[Image ID: The front and back of an aged-looking book cover. The front features two dragons, one white and one black, forming a vertical infinity symbol and the title "Tales from Aurea". The back has the following summary: "It's the end of an era and the land of Calthia is descending into ruin... Amidst a backdrop of crumbling empires and dwindling magic, four unlikely companions come together with a shared goal: helping a mysterious young girl named Kaja stay hidden and find her way home. But when it comes to light that Kaja's elusive people are the only ones with the power to destroy the demonic forces dragging Calthia into darkness, suddenly all eyes-friend and foe-are turned their way." /.End ID]
We're back!!
After a long hiatus, I'm coming back with a new and improved draft of Tales from Aurea that you'll be able to read for free. Come join the Pathfinder party 🥳
Genres: Action, Adventure, Fantasy, Supernatural
Themes: Coming of age; justice and revenge; duality and balance; facing fears; free will versus determinism; dealing with trauma, loss, and grief
Sources of inspiration: Slavic mythology, Pathfinder/DnD, The Elder Scrolls, the Zelda series
Features: Largely LGBTQ+ cast, focus on platonic relationships, found family, a fantasy setting based on ancient Rome and surrounding kingdoms
Content warnings: violence and blood (no gore), character death, discussion of topics including imperialism, genocide, and slavery
Where can I read?
Chapters will be serialized on Royal Road (link), with an excerpt and announcement shared here on tumblr! Haven't worked out what kind of schedule yet but you can follow on Royal Road and/or request to be on the tumblr tag list to keep up with news 😊
Where can I learn more about the characters, story, etc?
I think this "what to expect" tag provides a good overview. You can also check out my "pathfinder talk" tag here for everything I've posted including drawings, excerpts, and general rambles.
I read the last draft, should I read this from the beginning?
Yes! As well as writing improvements, this draft contains more character development and new details. I'm also planning on carrying this into future arcs that were never posted to tumblr before.
Ask to be added to the tag list and thank you for reading!

I didn't even know elves had heraldry, how is Finrod's sigil different than others?
They do! Tolkien himself came up with some designs, look how pretty!
Tumblr media
The above aren't all elven. For instance, the one at the center, with the red hand, is Beren's, and the tree with three circles represents the Silmarils. But I wanted this picture because I love that Tolkien did this, it's all very pretty.
Anyway, initially, Finrod seems to have used his father's device, probably because he's the leader of the House of Finarfin in Beleriand. It looks like this
Tumblr media
This is very typical of elves. Personal devices for male elves are always lozenges (with circles for women and squares for countries or families.) They're also typically symmetrical on both horizontal and vertical axes.
You can see that eight rays touch the rims of the lozenge - that signifies rank. The more rays, the more important the person, roughly speaking. Finwe has sixteen, and all his sons have eight.
Finwe's sons also borrow Finwe's colors, which are these (note also how similar the design is):
Tumblr media
And then Finrod goes ahead and changes his device to look like this:
Tumblr media
What is this, Finrod? What are you doing. Great job on keeping the lozenge but uh. What the fuck is going on here? Where are the colors of your house? Where are the rays of your rank? Where's the symmetry of your species?
I mean, from the forest green and the blazing torch, and especially the harp, everything represents his meeting with the people of Beor. It's clear what he wants his device to say, but god! Is this really the best way to say it??
This design is so bizarre that the very authoritative book JRR Tolkien: Artist and Illustrator speculates that maybe the Edain made this device for Finrod, and they weren't clear on or just didn't care about eleven heraldic traditions. Except, this is Beor's device:
Tumblr media
It's literally more elvish than Finrod's by a large margin!! If Beor or his people are making a device for Finrod, then either Finrod made one for them, or they deliberately swapped styles for some other reason.
Now, it could also be that this is a posthumous thing, but I think the same problems still apply? It's just. It's an odd device, okay?
Sure, it can just be a random inconsistency, but it's so much fun to imagine Finrod being Weird. "Hey I found this new species! On a related note, let's take down my father's heraldry, I'm about to invent Modern Art™️ 🥰"
Alternatively: "Hi! My gender is male. My lineage, rank and race are ✨Friend of Men✨ No further notes."

