Elrond and Celebrimbor visit Moria
This snippet is from a story where Elrond and Celebrimbor solve crimes in Khazad-dum. They haven't got to the detective bit yet, they are touristing it up visiting the Mines.
Clearly, Celebrimbor was honoured among the miners, for there was much enthusiastic nodding of heads and wagging of beards at his appearance, and shortly afterwards, he was presented with a pick, and took a cautious swing at the rock-face.  There was a hole about three feet tall, with a small stream running into it, and Elrond wondered if there was a special word in the language of Dwarves for such an opening.
Narvi appeared at Elrond’s elbow. “They are almost ready.  I hoped we would get here in time.”
“In time?”
“They are opening up a new shaft, very shortly.” Narvi folded a leathery calloused hand around one of Elrond’s hands and led him back towards the corridor they had entered by. “Let’s wait over here, we should be able to see everything, and be well out of the way.”
From a door in the wall that was nearly invisible until it was opened, Narvi produced a number of worn and durable-looking helmets, leather-lined and iron-bound. “Pop this on, there’s a good lad, Elrond.  Just in case of stray pebbles, you understand. This will be a little on the large side for you, I think, but better safe than sorry.”
Elrond balanced the helmet on his head, just as Celebrimbor came over to them, donning a helmet of his own.  “This,” he said. “This should be worth seeing.”
And yet for some time, there was nothing much to see. Dwarves moved around purposefully, shinning up ladders,  gathering the lanterns that lit the cave together near the wall where Elrond was watching.
Then he noticed that, one by one, the lamps were being put out. The shadows grew, and the light dwindled.
Narvi said in a half-whisper to both Celebrimbor and Elrond.  “First, we let the darkness under the mountain return. Remembering what the Maker set below Zirakzigil, before light and sound.”
The last lamp died, and the darkness leaped up to fill the cavern, blacker than any night under cloud or star.  Elrond could hear the sound of the Dwarves breathing, quietly in the great darkness, and as his senses reached out to make up for the lack of light, he began to hear other noises too: the faint trickle of water, and then, beyond that, the deep distant sound of the heart of rock. Zirakzigil itself, the Great South-Mountain of Khazad-dûm,  singing a song almost beyond hearing.
He could feel the great weight of it above him, and yet, it was not oppressive, as he had feared it might as the light vanished. It was more like a vast warmth, a kindly unspeaking presence so vast that small cares were lost in it.
“And now the coming of the light,” Narvi said. It sounded like a ritual, words smoothed by time and habit.
High above, from some hidden door that had previously been invisible, a bright beam of light poured into the cavern.  It was brilliant against the darkness, and yet it illuminated nothing but the small area where the Dwarves had been working.
Brighter, brighter it shone, until Elrond could feel the heat beating off the stone that it lit up. There was a faint rumbling in the air, growing louder, and three dwarves leaped to a stone shute, and flung the stone door open.
A great gout of water shot out, foaming white, and hit the wall just at the bright spot. The brilliance of the white water was almost blinding after the darkness. There was a great crack, and a huge section of the cavern wall buckled and fell into shards, opening up a wide dark space, through which the water roared, foaming and steaming in the brilliant beam of light.
Celebrimbor picked up a lamp, and lit it, smiling, as the beam of light from above faded. Around him, Dwarves were carrying lanterns and moving them back to illuminate the new space. “The People of Durin work on the large scale,” he said, and smiled. “They certainly do!  What was that light and heat? Have you tamed a dragon, Narvi?”
Narvi laughed. “Now, I have never thought of a dragon as something that would come in handy in a mine before!  But no, it’s more manageable than a dragon, thanks be! The Eye of ZirakZigil, we call it, and it took a good deal of building.”

