One of my favorite AUs is like. The Jellicles are an indie theater company that put on various shows and plays and musicals and of course its fun to be like "ooh who would play which character" but also who's directing? Who are stagehands? Who auditioned for the same characters? What rehearsal shenanigans happened? Aiughjgjg I loveevlovelivelove this shit.

I’ll keep saying it: I hate the limitations there are to using Shock the Heart. I get why they’re there… but I still hate them. And here’s why.
If you break down Shock the Heart, it functions as any other sci-fi/fantasy “truth serum” does (i.e. Veritaserum, Lasso of Truth). It compels someone to tell the truth.
… Or rather, it compels someone to tell their truth.
Because the truth depends entirely on what a person knows.
Look at it this way: if you see Person A take a plate of cookies and then later see that plate empty, you’d probably say that Person A ate all the cookies. But suppose, unbeknownst to you, Person A actually shared those cookies with Person B.
If you tell someone that Person A ate all the cookies, you technically wouldn’t be lying, because the truth you have is just the truth you saw. To make it more complex, suppose you’re angry at Person A. Based on bias, you’d probably point a finger at them anyway, because your anger is your truth.
All this is to say: as with all other “truth serums,” the truth itself is Shock the Heart’s biggest limitation.
Only allowing Jade to use it on a person once and restricting its usage to weaker-willed, easy-to-trick mages seems like overkill.
Here you have a congregation of teenage boys, most of which have at least 10 ulterior motives and 20 traumatic experiences festering in their still-underdeveloped-brains, who never call each other “friends” and would sell each other out for One Corn Chip in a microsecond.
The process of wrangling the truth out of any of them is hard enough, but when you consider how twisted (no pun intended) each individual truth must be?
That’s a SUPER limitation already and would make for great conflict in the story.
….. also it would let us see Jade do this more often as a treat:

Minthara/chef’s choice, E7
You would. Thanks for requesting this! 💜
You can send a prompt from this list + a ship or platonic pair, and I'll write a ficlet!
---
E7. While relaxing at camp, Character A begins to suspect that Character B is Orin in disguise
"Aren't you a welcome sight?" Shadowheart patted the stool next to where she knelt on her long-disused prayer rug in front of her tent. "Come, sit with me."
Minthara had hardly come out of her evening trance before Shadowheart called upon her. She sat there in her nightclothes, silver hair curiously still in its tight braid. She smiled at Minthara, a wide smile that showed her teeth.
"Why are you awake at this hour?" asked Minthara.
"Sleep's eluded me for a while. I figured a bit of prayer would do me good."
Minthara replied slowly, lingering on the syllables. "Of course. At least there's no dreadful sun burning us in the night."
"Afraid you'll be burnt to a crisp?"
"The sight of it nauseates me." Minthara approached slowly. "When did you resume your prayers?"
Shadowheart smiled again, tilting her head to one side. "I suppose it was recently. Easier to pray without that dreadful sun hiding the moon."
"Yes," Minthara agreed, though she stopped walking at once. She glanced to either side. Nobody else was awake. "And which goddess have you decided is owed your allegiance, after all?"
"The one that stops you from melting in that torturous sunlight, all of your skin sloughed clean off and left to rot."
Hairs stood up on the back of Minthara's neck. Her breaths burned as they accelerated in her chest, and she felt sweat begin to form on her forehead.
These words. So familiar.
That smile.
The creature that wore Shadowheart's form smiled again, flashing her pearly teeth. Slowly, the grin slid into a grimace.
"You look as if you've seen the living dead, my love," said the creature in Shadowheart's voice.
A familiar sensation washed over Minthara, one that had been suppressed the last time she stood before this woman. Fear. The need to turn and run. Pounding in her skull like a headache but twice as vicious screamed for her to get away. Now. But another thought fought against the overwhelming roar of self-preservation.
Where, then, is Shadowheart?
"Your camp's paltry defenses were almost difficult to puncture, at first." A snap of bone cracked through the air as Shadowheart's head suddenly crooked to one side. With a flourish of silver hair turning a dull, waxy yellow, Orin stood up and grinned. She brandished her curved, crimson knife. "But like any spine, the touch of a blade slices clean until only we remain. My darling web spinner, how I have missed the way your body drips with fear-scent."

