why can’t i say that i’m in love
katie mccabe x fem!reader
vaguely inspired by secret love song by little mix! i can’t find the request to link it but anon you are a true soldier for waiting for this for how long you have so thank you for your patience!
Tumblr media
underneath the fluorescent glow of the lights beaming across the emirates stadium, you stood on the sidelines, your usual spot - as you watched your girlfriend shine and showcase her talent on the pitch. the chants of her name echoed around you when she won the ball through one of her famous tackles, and you couldn’t help but feel a swell of pride in your chest, knowing that you were surrounded by thousands of people equally as captivated by the irish woman as you were.
well, maybe not in the exact same way that you were, but they didn’t know that. nobody did. here, you were merely an addition to the blur of red and white shirts and scarves in the stands.
just another voice, merging with all of the others belting the chorus of ‘the angel’.
nothing special.
and with that thought, the cheers and applause surrounding you quickly became almost taunting, leaving a sense of unease lingering in the depths of your soul. behind the facade of her fame and success, and you being simply a fan, another face in the crowd making up a sold out stadium, lay a hidden truth. a truth that threatened to tear apart the already incredibly fragile fabric of your relationship.
you and katie had fallen in love against all odds and expectations, drawn together by what you would call fate - and a passion that transcended all possible boundaries. however, in a world, her world, where public image and professionalism was everything, especially with the way social media was changing - the revealing of your love would jeopardise not only katie’s career and standing within the football community, but your life too.
especially as you weren’t used to the madness of being a public figure.
katie had been in very public relationships in the past, and was determined this time to not give strangers, or to even her own ex a reason to merely look in your direction or attempt to ruin what the two of you had. you deserved more than being reduced to a gossip topic or stupid joke on a so called ‘podcast’ and your girlfriend insisted on not allowing this to happen to you. every move she made was plastered online and analysed to no end, and with that came walls and boundaries that she put up - and an even fiercer protectiveness over her loved ones. you particularly.
you had known this from the get go, and you knew more than anything that she loved you. but there were moments where your resolve cracked, and insecurities slipped through your one innocent, almost naive bubble of love.
as the final whistle blew, signifying a well earned arsenal win, you hung back - allowing the crowds around you to eventually disperse, with their signs begging for katie’s attention trailing by their feet, before finding your way to her, a well practiced routine that now didn’t even need to be said.
you hated that you felt envious of the fans around you, able to literally plaster their love for the girl, your girl, for everyone to see, without even an ounce of hesitation.
your usual car ride was oddly quiet on the way home, with you lost in your own thoughts and your girlfriend still winding down from the adrenaline rush of the game, and quickly sensing that something was up with you.
she knew that you had been struggling more and more with being almost like her little secret as time went on, and it killed her to watch you fade away before her eyes. but her desire to protect you was stronger than her ability to see just how much the tiniest action would affect you.
you knew it was playing on her mind too as she slipped her hand into yours when you were walking from the car up to her house. a short lived moment of happiness and almost relief, that you cut short when you noticed her head constantly turning - making sure nobody was watching, even in the darkness of the night enveloping you.
tears formed in your eyes at a speed in any other moment you would find embarrassing, as you dropped her hand and rushed ahead, ignoring her calls of your name trailing behind you.
and in an instant, her house, your usual refuge from the prying eyes of the outside world, turned from an escape to the place you were trying to hide from as you entered it, with katie not even a step behind you.
“baby please. talk to me.” her voice made you shiver, her being much closer to you than you had realised, and the scratch of her accent almost made you crumble entirely. it didn’t - but it did force your sudden guard down slightly, and allowed her to guide you towards the sofa with a hand on your back.
you sank into the plush of the cushions pathetically, a perfect match to the way you threw your head in your hands a second later. your thoughts were racing around your mind, and not showing signs of letting up for even a second. you’d gone from having one moment of vulnerability at a game to being convinced that your world was ending.
that you weren’t worth it, you never had been - and that she was going to leave you.
“sweetheart, look at me.” katie almost begged, now on her knees crouched on the floor in front of you, looking the most concerned you’d ever seen her, which made you feel beyond stupid.
you knew she loved you. any idiot could look at her now, notice the look in her eyes as she took in you and know that she loved you more than anything. so why was it so hard for you to see that?
why could you not just appreciate what you had and be happy?
any one of those fans sat around you tonight would kill to be you if they knew. and yet you’re near crying and refusing to look at her.