Irish Sludgers COROZA Unleash “Scorched Earth”
~Doomed & Stoned~
By Billy Goate
Tumblr media
Some years back, we introduced you to progressive sludge foursome COROZA from Cork, Ireland. Tom Hanno wrote an excellent review of their debut LP, 'Challiceburner' (2019), in which he lauded the band for their "heavy, heavy riffing and huge tone." The band also contributed a track to our compilation Doomed & Stoned in Ireland before the pandemic. In the years since, Coroza has earned a reputation as a firebrand live act.
Today, Doomed & Stoned brings you brand new material from Coroza with the single "Scorched Earth," an apocalyptic number from their upcoming second full-length 'As Within' (2024). Here mysterious monastic singing meets deranged howls and mighty roars. Riffs are nothing short of crushing, the rhythm section a windstorm. You'll certainly want to listen with a good pair of speakers or headphones for full effect.
The nine-minute monolith seems to me like the ebb and flow of crashing tidal waves in the Celtic Sea. There is something both beautiful and chaotic afoot, and one can picture a great asteroid of impending doom not far from view. Perhaps we will self-destruct beforehand in our own man-made funeralopolis. Let Coroza take you for a ride to the End of Days.
Coroza's As Within releases May 20th on vinyl, CD, cassette, and digital formats via Cursed Monk Records (pre-order here). Stick it on a playlist with Yob, Ahab, and Zirakzigil.

SOME BUZZ
Coroza was formed in Cork, Ireland in mid-2015 and over the course of two years honed their sound into a devastatingly heavy form, which encompasses heavy blues, metal, sludge, doom and stoner elements, leading to the release of their well-received self-titled demo in 2017.
Extensive gigging cemented them into the local scene and soon Coroza began appearing on bills around Ireland, landing support slots to international touring bands such as Conan, Bolzer and Tusker. 2019 saw the release of their debut album Chaliceburner which was met with positive reviews.

Coroza's second album titled 'As Within' (2024) was recorded and mixed by renowned producer Aidan Cunningham and mastered by Magnus Lindberg (Cult of Luna).
Coroza are:   • Ciarán Coghlan (guitar/vox)   • Jack O’Neill (lead guitar/vox)   • Ollie Cunningham (drums)   • Tomás O’Brien (bass)

'I need no map,' said Gimli, who had come up with Legolas
They're already—
and was gazing out before him with a strange light in his deep eyes.
He does have beautiful eyes doesn't he Jolkien
'There is the land where our fathers worked of old, and we have wrought the image of those mountains into many works of metal and of stone, and into many songs and tales. They stand tall in our dreams: Baraz, Zirak, Shathûr.
So is this a metaphor? Does he mean that he knows them from stories, or from literally his dreams? I think—either way it doesn't matter. This is Tolkien and there's always this lovely mysticism attached to songs and tales—I think the metaphor is also true.
Also I love Gimli a lot oh my god
Only once before have I seen them from afar in waking life, but I know them and their names, for under them lies Khazad-dûm, the Dwarrowdelf, that is now called the Black Pit, Moria in the Elvish tongue. Yonder stands Barazinbar, the Redhorn, cruel Caradhras; and beyond him are Silvertine and Cloudyhead: Celebdil the White, and Fanuidhol the Grey, that we call Zirakzigil and Bundushathûr .
all of these names are such bangers like. Ok Dungeons and Dragons tries to go for a tolkein-esque vibe with its names, but dnd names are always just. ridiculous nonsense because the dnd people're just not? as good? These names all sound real. They sound like real places in another langauge. And also they sound cool as fuck. And also Gimli I love you.

Fic: My Deep Valley 4/8, T, Erestor/Glorfindel, Elrond
My Deep ValleyChapter 4: Zirakzigil, Brothels and Soup (link goes to A03)
Elrond has found the perfect place to build his new home. He also has one of Gondolin's greatest architects at hand to build it. Now he only needs the cooperation of the local population.
Unfortunately, said population is objecting. Represented by the son of the tavern owners, they resist the architect's grand plans, and it is up to Glorfindel to convince Erestor to yield.
"This is Imladris. This is my deep valley. I will not allow this."
Beta by eveiya.
For @sortumavaara
Notes:
See chapter 1 for extensive notes.
Glorfindel introduces Erestor to the great achievements of the First Age: Dwarvish liquor, Gondothlim brothels and - soup.
This chapter had three pages, then I made up that cursed Dwarvish liquor.

