantasy where Lonnie has a place in his life.
Because who wants to look into those big, sad eyes and tell their little brother that Dad doesn't love him? That he will never care, and that Will is nothing to him. But he also wants Will to be prepared, and he doesn't want to lie to him. He respects this kid and he wants to impress that upon him--the world may not, but Jonathan will always respect his intelligence and ability to think for himself, and he will nurture that, would never hamper it even supposedly for Will's own good.
So he makes it about conformity. There's a life lesson in that. It's not just that Dad doesn't give a shit--it's that Will should be true to himself because fuck everyone who doesn't see it that way.

s1 rewatch
recently rewatched s2-s4 for spooky month and now for halloween i'm looping back to the very beginning! excited for barb to slay the five seconds of screentime she has, to see the lil baby kids, the focus on the party mike lucas dustin (and will), baby mike being obsessed with findiing will (my byler heart), the lab!, the byers family, the focus on joyceeee. like s1 was the start and had so much potential, shame a lot of those threads were dropped by the duffers. like lonnie!!! i hate him so much but he was so interesting and his impact on the byers family of joyce, jonathan and will was so intriguing! like the fact jonathan checked lonnie's boot bc he thought will might be there!!!!1!!!!
very unexcited for the love triangle. like the team jonathan vs team steve of it all - like shut up im team nancy, they both did her dirty in s1 smh. the lack of max and robin and erica will be sad. but other then that, i can't remember anything else off the top of my head. i think s1 was overall pretty good and had very few faults.

TW for child abuse
Been thinking about this moment lately where Lonnie is hammering over the hole in the wall that Joyce axed to try to get to Will—
Tumblr media
He’s literally trying to rebuild his home by shutting Will out.
If you pay attention to Lonnie’s dialogue, you’ll notice that he actually does want his family back. Now I’m not trying to give him any credit, this isn’t come from a genuine place of love.
Lonnie tells Jonathan that he wants to see him more. Again, not coming from a genuine place, as Jonathan points out, but I also don’t think he’s lieing.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
When Lonnie comes back to the Byers’ residence at the end of ep 4, he immediately starts calling Joyce babe. And to be honest, if Joyce hadn’t kicked him out in ep 5, he probably would have tried to stay.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But if Lonnie does miss his family so much, why leave them? And if so, why not stay in town? Why move out to Indianapolis?
It’s pretty clear that Lonnie hated Will. When Joyce get’s mad at Lonnie in the flashback for not showing up, it was specifically about not bringing Will to the baseball game, not about visiting Jonathan or Joyce.
Now, from a base level, it looks like Lonnie was just them in order to get money out of Will’s death. If they were filing a lawsuit, using the broken family angle to get more sympathy in court, and making sure that he’s included in the payout.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And maybe that’s the only angle. But if you wanna get conspiratorial (like me) then there may be more behind Lonnie’s action then we are being shown.
If Lonnie was just in it for the money, why did he say that he wanted to see Jonathan before he knew that Will was “dead?”
I made a post awhile ago that pointed out some of Lonnie’s fishiness, indicating that he may possibly been working with the lab during his dissapearance.
Think about it, if Lonnie was working with the lab to cover up Will’s dissapearance, then doing a payout through a fake lawsuit would be the perfect cover. If Will died and Lonnie suddenly came into a lot of money, that would look fishy to people. But if Will died, and Lonnie sued the quarry and got settlement money, people wouldn’t bat an eye. If we already know that the body is fake and that the guy who found his body was instructed by the lab, then it wouldn’t be too hard to believe that they could be behind the settlement as well.
When Joyce finds about Lonnie’s plan to sue, we get this shot of Lonnie in the shower—
Tumblr media
Now, narratively he had to be out of the room so that Joyce could go through his stuff, but figuratively, he is rinsing himself clean of his crimes. Will is “dead” now, he’s in the ground, and he has the perfect cover. He was can wash his hands of what he’s done.
Let’s take a step further and consider Lonnie’s past abuse of Will. If Lonnie was abusing Will when he was younger, and was nervous about Will remembering and telling, then it would make sense for him to skip town and stop visiting Will. And if Lonnie wanted to get his family back, he would have to get rid of the problem, which to him is Will.
Now, obviously Will is the victim here and not to blame, I’m just speaking from Lonnie’s messed up point of view. Lonnie is the one fault here, not Will, but to Lonnie, Will is the one who in the way of his perfect family.
So now the perfect opportunity arises for Lonnie to not only get his family back, but he gets a big payout whatever terrible thing he did to Will dies with him. It’s perfect.

