Photo by @DaisyGilardini // Polar bears’ reproductive rate is among the lowest of all mammals. Females reach maturity at the age of four- to five-years-old and usually give birth to two cubs. Mortality is high during the cubs’ first year of life, and depends largely on the mother’s health. Cubs will stay with their mother for two and a half to three years. Bears can live anywhere from 20 to 30 years. That means a typical female will have five or six litters during her lifetime, of which two in three cubs will die within their first two years. With such a slow-to-reproduce animal, bad polar bear management could have dramatic consequences on their numbers. Mother bears and their cubs generally emerge from their dens in March or April, when the cubs are strong enough to survive outdoors and are ready to make the trek to the ice. Photo by @daisygilardini A polar bear in Wapusk National Park cleans its fur. Polar bears need to stay dry and clean because wet, matted fur is a poor insulator. Wildlife biologist Ian Stirling has noted that in summer, after feeding, polar bears often head out to open water and spend up to 15 minutes washing, licking their paws, chests, and muzzles. They dry themselves by shaking off excess water and rubbing their fur in the snow. In winter, polar bears clean themselves with snow and, when available, water. They rub their heads in the snow, push forward on their stomachs, and roll over on their backs. Despite the fact that they give birth on land, polar bears spend most of their lives hunting seals on the frozen Arctic ocean and therefore they are classified as marine mammals. Mother polar bears are noted for both their affection towards their offspring, and their valour in protecting them. This mother showed great patience while her two cubs played and jumped all over her. When we found her, she was in what is called a “day den,” resting her cubs on the way to the pack ice of Hudson Bay to hunt baby seals. @Regranned from @daisygilardini - The International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) officially classifies the polar bear as "Vulnerable" on its Red List of Threatened Species.™ The worldwide population of polar bears is  estimated to be between 22,000 and 31,000 individuals, of which roughly two-in-three — anywhere from 60% to 80% — live in Canada. Around 600 official hunting tags are licensed each year to native Inuit hunters, who can then sell those tags to non-resident trophy hunters, in some cases for tens of thousands of dollars. Local stakeholders, area residents, Aboriginal people — First Nations, Inuit and Métis — guiding outfitters, trophy hunters, scientists, researchers and politicians of all stripes all have strong opinions about fluctuations in the polar bear population, based on their own private agendas, interests and beliefs. One fact is clear, though, regardless of the debate: Climate change is real, verifiable and plain to see.
