MERMAY: Twisted Wonderland Marine Biologist!AU Skit

In honor of Mermay, I’m posting a skit from two new Twisted Wonderland AUs I’ve started working on (and I likely will find more ideas to create more AUs over time), and I’m so happy to share some of the stuff I’ve got with you all~ UvU As you can see by the title, the version today is the Marine Biologist!AU~!

So here in this scene, Yuu has started figuring out their new role as caretaker for a motley group of mermaids that arrived at the facility after their avian guardian (aka Rook) arrived to keep them all together and safe from humans trying to hurt them. Let’s see how their first official week goes~ >v>

Oh, and I forgot to mention this in the poll, but in both AU’s, the mermaids cannot speak human languages and speak in clicks, chirps, trills, and whistles (or squawks in Rook’s case). Each character’s form is based on their nickname given to them by Floyd in game just for clarification! (Crowley in these AU is a manta ray because it has wings, and because we don’t know what Floyd would call him, so I want him to be a manta ray!).

A week had passed since the new feeding routine started, the seagull-like harpy they’d started calling “Roo” taking each bucket and passing them to each enclosure while Yuu stood near the cart. While somewhat boring with nothing to do but watch, Yuu reminded themselves that this was the closest anyone had been able to get since the mermaid’s avian guardian appeared. It was also fascinating to watch how, for the most part, he seemed to have a good rapport with the majority of the tanks. They couldn’t help but notice how annoyed Leo seemed whenever Roo got near him though—even when the harpy seemed undeterred and still smiled so cheerfully.

What sort of relationship did those two have in the first place?

‘So many questions…I wish we could communicate with one another,’ Yuu thought, moving to put another bucket on the red ‘x’ when they saw him taking off towards them again. This was the last one and they would be done for the morning feeding.

When Roo landed and swapped the empty bucket with the full one, he stopped to look at the cart with the other upturned buckets. For just the briefest moment, Roo looked…disheartened? Before they could figure out what it could mean, he had already taken flight towards the final tank: the Pom Tank.

‘Wait…are they…getting enough to eat?’ Yuu wondered.

As he landed, they paid close attention as Roo began sorting through the fish, gently passing them to Violet and Guppy when they appeared at the surface. Eventually he took at least three fish for himself before returning the bucket, a calm yet still somewhat weary smile on his human-like face. If he was only taking so little while giving everyone else the rest…

“Pardon?”

“Sir, I really think we should add at least seven more buckets of fish,” Yuu told Mr. Tanner. “I don’t think any of them are getting enough food, and the whole time I was watching them, Roo only took three fish for himself. He looked…disappointed when he was looking at the empty buckets.”

“Wait, who’s Roo?”

“The harpy creature. It…got a little awkward trying to communicate with him or calling him ‘harpy-man’, and he seemed to respond to the name Roo, so…I’ve started calling him Roo...for lack of a better name, anyway.”

“Oh…I see.” The director hummed as he mulled over Yuu’s words. What he was thinking they couldn’t say for sure, and for a moment they worried he might turn down the suggestion…until he nodded. “Okay. I’ll make arrangements with the supply team and have them prepare another cart of fish for tonight’s feeding. You are to report what you observe, and if it seems like they may still need more, we will add more until we find what amount works.”

“T-thank you, sir!”

“No, thank you.” Mr. Tanner’s expression was soft as he smiled at them, reminding Yuu of a grandfather as he said, “We honestly cannot afford to lose these creatures due to our own negligence. No one should ever have to go hungry, whether they’re human, animal, mermaid…or a giant screeching harpy man!”

At that Yuu couldn’t help but laugh, Mr. Tanner’s jovial chuckle joining in. Hopefully their idea will work, and this will put them in good standing with Roo…

“Roo! Feeding time!”

Yuu’s voice echoed in the mostly silent warehouse, mixing with the low thrum of the filters keeping the waters clean and oxygen rich. A flurry of feathers announced Roo’s descent before he landed, talons clicking against the metal floor as he approached the offered bucket as usual. One by one they continued the same routine, Yuu waiting impatiently for him to finish so they could bring out the nest cart.