“We’ve each of us our Neldoreth,” Finrod murmured, answering the question in the other’s gaze rather than his words. A distant smile tugged at his lips and his eyes were warm, unguarded. “Though to speak truly, mine was upon other foothills, amid the pines and not alder trees. But here was it spoken.”
And then, as though a haze had lifted, Beren saw the king’s arm caught in the sunlight against the rock and the pigment etched above his wrist. A vertical stroke, crossed at its midpoint, a dot on each side of the intersecting line. Emeldir and Barahir had each born a similar mark, as had his mother’s father, his aunt. By what illusion had he not seen it till now? His breath drew in with sharp surprise—the king was wed, and to one of Beren’s own people. His thoughts spun as the realization settled upon him. “Who?” he blurted out, attempting too late to restrain the stunned query and felt the color leap across his features. “Forgive me, lord, that was a presumption.”
“Nay, thou hast more right than any to ask—dear son of dear sons, as I’ve named thee before. Dear son of his sons.” Finrod’s voice caught and for a moment his knuckles whitened against the stone. Then a laugh slipped from his lips and he looked back at Beren with a wry grin. “‘Know the path your forefathers set,’ was that not the phrase? Ever keen, thy mother’s words.”
The knowledge shifted together like a mirage once neared. The king before him in the frayed and faded shirt, the patterns of the long wandering marked about its hems. Each pointed insinuation that had lurked beneath his cousins’ accusations. A shrine of items upon the stone shelves, each piece a herald of that first generation. The cracked harp and the spare clothes. Nóm’s voice greeting him with the language of his own people, naming him son as he clasped him within his arms. And throughout all, a faded scrawl in Emeldir’s book of lore, Whom among us can resist the draw of Light? Forgive me, Bel, I heeded not the cry of the raven. Yet neither can I find it in me to regret.
“Bëor,” he heard himself say, then flinched at the incredulity in his tone.
“Balan.” The king’s smile was weary now and his thumb turned the iron ring round and about his finger. “Brief it was and foolish, and bitter in the ending—as all such barters must be. But of all my years, his shall ever be the center.”

The Advisors Alliance Translation Post 2: “Husband, don’t cross the river. Husband, nonetheless, crossed the river.”
The Advisors Alliance 大军师司马懿之军师联盟 is a 2017 two-part Chinese TV series depicting the life of Sima Yi, a government official and military strategist who lived during the late Eastern Han Dynasty 东汉 (25 CE - 220 CE) and the Three Kingdoms Period 三国時代 (220 CE - 280 CE). [Wikipedia of the show’s first season]
The second part is titled Growling Tiger Hidden Dragon 虎啸龙吟 and keeps following Sima Yi’s life as he matures and becomes wiser [Link to the show’s second season’s MyDramaList page].
The Weibo account [Link] of the show made a series of posts in the style of small encyclopedias explaining different historical and cultural facts that where included in the series. The user @moononmyfloor compiled the 50 posts and asked me to translate them. This will be an ongoing series where I will do just that.
The posts are not in order of the episodes but I will provide the episode and season number to avoid confusion. If there are any mistakes in translation, do let me know in the comments or privately message me and I will do my best to fix them. Although I tried to stay as close as possible to the original text, I had to take some liberties in some posts to get the meaning across better. On the side, I have included extra information from personal research that explains certain things better.
If it is difficult to read the letters, tap or click on the image to expand it. Without more preamble, here you go.

Extra information:
Yuefu (乐府), literally Music Bureau, are a genre of ancient Chinese folk songs that, either imitate the style of, or are from the Imperial Music Bureau. The latter was an institution in charge of collecting and writing lyrics to folk songs. Yuefu are known for having strict syllabic rules that change from dynasty to dynasty.
《公无渡河》 is also known as Kong Hou Yin (箜篌引). Konghou is an ancient Chinese stringed instrument similar to a harp. A Yin (引), in this context, is another type of ancient music poetry that has a freer syllabic structure and is characterized by long syllables that go well with the melody of the konghou. Below is a picture of the instrument:

Allow me to clarify something. The folk song 《公无渡河》 was recorded by Cui Bao in "Notes on Ancient and Modern Times" to be of Gojoseon origin. As such, Koreans consider it to be their oldest surviving folk song.