Fully support your desire to cut down on the extras as they're already so long, but as someone who was also looking forward to the sickfic section and is sad to hear it's been taken out, I will simply have to ask you about it instead! First off the discussion of home in the snippet you shared was delicious - when do you think Mav started thinking of the house as 'their' home? And Ice taking Mav to the hospital has a lot of crunch there around how they're seen and how they act in public, especially if Ice was worried and Mav was kind of out of it. Do you think Ice would have taken Mav in to the hospital if he'd really been spiking a fever and decided he needed it? How would he explain themselves? And I suppose a separate, related question: who are their official next of kin/emergency contacts?
the reason i got rid of the sickfic is cause all those questions were answered better elsewhere in the extras ❤️
i was kind of annoyed that the house inconsistently appears to be the property of whomever the plot calls for at the moment -> another reason to cut the sickfic
Tumblr media
Yes Ice would take mav to the hospital. it happens elsewhere LOL, maverick is extremely incident-prone
Tumblr media
obviously a fun surfing injury with friends != the sickfic’s ice taking “a friend” to the hospital in the middle of the night for dangerous levels of illness-related dehydration… implies familiarity, intimacy above everyone else… the hospital staff would probably assume they’re together, yes, & i don’t think ice would challenge that at all, especially if he had to make sure all the paperwork was filled out right. just not worth the effort. “is there anyone else we should call for mr mitchell?” / “Um no. Just me.” Yeah i took him to the hospital at 4am bc i love him and im worried about him what r u gonna do about it 🤨 violate his hipaa rights? It’s 2009 gay people exist grow up🙄 hospital staff isn’t gonna tell anyone, so who cares
(Luckily for ice in the sickfic he didn’t have to take mav to the hospital)
Tumblr media
the point of the sickfic was to establish a precedent for one of them voluntarily taking care of the other who is unable to take care of himself, to set up the parallel of maverick taking care of Ice when he Really gets capital-s Sick. but then i still can’t bring myself to write ice actually being capital-s Sick because i have some weird neurosis where i simply dislike thinking about ice (powerful guy) being helpless or incapacitated or, um, dead. so the mav-sickfic isn’t really relevant anymore because i haven’t written (and never plan on writing, besides that one half-assed one-shot) the corollary ice-sickfic. so the sickfic became the Nixed-fic ❌
And according to this wip wednesday snippet, they are each other’s emergency contacts. don’t ask me how that works or how they figured that out, idk. some stuff you do have to talk about for logistics purposes i guess. which is kind of the point of all the house-related/money-related discussions I’ve written throughout my fics—they Have to talk about the logistics because that’s real life. But they don’t INTERPRET those logistics or assign them a normative value.
Tumblr media
for instance debriefing presents (maverick’s) death & taxes as the only two things that ever get them to actually talk to each other lol. logistics become a vessel through which they can talk about their situation without actually talking about it. The state of being each others emergency contacts might be a death-and-taxes discussion—acknowledging permanence without acknowledging permanence

mentioned this in my last post under the cut but you have no idea how much it irked me as a physicist to read about how gege consulted a FUCKING ENGINEER about limitless. an engineer. an ENGINGEERRRRRR. i just. not even a mathematician? engineers don't work with theoretical physics. engineers hardly even work with nonreal math! you're out here designing a guy whose powers involve imaginary mass and divergent series and you DON'T even go to like the two fields that actually work with those things on a semi regular basis...an engineer.......what's he telling you....how to build a bridge?????????????

Kirk calling their relationship suffering when Sam cams it the best thing that ever happened to her and the way Kirk is so sure they would have been married when all Sam ever dish was turn him down... the way that he assumes that all they can do is suffer from their love for each other and that it cannot bring joy to either of them.
Ugh.
Truly disgusting. Honestly, it's awful. He's as bad as the grandmother and in the same way, that same way that assumes that anything different, that anything society even remotely disagrees with, must be bad for the people involved and incomprehensible to the people around them.
It's the assumption that queer love cannot be real love, that queer joy cannot be real joy, that love is not love unless it is on their terms.

