Pubblicato il 30 mag 2019 The natural peninsula of the harbour of Walvis Bay. This is a popular destination for newcomers and old locals alike. During the morning hours the weather is usually beautiful. Getting to Pelican point requires a 4×4 vehicle and a bit of time. This tour is only two and a half hours long, but this is a nice area for a longer picnic. The only access is via the Salt works road and Paaltjies parking area. Our first stop is on top of the dunes closest to the Salt Works office, to take in the view and let down the tires for the sand driving ahead. Along the way to the Paaltjies parking area, we will be driving in between the drying pans of the salt works. This is a favorite place for Flamingoes, and a good place to view them. After Paaltjies, we do a bit of beach driving and may see Jackal on our way to the small shipwreck and poles sticking out of the water. The calmness of this area is quite something. The jetty from which the Lighthouse used to get supplies is quite photogenic. The lighthouse on Pelican Point. This building is now a very high class lodging and restaurant, and the light at the top of the tower has been replaced with a much lower power one. As the ocean is encroaching on this structure, it will not be habitable for many more years. All along the point of Pelican Point is a seal colony with quite a number of seals. The smell is something to experience, and one cannot get too close to these dangerous and wild animals. The Zeila wreck on Namibia Skeleton coast A convenient shipwreck to see along Namibia's famous Skeleton Coast is the Zeila wreck found north of Swakopmund around 15 kilometres south of Henties Bay, near a popular beachside fishing spot. You will easily see the Zeila as approach along the C34 from the south, on the left side of the road. The Zeila was its resting place at this location in 2008. Seems this was an old Angolan fishing vessel that had been sold for scrap to an Indian company. It was being towed out of Walvis Bay but its tow rope broke in the middle of the night. The vessel drifted through the night and was then washed ashore at this location further north along the coast. Today the ship remains in very good condition wedged into the sand just off shore. It has become the nesting location for numerous birds, which is nice to see and photograph. You can visit the Zeila wreck by turning off the C34. There is a sign pointing you to a short off drive and car park. You'll likely see a few tour groups and other travellers doing the same. Lock up your car and walk 40-50 metres down to the beach and you'll be fairly close to the ship. How many rhinos died in 2018? In February 2019 the South African Department of Environmental Affairs, released the 2018 poaching numbers. Thankfully, the numbers show a decrease of 259 (1,028 rhino were poached in 2017). But this positive sign does not mean rhinos are now thriving. Cape Cross seals colony,Namibia Cape Cross has both historic and biological significance and is a popular tourist attraction. The Portuguese navigator, Diego Cão, landed here in 1486 on his second expedition south of the equator and planted a stone cross (padrão) to mark his journey. A replica is visible here today. Inclusive of a second replica, the area has been listed as a National Heritage Site. In the late 1800s, thousands of tons of guano (dried excrement of fish-eating birds used as fertiliser) were collected and exported to Europe. Cape fur seals were also harvested. About 100 workers lived at Cape Cross and a police station, customs and post office were established at the settlement, while a railway (the first in the country) was built to cross the salt pan and transport workers. Many men lost their lives due to the harsh conditions at Cape Cross. This reserve is a sanctuary for the world’s largest breeding colony of Cape fur seals, with up to 210 000 seals present during the breeding season in November and December. Inside the fascinating world of Namibia’s Himba people. This magnificent tribe inhabit the Kaokoland area of Namibia and are descendants of a group of Herero herders who fled into the remote north-west of Namibia after been displaced by the Nama. They still clutch their traditional beliefs today by breeding and herding their cattle and goats and living a semi nomadic lifestyle. Himba women especially, as well as Himba men rub their bodies with red ochre and fat (Otjize) to protect themselves from the scorching sun and arid climate of the Kaokoland. This also wards off mosquitos as individual woman mix the Otjize with local plants and shrubs making a perfume of their own scents.
