The Skvader (Tetrao lepus pseudo-hybridus rarissimus L.) is a Swedish cryptid made up by a man named Håkan Dahlmark in 1874, and later constructed by taxedermist Rudolf Granberg in 1918. It’s a combination of a European Hare and a Wood Grouse. It was formerly displayed at the Biologiska Museet which is listed as Permanently Closed sooo I have no idea where it is…… 🫥
ANYhoo just to explain why it’s more cartoonish - I went into this one planning on using it for 2022’s paper ornament.
[Fun fact: Fall is my favorite season and I’d never seen the leaves change color in person because “Florida”.]

Birds of Thargelion
After this I just have Maglor’s Gap and that will complete my series on birds in the Fëanorian realms pre Amon Ereb!
Flora, fauna, geography and environment of Arda Masterlist
Thargelion was the realm of Caranthir, located in the north east of Beleriand just north of Ossiriand and bordered by the Ered Luin, the eastern stretch of mountains that divided Beleriand from the rest of Middle Earth
As always this is not a definitive list! Please feel free to ask more or give me a more specific category!
Around Lake Helevorn and the rivers: Red-breasted merganser, mute swan, white tailed dipper, whooper swan, smew, little grebe, red throated loon, common crane, mallard, common white eye, northern shovler, green winged teal, corn crake, spotted crake, black winged stilt
Mountains: bearded vulture, water pipit, golden eagle, kestrel, peregrine falcon, Rock ptarmigan, common siskin, alpine accentor, northern wheatear, ring ouzel, white tailed eagle, chough, spotted nutcracker, Citril finch, griffon vulture, common redstart, common raven, wallcreeper, common jay, boreal owl, white winged snowfinch, crag martin, common redstart, black redstart
Foothills and forests: black grouse, wood grouse, goshawk, grey white fronted goose, hazel grouse, little bunting, meadow pipit, tree sparrow, hedge warbler, Bohemian waxwing, common kestrel, long eared owl, little owl, marsh tit, coal tit, mourning dove, rock pigeon, woodchat strike
World building notes
-Like most of the Noldor in Eastern Beleriand, many of Caranthir’s scouts keep birds of prey. In Thargelion these are primarily peregrine falcons and kestrels. Hunting with birds was less common however.
--There are populations of Green Elves who live in Thargelion, primarily in the mountains and near the border of Ossiriand. Though they also do not use birds for hunting, certain species are kept as companions or messengers.
-Chicken breeding as an art and science developed during the Watchful Peace. Chickens in Thargelion are appraised for long plumage and colorful feathers. Their eggs are eaten but they are not often used for meat.
-Chickens, peacocks and quails were kept by the Noldor of Thargelion, techniques of raising and breeding them were learned from Sindar and Silvan cultures of Eastern Beleriand. Indeed the Noldor of Thargelion were one of the only Noldor populations to keep quails.
-Bearded vultures appear on the crests of some of Caranthir’s lords and were even kept by a few of them
-Feathers of various mountain birds especially eagles and ouzel appear in wood carvings as an architectural motif during the Watchful Peace in Thargelion
-Out of all the Fëanorian realms, water birds appear most often in art and other cultural references in Thargelion as Lake Helevorn and its wildlife are a central facet of life there especially in times of peace. Wading birds like crakes, cranes and stilts are especially Valued.

didnt want to be extra annoying and ask this on your art blog so ill settle for just being annoying.. was anything in wac inspired by the life series? like designs or well, anything! discovered ur stuff on youtube and went ooooh and then snooped through all the art i could find and was repeatedly reminded of the sillies that occupy my brain. sorry 2 be weird! ik its the worst question to be asked sorry but its hurting my brain wondering and not knowing
Aw shit ya caught me. I was gonna reveal this fact much later down the line bc ive been kinda open that WAC started out as an AU just not for what. Primarily the reason for secrecy is bc i don't want people to look at this story i put a lot of myself and my experience into and go "I can't believe you tricked me into reading about minecraft men" bc the story has expanded a lot past these intial inspirations.
So before i go into all the inspirations, I wanna make this perfectly clear. WAC's plot is almost completely original, baring some small scenes inspired by events in the Life series and the basic set up. It's a three act story that is mostly about me and my partners problems regarding abuse and personhood. The Life Series au was a starting point and it kinda spiraled out from that lollll.