When he brought back the last bucket—once more carrying three fish and disappointed look in his eyes—he was about to take off before Yuu called out his name. “Wait,” Yuu said, holding their hands up and making a motion they’d used once before. Pointing to where he was standing, they said, “Stay, Roo. Wait.”

Roo’s head tilted as he watched them, yet he stayed put with an expectant stare. Yuu put the last bucket on the cart and wheeled it away, glancing over their shoulder to make sure he stayed there. Their heart hammered in anxious excitement as they reached around the entrance to where the second cart was waiting, seeing Roo tense as they once more repeated the request…before pulling the load around the corner.

The moment he saw the fresh buckets full of fish, Roo’s emerald eyes grew so wide in clear shock and disbelief. It wasn’t until they approached with one in hand that he began crooning and squawking, nearly losing his grip on the three fish he’d had in his arms before dumping them into the fresh bucket. “There you go, Roo,” Yuu said, unable to hold back the biggest smile at the joy he was showing. “I’m sorry we haven’t been feeding you and your friends enough. We didn’t know you needed more than we were giving you. If it’s still not enough, I can talk to the director and get some more buckets…okay?”

The joyful harpy soon calmed down, though his smile never went away as he tilted his head, regarding them with a thoughtful expression. Then, he picked up the bucket—

And promptly deposited it in Yuu’s arms.

“Wha-?!” they uttered, barely managing to get a proper hold on the bucket in question. “Wait, what-?”

Before they could voice any protest, Rook had already picked up another bucket and was holding it in one hand. With his free arm, he gestured towards the tanks and gave Yuu a calm, expectant look.

“…are you…allowing me to help?” Yuu asked, pointing at themselves. To their shock, he nodded, one of his wings reaching out to nudge them forward as he guided them towards the Hearts Tank. It wasn’t until they’d started climbing up the stairs that he took off, fluttering over to one of the other tanks and landing on the platform. To their shock and amazement, several of the mermaids had approached the surface, watching them carefully as they set the bucket down and began tossing some fish into the water.

It wasn’t until Roo called out to them that they slowly began to eat the offered food, giving Yuu a good look at them. The crab-like mermaid had a heart-shaped mark on one eye, while the blue mackerel one had a spade over the opposite eye. The orange mermaid had a diamond on one cheek, and when the golden-eyed turtle appeared they saw a clover marking on the opposite cheek. Card deck markings…? That wasn’t something that the other researchers had been able to note before.

Finally, the red, black, and white mermaid appeared, slate gray eyes observing them with such an intensity that they felt…intimidated. Like they were staring in the face of royalty. Not a king per say, but…a queen maybe?

“Wow…you’re all so…gorgeous,” Yuu couldn’t help but utter in amazement, elated at the fact that they were able to even get this close to them now. Then—realizing that they would have to report this event—they hummed in thought. They were going to have to figure out names for these five just like they had for Roo. So maybe…

“I think I’ll call you…Red Queen,” Yuu finally said, pointing at the red one. “And you are…Diamond. Clover…” A moment later they smiled, adding, “If I call you Turtle Clover, I can nickname you TC! And…you two are going to be…Spade and Ace—like the Ace of Hearts!”

While the others seemed indifferent or confused by this, the moment they mentioned ‘Ace’ they noticed how the crab mermaid seemed to perk up in surprise. Did he somehow recognize the word?

Curious, they called out, “Ace?” To their surprise, he squeaked and chittered up at them, moving closer with a ‘Yeah? What do you want?’ look on his face. “Does…Ace mean something to you?”

He chirped at them in response, looking annoyed as he crossed his arms over his chest in what was yet another very human-like action.

Just how much actually separated the mermaids from ordinary humans…?

Twisted Wonderland Marine Biologist!AU Snippet: Mini!Yuu meets a Mermaid

Ugh, I've been so busy with real life stuff lately, but to show you guys that I am reading everything that's being sent in, here's a snippet of a fic response to an ask! The person asked about the mermaid!AU/Marine Biologist AU and wondered: would the boys be more comfortable/curious interacting with mini!Yuu versus older Yuu?

