One thing that really stood out to me when comparing the S4 script to the actual episodes was how different Roman acts in the finale when Shiv changes her mind.
It's more or less the same after Kendall lies about the waiter, but up until that point the script has him actively pushing Shiv to vote Kendall in and he actually seems angry at her:
Whereas in the final scene, he's quiet in the background for most of the initial argument and this is literally the only thing he says to Shiv about the vote:
He's not telling her to decide one way or another, and he's not trying to change her mind (he probably knows that she won't). He literally just wants it to be over.
It's such a good change and feels way more in line with where he is mentally at this point. He's clearly uncomfortable with Kendall being in charge in both versions, but the final one reflects how his headspace has changed since the funeral and leads much more naturally into his 'it's all bullshit' bit at the end.
saying tom “won” is disingenuous because it implies that becoming ceo of waystar is winning in the first place. if we’re assigning a winner, it’s unequivocally roman. it’s ambiguous as to what happens to him, and there’s still a certain amount of pain in the final smile he gives but i think he’s the closest to being free out of all of them. at its core, succession is about the cycle of trauma and abuse as it plays out in each respective characters’ insatiable lust for power and this pursuit has only wrought pain time and time again. there’s a reason none of the kids have ever “won” on these terms, because the system of abuse works actively against them every time and their participation only feeds into it. “winning” is not success on the terms of the abuser. “winning” is walking away from the table and choosing not to play.

dream song 29 being recontextualised by the finale is sooooo fucking harrowing…..kendall recanting his admission of killing the waiter being the final insidious thread connecting his arc to that poem wherein the speaker realises he didn’t kill anyone at all. nobody is ever missing. the construction of reality through what is said. AGH
People who hate Shiv or think she was wrong for what she did in the finale are so unserious to me. "How could she screw over Kendall and stop them from keeping the company???" oh you mean the guy who promised they'd run it together and then immediately double crossed her? And then spent the rest of the season trying to cut Roman out of the company too?? How could she betray that guy??? real mystery.
season one finale: shiv betrays tom by revealing her infidelity and lack of interest in committing exclusively to him, an act he can never ever forgive
season two finale: shiv trying to save tom and their marriage, sacrificing her dad's respect
season three finale: tom betrays shiv in favor of logan
season four finale: shiv throws her lot in with tom to stay in very limited proximity to waystar, sealing her fate as the more subservient spouse. tom has *finally* secured her exclusive devotion by virtue of his power over her father's company.