“it’s silly, i’m sorry, you had such a good game i shouldn’t be ruining it.” your words were no more than a mumble, spoken into the palms of your hands.
“no it’s not. nothing you feel is ever silly, i promise. talk to me.” she clasped your hands in hers, causing the now slowing tears to kick start again.
“i just- i’m just so tired of not being able to show the world how much i love you. i don’t want to be a secret anymore, all of the hiding is suffocating me and i don’t want that. i don’t want us to deny ourselves the chance to be truly happy. so many couples are out freely, why can’t we be like that? am i not enough? or do you not want to be with me? i- i just can’t do it anymore. i’m so sorry, katie.”
you closed your eyes when your ramblings trailed off into sniffles, not wanting to witness her reaction. she wanted this to be a secret - she was dead set on it. you weren’t prepared for this life. you didn’t know what it was like. all you thought would come from this conversation was her leaving you.
that surely was the only outcome here.
she didn’t reply for a few seconds. seconds that felt like hours as an unnerving, almost cold silence fell between the short distance between you.
“look at me.”
and for the first time since your emotions had taken over you - you made eye contact with her, staring into her eyes that you were convinced contained some kind of magic, holding the ability to completely bring down your walls just from a glance, every time.
“okay.” she spoke, so softly that you were almost convinced you’d misheard.
“okay what?” you looked at her, confusion visibly plastered all her your face - that in any other circumstance would’ve had her laughing and teasing you.
“we can do this.” her voice was so soft, so vulnerable that it made guilt seep into your veins.
“really, i don’t want you to feel forced i understand you don’t want-”
“baby. no. i want more than anything to show the world how much i love you. i just want to protect you from all of the negativity out there, but the last thing i wanted to do was push you away. if you’re ready, then so am i, kay?” she cut you off before you’d even had a chance to let your insecurities consume any more of you.
“and you are my absolute world. i’m sorry i let you doubt that for even a second. i love you so much it physically hurts - everything i do is for you, and i’m so beyond lucky to have you.”
and with her words, your tears returned once more - but instead for a completely different cause.
her lips were on yours in an instant, joining in a kiss that whilst mixed with salty tears - said everything that months worth of words could never.
you settled instantly in her arms, letting her hold you and literally kiss all of your troubles away.
-
“i’m gonna have to start training more then i guess!” she broke the first peaceful, happy silence of the evening abruptly, and confusing you even more than she had before at the randomness of her words.
“wait what? why?”
“because you are all mine. and look at ye! i’m going to have to fight off my competition now they’re going to know who you are!”
“there’s no competition, never has been.”
-
this is not proof read and is most likely the worst thing i’ve ever written but i was determined to actually get it out of my drafts

DVD x Reader
Summary: Daan sort of terrifies you, eventually you learn you had no reason to be scared.
Warnings: Swearing, gay panic, minor crisis No hate to Ellie and Daan’s current relationship or either of them I adore them!!!, overthinking (sort of?), reader and Daan being oblivious, use of Y/N.
********
You and Danielle had been teammates for the past 3 months. You however wouldn't consider yourselves friends.
You don't know why, you don't know when, but you just automatically assumed Danielle hated you. Maybe it was the way she'd have an unreadable expression on her face when you'd speak French to your other teammates. Or the way she'd absolutely show no mercy during matches or training.
The amount of times you had been on the receiving end of an angry Danielle Van De Donk in training, well... you had lost count, you just knew they hurt.
Today was a team bonding day at Ada's house, nothing too serious, just you and all the girls from Lyon sat around playing fifa and being competitive little shits.
However, it was just your luck you arrived late. And that the only available seat was the one next to the woman you swore hated you.
But you took it, despite being shit scared of her.
Everything was going well, you didn't necessarily speak to each other that much, only exchanging one word at a time. The dutch woman clearly not up for conversation, with you at least. But she was certainly up for it with the blonde on the other side of her, Ellie Carpenter.
You don't know why on Earth it bothered you so much. The way Ellie looked at Danielle with a lovesick expression, the way she'd laugh a tad too hard at her jokes, the way she'd hang off her every word. It annoyed you to no end, and you didn't know why. Which only made you more annoyed.
Which then led to you heading into Ada's kitchen, trying to not throw the glass you were pouring wine into at the wall out of frustration.
Why the hell was this bothering you so much? You were terrified of the woman! You had seen the way she tore her opposition apart on the pitch. You had seen the way she tackled so fiercely. You had seen the way her muscular arms flexed as she was in the gym, the way she panted after a heavy training session.