The Seven Houses of the Khazad by Artigas
Stiffbeards: Renowned Craftsman, they make their homes in ice caves on the vast frozen lands up north, starting around the ice bay of Forochel and all the way down in between the mountains of Angmar and the grey mountains (Ered Mithrim). Very secretive and peaceful, they avoid taking part in any troubles from the outside world at any costs. Despite their secretive ways, they are also accomplished merchants, and regularly travel vast spans of the frozen lands to trade with many diverse cultures. The items they create from exotic materials such as Ivory and bones from sea monsters are very sought after, in particular their fabled toys. Stiffbeards are ultimately free spirits, lovers of music, stories and the tribe above everything else. Stonefoots: They are the somewhat less developed branch of Durin’s folk, widely regarded as great miners, gem cutters and delvers. They are otherwise considered by many to be quite simple-minded, stubborn and difficult to deal with, but despite that they are greatly favoured by the Longbeards, which hold them in high regard as dependable and trustworthy allies. They dwell on the southern part of the Orocani on the east side, near the pinewoods and shores of the sea of Rûn. Broadbeams: Great merchants from Zirakbhund (Mallost) and later Mount Dolmed in the Ered Luin, they were Founders of the great city of Belegost (Gabilgathol). The Broadbeams are well known for their wealth, their prosperity, and the formidable fortresses they have built. They are also widely respected for their military might, and in particular for their legendary Dragon-Warriors. They are also considered the greatest armourers the dwarves had ever produced and were the creators of the fearsome Dwarf-Masks. Most prominent among the Broadbeams was King Azaghâl who wounded Glaurung the Dragon, and whose Dragon-helm was later passed down to Turin Turambar as part of his family heirloom. Longbeards: Noble and wise rulers, originally from the northern part of misty mountains on Mt. Gundabad (under which Durin himself is said to have awaken) and later on its southern ranges where they founded the great city of Khazad-dum, dug under the three peaks- Barazinbar, Zirakzigil and Bundushathûr. Regal, prosperous and traditionalist, they are the righteous heirs of Durin I The Deathless, and are therefore the supreme rulers of the dwarf kind. The Longbeards are held as a divine and sacred lineage by the other clans and command great power. Firebeards: Hot-headed, warlike and tough, Firebeards came from Nogrod (Tumunzahar) in the Blue Mountains. Supreme metalworkers, they are said to have invented maille. They are also hailed as the greatest Blade-smiths among Dwarves, and naturally many of the best came from their ranks, such as:  Gamil Zirak (said to be the greatest of all times, maker of the knife Angrist, the sword Andúril and the Dragon-Helm of Dor-Lómin), as well as the legendary Dwarf-smiths Telchar and Garmur. They befriended the elves with whom they traded profusely, and were commissioned by King Thingol of Doriath to delve Menegroth as well as to create treasuries and weapons for him. The necklace Nauglamír was their greatest creation for the King, and the cause of equally great woe. Ironfists: Proud, strong and fierce, the Ironfists are renowned for their formidable warriors of noble descent and their military might. Hailing from far up north on the Orocani mountains and near the gulf left by the now extinct sea of Helcar, they are said to be the first to unveil the secrets of Iron and Steel, which they brought to Durin as their gift when they answered to his call. They are a very warlike and greedy people though, and are accounted to have been involved in many shameful minor wars against other clans, particularly with the Firebeards, to whom they bear a grudge and consider to be their rivals. It is also with great difficulty that they accept to be ruled over by the Longbeards, and despite recognizing their authority as rightful rulers of the dwarfkind, they take every opportunity they can to act independently. Blacklocks: Great architects and Jewell makers that made their homes in the Mountains of Shadow’s far eastern side (Ered Glamhoth), among the remnants of Hildórien in the arid lands scorched by the never-ending sun. They were the first to develop civilization and are prodigiously rich and unbelievably proud. The Blacklocks are very famous for their wealth and they guard it with extreme avarice. They are also accused of being the “black sheep” of Durin’s folk and of being greedy and selfish, as well as of worse things such as dealing with orcs and perhaps even Mordor. Unfortunately, many times those accusations bear more than a hint of truth.

