Ain’t no flowers

Eravamo seduti ad un tavolo, a Oviedo. Il locale era una rosticceria, di quelle frequentate in pausa pranzo, da parte di impiegati e operai. Quando ci accomodammo al tavolo di legno lucido, adorno di tovagliette e posate di plastica, notai una patatina per terra. Era lì da un po’ di tempo, perché era sporca e impolverata. Alcune formiche le giravano intorno con aria circospetta. Era estate, c’erano gli insetti, le mosche, in giro, dappertutto. La gente entrava e usciva, mangiava e beveva. Era un giorno feriale, per la maggior parte delle persone presenti nel locale: mangiavano in fretta, si aggiustavano le cravatte, sorridevano l’una con l’altra. Per noi, invece, era vacanza. Un giro della Penisola Iberica a bordo di una Jetta. Non vi era musica, nell’aria: i rumori dall’esterno entravano prepotentemente nel bacalino e, in modo graduale, cominciavano a far parte delle conversazioni dei presenti. Che sembravano intontiti dalla loro routine, anestetizzati nelle loro pause pranzo asturiane. La patatina fritta, che fritta non lo era più da epoche, giaceva inerme, ed era diventata quasi marrone. La disprezzavo. Avevamo passato la mattina a visitare la città e avevo fame, ma quella presenza mi inquietava. Chi l’aveva lasciata cadere, prestando poca attenzione al desco al quale si trovava ed alle sue misure, alla sua larghezza? E perché, soprattutto, non l’aveva raccolta, lasciando in tal modo l’incombenza a un futuro avventore o, come più naturale che fosse, a un addetto alle pulizie della rosticceria? Se la stava portando alla bocca per poterla masticare oppure era sfuggita essa stessa dal suo cartoccio, rotolando prima sui pantaloni del distratto cliente e poi finendo a terra? Era ben salata? “Quello che importa, è quello che c’è sul tavolo”, mi spronò mia madre, accigliata. Voleva che iniziassi a sbranare come un grizzly di Glacier Park il mio pesce, costato poche pesetas. Ma non ci riuscivo, non riuscivo a mangiare sapendo che ci fosse quella patatina sul pavimento, tra le nostre scarpe da ginnastica che avevano già camminato molto, per i Paesi Baschi, per le Asturie e per Madrid, città natale di Rafael Benitez, l’allenatore che diede fiducia ad un terzino sinistro norvegese di nome John Arne Riise sin da quando arrivò, nel 2004, come allenatore al Liverpool. Non che i rapporti tra i due furono sempre cordiali, anzi. Coniugare un ferreo castigliano con uno scandinavo rosso. Nel Merseyside, poi. Impresa quanto mai rischiosa. Eppure, i due, concentrandosi sull’importanza di quel ruolo per affrontare le squadre europee più forti, tralasciando possibili dissapori e incongruenze, ci riuscirono. Quello che importava, era quello che c’era sul tavolo, non per terra. Non riuscii a toccare cibo per una buona decina di minuti, da quando praticamente mi arrivò sul tavolo.

Era del pesce proveniente dall’Oceano Atlantico, contornato da verdure e salse. I miei pensieri erano rivolti alla sporcizia, alla neglettitudine di quel posto, più infame di una baracca nonostante fosse dislocato nel centro storico di una città bellissima che mi ricordava l’Europa dell’est. Acquisti del venerdì mattina, a caso. Persone che affollano i centri delle città e dei paesi, vagando alla ricerca di qualcosa da comprare. Viso aperto, fronte alta. I giorni di sosta, per loro, sono già incominciati. Nei paesi, il fenomeno è ancora più tangibile. Le commesse di un negozio di vestiti si lamentano perché, tutto d’un tratto, la radio, che diffonde musica nei locali del negozio, tenuta a volume altissimo per contrastare i rumori dei clienti, si spegne, senza più riaccendersi. Vengono così costrette ad ascoltare cose succede all’interno del loro posto di lavoro. Mormorii, gente che si chiama, bambini che si lamentano, stampelle di metallo lasciate cadere rovinosamente sul linoleum, borse che vengono appoggiate con vigore alle sedie dei camerini, luci che traballano, in quella corsa agli acquisti del venerdì. Il rendersi conto di questa mancanza le rende nervose, come se avessero preso coscienza del fatto di dover lavorare mentre altra gente, quasi svogliatamente, sfruttava il proprio tempo libero comprando oggetti, beni. Dover lavorare per altri esseri umani. Nella finale di Istanbul, il madrileno sposta Thunderbolt in avanti, sulla linea dei suoi centrocampisti più fidati, quelli voluti da lui, in persona, per poter riportare grande Liverpool partendo dalla costruzione del gioco. Si chiamano Luis García e Xabi Alonso e sono, rispettivamente, catalano e basco: non propriamente i classici gonzi castigliani che potevano far gola a Rafa, quindi. Tra lui e i due iberici c’è, ovviamente, Gerrard, capace di riunificare sotto un’unica egida terzini, esterni e mediani vecchia scuola. Il Liverpool di quell’annata è tutto qui. Dietro di lui, poi, gioca un altro terzino, che ora fa l’allenatore dei rossi e amanti della musica grunge Sounders. Djimi Traorè. Questo esperimento, all’inizio, però, non funziona. Kewell e Baros sono troppo leggeri e lo stesso Riise sembra aver paura. Sta facendo l’ala, non il terzino. Cafu non è un ospite da trattare a cuor leggero e passa sempre da lì, da lui, da quella parte. Ha paura anche se la sua squadra si trova sotto di tre gol e crossa da lontano, da un recupero, il lancio non è nemmeno molto teso.

Il terzino destro brasiliano stavolta è fermo. Dida guarda il pallone, non sembra nemmeno sforzarsi più di tanto, per raccogliere quel colpo di testa a spiovere del capitano. Da quel cross, nato da un pallone raccattato per caso, prese vita una delle più famose rimonte della storia dello sport. Perché l’importante è crossare, come il considerare solo ciò che rimane sul tavolo, da mangiare, senza curarsi di ciò che sia avvenuto prima.