The Chinese consider it a Chinese Han Dynasty song on account of the tale being set and song created in the Lelang Commandery [108 B.C.E. - 313 C.E.] which is one of the four regions Gojoseon was split into while under Han rule. Koreans consider the residents of Lelang, and the other commandaries, to be Gojosen Koreans who retained a separate culture to the Han Chinese. If you wish to conduct further research into the song, don’t get surprised if you read different names for the characters that appear in the story.
Koreans call the song "Gongmudohaga (공무도하가)” and the ferryman Gwaklijago (곽리자고). The Korean folk tale differs from the Chinese retelling in that the Korean name of Gwaklijago wife, who is credited with creating the actual song, according to certain Chinese and Korean retellings, is Yeo-ok (여옥) rather than Li Yu (丽玉). In Cao Yong and Cui Bao’s retellings, the wife of the drowned drunk man created the song while, in the Korean version, it was the wife of the ferryman who, upon learning about what had transpired from her husband once he came home, created the song on her harp, called in Korean gonghu (공후).
Many Chinese poets have retold the story in their own ways and added, omitted, or reinterpreted content. Some of said poets are Li Bai and Chen Shou of Shu Han. On top is Li Bai's version which lacks strict syllabic structure, a signature of his style and, on the bottom, Chen Shou's more structured one:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This expression 《公无渡河, 公竟渡河》 is often used as an allegory to satirize someone who is heading into clear danger but is too stubborn or obsessed to listen. If this person doesn't listen, then they are sure to run into trouble.

There are mainly three types of Thai classical music: Khrueang Sai, Piphat, and Mahori Ensemble, each with its own sub-genre.
Tradition
It is a tradition that players must respect the instrument. Before and after playing, the player usually raise their hands to wai the instruments because Thai instruments are considered to have "Khru," which means that the instruments that we use and knowledge of Thai music is something we can only have because those before us have invented and passed it on, so we must respect them.
Wai Khru and Khrop Khru ceremony
a very important ceremony for people who study traditional Thai arts, whether they are music, dance, Khon or artisan.
Wai Khru is to perform a ceremony to pay respects to the teacher.
There are many other different types of Wai Kru, such as Wai Kru in school, which is a ritual on Teacher's Day. Wai Kru Muay, which is a Wai Kru in the style of Thai boxing, as well as Krabi Krabong, Wai Kru before performing musical arts such as shadow puppets and Wai Kru in poetry, called "Asiravat," ect. The purpose is to commemorate the merit of Kru and ask for auspiciousness. Traditionally, a Wai Kru ceremony is held on Thursdays.
Khrop Khru is to get approval to start studying at that stage.
There are different ways to do the Khrop Khru ceremony depending on what kind of Thai art it is for. As for music, it considers learning Piphat to be the most important, so the Khrop Khru ceremony for learning Piphat has more steps than for learning Khrueang Sai or singing.
The Khon head used in the ceremony consists of
Shiva's Khon The symbol of Lord Shiva, who is considered one of the great gods and is the god of destruction, When we set the mask or head, we must set it higher than the other masks.
Phra Narai's Khon symbol of Lord Narayana, which is considered a god who manages and heals the world. When we set the mask or head, it must be lower than Shiva.
Brahma Khon is a symbol of Lord Brahma, who is considered the god who created the world. When we set the mask or head, it must be lower than Shiva but always with Vishnu.
Indra Khon symbol of Indra, which is considered a god who will help the good people, the cause of the rain, to give succulence to the crops of the earth. When we set the mask or head, we must set it lower than Shiva, Vishnu, and Brahma.
Ganesha Khon The symbol of Lord Ganesha, who is considered the god of knowledge, wisdom, and liberal arts, is supreme above all obstacles. He is a deity who is beyond the writings of books. When we set the mask, we must set it to be lower than other gods, but can be around the same level as Indra.
Vishnu Khon The Symbol of Vishnu, which is considered the god of construction workers and related to the Chatree drama, there is believed that his highness will come down to the pillar in the middle of the Chatree stage to protect against all dangers. When we set the mask, it must be lowered by Shiva, Narai, Brahma, Indra, and Ganesha.