January 25
Gandalf casts down the Balrog, and passes away. His body lies on the peak.
‘There upon Celebdil was a lonely window in the snow, and before it lay a narrow space, a dizzy eyrie above the mists of the world. The sun shone fiercely there, but all below was wrapped in cloud. Out he sprang, and even as I came behind, he burst into new flame. There was none to see, or perhaps in after ages songs would still be sung of the Battle of the Peak.’ Suddenly Gandalf laughed. ‘But what would they say in song? Those that looked up from afar thought that the mountain was crowned with storm. Thunder they heard, and lightning, they said, smote upon Celebdil, and leaped back broken into tongues of fire. Is that not enough? A great smoke rose about us, vapour and steam. Ice fell like rain. I threw down my enemy, and he fell from the high place and broke the mountain-side where he smote it in his ruin. Then darkness took me, and I strayed out of thought and time, and I wandered far on roads that I will not tell.’

Wyoming Young and Strong Return with Another Pacific Northwest Gem
~Doomed & Stoned Debuts~
By Billy Goate
Tumblr media
I've had my earphones filled with the sounds WYOMING YOUNG AND STRONG this week. The Seattle trio generates a brooding atmosphere on the order of Black Tusk and Kylesa, and similarly shout their lyrics (often in unison). There's something quite fierce, and even a bit joyful, about such a presentation. There are, after all, fantastic tales to be told!
Today, Doomed & Stoned is giving you a first-listen to Wyoming Young & Strong's spirited new single, "Tursulas," from the upcoming concept album, 'Wicked Upon You' (2023). The band has created a whole lore about this song:
"Tursulas" is the first song we wrote and recorded as a three piece. We’re really happy with how much more we can do with as a three piece. This song finds Wyoming right after the Winter War. He’s signed on to a ballista team, on the repurposed war ship that is to return the Tappurien Witches to their home. The Witches had been hired to support his side in the war but alas, even with their help the cause was hopeless.
After days at sea the crew encounters a monstrosity known as the Tursalas. The Tursalas is a tentacled horror that dwarfs the warship. They try in vain to escape but the ship is lost. Wyoming is thrown overboard but the witches manage to open some kind of magical portal, much like the portal that rescued him while he was floating in space after escaping the Shaman of Deimos. They seem to escape through it with a few of his fellow crew members. The song ends with Wyoming adrift and alone.
As the song opens, we are greeted by angsty arpeggios that finally erupt in a full-out riot. Strong bass tones, doomy guitar chords, and furious drumming both ground us and rock our world during the stormy five-and-a-half minute ride. The band crafts episodic moments that stimulate the imagination of the listener, inviting us to wonder. The recording falls easy on the ears, with all the instruments given realistic presence.
Look for Wyoming Young & Strong's Wicked Upon You, the band's second full-length album, on February 9th (pre-order here). Stick it on a playlist with early-Mastodon, Big Business, and Zirakzigil.