Some notes as a reminder: the boys in the Marine Biologist AU don't speak human languages, but they can understand words based on context and observation. Aside from the Octotrio, everyone is a mermaid/harpy based off of the animal nicknames that Floyd gives them in game!

Also to note (and I will be working on designs once I sit down long enough to do so), the boys will have a less human look to them yet will retain enough details for us to recognize who they are supposed to be.

----------------Begin Snippet----------------

When Yuu woke up, they found themselves alone in the room. Rubbing their tired eyes, they looked around in confusion before they called out, “Mama? Mama!” They waited to see if she would appear, only to be met with silence. This wasn’t the first time they’d woken up in one of the rooms at their mom’s job, and it wasn’t unusual for the adults to be busy with their work.

It also wasn’t the first time they’d snuck out to see the animals.

Excited at the thought of seeing the pretty fish and cute animals again, Yuu climbed out of the cot and pulled their otter plushie Felix with them before toddling out of the room. The hallway was empty, the ceiling towering over them as their footsteps were muffled by the fish tanks and computers. Creeping quietly past the rooms where they could hear adults talking, they couldn’t help but catch a few mumbled words. “-maid…otter……turtle…”

Of all the words, however, the one that caught their attention was ‘otter’, a happy grin crossing their face as they hugged Felix close. They had otters again! Maybe they could play with them and give them shiny new rocks to play with and feel better? The thought was enough to make them hurry over to one of the largest rooms nearby.

Yuu stopped and gasped in awe, staring up at the vast size of the room and the seven large tanks willed with different colors and decorations. Some were more sparkly than others, while some had a more rough and mysterious look to them. Giggling, Yuu toddled over to the closest tank and peered inside. “Oooo,” they cooed, watching as some of the glowing fish flickered in and out of the dark tinted glass. Even the jellyfish looked so gorgeous, mesmerizing the tiny toddler. Seeing a tiny fish flickering close to them, they giggled and waved Felix around to make him dance as they sang, “Just keep swimming, just keep swimming, swimming~!”

The fish seemed to follow along with the dancing otter toy for a moment before it suddenly bolted away, Yuu giving a disappointed pout…until something caught their eye. It was big…bigger than anything they’d seen in the tanks before. For a moment Yuu thought that it might’ve been an adult swimming with the animals again, but the shape looked…wrong.

Closer and closer the dark form got, flickers of pink, green, and blue lights running along its body before it emerged into the bright fluorescent lights. Pink and black mottled skin flashed with colorful lights, bright red eyes that seemed to glow staring down at Yuu as they gazed up at it. Short octopus tentacles shifted and settled on the sand as the creature leaned in to get a closer look. The face looked human-ish, but the vampire fangs in its mouth and the flared hair on its head gave them the impression of being a vampire octopus. The sight of this creature with large arms and an eerie look would have unnerved anyone. Yuu, however…

“Wow,” they uttered, eyes shining bright with awe as they reached out to touch the glass with a free hand. “Are you…a mermaid??”

A warm smile crossed the octopus mermaid’s face as it—he, they decided—reached down and placed his own hand where their own was, Yuu marveling over the sheer size of it. A soft, low warble echoed in the water, somehow managing to be loud enough to be heard over the tank motors yet soft enough to be soothing to the ears. He blew out a few bubbles, waving a finger from his free hand around them…and creating shapes in a shower of sparkles!

Gasping, Yuu happily stamped their feet in pure joy as the bubbles—guided by the mermaid’s finger—began to move like the animals he created from them. Dolphins spinning and twirling around, jellyfish gracefully drifting along, eels and octopus floating and swimming along…it was so magical that Yuu didn’t even notice the large form that had quietly landed nearby and was stalking up to them with bright green eyes.

Twisted Wonderland Marine Biologist AU Snippet

Hey everyone! I'm still okay, just been dealing with real life stuff and discovered I may have accidentally put myself through a burnout even when I was trying to avoid it. =w=

I've been working through it by focusing on more personal projects and other fandoms, and I've also been focusing more on my physical and mental health lately. I'm getting better every day though, and I'm feeling good about stuff!