Back at it with another Ghosts tarot card—this one is Hetty as The High Priestess!
Tumblr media
This card is so much about reconciling one’s inner and outer selves, and learning how to effectively express that internal world; one of the things that really fascinates me about Hetty is that she has such a carefully curated Public Persona (largely thanks to her era/class), but also has such a rich interior life with these withdrawn spells where she just stares out of windows contemplatively for hours at a time, which is what really made me see her as this card. I hope that we get to keep seeing her break down the boundaries between these different sides of herself going forward.
The original Pamela Colman Smith tarot card my design is based on can be seen here, and you can see the first Ghosts card I drew, Flower, here in my Ghosts Tarot tag.

Just saw a post that was like "couples in rwby become canon when they hold hands as the scene's emotional focal point" and I'm just ???
Like I'd be far more lenient on this point if there was no kissing at all. Capcom games, as far as I'm aware, have zero kisses across the board even among canon couples. The closest I've seen is the ending of Devil May Cry 4 when Nero and Kyrie lean into each other before getting interrupted by demons. It's basically a running gag at this point
Not to mention the lead up and chemistry between characters are miles ahead of anything rwby attempts. You expect me to be impressed by lackluster, flaccid "canonizing" moments after witnessing Jake "Fuck you, I only care about money" Muller stare at Sherry like she hung the stars and saying in the most worshipful tone "You saved me... Thank you" as they ride a cart out of an exploding factory? And then to emphasize how much Sherry impacted him, Jake changes his asking price from $50 million per pint of his unique antibodied blood to a motorcycle and $50 for gas
Meanwhile, I didn't even realize that Nora still had feelings for Ren until V6 with the "Give me back my man" line, and Ren never showed any indication of being into Nora at all which is why the V7 conversation and kiss came out of the blue. Nor did Jaune ever show any romantic intent towards Pyrrha. These romances start and end at their kisses

arlis + pity : arlis views pity as something useless, very nearly offensive, but it ends up becoming one of her most powerful attributes over the course of the game. it's not only keeps her grounded, but it's what brings about her most profound actions throughout act 3.
those first few years in baldur's gate, she became more than accustomed to being viewed with pity (admittedly a pleasant change from disgust). still, despite gazes filled with pity or the occasional coin tossed her way as a result, it never helped her. no one saved her, no salvation came her way through pity. it hardened her to it and made her view it with anger, thinking of it as useless, empty. that mindset is present throughout act 1 and, anytime she feels it begin to stir in her, especially in regards to any of her companions, she casts it aside forcefully.
however, it all becomes more nuanced through act 2. she realizes she pities astarion the more she learns, but it doesn't dull the other emotions she feels. it makes the intensity of her fury all the brighter, it sharpens her need for resolution, for vengeance since it's far too late for justice, into a weapon. it startles her to consider that pity is the initial spark that sets something in her to blaze. that pity is at its most potent in the finale of act 2, where she looks at ketheric thorm and finds that, despite the loathing and hatred, she does pity this once great man made so low and so broken by grief. he was loved, by his daughter and his wife, and now there's nothing in him but regret and sorrow. she realizes that she can hold more things in her heart, conflicting things, than she thought possible.
act 3 makes things even murkier given the heightened stakes. the more she learns of orin, of the sheer depravity of what they were raised in, trained and born to be, the more arlis understands there is no other option but death but still mourns that it must be this way, that orin the red was never more than a weapon to be guided by another's hand. encountering gortash's parents and the horror of the house of hope stirs similar feelings in her towards him, clouded by her own history with him, though that pity never strays into absolution. that particular blend of pity becomes understanding, some bitter sense of solidarity given her own childhood, though not forgiveness.
while her pity often weighs heavy on a heart already too burdened, fractured and leaking at the seams, it's what keeps her her. it's what empowers her resolution, makes her most effective, even if it aches so badly it steals her breath away.

