Chapter 52: Up All Night

I awoke in the middle of the night, deep in sweat. I couldn’t remember my dream, but I didn’t want to. It was a horrible nightmare, but one of those that you forget as soon as you wake up. I took a deep breath, and noticed Tom still asleep. I smiled and quietly got up and tip toed my way outside. I sat down on one of the rocking chairs that we had outside, and I took out a cigarette from its pack and lit one up. I took a long drag from it, and exhaled the smoke. I thought to myself for a while. A lot of things in my life were fucked up in my life. Everything that got ruined was because of me. I fucked up my relationship with Mark by falling for his best friend, I ruined my relationship with Tom because I tried to end things and was seeing someone else, I ruined my band by doing drugs with Amber, I ruined our tour schedule because the manager hit on me, and I ruined marriages and relationships. I was a horrible person. How could I change so much and ruin everything in the short amount of time I’ve been with these guys? I’m such an awful person. I sat in the chair hugging my legs and rocking back and forth. I needed to change. I couldn’t have everything in the world to myself. I couldn’t be selfish. I needed to decide on what I should do. I needed to choose one guy, I needed to make better contributions to my band, I needed to be more honest with others, and I needed to stop hurting other people. I felt tears build up in my eyes, but I fought to hold them back. I needed to be strong and independent. I had to stop hurting the people around me because it was ruining everything. “What are you doing up?” I heard a tired voice ask me. I looked over and saw Tom standing in the doorway stretching and rubbing his eyes. “I had a bad dream. I needed to clear my head.” I said softly. He came over by where I was sitting and rubbed my back. “It’s too cold out here. You need to come inside.” He said as he rubbed me to add warmth. “I’m fine. I like the cold. Plus I woke up sweating and needed to cool off.”  Responded. “Babe, are you okay?  You seem off.” He asked. I sighed and rested my head on my hand. “I’m fine. I just have a lot on my mind and a lot of thinking to do.” There was a small moment of silence between us and he gave me a half-hearted smile. “Syd, I want you to know something.” I nodded and waited for him to continue. “I’m always here for you, you know that right?” He asked me. I smile and nodded. “No matter what, I’ll always be right by your side. Even if you only want me as a friend, an acquaintance, an enemy, a stranger, a best friend, a boyfriend, or even more.” He paused smiling. “I’m here. I know you have a lot going on right now, and whatever you need, I can provide. Just say the word.” I sat up in my chair and hugged him, as he stood in front of me. My head rested on his stomach and he rubbed my head. “You’re such a great guy.” I whispered. “I have to be, otherwise I wouldn’t be able to get a girl like you.” I chuckled and pulled away from the hug. “Thank you, Tom. It really means a lot.” “Anything for you.” He responded smiling. “Would you mind giving me some time alone? I just want to think a little bit more.” I asked. “Of course. But I’m getting you a blanket!” He said walking inside. I smoked some more of my cigarette and stubbed it out as Tom came back. He wrapped a big fluffy blanket around me and brought me some warm tea. “Don’t stay out here too long. I don’t want you to get sick.” He said as he planted a kiss on my forehead. I smiled as he made his way back into the house. I sipped my warm tea and stared off into space thinking about what I needed to start changing.