Anyway, I know I haven't posted anything in a while since my last update, so I wanted to tide everyone over with a snippet I had written back in May for the Marine Biologist AU. I was saving this for when I finally reached that part of the story and got it off the ground, buuuuut...honestly, it's too adorable for me NOT to share!!!

Reminder that in this and the mermaid AU, there is a communication barrier where humans and mermaids cannot speak the same language. In the Marine Biologist AU though, the boys can understand some if not most words, so they have nothing but time to try and listen to the researchers talk and learn how to speak the language.

So...what happens when our little researcher Yuu just so happens to drop an apple in the tank holding a certain Guppy and gorgeous Betta Fish?

"Whoa, geez!” Yuu squawked, their hand just barely touching the apple as it bounced off the grating before falling into the water with a ‘plop’. Sighing, Yuu said, “Well, there goes part of my lunch.”

One moment the apple was bobbing along in the waves, the next…a hand reached out and grabbed it, a familiar adorable face emerging from the water to examine his catch. “Oh, hi, Guppy!” Yuu called out, happy to see the smaller mermaid. Violet floated nearby, though it was clear that he was watching them both with that intense gaze of his. “Sorry, that’s not a fish. It’s an apple.”

At that he perked up so fast that Yuu almost thought he’d gotten whiplash, adorable doe eyes looking shocked and amazed as he squeaked at them.

“D…do you know what an apple is?” Yuu asked, earning another insistent chirp from him before they pointed at the fruit clutched in his hands. “Apple. Ahp…pull…”

He looked between them and the fruit, looking so confused for a moment. Then, he held it out and—pointing at it and himself—he spoke and said, “Ahp…ull…Eah…pul…Eahpul!”

Yuu was floored as they stared, not sure if they’re feeling amazement or pure disbelief or both as Guppy continued his game of charades. It was as if he was trying to tell them…

“Is…Ehpul…Eh…pel…Epel…your name?” Yuu asked.

“Yeeee!” ‘Epel’ squealed, practically squirming in place and looking absolutely elated as he nodded enthusiastically. “Epel! Epel!”

Even as he continued chattering in the strange language while still repeating his new ‘name’, Yuu found themselves hardly able to move as they tried to process this new development. Had…they been able to understand Yuu this whole time and just…didn’t know how to communicate back? Or is this a new development brought on by their continuous interactions with the mermaids?

Once he had calmed down, Epel had turned his attention back to the apple and curiously sniffed it. Then—before they could think to try and get it back—he had taken a bite out of it and chewed. A moment later his eyes grew wide, the ear fins wiggling as a wide (chubby cheeked) smile bloomed on his face and he let out a high-pitched warble.

“Huh…? Do…you guys actually eat fruit?” Yuu uttered in amazement as Epel chomped away at the fruit faster than they could blink, practically swallowing the core whole before licking the juice off his fingers. A moment later he lunged up onto the deck, peeking over the edge as he sniffed around like a cat on the hunt. “Whoa! Slow down there! I don’t have any more apples if that’s what you’re looking for.”

Once he seemed to realize this, he looked up at Yuu and-

'Oh no...those are the cutest puppy eyes I've ever seen!!' Yuu thought. 'How does a mermaid know how to do the puppy eyes?!'

"Ahpul...app...le," Epel chirped. "Apple..? Apple!"

"O-okay, okay! I'll go and get more apples for you!"

It's so adorable!!! I love how Lilia was all like 'is anyone gonna make the baby human smile' and didn't wait for an answer(⁠♡⁠ω⁠♡⁠ ⁠)⁠ ⁠~⁠♪. I'm wondering what Rook's up to though - is he gonna startle the little one? He do be sneaky (⁠￣⁠ヘ⁠￣⁠;⁠)

Your writing always gives me a HUGE serotonin boost lol - what're you working on at the moment (if you're cool with me asking (⁠;⁠ŏ⁠﹏⁠ŏ⁠))

Pfft!! Tumblr is weird when it comes to notifications, and lately, I've been seeing some content creators mention that tags and responses in their posts aren't showing up in their notifications unless they go in and look at the specific posts and see them. :V