(Also I saw your other ask and it doesn't bother me at all! Its been something ive wanted to talk about anyway simply bc i find the inspirations funny. Plus I promised myself if someone realized and asked I would talk about it. Also i just love talking about inspiration and seeing how you got from one thing to the next, maybe others would like the same.)
1. "Why are they cats?" This started as an au once again but i felt too embarrassed talking about it publicly as a mcyt au so I gave them cat designs. That's the only reason lol
Lain - Inspired primarily by 3rd life and lim life martyn in regards to both his devotion to the king (ren) and mariner (scott). Lain and Mariner originally started as Majorwood shipping cats but then became more about their unhealthy power dynamics and two people being stuck together it spiraled into what we have now! Especially since I believe Martyn killed Jimmy (Canary) in 3rd life? Or at least scott accuses him as such so that's where that came from.
Mariner - 3rd/lim life scott! His obsession with the sea, his name, his relationship to Canary, his ties to Lain, and his design is pulled from scott. That's about all that's similar now though. His personality is completely different. Hes a shitty fuckinh dude.
Canary - 3rd life Jimmy Solidarity but like fucking barely and just bc hes married to mariner (flower husbands). Took his name from the fandom calling him a canary because he always dies first and that's basically it. Also worked with the bird name theme i was starting to go with
The King - 3rd life ren but again fucking BARELY except for his relationship with Lain and being a king and trying to conquer shit. That's like. It.
Condor - he's just mr good times with scar. Hes like, the closest to his mcyt counterpart probably and im not even sorry. Took primarily from 3rd life and lim life once again though in regards to his relationship with Crane (Cleo), Warbler (bdubs), and Scout (Etho) (and also the fact the group is called the flock is a cheeky callback to the family being called the clockers)
Crane - stated above, Cleo, but only bc shes mom in the clockers family. Nothing else.
Warbler - limlife bdubs but again fucking BARELY. I think the bdubs skin is the most i drew on for her design with the fucked up eye and teeth.
Grouse - mr 3rd life grian. Dating condor because desert duo and feeling indebted to him for that as well. And just. Generally little guy vibes.
Scout - etho. Just for chill vibes. Dating Crabe because hes "dad" in lim life and dating Wolf (Joel) bc of double life halfslab.
Wolf - Primarily last life joel with the living alone in the woods thing and joel just being a like. Maniac in the life series with the murders and such. Dating scout again bc of double life. The her having canary's skull thing is just for my friend who is a big fucked up smallidarity shipper.
Sycamore, coal, and aster are original characters i made specifically for the story.
I would again like to state that the story is BARELY tied to things that happen in the life series, and its mostly my personal experiences and silly thoughts. The silly minecraft men were just the jumping off point and all of their arcs are original so there ya go <3

Sing Us a Song
Read on AO3!
Concept art
A/N: I just like writing Mare singing songs to Mad at Phantom's bar.
--
Phantom looked up when Jackie gasped, spotting Mad and Mare walking into the bar and heading toward them.
“I swear you said you’d never come back,” Phantom groused as Mare reached the bar, ensuring Mad had a seat before turning his attention to his brother. “You gotta stop messing with me, my heart can’t take it.”
“Your heart will cope,” Mare rolled his eyes, tapping his fingers on the bar. “Mad wanted to come out for a bit, so I suggested here, being that it’s a place he’s familiar with.” He nodded at Jackie when the hero handed him two glasses, one filled with whiskey and the other with plain water.
“He also said he wouldn’t perform here again,” Jackie piped up, smiling at Mad. “He didn’t say anything about not coming in for a drink. Besides, he’d go anywhere Mad does; they’re practically attached at the hip.”
“Go drink your drinks,” Phantom said to Mare, wiping the area of the bar that Mare had tapped. “I’ve got to make sure the next set are prepared.”
--
“I can drink, you know.” Mad watched as Mare downed his glass, motioning to Jackie for a refill before turning to smile at Mad.
“Drunk Mad is for my eyes only,” he joked, gently flicking the tip of Mad’s nose with a smirk. “You wanted to go out, not get drunk after two shots. Relax.” When Mad rolled his eyes, Mare leaned forward to give him a kiss on the forehead, then leaned back to see the secret smile tugging at the corners of Mad’s lips.
“You can’t kiss my annoyance away all the time,” he mumbled, eyes widening when Mare hopped up to sit on the bar, propping a leg up and looking at Mad with bright eyes.
I adore you, I annoy you,
What can I say? I can’t ignore you.
