Review: Ancient North – The Gates (Iron Bonehead)
My review of Ancient North's The Gates, written for Heavy Music HQ:
Tumblr media
Paying homage to all the classic elements of black metal, Ancient North have stepped onto the American underground black metal scene to eloquently recall the roots of black metal of the ‘90s. Both in terms of sound and appearance, Ancient North have followed black metal’s common stereotypes so enthusiastically that it is as if their first album The Gates was forgotten somewhere in the mid-‘90s and has now been unearthed.
With an album cover that is heavily reminiscent of Gorgoroth’s Antichrist and the music which is strongly influenced by early Gorgoroth, Mayhem and Darkthrone, The Gates is a thoroughly old-school black metal affair. The production has put the sound of the instruments and the atmosphere in a cold, semi-raw state so that the listener is not separated from the mood of the Scandinavian, mostly Norwegian black metal of the ‘90s. Keeping black metal’s stereotypes alive, The Gates can be an admirable work for the young generation that has just discovered black metal and has not delved deeply into its classic albums yet.
Rating: 3/5

hi hello 👀🖤. dropping by to ask if you have any metal songs that you associate with our boy mickey. i'm partial to fuel and nothing else matters by metallica because i've used them as fic inspo, but the unforgiven also reminds me of him 😌🖤
🖤 VICKS. Omg. Yes. Hello. I do. Some of these are headcanons but I can't hear these songs without thinking of Mickey anymore.
Admission by Torche gives me heartbroken Mickey feels. I really can't listen to this song without thinking of him. (listen to this song listen to this song.)
I always pictured his brothers and/or cousins being into black metal and Mickey getting into it too when he was really young, like that just feels so real, but then he eventually leaned away from it as he got older and didn't want to listen to a bunch of nazi/nazi-adjacent bands. However, he keeps Darkthrone because they're fun as hell and truly harmless, and he's fascinated by Gaahl because he's amazed that someone so scary and badass could also be gay. I know I didn't mention specific songs with this one, I'm sorry!
Turbo Lover by Judas Priest lmao. Listen, we know Mickey appreciates the cheesier stuff (livin on a prayer hello hello anybody) but Judas Priest is badass and this song is gay as hell, of course he would love this and of course I would associate it with him.
Ohhh Red Fang. I just feel like he'd really like them. And I do specifically associate the song Wires with him, which is their most popular single, I think. I picture him getting baked and laughing his ass off at their music videos and Ian having to beg him not to buy a katana after watching Arrows. Sludgier Red Fang songs are featured on the wake and bake playlist he definitely has, but the playlist kicks off with God Luck and Good Speed by Weedeater, and also features some songs by Sleep that drive Ian fucking bonkers until he eventually gives in and realizes he's kinda into it.
So, that's a couple songs I specifically associate with him, plus some headcanons for ya. And there are more but I don't want to inundate you because you did not ask for this lol. I think I've shared some of these before, like a long time ago maybe? but the association with Torche is new and my thoughts about Mickey & black metal haven't been shared before I don't think.

Like so many of his peers, Satyr was now utterly bewitched by the black metal phenomenon that was exploding within the country and quickly began connecting to the movement, both musically and socially. A good four-to-seven years younger than the ‘first generation’ black metal musicians of Norway, his introduction to the scene had come – as with so many of his peers – as a young customer at the legendary Helvete store. “Probably the first guy that I would speak to in that scene would be Euronymous,” Satyr confirms. “That was as a customer buying demo cassettes and the odd t-shirt. He’d be the guy sitting behind the counter and I talked to him about music like you would in any record store, though there was nothing ordinary about that record store and nothing ordinary about that guy. He was very theatrical and dramatic when he explained something and that was interesting and fun to encounter. It wasn’t like, ‘Oh yeah we have this demo, it’s really interesting, you should check it out’. It was like, ‘Oh yeah, this band are dark, evil Satanists and they have made something which is a maelstrom of evil, this could accompany any ritual you want’,” he laughs. “So it made it very intriguing and exciting. I mean he was a few years older, so that made an impression on me and the whole visual imagery was so hardcore.” “There weren’t really office hours at the shop,” he continues, “they had opening hours but it was pretty much open when it was ready to open and closed when it was ready to close. It was not just a record store but a society really - there were people living in the back office and the basement and people hanging out in the room behind the merchandise - and I later became one of those guys myself. But you would see Euronymous working on his music or his mail order and then people like Hellhammer and Faust would look after the store. I gradually befriended them and then in the fall of ‘92 I got to know [Darkthrone’s] Fenriz.“