Holy shit. You were scared of her. But it was maybe possible that you like liked her too? You weren't sure, and that was a whole can of worms you had no intention of opening in the middle of Ada's fucking kitchen.
You're snapped out of your thoughts by none other than the brunette herself, looking down at you with wide, concerned eyes.
"You okay?" She asks, she was actually speaking to you.
"Yeah, just reconsidering life choices and pretending not to hate myself and the feelings I have." You chuckled awkwardly, hoping it would come off as a joke rather than you over sharing. You gulped nervously as the joke fell flat, only getting a concerned slightly judgemental look from Danielle, downing the remainder of your wine.
"Okay, Y/N, maybe you should slow down with the alcohol." She chuckled, although there was an underlying concern to her tone as she removed the wine glass from your hand gently. She offered you a bashful smile, which you returned; hoping it didn't come off as a grimace.
You stand there in not-quite-awkward but not-quite-comfortable silence for a moment, rocking back and forth on the balls of your feet.
She sniffs and wipes her nose, smiling at you awkwardly.
"So.." You say, dragging out the 'o' sound.
"So." She replies, much less dragged out than you did.
"I think I'm gonna go home." You smile awkwardly, moving to grab your bag.
She grabs your arm, turning your back around to look at her.
"I could come with you? Get a cup of coffee?" She offers, before adding to it in a nervous ramble, "If you want to that is! If not it's totally fine!" she stammers before shutting up at the sound of your laugh.
"Sure, Danielle." You replied.
“Please. Call me Daan, Y/N/N.” She smirks.
"You know," you say after a beat of silence that followed the dying down laughter, "when I first met you, I thought you were mean." You laugh, shaking your head.
Danielle looks slightly shocked, her brows furrowing before she grinned, "Well, I hope I've proved you wrong."
You laugh, nodding. "You have."
She smiles triumphantly and you go back to eating your pastries in comfortable silence.
"So, what about me made you think I was mean?" She bemusedly asked, raising an eyebrow.
You thought for a moment, before your face softened and you shrugged, "I don't actually know. I mean, your confidence and your work ethic alongside how you play on the pitch? Jesus that's fucking terrifying. But I don't know why I was scared of you off the pitch, or why I thought you were mean."
You both laugh, "Alright, anything else?" She snickers before taking a sip of coffee.
"Ah! There's also that face you make when I speak French with the others, it's like you're judging me." You laugh, you swear your abs are getting more defined with how hard you've laughed in the past 30 minutes.
"What! No! I wasn't judging you! I was jealous of you!" She laughs loudly, before your fits of giggles came to an end, "And it's incredibly attractive." She murmurs quietly, quiet enough you don't hear her.
"What?" You hum.
She sighs, "And you're so attractive when you speak French." she mutters, cursing slightly as heat rises to her cheeks.
"You... You think I'm attractive?" You grin as she nods, using your index and thumb to pull her head up, making her look at you. "If it helps I think you're pretty fit too." You laugh softly as her eyes light up.
"Y/N?" She asks quietly.
"Yeah, Daan?" You ask, your breath hitching as she leaned in.
"I like you." She admits.
"I like you too."
Silence, but only for a moment.
She leans in, her lips moving against yours, almost as if they were a perfect fit against your own. Well, at least she didn't hate you.
******
A/N: hi! sorry for not posting much, but here’s something while i write up some part 2’s (and 3’s!) of stuff :)

You'll Bounce Back (Caitlin Foord x Steph Catley x Reader)
*In the spirit of the world cup and because I felt like it, this immediately came to mind*
Slight adulty warning*
Despite your best efforts, watching your team crumple against Nigeria wasn't the easiest thing to do. Considering you were currently on the sidelines watching on as Caitlin so desperately tried to push for every last chance to score, you knew she wouldn't take it well. She played her best out there, and all you could do in the moment the final whistle blew, when the celebrations of the Nigerians started, was resist the urge to hang your head in disappointment.
You knew the moment you went down during the Ireland v Australia game, that this was it for your journey through the group stages, the trainers having informed you that you would need a minimum of 2 weeks or more to recover.
So, sitting on that bench beside your best friend, who no doubt was taking it just as hard (being one of the many faces of this tournament), and despite not being on the field, you stood tall and walked (hobbled) out onto the pitch, to pick up each and every one of those girls.