The gleam in your eyes is like starlight,
And I just need to hold on tight.
Coffee-coloured hair, dotted freckles,
I adore the way you stare.
The smiles you save just for me,
They’re all I see.
----
Jackie frowned when he heard a thud on the bar beside him, pausing his glass drying to look at Phantom slouched over the bar, glaring at Mare. He watched Phantom slap his face with a hand, the other resting on the wood in front of him, slowly dragging his hand through his hair to cover his annoyed expression.
“Phan?”
“Why does he do this?” Phantom’s voice was muffled, but Jackie could clearly hear the exhaustion in it.
“What are you so miffed about? He’s singing.”
“He’s singing on my bar, but only to Mad.” Phantom peered through his fingers at the couple, and Jackie followed his gaze to see that Mare was indeed only focusing on Mad while the other patrons were listening to him.
“So? Can’t a man sing a song to his loved one?”
“Nobody’s listening to the musicians I paid to perform here, Jackie!” Phantom said, voice a little louder as he threw his hands up. “Nobody’s listening to them, because they’re all listening to Mare!” He fell back against the bar, covering his face with a hand as Mare continued to sing, lost in his own little world.
Jackie frowned again, resuming the glass cleaning as he looked at Mare and Mad.
----
And I’ll sing this song,
Until the end of our days.
Because I love how you smile,
And the shine of your gaze.
I’ll follow you,
To the ends of the earth.
Being by your side,
I can’t begin to count the worth.
Mare finished his song, caressing Mad’s cheek as he smiled, then was pulled out of the tender moment by the bar patrons cheering and clapping. Looking around with wide eyes, he saw Phantom slouched over the bar and Jackie’s apologetic shrug, then tilted his head and downed his last glass.
Giving Jackie a two-fingered salute, he quietly led Mad out of the bar, ignoring the cries of the patrons, getting Mad comfortable in the car before starting the engine, sending a quick apology to Phantom and driving home.
--
“Phan’s upset.” Mad stated as they walked through the front door, helping Mare out of his jacket and hanging it up before looking at the musician.
“He’s always upset. I told him I wouldn’t perform there again, and people just keep being drawn to my voice when I sing to you,” Mare replied, rubbing his hands through his own hair as he toed off his shoes and walked down the hall toward the bedroom. “Sometimes I hate how well I can sing.”
“You don’t hate your singing skills,” Mad rebutted, tugging off his shirt and pulling on one of Mare’s old shirts, “You hate that other people intrude on your private moments of singing.” Swapping his jeans for a pair of soft sweatpants, Mad climbed into the bed and fiddled with the blanket as he waited for Mare to join him.
“My problem is nosy people, yes,” Mare agreed, fixing his hair before climbing into the bed in just his boxers, sitting beside Mad and wrapping an arm around his shoulders. “My problem is also spontaneity; I can’t refuse an opportunity to write you a song.”
----
As Phantom locked up the bar, Jackie picked lint off his coat, watching his boyfriend frown as the keys got stuck in the lock.
“It’s not his fault,” he began quietly when Phantom walked back to him, taking his coat and shrugging it on. “You’re like sirens: your voices just attract people. If you both sing, you’ll attract a huge crowd.”
“I know,” Phantom sighed, taking Jackie’s hand and walking with him down the street before sending them home. “I’m not that angry with him, really, just a little annoyed that he keeps showing up at the bar.”
“He needs to take Mad somewhere less popular than the bar,” Jackie said, tilting his head as an idea came to mind. “What if we opened up the back of the bar for private booths?” His eyes gleamed as he looked at Phantom, smiling at his idea.
“It is a wraparound bar,” Phantom replied, tone considering. “And we’d get more people if we made use of the back part. Jackie, how are you so clever?” He wrapped his arms around Jackie and gave him a kiss on the side of his head.
“Mare could even perform in the private room to a small crowd if he wants,” Jackie continued, moving with Phantom as they headed for the bedroom. “Talk to Night about a little more funding to furnish that section tomorrow, then we can talk to Mare about it.”

It's another Band of Brothers snippet afternoon!
Here's Shifty/McClung (McShifty!!) for fellow citizen of Gremlin Town @cody-helix02. Go see their Band of Brothers art stuff, you're gonna lose it over how cute it is.