i was doing my regular rewatch the other day and tbh... lonnie and will's relationship is so unsettling. lonnie literally did not give a single goddamn fuck that his own twelve year old son was missing and later "dead". he just... did not fucking care! at all. couldn't even pretend to. jonathan comes to tell him what happened and we see that...
lonnie got joyce's call and still didn't care to reach out,
when jonathan tells him this is serious and real, he mocks will by saying "he was never very good at taking care of himself" (which is already disturbing considering this is his son he's talking about, but especially so when you remember that lonnie abused will for being gay and tried to get him to like "masculine" things),
he's already talking to jonathan about seeing him more and reconnecting, like will isn't fucking missing, like he's already fucking dead and he's moved on, as if will is some stranger or worse someone that never existed at all,
instead of feeling any kind of shame about jonathan not believing him when he says will isn't there and him looking in the actual fucking trunk of his car, he just makes a joke out of it asking if jonathan's gonna check up his ass too,
his neglect is brought up again when jonathan slams one of the posters to his chest and tells him "in case you forgot what he looks like",
and that's not even touching on the fact that the very first thing we see lonnie do when jonathan enters the house is fucking shove and pin him to the wall, telling him "you got stronger".
like, he is not a good man in the slightest—the complete antithesis of the byers we know.
and then afterward... lonnie finally decides to come back. he's being nice to joyce and pretending like he's the man of the house again. like he's finally come home to fix and save his family.
he goes to will's funeral and treats it like a schmoozing event, like that isn't his youngest son being buried right in front of him, showing less emotion than one of will's classmates that hasn't ever even talked to him.
but... he's not there because he's had a sudden change of heart.
no, he's there because he has something to gain out of this unimaginable tragedy. his own youngest son is dead and he comes back home to collect a fucking check for it. because he's never cared about will, hasn't ever even seen him as a human being, he just... sees his death as something he can benefit from.
it's just so fucked up and so sinister. lonnie isn't a man riddled with vices, beholden to some disease which makes him act in ways most unbecoming. no, he's... just a man. a small, manipulative, and cruel leech of a man that just doesn't fucking care and is in it only for himself.
it's just... it's really tragic to think that will really was dealing with monsters way before that first demogorgon ever came through the gate.
and even then... that demogorgon was an animal acting as animals do / possessed by vecna and you can't really blame it for that. but what's lonnie's excuse, huh?
#like. hashtag felt lmao#a lot of ppl write lonnie as an alcoholic and i feel like ... lonnie just being a bad person because he Is a bad person without the help of#any vices is just... so much more terrifying and painful.#because then it's just lonnie. just a man who doesn't care about his son. a man who views his baby boy as less than a bug. a man who#doesn't care or hold any affection in his heart because he just simply does not fucking want to or care to. he doesn't care if will is in#danger. he doesn't care if will is dead at the bottom of the quarry. he doesn't care not because he's drunk or high but just.. because.#he couldn't turn will into what he thinks is a proper man so in his mind he's thinking well.. if i can't get anything out of him like that#then i'm at least gonna get my money's worth with this wrongful death case.#a man making the choice to be evil. to inflict pain purposely. for no gain whatso-fucking-ever.#bc at least vecna does it to gain more power to achieve world domination. but lonnie is just a piece of shit that abuses kids.#water is wet lmao but... i feel like stranger things manages to be so fucking dark sometimes and yet it just... it's treated so normally#that you almost don't even notice it. bc ur just viewing this story from the perspective of a character and for them it IS normal#i just. yeah. idk. Thinking Thotz Over Here#it's so fucked up when u stop to think abt it lmao like. if will doesn't get his happy ending bro.......#abuse tw#byers#lonnie#mine

tw: talking about lonnie abusing jonathan and joyce.
i wonder what jonathan went through being raised by lonnie.
he had his childhood living with lonnie. he has more memories, more experiences, and was older all when lonnie was an asshole.
he also had to make sure he could protect will from lonnie.
like they all have so much trauma from the upside down obviously but i sometimes wonder what fighting back against lonnie to protect will did to him.
i wonder how he protected himself. how he made himself appear the way lonnie wanted him to look so he could be safe for the day.
i wonder what joyce went through marrying lonnie.
i think about how horrible he definitely treated her. how she probably had to be a good wife who's complicit to him. how he probably never comforted her when she was sad and just branded her as the 'crazy lady'.
i wonder how much she put herself in harms way to protect her sons as much as she could. i wonder how much she suffered for a divorce, but she did it because she knew her kids can't live with him.
i wonder how she felt losing bob, knowing that this was the second time she failed. i wonder how will felt after losing the only actually good father figure in his life.
i think about after joyce and hopper can finally be a couple, how he helps her through the new relationship after losing two. how would jonathan and will deal with joyce and hopper getting married? how would they react, even if they do logically know hopper would never do to joyce what lonnie did.
there's so much trauma in the byers family even in a world without the upside down.

These scenes go one by one.
Now, the walls. Drawings/posters in El's room and Mike's basement. Light bulb. Ginger cat/lion/tiger. Flowers (not only the real ones but also the weird flowers in Mike's basement and the dinosaur). Papa = father = pastor/priest/preacher (@aemiron-main I can't stop thinking about your theory about Brenner coming to Creels as a pastor).

Billy Hargrove is not cleary a “shitty” character to everyone and people who think he’s not should not have to be made silent for your comfort because expressing like for a fictional character is not harmful behavior 😘
putting this in certain tags for a certain audience because it’s related to a certain post comparing the Hargrove-mayfield situation depicted in the show to the Byers-hopper situation in the show that personally rubbed me the wrong way.