Steph, you knew, like Caitlin, would take it hard, but she tends to bottle the loss more, and being impromptu captain only pushed it further into the bottleneck.
So when you spotted her standing, hands on hips, head tilted downwards, you knew she needed to let it out. Both of your girls looked defeated, and you felt helpless, knowing that if you hadn't gone for that tackle, you might've been on that pitch tonight. You should've been able to make a difference.
You should've been out there.
The thought has been burned into the back of your brain since the start of warm-ups. And yet, you push it back and begin to walk to Katrina, who was making her rounds. The older woman having become something of a mentor to you and the younger girls. She hugs you, only for a second as you pat her on the back, "You did great Min', I'm so proud of you."
Mini nods at you, despite not quite being able to meet your gaze, feeling she herself had failed you. You place a reassuring hand on her shoulder, "C'mon, we've still got a chance at this. You've got this. Play it for Harps." You give her a goofy smile to pair with your words, and you see her give a little, her own lips tugging upwards. "Thanks, Rocket."
You chuckle and proceed to go around the pitch as everyone slowly returns to the change rooms, though keeping an eye on your defender and striker, watching as they interact with some family and a couple of the fans.
Steph and Caitlin eventually make their way into the corridor and down the stairs, finding you waiting for them, leant against the wall, your crutches beside you.
They both hug you, although it's brief and there's no words exchanged and you know they won't be talking for at least a couple hours, they know they did what they could, played their best game, or at least best as they could given the current team status.
It just wouldn't settle that way in their own minds.
Caitlin leans into you for a moment, pausing to allow just a moment of your warmth to envelope her and pulls away to go shower. Steph keeps hers briefer, leaving a peck to your temple as she pulls away to do the same, and you sigh softly.
You follow, and Sam's already began her post game speech, knowing all of the girls would need that leadership and guidance to begin to help them pick themselves back up.
"C'mon girls, you've done so much today. You all pushed yourselves so hard, and you all made me proud tonight, we've got one more go, Canada doesn't know what's gonna hit them, we're gonna come back, hard and strong, like we always do. You've all played your hearts out, and I'm so grateful to call you guys my mates and my family."
Sam claps her hands and gestures to the door, "Now let's get showered and get out of here, get recovered and rested, and get ready to push harder than we've ever pushed, because I will need every single one of you here, we all will."
"Yeah, Sammy!" A couple cheers come from within the group of Australians, one from Mackenzie in the back, another from yourself standing next to the door to the changeroom.
Your teammates and yourself load up onto the bus and begin the journey back to the motel. Caitlin and Steph have sat themselves in a seat towards the back, Caitlin leaning into the defender, head on her shoulder, as she contemplates her night, a frown deepset on her face.
You find yourself watching over them as you joke with some of the younger girls, despite the dead silence that would normally come with a loss, they're up and energetic, even after a long 90 minutes. Even going so far as to let out a "C'mon hops, get off the bus, everyone wants to be in bed soon!" Coming from who you found out to be Charlotte, and vowed to give her the biggest noogie of her life when you got off the crutches.
You crutch slowly up into the elevator and make your way into your room, which you shared with Katrina, the woman already having put Harper to bed now that she was staying in the team hotel.
You let out an exhausted sigh and plop onto the matress with a small thud, rubbing at your face. You hear footsteps pad over to your side of the room and sit next to you on the bed, a warm hand rubbing gently at your back.
"Thanks Min'."
Mini hums in response,
"You wanna know something Rocky'?"
You peak out up at her and give a small nod, rubbing harshly at the threatening to spill tears.
"I'm so glad you came out there today, I really needed that, I think all of the girls did. You've given them something to think about, and no doubt Sammy has as well."
You nod softly, tilting your head back to fight off crying. She pulls you into her immediately, her holding you tight as she rubs your back.
"There's nothing you could've done, darl', all you should've been doing is resting, and you're doing that."
You shake your head slightly, "I should've been out there out there with them, Mins', I should've never made that damn slide. At least then I would be out there."
"Hey Rocky', shit happens, you do what you gotta do, you throw yourself into the game, you give it your all, sometimes that means we get knocked around a little, that doesn't mean you failed us. It means you gave it your all and helped us secure a win."
Honestly, she was right, but getting that niggling feeling in the back of your head to go away was a momumental task in itself, so despite your best efforts, you only nod and pull away.