--
Earl keeps his fingers wrapped tightly around Shifty’s wrist and thinks about how you can track how quickly the storm is approaching by counting the heartbeats between the lightning strike and the thunder that trails after. He’s doing it now, counting each imprint Shifty’s racing heart makes on the inside of his wrist, except the thunder is not thunder and the rain of artillery fire does not abide by any of the usual laws of nature – except for physics, of course, high-explosive shells fired up at 2,700 feet per second being required, at some point, to come down.
Boom.
The crash is terrific, and might as well be right on top of them. Earl pictures a quieter wilderness than this one, untouched by artillery, with some of the wild left in it, and a house where no one so much as raises their voice. He’s going to live somewhere peaceful after all this noise. He’s going to bring Shifty with him, too, and it doesn’t matter a jot if it doesn’t make sense. He can decide things now and mean them, in this liminal space where he exists between living and dying.
Crash.
Three shells land in such quick succession nearby that the earth itself trembles mightily, sending Shifty tumbling into him, and Earl into the frozen earthen side of the hole. Earl wraps his arms around him and holds him fast, pressing his face into the back of his neck while the world ends around and above them. After the war, they’ll walk off into those quiet woods and take their own sweet time deciding whether they want to come back out again or not. They’ll hunt what they were brought up to hunt, beasts instead of men – if either of them can remember how to shoot a beast and not see a man instead. At night they will set a fire and sit by it together without having to worry about anyone seeing it, nothing worse hiding in that tranquil darkness than what they’ve already seen.
Bang.
The next few tree bursts are further away, and Earl becomes aware of other sounds in the world again, of Shifty breathing against his chest. He doesn’t let go, not for a long time – not until the woods are deceptively serene again, silent in a way they shouldn’t be. When at last he does, Shifty doesn’t move straight away.
“When all that’s happening,” he says, “I just can’t think about a single thing. It drives everything clean out.”
Earl hesitates. “Yeah,” he lies. “Me, too.”
--
The woods are silent, in the way that woods should be – not silent at all, but bereft of any greater noise that drowns out the breeze in the tip-top of the tall trees, birdsong and the occasional rustle of something small naming itself king of the undergrowth.
Shifty picks his away around several long fingers of the very last vestiges of the winter’s snow, Earl right behind him in boots with matching clumps of springtime muck clinging to them. The haul from today’s hunt is just a few grouse, but Earl doesn’t mind. He might have used up all his luck overseas, but he can get on without it.
Shifty, steady on his feet again after one last desperate attempt on his life by a war ungracious in its death throes, comes to a stop and looks up into the canopy of trees, one eye squinted closed against the sunshine.
“Sometimes when we’re out here,” he says, “I don’t have to think about a single thing. I just am.”
Earl looks up, too, blurring his gaze until it’s nothing but iridescent green. “Yeah,” he says. “Me, too.”

Pale 7.8 extra
Interesting, I think this is the first extra material we've had that is just normal text? (ie not in-universe writings, not multimedia)
Very interested to get to see more of Lucy's mom. So far we have her meeting Avery's parents... I wonder if Verona's dad was invited? Also curious if this is just a general getting to know child's friend's parents meeting, or if they want to talk over specific concerns
We were friends, before, as much because of the girls putting us in close proximity as anything.
I hadn't thought of Verona's mother as being friends with Lucy's, it's never come up before. Though I know my parents didn't remain close to any people they spent time with because I was friends with their children as a kid
“Don’t even get me started on work schedules,” Brett told her.
Taken by itself, nothing Verona's dad is saying would necessarily be a red flag, but combined with everything we've already seen of him it bothers me. Immediately going into complaining about work when asked what he does, the grousing about Verona that doesn't seem lighthearted to me...
“Is she getting along with either of the two more?” Connor asked.  He looked at Kelsey, who frowned.
don't dig for information like that! If there was something going on, let her tell you in her own time. Also, if Avery was dating one of the others, and they weren't out either, this would be a great way to tip off their parents.
It’s like her skin crawls if she’s in my company for more than five seconds, she runs off to her room or leaves the house at the next opportunity.
now this one is a red flag
“This was weeks of moments,” Brett said.  “I was looking things up and thinking about oppositional defiant disorder.”
of course you were
I can’t talk to her about my work, basic household needs, school and homework…
notably absent from this is her own interests. Why would your work be the first thing you think about talking with your child about?
So clever in many ways that she outsmarted her way out of doing well in school.