Narada Muni Khon is the symbol of the Narada Muni, which is considered a Piphat teacher and the inventor of thai harp. He is the author of the Scriptures of Law, known as "Naratiya Thammasat". The head will be set up on the right side of the stage with the heads of various hermit monks.
Panchasikorn hermit's khon is the symbol representing Phra Panchasikorn, which is considered to be a teacher of harp and singing. When we set the mask or head, it will be located on the right side of the stage with the heads of various hermits.
Khon Phra Phirap, symbol of the Phra Phirap, is considered a powerful demon teacher, to whom the Khon-drama and Thai music artists pay their respects as teachers of music and dance. He is the god of death and calamity. At the same time, he is the god of luck, who can eliminate various diseases. We will place the mask or head on the left side of the stage, lower than Shiva but higher than other giant masks, and separate it from the gods or humans.
Kolaikodi hermit, Pharot hermit, Bull's Eye Hermit, Fire Eye Hermit Khon heads represent each of them, which are considered human teachers who take note of Shiva's dance moves and posture and convey them to us. Artists studying Thai traditional art must respect all of them, but the most frequently mentioned and worshiped is the Pharot hermit (Old Father), who is considered the direct teacher. When we set the mask or head, we will set them on the right side of the stage, separated from the gods or demons.

The different Khrop Khru ceremonies for each type of music are as follows:
By cymbals
The cymbal is used in ceremonies for everything that is inconvenient to holding hands or any learners who do not learn what is classified as a Naphat song, such as those who play Khrueang Sai or sing. The teacher, who is the one to give approval for them to learn, will use cymbals in the ceremony.
By holding hands (for people who studying Piphat)
The details are as follows:
First time
Students prepare flowers, incense, candles, and money to give to the teacher as a token of respect. Then the teacher holds the student's hand and guides them to play khong wong yai. Play Sathukan's (สาธุการ) song three times, and it's done. That student is considered ready to start studying Piphat. They will start by learning the Sathukarn song from any teacher until they can play it from start to finish, and then learn all the songs in the homrong evening set (Song Naphat, primary stage), with the exception of the Tra homrong song, which one will need to receive the second Khrop Khru ceremonies before learning. * homrong (โหมโรง) = The first song played before a performance to signal that the event has begun.
2nd time
When the student completes all the songs in the homrong evening set, and ready to learn the Tra homrong song, The teacher will do the ceremonies for them by holding their hands and guiding them to play khong wong yai, Tra homrong song, three times.
3rd time
Time for the homrong midday. The teacher will hold the student’s hand and guide them to play khong wong yai, trabong kan song, three times.
4th time
Started to learn high-level Naphat music. The teacher will hold the student’s hand and guide them to play khong wong yai, batsakuni song, three times.
5th time
In this step, the student will get to learn Song Phra Phirap, which is the song that is at the highest level.
The qualifications of the recipients at this stage are as follows:
That person has to go through the 4 stages of initial Khrop Khru ceremonies already. This means that the attendees must learn all the Naphat songs that are required in each Khrop Khru ceremony already.
must be at least 30 years of age, or have been ordained as a monk, or otherwise have to receive royal permission from His Majesty the King.
If it is considered that the learner has enough qualifications, then they will be allowed to learn the song Phra Phirap with the following steps.
Light incense, candles, and flowers to worship Phra Phirap before the beginning of the song.
The teacher who performed the ceremony held the students' hands and guided them to play khong wong yai to the melody at the beginning of the song 3 times.
They should study all the remaining parts of the song or review it on Thursday.
For the prosperity of both those who perform the ceremony and the participants in the ceremony, they must follow the steps and must remember the sanctity of ceremonies strictly.

Types of String Musical Instruments
String instruments have knitted their musical magic throughout human history. It travels from cultures and generations. From the ancient lyres of Mesopotamia to the sophisticated violins of the Baroque era, these instruments have been integral to the evolution of music.
This blog will take you through the rich canvas of string. It will also remind you about how crucial it is to buy a dedicated string instrument insurance plan to protect your gear, irrespective of its type or family. Let's read on!
Meet the Members of the String Family
Plucked String Instruments: As the name suggests, the plucked string instruments make a sound when you pluck or strum their strings. Some of the best examples include the guitar, banjo, harp, and sitar.