Reginald Payne × Alfred Pennyworth VS. Jeremiah Valeska × Bruce Wayne: A Saga.
Hello and good evening, in tonight's episode of "Gotham TV is an insane show for insane people" we're talking about Regional Pain. I mean, Reginald Payne. He is Alfred Pennyworth's "best friend", which in the context of the show's wordplays can fall anywhere on the spectrum of "actual dear friend" to "starcrossed lover", but perhaps most importantly he is a Jeremiah Valeska mirror used to establish a dynamic with Alfred that portrays exactly where does Bruce Wayne get his uhh, interesting habits in regards to his "best friends". you see;
Reggie is introduced as a raging alcoholic and mean druggie, and through him Alfred is revealed as a post-raging alcoholic with drug problems who's barely hanging on and trying not to relapse, kept afloat almost strictly by his immense love for Bruce.
In season 4, Jeremiah Valeska is introduced as a raging alcoholic and most likely a druggie, and Bruce has only slightly started to recover from his fun alcoholism, barely keeping his head above water with an iron grip on his love for Alfred.
When Reggie shows up at the Wayne Manor's door, he lies to Alfred, he is there to ruin his and bruce's lives, uses Alfred for his soft heart, capitalises on their friendship for sympathy and offers a false story, "lost a loved one and i went insane, couldn't do it".
Post-InsanityGas Jeremiah lies to Bruce, he is there to ruin his life, uses Bruce for his soft heart and capitalises on their friendship, keeping face with a false story, "lost the other half of me and i'm not dealing with it well, i can't do this," and Bruce holds his hand through it.
Reggie provokes Bruce so thoroughly, he is willing to go through with their make-believe combat practice too, "You hit me, you draw all the blood you can, i'm giving you a pass and you'll take it, violence is true and real, it's effective." Only Alfred puts a stop to it.
in the "Ace Chemicals" episode, Jeremiah provokes Bruce to hit him, to draw blood, he wants everything Bruce has in him. The only thing keeping Bruce from packing his punches is the knowledge that he has someone to come back to; he has Alfred, and he has Selina.
Reginald and Alfred get drunk together and Reginald tells Bruce about the night the SAS team cought a snake and put the goddamn thing in Alfred's bag. He tells Bruce about how Alfred cooked and made them all eat the snake.
Jeremiah's mother was a snake dancer, he grew up around snakes, he intimately knows how to handle one. He's viper colored and he's basically a snake sleeping in Bruce's bag throughtout season 4.
Reggie is a harsh truth caller, "Why dont you tell Bruce the truth, why are you afraid of him knowing the real you?" Reggie tells Alfred two wine bottles in. "You're a dog Alfred, a vicious well trained dog is what you are."
Jeremiah Valeska sees right through Bruce and becomes his truth caller, "You're so mean Bruce, there's darkness in you, so dark, we're so alike," he tells him.
Alfred tells Reggie that he's "willing to be better than he actually is because he has loved ones to care for, he will not give in to his own violence,"
Bruce tells Jeremiah that he "wants to be better than he actually is because he has loved ones to care for, he will not give in to his own darkness."
Reggie almost kills Alfred, someone very dear to Bruce, and then stays in town, knowing full well Alfred would know where to find him and have his revenge if he survived.
Jeremiah shoots Selina, someone very dear to Bruce, and then allows himself to get cought very easily, staying near and in reachable distance.
5 years later and Jeremiah leaves Bruce half insane and completely shattered, clawing into Alfred's arms in an abandoned warehouse outside Gotham, and noone has ever loved Bruce as much as Jeremiah loves him.
Reggie tears up after Bruce finally corners him, "I didn't mean any harm. Is he okay? He is okay, isn't he?" he trembles as he asks Bruce. Bruce's voice is venom as he reminds him, "You stabbed him; why do you care?" to which Reggie answers, screaming "I care! I damn care!!" because people love each other even in the ways they hurt each other.
Bruce is the one who hunts down both Reginald and Jeremiah for a chance at explanations; Selina is the one who kills Reggie.
Selina is also the one who kills Jeremiah.
And still, throughout all this Alfred is so posessive of Reggie— he actively dissuades detective Gordon from finding out about Reggie and shoos Gordon away. When Bruce asks him why he wont tell the truth about who stabbed him, Alfred says "Believe it or not, Reggie is a mate, and you do not set coppers on your mate now, do you?"
"But he almost killed you."
"we were a team together, he's my friend, if anyone can figure him out it's going to be me, noone else can do it; it wouldn't be right."
Alfred is immediately so protective of his connection to Reggie, "noone else can catch him, i know him, only i can do it right, we know each other like the backs of our hands," he intimately personalises his connection to him.
Jeremiah Valeska hurts Bruce more than perhaps anyone had ever hurt him, but when he calls to him, Bruce determinedly goes alone; Jeremiah is his fight and his only, he's the only person who knows him, the only person who can leash him in, noone else; it wouldn't be right.
Every bit of possessiveness Bruce has Over Jeremiah is a blueprint copy of how Alfred frames his friendships and his love for the people closest to him; ALFRED is where Bruce learnt the ways and whys of human connection and friendship. Really, in the Wayne Manor everyone is just 55 strings of generational patterns in a trenchcoat.