I consider this a valid strategy, if sometimes self-sabotaging
"She took up habitual lying…” “It’s that imagination,” Jasmine said.  “She had no outlet.  She stopped art, and she had nothing, so she started telling stories.”
...hmmm. Well obviously she can't do this now, and doesn't seem to need it, but I'm curious what was going on with that, if it was really just an over-active imagination.
Also, man but everything Brett says about Verona is framed in a negative light
Except, I suppose I’m lucky she’s slow to develop. She’s the most kid-like of the three, I think. A late bloomer.
hahahahahaha
“When she and Lucy were old enough to know how to navigate the web but young enough to not know about internet history, let’s just say the searches I saw raised a few eyebrows.  Only when Verona was there.”
yeah that tracks. Both for Verona's character and for that age range
“I thought about one of those wilderness survival retreats.  You know those?  Send the kid out into the woods to rough it, disconnect from technology and outside influences, make them build their own fires, teach them self-reliance and discipline, respect for authority?”
oh hate that. And I liked camping as a kid! But why the fuck are you bringing "respect for authority" into perfectly good outside time
He said that as much as I or Lucy might want to look at this as a resolution, a release, it isn’t. All of that stress and worry and lack of resolution is still there. It’s not fixed or better. She’s certainly not happier or healthier in the wake of it.
:( I'd like to think she got some closure from it... but she certainly isn't less stressed, though there are obviously extenuating circumstances
“I wanted to ask about Julie Hardy,” Connor said. “Going back to the subject of influences-”
...and this would be the catch with Avery's dad. And also the reason why Ms. Hardy's been so careful about interacting with her.
I was awkward and struggled and I tried on a lot of different hats and explored a lot of different identities as a way of diagnosing and trying to fix what was wrong with me.  When it was just regular puberty.
:|
“Avery has expressed some concerns to her mom.  I was hoping to get a clear picture about why, but… Brett’s take is only half a picture, isn’t it?”
good that they're talking about this, and not taking him at face value
Verona takes in stuff and digests it privately, and her mom’s similar to her in that. The thought processes behind the scenes can be impenetrable sometimes.
hmm. Not sure what I have to say here, but I want to leave a not for myself about similarities between Verona and her mother. Wonder if that's making things with her dad worse?
“I just-” Jasmine started, stopped, shook her head.  “If she’s going to be pushed to take action, I want it to be later.  When she’s equipped, educated, grounded and secure in herself.  Change the world, you know?”
I have some bad news for you about what's going on this summer
“And if you don’t have those things, that grounding, education, preparation, what happens?  Another Paul incident.”
or considerably worse
OH! New section! Lore section! Murderer section! Going to analyze this excruciatingly:
Non-italics likes John, which narrows it down to the Kennet Others (no one else knows him). "Everything falls into place" so there's more than just power at stake? Both Kennet and "the rest of us" are taken care of (wording seems to imply once italics takes the seat). Who is that? The rest of the Kennet Others? There's not all that many of them.
Hmm! “The girls. Miss picked some scarily good ones." This would imply to me that Miss was not part of their group. I'd already been leaning towards her not being involved, but this is further confirmation.
italics doesn't want to kill them. General antipathy to violence (would be weird for someone aiming for a war seat) or good feelings to them in particular?
italics was also opposed to the school. OH! finally answer to something someone asked me way back when I was speculating about why Miss picked the girls: if she was trying to keep them controlled, why give them access to the school. Well besides the fact that I'm less suspicious of Miss now, going to the school gives them access to knowledge and power that isn't routed through the murder suspects.
"playing our parts"... kinda makes me think Fae, but that's a tenuous connection. And "we all"... so there's more than just these two.
Very ominous all over!

⟬ @ghostlyanon / itto’s birthday 6 • 1 ⟭
For his special day, she had a special parcel prepared!
The gift box was not big, but it contained not one single present, but a pair of smaller -but not any less significant- gifts she prepared and gathered for him.
She observed him intently as he opened the box, waiting for his reaction— But as she could barely contain her excitement for the occasion and as he would take each gift to inspect, she would quickly talk about it or explain to Itto their origin.
For one, there was a smaller box that guarded some delicious pastries and sweets she commissioned for him: multicolored macaroons and onikabuto-shaped chocolates. Though surely they wouldn't last long, they were a special treat she hoped he would enjoy after his birthday meal.