  Later in the day, Niki, Leslie, and I headed over to the warehouse for bad practice. At this point, we had no idea what was in our future as band, but we continued to play together. “Why don’t we start turning your lyrics into a song? Like come up with some bass lines and guitar riffs?” Leslie asked. I nodded my head. “This is so exciting. I’ve never made my lyrics into an actual song.” I commented. It was like a part of me was coming to life. “Which song would you like to start with?” Niki asked. I thought for a moment and smiled. “Why don’t we start with Make Me.” “I remember that song! Do you know the lyrics by heart?” Leslie questioned. “Of course I do!” I said excitingly. I pulled out the sheet of paper with the lyrics scribbled on, and handed it to Leslie. “This part is the chorus. I think after we come up with how it should sound, we should come up with the flow and melodies.” I commented. “Sounds good.” Leslie responded. “So how did you picture this song when you first wrote it?” I smiled at the memory of when I wrote it. I wrote it the day after Christmas after spending the day with Tom and Mark. The night Mark told me he loved me, and the night where Tom and I made love for the first time. It was such a confusing yet wonderful night, and that’s exactly what the song was about. “It’s supposed to be slow in the beginning, then build up towards the end for a loud and faster exit.” I remarked. I hope it has made sense to them. “Oh okay, so you want it to start kind of like this?” Leslie asked as she started playing a constant low note on the bass. “Sort of but make the note less frequent. Like drag the note longer.” I stated. She nodded and did as I suggested. It sounded a lot better. Niki started following her lead and quietly tapped the bass drum with the foot pedal and gently tapped on the high hit. It was a nice, quiet, and smooth line. I decided to use my electric acoustic guitar and softly played some chords. I slid up and down the guitar playing power chords, and began singing the song. I sang the first verse of the song, and cued the band to stop when it got to the chorus. “Guys this sounds amazing. Way better than I imagined.” I said dazed. It was such a good feeling. “It’s a beautiful song. What do you want us to do for the chorus?” Niki asked. I thought for a moment then responded. “I think you guys could gradually become louder. Leslie play higher bass notes and play something soft on the snare drum, Niki.” “You’re such a good leader. Amber used to be such a bitch about making a new song.” Niki stated. “Oh don’t even get me started on that. I always fought with her on it.” Leslie said rolling her eyes. I chuckled and thanked them. We started playing the chorus and after an hour or so, our song was created, and it sounded wonderful. Tom walked in the door and started clapping. “Now that sounds like a hit.” He said. I rested my guitar on a stand and sat down on the couch lighting a cigarette. “Oh does it?” I asked smirking. “I hope so.” Leslie said plopping on the seat beside me and stealing my cigarette to take a drag. “When do you have to leave to go back on tour?” I asked turning to Tom. “Tomorrow night. I have to be in Vegas by the morning. We play a show late afternoon then have a day off before starting the world tour.” Tom remarked. I frowned at the thought of not seeing him for a while and snuggled up close to him. “Don’t worry, Syd. I’ll call and text you every day that I don’t see you.” “I just don’t want you to go.” I said sadly. “Oh shit, that reminds me. I have a meeting with Phil and some other managers today.” Niki said packing up her stuff.  “Please be careful around him.” Tom warned. “I will. Hopefully I’ll be back with some good news.” Niki yelled as she walked out of the door. We all sat on the couch finishing our cigarettes and relaxing. “What do you want to do today Les?”  I asked turning to her. “Well, I actually have some plans tonight. With Mason.” She said turning red. “Oh, nice! And what are you guys doing?” I said nudging her and wiggling my eyebrows. “We are seeing a movie tonight if you must know.” She said happily. “That’s good. I hope you guys have fun.” “But I need your help! I have no idea what to wear!” She said panicking. I laughed and hugged her. “I’ll help calm down. Let’s head home and see what you can wear.”