Guitar: It is a versatile instrument that has a long neck and comes with typically six strings, although variations do exist. It is central to diverse musical genres, including rock, jazz, blues, and classical.
Banjo: With its roots of origin in Africa and adopted in the Americas, the banjo features a circular body and four to six strings. It is a prominent part of folk, bluegrass, and country music.
Harp: Characterized by its vertical frame and strings, it is one of the oldest string instruments. You would hear it in classical, folk, and Celtic music traditions.
Sitar: It is a plucked string instrument from India. It has a gourd-shaped body and movable frets. It plays a vital role in Indian classical music, with its intricate melodies and rhythmic patterns.
No matter which type of plucked string you play or own, make sure to secure it with the right insurance policy dedicated to musical instruments.
Bowed string instruments
Bowed string instruments produce sound when you vibrate their strings with a bow. The instruments that fall under this category are:
Violin: With its four strings and high-pitched sound, the violin is a cornerstone of classical orchestras. It also features prominently in various genres, including folk, jazz, and popular music.
Viola: Slightly bigger than the violin and tuned lower, the viola adds depth and richness to ensemble performances. It plays an essential role in classical chamber music and orchestras.
Cello: Also known as the violoncello, the cello has a deep, resonant tone. It is integral to orchestral arrangements, chamber music, and solo performances.
Double Bass: It is the largest and lowest-pitched instrument in the string family. It makes the base of the sound of bands. It is indispensable in classical, jazz, and contemporary music genres.
Tumblr media
Fretted String Instruments
Fretted string instruments feature frets. The latter are metal strips implanted along the neck to mark specific musical intervals. Examples include the following:
Bass Guitar: Similar in appearance to the guitar but with a longer neck and fewer strings, the bass guitar produces lower frequencies and serves as the rhythmic backbone in many musical ensembles.
Ukulele: A small, four-stringed instrument with roots in Hawaii, the ukulele exudes a cheerful, bright sound. It is popular in folk, pop, and Hawaiian music styles.
Zither Family
Zithers are string instruments featuring a flat body with strings stretched across it. They are played by plucking or strumming the strings.
Autoharp: Equipped with buttons or keys that dampen specific strings, the autoharp enables players to create chords effortlessly. You can see them being used in folk and country music.
Appalachian Dulcimer: Originating from the Appalachian region of the United States, the dulcimer has a long, narrow body and fretted fingerboard. Musicians cherish it for its sweet, melodic tones.
Now that you are well aware of the broadness of string instruments, probably, you have also understood how delicate these pieces of art are. Isn’t it? So, if you own a string or are planning to buy one, do not give a second thought to buying a standalone string instrument insurance plan. This may seem just another piece of formal document to you in the first place. However, its benefits go beyond the same. It protects your gear from many unforeseen events that may make you fall into financial doldrums.

Lea Bertucci — Of Shadow and Substance (Self-released)
Tumblr media
More so than any of my other music, I don’t feel that these works belong to me,” Bertucci writes. “There is something about them that is beyond myself as an individual and provides, if anything, a brief glimpse into what it is to be human in what feels like these waning days of the Anthropocene.”
Based in New York, Lea Bertucci is a multi-talented artist, using electronics with live instruments in performances and installations. She specializes in multi-channel audio work in active acoustic spaces. Bertucci’s latest LP, Of Shadow and Substance, uses live instruments — strings, harp and percussion — expanded with electronics. The album’s motto is: “dissonance, drone, and dynamics.” It’s a perfect summation, but digging deeper, there’s much to be revealed.
The sense of surround is limited by stereo reproduction, but Bertucci renders the music as close as one can get with reverberant atmosphere and swooping lines. Both of the pieces are tuned in just intonation with sweet thirds but a limited amount of in tune fifths. The first track, “Vapours,” is performed by Quartetto Maurice: Alina and Georgia Privitiera, Francesco Vernero, and Laura Bertolino. It is quasi-improvisational, and the quartet was encouraged to visualize two senses of the word “vapors:” vapor appearing in the air, and the hysterics of women (an archaic expression). The outer sections focus on the first idea, with a hectic portrayal of the second in the middle sections. The hardening and elsewhere expansion of sounds with electronics never makes the acoustic nature of the instruments seem indistinct.