Secondly, a tiny wooden figure with a chain attached to it. This resembled -or intended to a famous figure within Inazuma Itto was a fan of: Miss Hina! A special friend of Annie's had taught her the art of wood carving, and though she was not as skilled as her friend Anita, she believed the figure to carry enough resemblance to Hina to gift Itto.
Lastly, the gift she was most proud of: a special card back design for his Genius Invokation TCG deck as an illustration that resembled Tenshukaku from Inazuma, which glittered if tilted by the sides. This was a limited edition offered as a reward for participating in a TCG event at Mondstadt and Annie needed to fight her way through it to gather the necessary points to acquire it.
"— And I played 150 rounds to get it, but I-I only managed to do it because you taught me how to duel" Annie followed, with a smile brimming in both pride and fondness for the oni.
With him being as tall as he was, she couldn't surprise Itto with a kiss, but for now, she contented herself with a hug for him— until she had the chance to shower him with more affections later on.
"Happy Birthday, Itto... I... I can't ever thank you enough for being here. If it's okay, I-I hope I can stay next to you for many other birthdays too."
Tumblr media
Part of what made a surprise so thrilling was discovering it, but Itto couldn't deny that it was adorable watching Annie become a jittery, excitable mess. He wouldn't grouse at her for explaining the gifts because her enthusiasm was what made his birthday great.
"These smell amazing!"
Sweets were a rare treat for him and the Arataki Gang, considering chocolates and artisan desserts were on the pricier side. Rightfully so, he realized, as he had already bitten away half of a crackling macaroon. The soft and chewy inside, paired with the tang of the filling, made him crave finishing off the rest on the spot. Instead, he finished the one had had started, licked his fingers clean and pushed the box aside.
There were other presents to enjoy, and he didn't want to ruin them with sticky fingers — especially when he saw the small, wooden figure of Miss Hina.
The gasp he released was exactly what one might expect from a fanboy. Itto carefully pinched the chain and lifted it with a level of care that further proved just how deeply he admired the advice columnist.
"It looks just like her!" To a professional, it likely lacked detail, but the oni was far too grateful to nitpick a gift from the woman he adored. The shape was enough, therefore he would cherish it for the rest of his life. In fact, the chain would be slightly pried apart and squished back together just so it could dangle from his belt.
Grand and memorable as the first two gifts were, it was the last that left him breathless.
Tumblr media
"S—Shiny. It's shiny!" He tilted the card back and forth, letting the light of the noonday sun cast iridescent streaks across the illustration. He could have spent the rest of the evening ogling the design, except he had to admire the true beauty sitting in front of him.
Annie had done this for him. She had toiled away, battling an impressive number of opponents and winning just to earn this one, pretty card for him.
A hug was enough. A hug was all she could have given him, and he would have happily accepted it. Annie was and always would be the best gift the world could have given him. He adored her with his whole heart, and he hoped the way he embraced her in return proved as much.
"I should be thanking you, y'know? You're the one puttin' up with me." He tossed shame aside and pulled her in, giving her a comfortable seat in his lap that made nuzzling into her all the easier. Voice soft and low, he continued to lavish her with grateful praise. "I'm always gonna want you around, for my birthdays and every day in between. You're my Starlight, and I'm never gonna let you go."