Anyway, yesssssss, I had so much fun writing that part and I'm excited to finish it up! I did add a bit more to that part than what's been posted, but you'll see it once I post the finished product~ >vÓ

Rook is always a sneaky one, but while he is curious, he means no harm! In fact, he becomes more like mini!Yuu's land (aerial?) big brother. UvU

I'm so happy knowing that people enjoy my writing so much ;;v;; As for what I'm working on, I'm still chipping away at the pregnant fem!Yuu as well as the mermaid ask and figuring out how to tackle the next installment of the Kaiju!AU, though I'm working on trying not to overwhelm myself and take breaks so I can properly write. I have too many ideas sometimes and can overwhelm myself with trying to go too big with it 🙃 But I'm learning that it's okay for me to write as much or as little as I feel suits the idea(s) I'm given, so thank you all for bearing with me on that!

Hello everybody~!

So, since this month is Mermay, I wanted to do a little something for it. I've been a little burnt out on asks lately, but I've taken a break for a few days to focus on some personal projects/stories and recharge myself. I'm getting back on track to answering things again, though, while working on the fics from the last poll, so look forward to that! UvU

Now, what I've got are two options for this Mermaid!AU (where Yuu is a human in both version and the characters are mermaids based off of Floyd's nicknames for them), and one of them is going to wind up being the main one I will focus on once I finish the prologue for it. However, I do have bits from random points in both stories that I've already written and wanted to share!

For the Marine Biologist!AU, Yuu/reader/MC is a marine biologist intern who is assigned to a facility that recently came across seven groups of mermaids from an island that appears only once a year out of nowhere. Yuu winds up being one of the only ones able to get anywhere near them to feed and monitor them--which is a huge responsibility! Can these two worlds come together? Will Yuu help find a way to get them back home?

As for the normal Mermaid!AU, Yuu/reader/MC winds up shipwrecked after a scuba diving trip goes wrong, lost on an island filled with mermaids and strange bird-like humanoids who seem closely intertwined with the nature of the island and its ecosystem. Can Yuu find a way to get past the island's guardian to get home, or will they be trapped on the island forever? Will they discover the secrets of the island and the connection humans once shared with these primal forces of nature?

Like I said, I do wanna do both of these stories, I'm just gonna focus on one specific one 😅 In the meantime though, since it's Mermay, I wanted to spoil you guys with some stuff I'd written down! >v< Keep in mind that since they're random skits, there are things that will change as ideas come to me on how to approach this, and I get a set timeline set up.

Poll will be open for a day versus a week because I'm impatient and curious 😂 I may even answer some questions about the AU as well, though we'll see~

MERMAY: Twisted Wonderland Mermaid!AU Skit

Okay, here’s the other skit for my other version of the Mermaid!AU~!

Compared to the Marine Biologist!AU, this version has Yuu getting stranded on an island while on a scuba diving trip, and their goal is not only to find a way to get home, but also to discover the secrets of the island and uncover the history behind what caused the mermaids and the avians (aka like Rook since he’s a seagull) to be separated and turned into mere mythology.

What you’re about to read was more or less a writing exercise I wrote and edited for a possible part when Yuu first wakes up. I don't think I'm going to use this as part of the prologue, but it’s still a possibility if anyone else wanted to imagine this situation once I get it started!

Reminder: there is a language barrier between the humans and mermaids/avians, meaning that things we know the names of would be things they don’t know. Just like in the Little Mermaid! 0v0

Drip…drip…drip……

A quiet groan escaped as Yuu slowly opened their eyes, grunting and gasping as they slowly picked themselves up. Their body was battered and sore, their lungs burning as cold, damp air chilled their skin. Struggling to gather their thoughts, slowly but surely the memories of what happened came flooding back. What the hell was that…that…thing they saw?! What could possibly exist in the world that could destroy an entire ship in one swipe?! How—

How…did they survive?

“Where…am I?” Yuu uttered, looking at their surroundings. It became clear that they were inside a cave, a large pool of water nearby illuminated with a bright blue-green light that made ripples across the ceiling. The stone walls were also covered with glowing blue lights, slowly fading in and out like glittering stars. Were these glow worms? Wait…no, those hung from the ceiling. Some type of crystal?