We headed home in Leslie’s car and as we reached home, she ran inside and grabbed everything from her closet. I examined the clothes she had spread out on the bed. “What does he like? What should I wear? Help!” Leslie yelled. “Mason is a fan of rocker girls. He likes the style and how it seems all badass and sexy.” Although we were in a band, Leslie was the girliest of us all. As me and Niki stuck to simple black and dark colors, Leslie loved wearing funky dresses and skirts with crazy makeup, but somehow she pulled it off. “Oh god, I don’t have anything like that.” She worried. “And that’s why I have a closet.” I chuckled leading her to my room across the hall. I thought for a moment and picked out the best outfit. Something simple, but something he would like. I grabbed some tight jeans, a black shirt that showed a good bit of cleavage,  a leather jacket, and some high heeled boots. “Throw this on. He will love it. Trust me.” I giggled. She went in the bathroom and came out. “Damn!” I said slapping her ass as she looked in the mirror. “I feel so hot. This is a nice change.” She said examining herself. “Alright, now let me do your makeup.” I responded excitingly. We went in the bathroom, and I applied makeup on Leslie. I gave her eyes a dark, smoky look and added bright red lipstick, which looked perfect with her red hair. I gave her one final looked and smiled. “Perfect. Now go get ‘em!” I exclaimed. “Thank you so much! I’ll come home and gush all about it tonight!” She said hurrying out the door. I waved as she drove off and turned around to see Tom on the couch. He tapped the seat beside him signaling me to come. I walked over and sat right next to him, and laid on his chest as he wrapped an arm around me. “I’m sorry I have to leave.” He said softly. “Don’t’ be. It’s not your fault, you have to play shows.” I said sadly. “I’ll find time to see you. I promise.” He said kissing my head. “Tom, I’ve been doing some thinking.” “About what?” He asked. “Everything. Since you’re going back on tour with Mark, I think it’s best if we stay friends for now.” He looked down and nodded. “I understand.” “Just for now. I know I say that to you a lot, but in all seriousness, that’s the best thing for now. Until I figure out what to say to Mark and while I figure things out with myself, I think its best.” He smiled and rubbed my back. “I agree. I think you need some time to figure out what you want in life. I also think it’s a smart move because we don’t need any more drama with Mark.” “Agreed.” I said confidently. I was glad he could understand. “This doesn’t meant that I don’t love you, because I do with everything I have, I just need some space and time, and that’s all.” “I know. I hope you realize what’s best for you, and by god I hope that realization it me.” I smiled and gave him a hug. “You’ll always be in my life no matter what.” I whispered.

Niki came home a few hours later, and Leslie arrived home soon after. Tom and I had watched some movies and fell asleep when they came home. “How was the date?” I asked sitting up and rubbing my eyes. “It was amazing. We made out the whole time. He is such a good kisser!” Leslie exclaimed. “What did he think about the outfit?” Tom asked intrigued. “He couldn’t take his eyes off me the whole night.” “Or his hands.” I smirked. She playfully hit me and sat at the kitchen table. “I have some news, about the meeting I went to tonight.” Niki said standing in front of all of us. “Good news and bad news. What do you want first?” She asked. “Good news!” I shouted. “Well, I talked to a few of Phil’s friends tonight and they watched a few videos of us playing and came to our last show and loved us. He said he wants to put us in a studio to record our first album.” I covered my mouth in shock and got up to jump up and down. Leslie came beside me and screamed with me. “What’s the bad news?” Tom asked.  “We don’t have any venues to play at because Phil doesn’t want us to return after the incident. And the other manager, his name is Larry, said that the only time we can record is in two months.” Niki said sadly. “So what are we supposed to do in two months? I’ve tried booking every venue near us, and they refuse us or never answer.” Leslie asked. “I’m not sure. He said taking a break to relieve our mind and write new songs is our best bet.” Niki replied. “But we already have songs. Sydney has a whole notebook full of them!” Leslie said angrily. “There’s nothing we can really do. We have an amazing offer. All we have to do is wait. Maybe we can write some fresh songs or get stuff out of the way or get a job ad save for new equipment and studio time.” Niki replied. Leslie sighed. “You’re right. We need to save money. I guess we can work with it.” There was a silence between all of us. “Guys, we shouldn’t be disappointed. This is good! We have a guaranteed spot in a recording studio to make our first album, hopefully a tour will come out of it. I can write us some new songs, and it will be okay.” I said trying to comfort everyone. “Okay. We can do this. Niki and I will work jobs to save money.” Leslie announced. “Syd, you should go back on tour while we wait.” Niki said. I gave her a shocked look. “What? Are you crazy?” I asked. “It’s a good idea. It’s what you wanted and it’s where you’re the happiest. It will give you inspiration to write music, and you’ll be back in no time.” Leslie chimed in. “Don’t I need to be here to rehearse with you guys?” I asked. “You pretty much know all of our songs. We can email and skype and come up with new ideas. C’mon Syd, you know you want this. Don’t you miss Green Day?” Leslie said persuading me. I sighed and nodded. “Then it’s settled. You will leave with Tom tomorrow.” Niki squealed.