Wicked Upon You by Wyoming Young and Strong
SOME BUZZ
'Wicked Upon You,' Wyoming Young & Strong’s latest release, continues to tell the tale of our fabled hero Wyoming, a man who has journeyed across time and space after being forcibly and unwittingly transported to an unforgiving future. Wyoming has overcome challenges and grown through his adventures, learning about the evolution of humankind and his own magical lineage. His current path ties to his past, as his past ties to his future.
This release finds Wyoming in the midst of realization. Following the events chronicled on the previous Bend the Night 7-inch release, he has been a part of losing battle in the Winter War and is now tasked with returning the witches of Tappurien to their home. En route, their ship is attacked and destroyed by an ancient, gargantuan beast known as the Tursulas.
After floating at sea for days on the wreckage he is captured by the Grey Blade. This horrific submersible also holds other enslaved victims of the gods, and one regales him with the tale of Burned Path, outlining how his world has fallen and why Wyoming must find a way through this new hellish landscape of destruction.
Tumblr media
The Grey Blade then delivers him to an old enemy of humankind that can best be described as an omniscient celestial. This being is all powerful, but yet still derives pleasure from tormenting humans. In the final saga Space Wizard, we hear about one of the mighty but delusional Magi that Wyoming previously met. His recollection of this event helps him understand more about how the Magi can at times falter, and what they must do for humankind to ascend.
Wyoming Young and Strong has been singing folk songs dedicated to this epic hero since their inception. Josh, Jason, and Josh have arranged these songs in the tradition of bass, drums, guitar, and vocals. Just like the Triad of the Vision before them, they wind the tales of Wyoming through the lens of stoner and noise rock. Taking inspiration from the Melvins, Shellac and Sleep.

Random takes on ahsoka ep 5
Okay actually spoilers this time
Thesis statement: Ep5 was absolutely ridiculous and I loved every second of it
For those wondering what it would look like if the peak of Zirakzigil and King’s Cross smashed into each other at a thousand miles an hour…
YASSSSS THIS IS THE ANGST CONTENT I SPECIFICALLY REQUESTED. I’m not even gonna think about it for a minute just gonna sit here and wallow
Ohhhh he’s got the early season CW armor on he’s just a little guy <3
[Referring to the Teensoka section] Man I was emotionally prepared to hate whatever this was gonna be but I really liked it. Like, multiple different character beats that all hit really well. Nice job guys.
When you’re 45 and just learning what intergenerational trauma is. Better late than never
Why is S7 Teensoka so short. I just think Ahsoka from ~S7 onward should be freakishly tall and yes I know Rosario Dawson isn’t super tall but let me have this
I guess there’s an argument to be made that all Ahsoka character beats get executed multiple times (lookin’ at you, Vader reveal) but guys. Guyyyyyyyys. How many times can she go swimming and then return as Gandalf the Orange because I’m counting three now (I feel like world between worlds and rebels finale are separate level-ups, but if you see them as one beat I’d throw Mortis into the mix). Admittedly part of that might be that I’ve been taking post-Rebels S2 Sith Temple Baptism as canon and I guess not everyone watching this show became completely feral in May 2016
This is totally unrelated but omigod those were Topps cards? The makers of Dinosaurs Attack? Universes are colliding for me rn
Huh we’ve never seen how her face and her montrals meet up before. And… I’m not sure I like it. Put the headband back on
Yeah I know we all knew the white robe was coming but Dave. Dave this is a lot. Like she has white gloves now? And white boots?? ([Channels Bojack Horseman] Do you get it? Do you get my joke?)
Also possibly unpopular opinion but I’m just sayin’ white isn’t her color. The combo with her montrals just makes her look washed out.
Alternative hypothesis: the white clothing is the spare outfit she hates but hasn’t gotten around to getting rid of yet and the grays are coming back as soon as they’re out of the drier
Alternative alternative hypothesis: Seatos’ ocean is 0.1% bleach.
Oh sweet baby Space Jesus she can do psychometry now. She hit level 20 at Malachor and just kept taking levels anyway. My blorbo is op and I can’t even be mad
I’m not even gonna touch “surviving without oxygen for several hours without even intentionally meditating”
Suddenly realized we’re more than halfway thru this show and we haven’t seen Thrawn and we still don’t have any substantial information about the Dark Jedi so like… who is the villain? Is it intergenerational trauma? Please tell me it’s intergenerational trauma
Why do space whales have baleen? Oh to filter feed on midichlorians. Never mind I retract my question
Aaaand Filoni just hit “Jonah” on his Biblical Hero Dartboard
So you wasted billions of dollars on this technology when you could have just asked a whale nicely? How embarrassing.
Come to think of it tho why didn’t Ezra just take a whale BACK? Then again if I start thinking too much about this it’s just gonna devolve into “How Rebels Should Have Ended”