Spring Has Sprung - Skegss
Skegss are one of the best artist to listen to while drunk, they have the perfect sound and lyrics to belt out when you've had a couple brewskis. Spring Has Sprung is my personal favourite song by them though, the whole song's about MDMA and the feelings it gives you. The songs vibes are immaculate, it perfectly gives off a warm/nostalgic feeling and it'll never fail to set the mood for a party.
Who Killed Marilyn? - Misfits
Misfits are one of my all time favourite bands, idk why though. It's one of those things that I just can't put into words, anyway Who Killed Marilyn is one of the best songs to listen to when you wanna get a feel for their vibe. The song has all the main things most Misfits songs have such as abrasive/controversial lyrics among other things.
Golden Eye - Action Bronson
Action Bronson, Young Baklava, Bam Bam, or any other name this legend wants to go as, knows how to perfectly massage anyones eardrums. The only reason I picked this song is because it's the first one that came to my head, to be honest he has to many songs I love to be able to just pick one. Golden Eye has anything and everything you'd want from an Action Bronson song.
SOURPATCHPUSSY - Gizmo
yeah... I don't know what to say about this one, I'm just writing whatever song pops into my head, I mean I like this song but it wouldn't be a top 10
usedcar - surrenderdorothy
surrenderdorothy aka BONES and Greaf's side project. the opening lyrics are " I were a used car, I wouldn't go far I would just break down and smoke" and I've NEVER related to a lyric as much in my life before
I Been Tryna Get Clean - Slug Christ
I've never listen to or heard a song that has as much emotion as this one. So far in my life I've never lost a loved one and this song makes me scared for the day it happens. The vocals of this song hold so much weight to it, you can literally hear his voice shaking from a mix of getting off H and the loss of what I assume to be his mother.
Kathaarian Life Code - DarkThrone
This is essential listening material if you're a fan of black metal or if you're trying to get into the genre. it's 10 minutes of pure unadulterated black metal from what's considered one of the best black metal albums of all times.
See You Later, I'm Gone - Robert Lester Folsom
I mean the name of the album this song comes from really says it all 'ode to a rainy day'. If the word melancholy was a song it would be this osng
Báthory Erzsébet - Sunn 0)))
A song has never made me scared to leave my room until I heard this song on full blast at 3 in the morning. There's just something about the muffled screams and the heavy breathing from the claustrophobic vocalist locked in a coffin that give off a dark and eerie vibe. I mean it doesn't help that it's mixed with the typical low droning guitar that Sunn 0))) are known for

Note
Having been in a band for 10+ years, are you conscious of becoming stale or formulaic? It seems like lots most bands create a couple of records that are innovative and successfull, and then when they have built up a fanbase keep releasing records that, although excellent, are very recognisable. From a laymans perspective I think that is kind of an interesting dichotomy. By the way, let me by you a beer when you make it to Oslo this autumn (you don’t have to drink it with me)
Jaki Liebezeit of Can once said that rock bands shouldn’t last longer than the lifespan of the average family dog. In general, I think it’s a good rule... not because I think there’s a time limit to how long a band can remain valid and exciting, but because it seems like so many musicians stop growing and learning and listening at a certain point in their adult lives. Young musicians are curious, hungry, and excited. Old musicians are more prone to being bored and jaded.
I am certainly aware of the creative challenges that come with being in a band that’s 17 years old and has 7 albums under our belts. And while part of me thinks it’d be exciting to throw everyone a curveball and put out some wildly different-sounding LP, I’m more concerned with just making a record that sounds good to all of our ears. We’re three different people with three different personal tastes, and our collective sound tends to be the nexus of our interests. On the one hand, I think we’ve put ourselves in a good place where we can write something that sounds like “Memorial,” or “Philos,” or “309,” or “Death Rides a Horse,” or “Mota,” and they all sound different but all make sense in our canon. On the other hand, I don’t ever see us venturing outside the guitar/drums/bass instrumental world. So folks shouldn’t expect any radical departures.
And ya know... I didn’t have an issue with Lungfish or Shellac or Sonic Youth or Yo La Tengo or Darkthrone working within their parameters over the course of multiple decades because even if you sorta knew what you were gonna get with a new album, you knew it was gonna be good. And a big part of that was because the personnel involved still seemed engaged in what was going on around them as opposed to merely going through the motions.