Woodcutters (re: Thomas Bernhard)
Thomas Bernhard’s Woodcutters (Holzfällen) from 1984 is a singular purging paragraph of complaints cleverly disguised as a fictional novel. It’s explained that earlier at the graveyard to bury Joana who committed suicide, our unnamed narrator also collided with his one-time friends the Auersbergers. Herr Auersberger and his wife inconveniently invite him and other mutual friends to an untactfully timed ‘artistic dinner’ after the funeral to honor an actor from the Burgtheater in Vienna. When the actor finally arrives he dominates the late night dinner of champagne, Balaton pike, while sputtering through potato soup, plenty of white wine and dessert with an egoistic onslaught of his supposed mastery performing the role of Hjalmar Ekdal in Ibsen’s 19th century tragicomedy The Wild Duck. The parallels to a dreadful suicidal confrontation with the cold insistence of facing painful disclosures of truth at any cost for Bernhard are never fully announced. A good percentage of the narrator’s excoriating ruminations are recounted with exhausting precision while sitting in a ‘wing chair’ at the Auersberger’s home during the ‘artistic dinner’ and while waiting for the guest-of-honor who’s exceedingly late. Bernhard’s narrator agonizes through his unpleasant iñner frustrations from the vantage of the ‘wing chair’ obsessively enough to offer a distinct rhythmic quality to the tirade of regrets, second guessing, misanthropy, and complex hateful repetitions (the wing chair is referenced over 100 times!). There are other chairs he imperiously sits on while expressing his extreme and mostly silent dissatisfaction, a dining room chair and a sitting room chair. All the drudgery and pitfalls of the high-culture pretenses of the Auersbergers, Joana, the Burgtheater actor, the ‘Viennese Virgina Woolf’, et al, serve as Bernhard’s deeply scrupulous grousing clenched neck high with a Kierkegaardian injunction on the ethical limitations of leading an aesthetic life. All of the narrator’s so-called friends are diagnosed, cut, and chopped down like cord wood from the ‘wing chair’ as leading aesthetic lives in the name of culture. They all seem more and more degraded and self-serving as our narrator recalls plaintively sitting in the ‘wing chair.’ It’s easy to see why this thinly veiled roman à clef irritated the hell out of the real-life composer and former friend Gerhard Lampersberger to sue Bernhard shortly after publication due to his unmistakable likeness with Herr Auersberger, a sad and drunk ‘successor of Webern.’ Bernhard’s high point near the end of the novel is to suddenly recognize a faint glimmer of value in a life of philosophy and woodcutting by way of the garrulous Bergtheater actor. This call to philosophize-while-cutting-wood conclusion of Bernhard’s can’t be ignored with regard to a slightly foreboding photo from the 1920s depicting Martin Heidegger and Hans-Georg Gadamer cutting wood at Hiedegger’s hut at (or near) Todtnauberg (‘the mountain of death’). Somehow for the narrator the value placed on old people, philosophers, and woodcutting carries us back to the forest, philosophy as art, a singular ideal…found somewhere in the barrage of Bernhard’s world-weary dissatisfaction. Best Things to do in Vancouver
Best Things to do in Vancouver
Best Things to do in Vancouver: The time for circling the wagons is over; let’s get started. The top activities in Vancouver, one of the most liveable cities in the world, are listed here.
The western Canadian metropolis is an example of urban architecture constructed on the pillars of a town, and it checks off box after box. The top attractions in Vancouver are influenced by both its past and its present, with futuristic museums tucked beside famous neighbourhoods and mountains in every direction. The list goes on and on and includes parks, beaches, eateries, pubs, and spas, but we’ve grown to expect that from Vancouver.
Stanley Park
It’s what:
There are beaches, an aquarium, playgrounds, a pool and splash park, botanical gardens, a golf course, 17 tennis courts, and many more attractions in this 1,000-acre must-see park.
Why go:
You could easily spend a day inside the park’s boundaries with everything it has to offer.
Try biking the Seawall on the outside, or go inside to explore the 40 miles of paths that wind among ferns and centuries-old cedars.
Beavers, raccoons, great blue herons, bald eagles, coyotes, and occasionally even whales should be observed. Ride the well-known Ghost Train in the fall for a frightening Halloween adventure.
Granville Island
It’s what:
This old waterfront industrial site, which was renovated in the 1970s and is technically a peninsula rather than an island.
It is now home to a public market, food stores, restaurants, artist studios and galleries, retail stores, and a welcoming green area.
Why go:
Spend the afternoon on the island by taking a sweet small Aquabus.
Everything from confections to cheeses to bread to meats can be found in the huge public market.
Pick up a few things and have a picnic next to False Creek, or treat yourself at the market’s food court, which is stocking with delectable regional fare.
 Mount Grouse
It’s what:
Locals and visitors alike throng to this mountain, known as the Peak of Vancouver, for outdoor activities throughout the year.
Why go:
Grosse Mountain is a year-round attraction with activities like hiking and ziplining in the summer, ice skating and snowshoeing in the winter, plus lumberjack shows and grizzly bear encounters in between.
And also, accepting a challenge? Try the Grouse Grind, a 1.8-mile trek with 2,830 stairs that ascends the mountain by 2,800 feet. For breathtaking views of the city and the ocean, simply ride the gondola up.
Pacific Arts Market
What is it
Over 40 artists from Vancouver and other parts of British Columbia are representing in this almost 2,500-square-foot gallery space with works of art, jewelry, and other handmade products.
Why go:
Visit amazing local artisans and pick up a one-of-a-kind keepsake.
However, there are paintings, ceramics, jewelers, fibre arts, wood carvings, and goods like candles and teas that are crafting by hand.