Katrina gives you a look, like she knows you don't quite believe her, but she let's it go for now. She instead nudges you and urges you to go see Caitlin and Steph, citing that they probably need to see their girl after a night like that. You perk up a little, your lips tugging up at the sides as you stand and hop over to your crutches to exit your shared and go and find Caitlin and Steph in their room.
Rapping on the door quietly, knowing the others have probably knocked out by now, you wait until you hear quiet pads on the other side.
It's Steph who opens the door, being the late sleeper of the two.
"Hey puddin'." It comes out as a soft sigh, if anything, exhaustion clear on her face, but knowing her, she was probably struggling for sleep anyways.
You shuffle into the room and pull her down into you, arms wrapped tight around her neck as she buries her face into yours.
"Hi gorgeous. I'm so proud of you for tonight. You both played so well." Steph squeezes you a little tighter at that, and you shift your arms so your hands settle on her shoulder blades to rub at her back gently as you look up at her.
You can tell she's trying to meet your eye, but it's not quite working. You knew she'd struggle to be able to let today go.
"Look at me." Your hand on her jawline tilts her head towards you, "You did everything you could, baby. You fought so hard today. You gave everything you could."
"And it still wasn't enough." Steph's head is turned to the side as she fights her own tears. "There were so many challenges that I missed that I would've gotten any other day of the week. I missed so many tack-."
You interrupt her, "Hey now, you know damn well that you couldn’t have stopped that, sometimes you don't meet tackles where you need to and that's not on you, sometimes, stuff happens, and you aren't quick enough to meet it there."
There's a soft grumble behind the two of you, the striker stirring slightly as you both turn to watch her. Steph's expression softens slightly.
"I mean, even Cait missed some stuff, doesn't mean she could do anything else about it."
She lets out a light huff, sniffles lightly as she turns back to look at you finally. Your thumb caresses her cheek and you give her soft cheeky smile. She looks down but her cheeks crease as she grins all the same, knowing she couldn’t deny you a smile if she tried. The look in her eyes has you swooning, and she leans down to take your lips with hers.
You hum softly, hand coming up to grip her neck and keep her pressed against you. Her hands find their way to your hips, gripping them and pulling you as close as possible.
You gasp into the brunette when she reaches to pull you up into her arms by the thighs, your legs wrapping around her waist, careful not to jostle your ankle too much. Steph's hand comes to settle under your shirt, her hips pressing up into yours, holding you in place.
The way she kisses away from your lips and down to your collarbone has you whining, although her hand is quick to silence you, not wanting to wake your other girlfriend who most definitely needs to sleep. She nips at the skin, grinning as you shudder softly. Her lips are hot on your collarbone, your skin radiating its own heat, and your insides buzz when she reaches to push your shirt over your head.
A whimper coming from Caitlin as she stirs makes you both pause, and you have to hold in a laugh when Steph groans and her head drops to your shoulder. You run your hands through her hair, which is let down for the night, and rub at her shoulder before she gently sets you down. You kiss her softly, getting ready to slip back out of the room.
"I'll let you sleep, sweetheart."
Steph is quick to protest, though, grabbing your hand to pull you back towards the bed. You giggle as clings to you the moment you're both settled.
Another body lands on the bed behind you and startles you slightly. Caitlin, now having fully woken to the noise, wraps herself around you sulkily. "Hey puddin'."
It comes out as more of a grunt than anything, the words pressed into the back of your neck as she leaves soft kisses on the skin there. "Hi bubs, sorry we woke you, go back to sleep." Your hand grips hers softly. She grumbles slightly, "You should've woken me sooner."
You chuckle and shift in their arms to face the striker, kissing her as soon as she's in reach. She sighs softly into your mouth, fingers tangling with Steph's as their hands rest against your side. Caitlin pulls away, and she curls her leg over yours to rest on stephs ankle, gently rubbing it.
You loved seeing them so affectionate with each other. They were best friends before they approached you when you got together, but they'd never been touchy. So seeing them that way now meant more than anything, knowing they were just as in love with each other as they were with you. It only made you smile more.
"God, I love you both so much."
"We love you too, pretty girl." Steph mumbles the words into your hair. Caitlin hums her agreement as she kisses you again.
"Now you both better sleep. We've got recovery time to make tomorrow."
They both whine at you, finally having you in their arms, and you want them to sleep. You laugh, "C'mon, now you two, you have a game to prep for, and sleep deprivation does not make that better, you guys will do better, you'll bounce back, you always do."
You were right. They always found a way to bounce back. All they had to do was play their best game.
Canada wouldn't know what hit them.
