SEEN AT @BY_COUTURE AT @WYNNLASVEGAS: The resurgence of enamel in the world of #PreciousJewelry over the past few years is irrefutable. When it comes to the notoriously difficult and time-consuming vitreous enameling technique known as Plique-à-jour, though, few artists living today can hold a candle to the mastery of @LordJewelry’s #ŞinorkAğdere. Designed to approximate stained-glass in miniature (the term is French for “letting in daylight”), Plique-à-jour was first developed in the Byzantine Empire, in the 6th century AD, and is used today by Agdere most notably in creating the wings for Lord Jewelry’s designs of moths, butterflies, and dragonflies. And while enamel is always front-and-center in Lord Jewelry’s booth, at COUTURE, I was quite taken this year with the figural menagerie brought to life by Şinork and his daughter, Lena. Veritable flocks of doves and swallows took flight in the forms of pendants and rings, of which I particularly enjoyed the Diamond Swallow Wrap-Ring as well as the multi-colored Diamond Swallow Necklace with a single diamond hanging from its beak. The only thing upsetting about the fabulous Black Widow Spider Necklace with Diamonds and Rubies in 18K Gold was that I couldn’t bring it home with me. Meanwhile, that Plique-à-jour Moth Ring with Ruby eyes and Diamonds for the thorax and abdomen gave me life! One lovely New York afternoon, while walking in #CentralPark, jewelry designer and lapidarist @Naomi_Sarna found herself bewitched by the rich autumnal hues of maroon, yellow and green she found on a leaf that had fallen from a #MapleTree. Sarna picked up the leaf and took it back to her workshop, where she sat down at her bench and sketched, rendered, and fabricated today’s @WearableProzac, @NaomiSarnaDesigns’s award-winning #OOAK #MapleLeafEarrings. Handcrafted in #18KGold touched with #BlackRhodium, and with a Stippling of #24KGold for the veins of the leaves, each figural leaf is set with approximately 400 #Diamonds, #Sapphires, and #Garnets, in a variety of colors, that sparkle all the more brightly thanks to the #Ajours bored by Sarna into the gold in which they are set (inset).