made the decision (I have ap exams in a week) to finally write down what I consider dimensions, universes, time travel, etc in pop culture (I have ap exams in a week) which is great and it’d be fun to turn it into a space looking infographic like thing with a cute artstyle and little references to shows that involve dimensional travel (I have ap exams in a week) but I’m not done and I’m starting to get really tired of trying to conceptualize infinity and how interactions would play out (I have ap exams in a week) because I’m basing what’s less standardized by pop culture on our actual universe so things are more codified and less willy-nilly while still making sense like putting dimensions with similar attributes into families and trying to determine what makes a subdimension and how they operate to fit close enough to pop cultures definition while still having some ground in reality (I have ap exams in a week) I think I should keep working on this

blank period karin is one of the most interesting, complex versions of karin but there's a dearth of content that's dedicated to her in that era
a lot of the content ive seen that features blank period karin is like, sssk fic where she shows up to deliver the baby and is either like, mean or depressed about it, and maybe she and sakura have a moment and become besties, but usually she's there as set dressing, or to like, put the nail in the SK coffin
and like, that scene is absolutely something id want to dig into as a dirty little karin fan, but there's plenty of other shit i think a good karin-centric blank period fic could hit
this list got mad long so here's a read more. check it out.
the creeping, gradual realization that sasuke is not coming back for team taka and will be settling/based out of konoha
generally, any sort of wrangling/reconciliation between sasuke and taka after the war when he's in his new and improved grown up state of mind. if not this, then dealing with the frustrating realization that sasuke will continue to associate with orochimaru and taka whenever he needs anything, while having no intent to maintain serious personal bonds with any of them
in relation to the above, karin havign to deal with the fact that she's probably the only member of taka who is bothered by this, since juugo tends to be passive, and suigetsu is independent enough that if sasuke is fine just being LDBs (long distance bros), he would be totally chill with that. karin!!! not so much
and like i said this would be stuff other than the sarada stuff, but like WHEN the sarada shit happens, how karin approaches the entire sarada situation, whether its like, instant love bc its sasukes kid, or something she needs to force, bc holy shit is that an emotionally complex situation, and holy shit does sasuke do her no favors by asking her to deliver his literal child
aside from the sasuke bullshit, i wanna see karin wrangle with log/mitsuki/other babies(???) being grown in the lab while having no blood family of her own while also being unlikely to ever have her own children
karin also wrangling with the fact that she's creating entire human beings, presumably so that they can be experimented on by orochimaru, which isnt new per se, but is new in the sense that shes now an adult who may or may not have more complex feelings towards helpless children (esp after sarada)
the fact that juugo apparently takes off from taka at some point, and karin and suigetsu either go separate ways or begin working in different hideouts
literally????? any kind of revelations regarding her heritage??? the fact that she busted out the chakra chains in the middle of the war in a very conspicuous moment?? shes a cousin of the future hokage???????? one of two uzumakis left in the world, and the only known pure blooded one, presumably?????????
also this is probably where karin experiments with The First Guy Who Is Not Sasuke, which either fails gloriously in a murder-tinted kinda way, or is wayyy too normal for her to ever be able to maintain it
ALSO i dont think theres a lot of fic that address the long term toll of karin using her healing bites, and it seems like young adulthood would be the time where any wonky shit would present itself
basically i think there should be more fic about how complex karin is in this era, how she tackles leaving behind the sasuke era of her life and forming an identity separate to that, to the extent that she may or may not try to, and she may or may not succeed
