September is Thyroid Cancer Awareness Month. This week also marks my 8th cancerversary. It’s when life as I once knew it, changed forever. I had a visible lump on my neck the size of a pea and was given 4 different diagnoses. And although I insisted on a biopsy, I kept being told it wasn’t cancer. I had to go to a civilian doctor, and pay out of pocket for a biopsy. And it came back as...well you guessed it, cancer. I thought it was God’s sick way of making me a runner. Let me explain... I was a big girl in my early 20’s (I’m talking size 26 lane Bryant). I started lifting weights and dropped about 110lbs. I even entered a body building figure show and actually placed lol. I was a freakin beast in the gym but cardio was never my favorite. I would put running off any chance I got. And ways I did that was convincing myself I needed to “learn” about running and truly “understand” the principles. I invested in cute running gear and the latest gadgets. It’s as if I was priming myself. So when they told me it was cancer, I couldn’t help but imagine myself running in some local charity 5k (which I still haven’t done btw). I would find myself trying to bargain with some higher power. I still try to make sense of things sometimes but in the end, it’s always the same answer. The courage lies in living another day. Health is precious and most valuable. Hello beautiful plants! Plants have been very helpful in my healing journey. Let me explain. Plants have always been a large part of my life. My parents are avid gardeners and landscapers. And although gardening is in my genes, I couldn’t keep anything viable🙈 no matter how hard I tried. I had given up. It wasn’t until I started my healing journey after cancer that I gave it another shot. I ordered a Monstera plant from amazon and named her Penelope. She was just a leaf and a root at the time and looking at her now! She’s taller than me and has been propagated multiple times! Watching her grow has been so enriching. It’s been quite influential in my healing and sanity. If you’re not a plant lover yet, I highly recommend it. THANK YOU ALL FOR AN INCREDIBLE YEAR🔥 ➕I collaborated with every single artist and creative I sought out! My 1st annual Artiversary was a HIT @newrealmbrewing_va (look out for my next one coming up on the 29th of February!) ➕I put myself out there and met some incredible people! Like the Commander in Chief, @realdonaldtrump ➕I dreamt of getting fluid art into the @virginiamoca and it was not only a success but let to the largest painting event ever in the city of Virginia Beach! Thanks to the help of @katepittman104 with the @thevibecreativedistrict ➕And although I didn’t quite move to Roanoke yet, as planned, I did sell my first home and learned all about how not to sell your house. ➕I fell in love, with reckless abandon, with a girl named glory. And I think she kinda likes me back. Well, she whines sometimes but she mainly wags her tail lol. ➕I mentored artists, led workshops, and ran a business! All while still being fairly ill. I’d say that’s a huge accomplishment and I’m really fucking proud of myself! Because everyday I live at a 7/10 pain and only I know what it’s like to be me. Only I know what it’s like to bargain with this chip. And I wouldn’t trade it for anything. I’m so grateful for the cards I’ve been dealt. You see, although I’ve seen better days, but I see clearER now. And I prefer that. I prefer my small circle of genuine folks that support me and my trade and appreciate the effort (and pain) that it takes to make each piece and still support me. And pay top dollar and then some! What do I do if someone I know is struggling with mental illness? Just BE there. It’s fundamental to know you have someone to count on when you’re having a crisis. Disclaimer: I’m solely speaking from my perspective and not speaking for anyone else here. And I will say every situation has been different in the sense that sometimes I’ve felt the need to share and other times I just want to not be alone. And knowing I have someone who loves me for me makes all the difference. Hearing my husband tell me he loves me and that everything is ok or just venting sometimes is all I need. Sometimes I just need to be alone for a while and cry. Like ugly cry lol. And then I feel better. I feel bad that I make people feel helpless. That they can’t help me. And it’s very hard to explain and formulate words. But there’s no need for everyone to feel sorry when all we want for each other is love. I’m hoping to give you some insight into depression. It affects everyone in your circle. But knowing that it’s not your fault is important and can help you make more informed decisions. Wether you or someone you know lives with mental illness, it’s key to inform yourself about these conditions to help manage them. You are not alone. There are many tools and resources to help patients, families, and caregivers. I challenge you to do your due diligence and inform yourself and seek professional help if needed. This is Glory (bless her 💛). She grew up in a prison program where they train service dogs for veterans. I personally think it’s a great program and I’m very grateful for it. So back to Glory lol. She’s a lover of rocks, mulch and flowers and works for treats. I can’t help but to think about how she grew up. I’m pretty sure she had a dad because she responds better to deep voices but who knows 🤷🏽‍♀️. Another thing Glory is known for here are her shank crafting skills. She has surgical precision upon crafting sharp pointy tools. Don’t worry, I toss these out and no one gets hurt. But I’m grateful that she’s protective of me and my family. We love her and her shanks. I know her momma/daddy would be proud too.