“Of Shadow and Substance,” the recording’s second piece, is a reference to an episode from the TV series The Twilight Zone. It was commissioned by the ARS Nova Workshop in Philadelphia. A different ensemble performs here — double bassist Henry Fraser, cellist Lester St. Louis, harpist Lucia Stravros, and percussionist Matt Evans. Of the work, Bertucci says, “This piece measures the accumulation of events over glacial periods of time as a metaphor for social and environmental shifts. It is a meditation on time travel, asking the listener to consider the way events from the past propel themselves into the future.”
The way these disparate strands are united involves the telescoping of motives. The strings move through full multi-stops to harmonics and scordatura. The reappearance of each of these textures gives one the sense of aforementioned time travel. Halfway through, bass octaves in the strings accompany bleeps that could populate another early TV series, Star Trek. Aphoristic harp phrases and periodic percussion provide another layer. Upper register harmonics, bowing behind the bridge, and electronics are accompanied by rustling harp and percussion. The juxtaposition of this high selection of sounds and the imposition of low bass notes and reemergence of regular bass drum beats has brought the piece around to a jigsaw puzzle of a recapitulation. Percussion moves to eighth notes and a pure fifth appears above the bass, reframing the verticals to shimmer with overtones. High harp pizzicatos and morse code electronic sounds move to the foreground. A just flatted seventh in the cello provides still another trajectory through the overtones and delicious dissonances against the drone bass. The last section reestablishes pure fifth and octave in the strings while sine tones accentuate the resulting harmonics. A long denouement ensues, moving towards an inexorable niente.
Bertucci’s work continues to develop. Of Shadow and Substance presents two facets of “drone, dissonance, and dynamics” that speak with eloquence, treading lightly but palpably on extra-musical concerns.

Finally figured out the basic outfit design for my music-themed super hero! She's a character I've had since like, 8th grade, so she's gone through a LOT of changes through the years. In the beginning, she was basically a pink pixie with sound powers, and while I wanted to keep her theme of cute/feminine aesthetic, I needed to update her style. I wanted her to actually LOOK musical somehow, so I tried combining different aspects of symphony/orchestra/chorus/marching band designs. In her regular persona, she does gymnastics and ballet, so I wanted to avoid her super hero outfit looking too much like a onsie/leotard, or something with a skirt (since she wears frilly stuff as casual clothes and what-not). I settled on a vest that is a bit like like marching band uniforms, with a pattern somewhat similar to designs you see for violins or harps. She has shorts over leggings, because I just think that a fun look, cute but a little punk too. Her leggings have vertical stripes, again to be like stringed instruments, and also lines for sheet music. The bottom lines of the vest, her sleeves, and style of the boots keep a little of the pixie/butterfly look (and she still uses her powers to create "fairy wings"; she can make visible sound that manifests as pink energy, either turning into powerful blasts of noise that hit like a solid object, or take the form of instruments she uses in different situations for unique attacks and what-not. she can also imitate any sound/voice, and has "musical powers" in the sense that by singing, she can slightly influence situations to work out well for her). She's got a little side pony-tail, for a touch of 80s pop (her normal look is hair down). Since her real name is Min, I decided to have her "hero symbol" be a minim with a swirl next to it! Big thanks to @v-voeux for giving me lots of magical girl suggestions and helping me think through her design~

walking towards a solarpunk theory of analysis
Climate Change sucks, but Solarpunk Can Save Us! Right?
Climate change is a massive Big Bad that we have to grapple with. It’s part of a supervillain team of Big Bads, namely hierarchy, domination, coercion, and power-over. Those other things are why climate change is an issue, but that’s a conversation for another day. Today, we’re focusing on climate change because it’s the impetus for thinking about solarpunk.
What’s Solarpunk?
Solarpunk is great because it lets us know that the big issues that exist can have responses. For the uninitiated, solarpunk is an arts-and-cultural-movement-meets-activism orientation. It responds to imagination poverty by showing people that a better world is possible. We can have our cake and eat it too. Solapunk communities are renewable, reciprocal, regenerative, and empowering. The great and difficult thing is that it’s descriptive, not prescriptive. That leaves a gap. We can imagine cool worlds of ecovillages, a re-emergence of the commons, and appropriate technology. We can also realize that we’re definitely not there yet. What do we do to prefigure and eventually establish solarpunk worlds in real life?