On trying to stand to get a closer look at the wall, however, they collapsed the moment they tried to put any weight on their leg. In the dim lighting, they could see that their leg was wrapped tightly in seaweed. Peeling it away, they discovered a strange paste covering a large gash in the wet suit’s leg and an injury that looked mostly healed. Where had it come from? Who wrapped their leg up in seaweed and tended to their injuries?

“What’s…going on?” they uttered, noticing the array of random junk and items nearby. It looked like random stuff that had come from ships, some old, broken, and tattered while others were sealed in water-tight containers. Digging around one of the containers, Yuu found several survival kits inside and a survival guidebook in a waterproof bag and immediately pulled out the thermal blanket to wrap around their cold body. Sighing as their body began to warm up, they looked around once again and wondered, “How did I even get here?”

Bloop!

Yuu’s eyes landed on the pool of water nearby, staring at the rippling surface.

Bloop!

Their heart skipped a beat as they scuttled away from the edge, clutching the blanket around them tightly as they stared. Even from this angle they spotted two shadowy shapes appearing, both slowly growing larger and larger. ‘What is that?!’ they thought, heart hammering in their chest. Then—right before their eyes—a head emerged from the water.

A humanoid head with fins on its head.

Bright green eyes stared at them, the creature’s skin a mix of soft and dark blue with a black spade mark on its face partly hidden by the dark blue hair on its head. Its jaw dropped open as the fish it had been carrying fell, floating in the water. Seconds later, a second head emerged from the water with a head of bright red hair and a red heart-shaped mark on the opposite side of its face. This one looked annoyed as it chittered and squeaked something at its friend…before it too stopped and stared at Yuu.

“……I…I’m dreaming,” Yuu whispered. “I’m delirious and imagining fish-people in the water. There’s no way this is real…”

Then—in what looked like whispering—the creatures began quietly clicking and chittering at one another.

“…dude…it’s awake…”

“I know…”

“Why is it awake?!”

“I thought it was going to still be unconscious by the time we left the fish for it!”

“Dude, I told you to leave that thing alone! What if it’s dangerous?!”

“If it were dangerous, it would have already attacked us, Ace!”

The cavern echoed their words back at them, both of them glancing back and forth between each other and the strange two-legged creature.

“This is not good,” Ace uttered, gripping his head nervously. “Seriously, what are we going to do? How are we going to explain this to the others?! What even is it in the first place??”

“I don’t know!” Deuce snapped. “Maybe…they’re a deformed seal? Or an avian who lost their wings?”

“Then how do you explain the flippers on its legs instead of talons?” Ace pointed out. He did a double-take and asked, “And did it just grow a new set of silver scales? That’s so weird!”

“Weird or not, it still needed our help, Ace!” Deuce said with a frown. “They only appeared right after the Island Guardian reacted to that small metal whale, right? So maybe…it’s a new species that came from another island seeking help?”

Ace groaned as he shook his head. “We’re going to be in so much trouble once Riddle finds out about this…”

“You’re the one who said you wanted to go out beyond the void after getting him angry in the first place.”

“Oh, shut up.”

“Eem treemin,” the creature mumbled, shaking their head before smacking their palms against the sides of their head. “Eem treemin, eem treemin…!”

“Is…is it okay?” Deuce asked, cautiously swimming forward to try and check on them.

Spotting movement nearby, Ace noticed a brightly colored form slithering across the cavern floor as it crawled across the silver skin around the creature’s body. It seemed to notice its new visitor too and—with wide eyes—it jumped up with a shriek.

“AAAAA!!”

“AAAAA!!!”

“AAAAAAA!!!”

So...

