New eras brought about by Avatars of Fire & Water

I just like this idea that since Korra started a new avatar cycle, she doesn’t want to be one to take all the credit for the avatar’s history with Raava and Harmonic Convergence and she doesn’t want Wan to be forgotten and completely lost to history so her statue is shared with a revamped version of Wan’s and both are embraced by Raava.

Happy tenth anniversary, Wan and Raava!

Today marks a full decade since the premiere of Beginnings Parts 1 and 2, which first aired on October 18th, 2013. It's hard to believe that it's been ten whole years since then!

To celebrate, we have planned a special month-long celebration of Wan and Raava's relationship. Starting on October 29th, this year's Waava Month has twenty special prompts across four themed weeks, along with a few "rest days" to break them up! Here are the themes and prompts for each week:

Week 1, "Journey", October 30th to November 3rd: "Beginnings", "Detour", "Lion Turtle", "Turning Back", "End of the Road".

Week 2, "Duality", November 6th to November 10th: "Human/Spirit", "Fire/Water", "Earth/Air", "Order/Chaos", "Team".

Week 3, "Divergence", November 13th to November 17th: "Cosmic", "Fireworks", "Making History", "Protect", "Divided".

Week 4, "Connection", November 20th to November 24th: "Broken", "Affection", "Identity", "Bonded Forever", "New Legacy".

here’s my annual waava post :)

I haven’t had time to rewatch beginnings again this year. but I absolutely will, maybe around thanksgiving or so? idk why but I always associate waava with the end of fall/beginning of winter... they do have a sort of melancholic vibe. today’s prompt for waava week 2022 was “and the world was gone”, which is similarly melancholic (and also a homage to one of my favorite snow ghosts songs!)

it makes me think of this one moment from beginnings, which I think is currently my favorite raava-moment. it’s when she and wan are going towards the poles and she tells him she wishes they had more time together.

I love that moment so much. it’s such an odd thing to wish for, from a being that is functionally immortal like raava. it’s such a human sentiment. you always want more time with the people you love. you always don’t have enough. you always wish you could go back and relive the best moments.

I’ll be more prepared for next year’s oct 18th (the big 10 year anniversary!), but for now I just want to shout out to three waava friends who I’ve talked to recently, @anesther, @rokurookajima, and @pinacoladamatata. I love you guys so much, and I’ll always, always want more time with you :’)

1.

This is the beginning:

A sharp heat, like a blade, cleaving through her hold on Vaatu.

The human’s flame doesn’t hurt, but the separation from her counterpart does, agonizing in a way she has nearly forgotten, after ten thousand years.

 Raava cries out in pain, and then fury. Foolish human! He is arrogantly resolute in his decision, which only makes her angrier. Ignorant human!

 The human softens, humbled. Offers his assistance. Pah! As if he could do anything but get in her way! She dismisses him with a flick of her form and withdraws, still alight with anger.

 This—this is why she had tried so hard to keep Vaatu from breaking through the spirit veil, so many millennia ago. Humans! They only made things more difficult.

 2.

 This is the beginning:

 The human lights up when she comes to drive Vaatu away from the people of the village. She is still terribly irritated with him, but can see now that he is able to move the element of fire with a certain skill that speaks to time spent with other spirits. Perhaps he could have some use, after all.

 This tidbit of goodwill all but disappears when the Ancient One suggests she travel with the human to help him get stronger. How can she be expected to sacrifice valuable time to help this human, skilled as he may be?  

 The human looks at her and says, Raava, please.

 …She agrees. She is not completely sure why.

  3.

 This is the beginning:

 He asks her, his voice careful and earnest, Why is there so much conflict between humans and spirits?

 A simple question, and yet…

 There was a time, not so long ago, when Raava would have said, because of you. Because of your kind. There was a time when she would have thought of him as part of the problem.

 And yet.

 As he changes, learns, grows through their training—she does as well. As he becomes different, she does as well.

 She would never have thought a human was capable of such things. She would never have thought herself capable of such things.

 And yet—when she passes through him, for that brief, thrumming moment, when she shudders under his skin and through his bones, Raava understands. She sees.

 Peace—harmony—balance between the two worlds, between order and chaos, between spirit and human.

 Perhaps such a thing is achievable.

 And perhaps she and Wan can do it, together.

 4.

 This is the beginning:

 Wan falls, and she rushes to catch him. 

 Below them, humans and spirits crash together, decades of tension frothing to the surface in hideous waves. Yet—for that endless moment, as Wan falls—her only instinct is to catch him. Never mind the chaos around them. Never mind the booming laughter of Vaatu above.

 Her strength slips from her with every passing moment. She is just barely able to get him away from the carnage, to a ledge nearby. She lies there next to him, growing smaller and smaller, light smothered by darkness. She feels rather than sees the destruction of his friends, human and spirit alike. She thinks, I’m sorry, Wan.

 Later—Wan cradles her weakened form in his hands, and then the crook of his arm, as though she were something precious. Strange. How gentle his touch is.

 5.

 This is the end.

 Vaatu looms, great and terrible, his victory imminent. 

 The planets have slid into place. The light of the portals have arched and met in the air, singing with the energy of a thousand stars. The Harmonic Convergence has begun.

 Wan is at the end of all hope. 

 She feels it in his (their) heart, a stuttering staccato, the frantic raw beating truth of it; I am going to die. I am going to die. There is a sort of fear there—perhaps inevitable, he was only human—but, underneath, a quiet regret seeping. I'm sorry, Raava. I'm so sorry.

 And this is what does it. The tenderness of the apology; the gentle resignation. The grief for not only failing the world, but also for failing her. It is the simplest decision.

 So—

 Touch the portal, she whispers. Her voice curls through him, trickles into his veins, and Wan reaches for the light.

 Oh! —the power of the portal. How it seared through them! Burning like flame and cutting like ice, heavier than the world and lighter than the heavens. Their spirits melted into one another, beginning and end, inseparable. Together, now and for the rest of time.

 When she—he—they speak, it is in the voices of all who will come after them, the bridge between two worlds. We are bonded forever.

 And they know, then, bone-deep, soul-deep—

 This is the beginning.