Now what?
This is where an idea that I’ve been noodling with comes in. Friends, meet Emergent Liberation (EL) theory. The name isn’t set in stone, so let me know what you think. Anyways, EL is a theoretical framing device that is meant to look at the world’s issues, analyze them, and find ways to address them holistically. EL emphasizes decentralization, participatory decisions, and emergent, complex systems. Foundationally, EL makes an attempt at looking at the world as it is in reality and trying to align that with building a society most in line with what would allow for social and ecological harmony. Complex systems are not absolutely predictable, linear, or centralized. They are decentralized, adaptive, and made up of patterns that emerge from individual actors/agents in the system interacting. EL looks at our current system, which is meant to consolidate control, and asserts that the issues that emerge from this system are attempts to simplify, verticalize, and centralize. EL, in its formation, can be a powerful framework to understand how to create solarpunk worlds by highlighting decentralized decisions, co-creation, and community empowerment.
EL and Solarpunk Walk Into a Bar: a Love Story
Puzzle Piece 1 - Complex Systems: EL’s nucleus is an analysis of complex systems. As we said before, solapunk is all about bringing about a good life for all, and remaking society is not going to be an easy endeavor. We have to understand the systems and the emergent patterns that arise. This allows us to see windows, plan actions, and create meaningful impact.
Puzzle Piece 2 - Decentralization and Community-Driven Decisions: If we want to create solarpunk futures, decentralization, and horizontalism are important. The people impacted by a thing should decide what to do about that thing. Empowering communities by distributing power (or designing horizontal structures from the jump) will allow for solapunk dreams to become a reality. EL harps on this point because centralized decision-making has a tendency to be hierarchical, oppressive, coercive, dominating, and unsustainable. In the quest to rule complex systems, central bodies of rulers simplify issues to the point of creating more issues in their wake. EL says, screw that, let’s allow communities to make their own decisions, and give them the tools to co-create what they need.
Puzzle Piece 3 - Participatory Design and Co-creation: It’s important to involve all people in any design or policy practices. When you include everyone in a decision and create the infrastructure to understand and intake everyone’s perspectives, the vision will be much more equitable and inclusive than it could be otherwise. This comes from an understanding that most people are super alienated from the processes that create the decisions they make every day. EL says the people who are most affected by an issue are going to be the best at designing a response. If we actually want to be effective, people have to be able to design their own responses. The interesting thing about working in this way is that creating designs that benefit the least centered end up benefitting those closer to the center.
Puzzle Piece 4 - Emergence and Patterns: Emergent patterns are one of the biggest pieces that a lot of social change ideas miss. Since systems are living beings of their own, there is a level of dynamism and unpredictability to them. This only becomes an issue if our approaches are only focused on reductionism. You can’t reduce emergent patterns, since emergence isn’t simply a linear relationship between the elements in a system. By designing a system where there isn’t a push to control every part of a system, while simultaneously creating room for positively impactful emergence, EL could lead to more effective, sustainable societies.
Puzzle Piece 5 - Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, Belonging, and Access (DEIBA): These are kinda buzzwordy in the milieu of (neo)liberalism, but I think are useful things to think about in how to get from here (doodoo ass oppressive society) to there (amazing pluralistic constellation of solarpunk communities). By being militantly against all forms of oppression, we can make sure that everyone has access to all of the great stuff our communities can provide. EL wants to help bring to light that systems that are not made for all of the elements to exist in harmony are inherently unsustainable. DEIBA is a really nice lens to avoid reproducing kyriarchal relationships.
I hope EL sounds interesting to y’all! I randomly had a moment a week ago where I saw how all of my scientific and philosophical ideas started to form into a kernel of liberatory potential, and I wanted to share some of my thoughts so far. If this sounds like an interesting thing for me to explore, let me know. I’m going to keep developing it, and it’ll take a while, but I’m excited! I feel like I’ve discovered something that could help us change things, and I’d love to develop it with you.