Do you guys know that thing about creative writers with ideas (plot bunnies) and how they always seem to multiply one after the other? That's me with Twisted Wonderland AUs. I can't help it! The series just reminds me of all the stories I loved as a kid, with characters that had depth and / or developed or we got to learn more about--even if it was stupid little things they do in their everyday life! I've grown to appreciate it in ways I never imagined I could any form of media. ;;v;;

To be honest...this game has given me the creativity to consistently create and build upon ideas, and the support you all have given me has meant so much. I can't thank you all enough for sticking with me for so long, and for sending me all the ideas or scenarios you all have been daydreaming of. ;;v;;

So I wanted to give a bit of an update on a few things I'm going to do with the blog:

1) Create a rules page. I've gone far too long without updating my original set, and I feel it's long overdue 😂 Plus, it'll help me keep track of certain things!

2) Go back through and update the links on the Masterlists with posts I may have missed. I didn't realize that some things I was referencing in some of my latest posts (aka the grape incident in the monster!AU) were missing, so I'm gonna comb through my posts and make sure I label and organize them easier for you guys to find (and for me to refresh myself on what I write)!

3) Answering asks (of course). Things are a little slow going and my muse has been getting finicky with me, but I will make sure I get to everyone's asks! Some I may answer because they're quick and easy, others...I may end up getting an idea for something more expansive, so that'll take a bit longer. 😅

And finally, 4) Introducing a(nother) AU:

Twisted Wonderland!Mermaid AU!!!

Honestly, this started because I got inspired by the artwork by this artist here where they drew the characters based on Floyd's nicknames for them, and it started as a Marine Biologist AU where Yuu is a marine biologist and taking care of the mermaid bois (all 22 boys + one fire-breathing cat) buuuuuut...at the moment, Yuu getting shipwrecked and living on the island with the mermaid boys wouldn't leave me alone. 😂

As well as an idea where Yuu is a full-blooded Kaiju/born a Kaiju and has Land Before Time like adventures because I got emotional at baby Littlefoot hatching, but who's counting the ideas? Certainly not me!

Anyway, I wanted to share a snippet of the prologue I have written that's currently under construction, so the final product may differ. I'm honestly really excited about this AU too, and I hope you all enjoy it as much as I do~ ;;v;;

If anyone were to ask Yuu what they were going to be doing over the summer, they likely would have told them: catch up on their reading, or playing video games, or any number of different things they had planned. Even just relaxing at home or on the beach would have been an enticing offer.

A scuba diving trip was not something they expected to get dragged into.

“First time diving?”

“Was it that obvious?” Yuu asked, one hand gripping the bar on the seat next to them until their knuckles were white while the other kept hold of the oxygen tank sitting in front of their flippered feet.

“Yeah…kinda obvious for a first timer,” the instructor said with a chuckle, the man giving them a reassuring pat. “It can be a bit nerve-wracking for new divers, but you’ll be fine. You’re one of the contest winners, right?”

“I put my name in as a joke, I didn’t think I’d actually win!” Peering over the edge of the railings, Yuu couldn’t make out anything in the dark water. “I…thought we were going to dive near the shallows closer to land. What are we doing so far out?” they asked, swearing they saw a big shadow pass by…only to realize it was the ship’s frame reflecting on the water.

“I know we’re a lot further out than we normally would for first time divers, but we had problems with our normal ship and the only one that was available was this ship a couple of marine biologists were using.”

“…why didn’t you just cancel and set it for another day?”

“Try telling that to my bosses,” the man muttered under his breath before the smile was back on his face. “Anyway, I think this will be a fun change to the program! These biologists are actually working to explore the reactions of marine life to musical instruments, and we’ll get to see it firsthand ourselves!”

Before Yuu could respond, the ship came to a stop and the driver said, “We’re here! You folks ready to go diving while we get set up? There’s a coral reef not far below us, so you’ll have plenty of time to sightsee.”

“Yup! Okay, so let’s go over the basics again, and I’ll make sure your gear is on properly.”

Yuu listened nervously as the instructor walked through each procedure and rule of diving, the wetsuit sticking tightly to their body as the tank weighed heavily on their back. This was not how they imagined their first time scuba diving would be—they could barely even make out the shore from a wave in the distance. Finally—with mask secured and breathing apparatus in—the instructor gave them a reassuring nod…before falling backwards into the water with a ‘sploosh!’. For a brief moment they froze, but the motion of the ship and the weight on their back knocked them off balance and forced them backwards.

Fwoosh!!