However, there is art in the vibrant room to suit every taste and budget.
Since artists frequently change, it’s worthwhile to return frequently.
Richmond Night Market
It’s what:
However, it’s open on weekends and holidays from May through October. This is North America’s biggest night market.
Why go:
You can have a taste of Asia’s renowned night marketplaces at the Richmond Night Market.
However, shop for presents and accessories at the retail stalls after sampling meals like grilled squid, pho fries, gyozas, roti mac & cheese, and nitrogen ice cream at the food stalls.
Games, live entertainment, and excellent people-watching are all available.
Vancouver Whale Watch
What is it:
Marine life is abundant in British Columbia, including orcas, humpback whales, seals, dolphins, and more.
An educational experience is provided by a whale watching tour that prioritizes conservation, such as Vancouver Whale Watch.
Why go:
Discover more about marine conservation, whale biology, and migration while admiring Vancouver’s waterways. travelrelm

Birds of Dorthonion
Flora, fauna, geography and environment of Arda Masterlist
Dorthonion was a region north of greater Beleriand. It was a cool region covered in steep slopes, conifer forests and Heath covered highlands. The mountain range Ered Gorgoroth bordered it on the south and above it was the fields of Ard Galen. It was inhabited by the Arafinwëan host following Aegnor and Angrod and later, the human host following Bëor. Nomadic and semi nomadic groups of the northern Sindar and Avari also possibly lived there
As always I included world building notes at the end so it’s not just a list of species
In the conifer forests: black grouse, willow tit, goldcrest, mistle thrush, pine grossbeak, common tree creeper, common redstart, black woodpecker, chiffchaff, coal tit, common raven, crested tit, wood grouse, goshawk, spruce grouse, black throated thrush, pine bunting, boreal owl
The highlands and around Tarn Aeulin: graylag goose, common nightjar, common kestrel, snow crane, hen harrier, tundra swan, horned grebe, common crane, blue duck, water rail, black francolin, northern pintail, velvet scooter, great bittern, pallid harrier, rough legged hawk, little egret, wood lark, corn crane, black necked grebe (migratory), garganey, Merlin
The cliffs and slopes: see see partridge, rock dove, great bustard, long legged buzzard, common quail, black headed bunting, booted eagle, chukard, barred warbler, northern wren, little owl, white throated dipper (near Rivil’s well), black winged kite, steppe eagle, roller
The mountain border: bearded vulture, red fronted serin, black stork, snowcock, horned lark, rock bunting, wallcreeper, blue rock thrush, red kite, peregrine falcon, golden eagle (rare), white wagtail
World building notes:
-The vague images of pine grossbeaks were embroidered on the blankets of Bëorian children using a diluted version of the dyes created from blood madder and coal. The name in Bëorian Taliska translates to pine song bird.
-The Arafinwëan host of Dorthonion as well as some of the Avarin groups hunt with birds of prey which are also used by some of the scouts. Kestrels and Harriers are the most commonly used species. The practice is less common than among the Noldor of Eastern Beleriand however.
-Feathers (usually of peregrine falcons or common kestrels) were also used as a method of communication among Arafinwëan scouts during the times of year where weather would allow for this, left in strategic locations, lodged into the earth or tucked into trees to indicate presence or dangers.
-Eggs of various ground species were eaten by the Bëorian population and there was a practice of burying the eggshells. This was learned from the elves of Ossiriand prior to their settling in Dorthonion.
-Birds eggs appear in Northern Sindar art, in or separate from nests. Though the eggs of certain species have different meanings, they are commonly associated more generally with fragility and defense. Their images may be created through pigments made from certain actual eggshells as well as minerals and plant based dyes. One common motif involves a nest of eggs upon a steep slope or cliff.
-Birds appear throughout Bëorian songs and poems. Most commonly mentioned are the general name for the “fisher birds” (wading and diving birds) seen on and around Tarn Aeulin, as well as several of the smaller songbirds found in the pine forests such as pine grosbeak, tree creepers, and thrushes. After the Bragollach the names for some species became lost or translated differently.
-Also it’s been a headcanon of mine for awhile that Baragund would take Morwen when she was a young child out to the cliffs to watch the birds. He would teach her to identify them by their call. She remembers a lot of them, even as an adult though they are called different names and their habits are often unfamiliar.

That grouse? I drew that with mostly sharpie. Turns out a dying sharpie can do some nice textured grays if you know what you’re doing.
