MAD AT GOD - MATT MURDOCK
Tumblr media
Season Three - I’m Not Sorry
tags: @ironprincessstranger @johnmurphys-sass @dusstory @americaarse @astrobees @mayasaurus--rex @woowwwee // seven // finale // masterlist
Pairing: Matt x Reader
Word Count: 7,735
Summary: Moves and countermoves. The cat and mouse game nearly draws to a close as Nelson and Murdock reunite in a last ditch effort to finish things from the right side of the law.
Truthfully, the reveal went better than you had expected. After a few questions and a bit of yelling, Ray was willing to hear you two out. You explained about getting his wife and son out of the line of fire. Ray suggested they leave New York all together but you knew Fisk would be watching all airports and seaports. You were going to offer to call Natasha, see if her billionaire buddy could spare some space but Matt said he knew someone to ask.
While Matt made his call, you asked Ray to go and get Seema and Sami.
Next thing you knew, you were driving Ray and his frazzled family to your apartment. From there, Brett took them in his car while you and Matt headed upstairs. You were both quick to change into something that would catch little to no attention before rushing back into the streets.
You and Matt walked together, his cane in one hand and the other arm linked through yours. Your body was growing heavy with every step and it almost felt as Matt had to hold you up as the weight of your latest string of endeavors began settling on your shoulders, making your latest collection of wounds thump with a heavy pulse. As if he knew that - which he probably did - he gave you a gentle nudge with his elbow.
“Can I ask you something?” He said suddenly, the rhythmic glide of his cane the only other noise on the street.
“Sure.” You nodded.
“Sister Ma- My mother told me that you look at me like I hung the stars.” He began carefully, measuring your reaction. “Is that true?”
“I mean… Did you?” You tried and he chuckled. “I know you didn’t hang the stars but…” You looked up at the night sky, only able to see pinpricks of light past the yellow glow of street lamps but that was more than what you had seen in months. “They’ve always been brighter when you’re around.” You turned back to the path you were walking. “Even now… Days are warmer. Flowers smell sweeter. It’s like everything quiets down and life isn’t so bad. You know what I mean?”
“Yeah.. I think I do.” He answered softly.
“Alright, alright. Don’t get all mushy on me now.” You joked as you nudged him with your shoulder, earning another small laugh. “I thought you were this whole super dark, brooding vigilante right now.”
“I guess you bring out a better side.” He said honestly. “You bring back Matt Murdock.”
“I thought you were leaving him behind.”
“I thought so, too.”
You two met up with Foggy just as Brett was pulling up with Ray and his family. You thanked Brett’s mom as she welcomed you in and she was as kind as you could’ve expected. Brett helped the family get settled while the rest of you waited in the living room.
There was tension brewing in the bedroom as Ray and Seema talked and you felt bad. You wanted to go and help Ray explain, maybe take some of the blame so their marriage didn’t implode, but that felt like a massive overstep. It was clear that Ray loved Seema and she loved him, but that betrayal would be hard to move past. Instead, you pulled some of that tension into your chest in hopes of them having a rational conversation.
You cleared your throat once it hit you and gave Mrs. Mahoney another thanks before heading outside, claiming to need air. Matt was quick to follow but Foggy stayed behind to talk to her.
“You okay?” Matt asked, putting a hand on your back as you leaned against the bars.
“Huh? Yeah, just… Sometimes it’s harder to block stuff out, especially when I’m tired.” You explained, rubbing your eyes. “I could feel the pain and everything from Ray’s wife. I feel like some of this is my fault..”
“How could it be your fault?”
“I didn’t stop this.” You sighed and turned to lean your back against the railing so you could cross your arms. “You were right. I should’ve just made sure this didn’t happen. Now a perfectly happy marriage is gonna be destroyed because Fisk used Ray.”
“You can’t control everything, sweetheart.”
“What about Sami? That little boy looks up to his father like he lifts the sun every morning. And now, what? He loses that because of a jackass like Fisk? That’s not fair, to either of them.”
“I know.” Matt agreed softly. “But if this works, and we get Fisk put away, Ray’s family will be safe.”
“But Seema won’t trust him again.”
“You trust me?”
“What?”
“After all the lies and the stuff I’ve put you through, everything I’ve said to you recently, do you trust me?”
“With my life.”
He gave a small smile and put a hand on your elbow. “Then I think they can get through this.”
Foggy came out soon after and talked to Matt for a minute. You were glad that you two were able to convince Matt to at least try the legal route. If that fell through, you weren’t exactly sure what would happen next. But that was a bridge you would cross if you got to it.
“So what now?” Ray sighed as he met you guys outside.
“You’re gonna testify against Fisk, after you hire them to represent you.” You answered.
“Represent me?” Ray questioned at the same time Foggy said “Them?”
“Rahul Nadeem, meet the brilliant minds behind Nelson and Murdock, attorneys at law.” You gestured to the boys.
“I thought your old firm packed it up.”
“Everyone loves a comeback story.”
“I don’t know about this, Y/L/N.”
“These two are the best attorneys I know. You’re in good hands.”
“What about you? How do you fit into everything?”
“I can serve as an additional testimony or a character witness, but I’m pretty sure there’s a conflict of interest card to be pulled if I help represent you while still at the bureau. Even for me, there’s limits to what I can get away with.”
You’re not leaving?”
“Not yet, at least. With Dex still after us, I need to keep an eye on him. There’s no need for guessing what he does or doesn’t know if I can stay close enough.”
“Smart.” He nodded.
“She’s always been the brains of this trio.” Foggy threw an arm over your shoulders. “We won't let you down, Ray.”
“You, Seema, Sami.” You agreed. “We’re gonna do everything we can to help your family.”
“I know… Thank you, Y/N.”
Early the next morning, you and Matt brought Ray to Fogwell’s.
“This is where you went?” You asked him as you walked in, already seeing Karen in there. She gave you a small smile and you waved slightly.
“Nobody knows about this place. We’ll be safe here.” Matt shrugged and headed to the back room.
You patted Ray on the shoulder and gestured to the table Karen was set up at before following Matt down the short hall.
“You alright?” He asked without turning to face you.
“Yeah, just tired.” You leaned back against the wall.  “And those two don’t like each other very much so..” You gave a small smile.
“You don’t have to do this if you don’t wanna.” He offered, putting his hands on your arms.
“Yeah I do.” You sighed and grabbed onto the material of his shirt. “For a second, can we just… take a moment? Forget about everything out there and between us and just…”
He smiled softly and stepped closer, moving one hand to the side of your head. He leaned down and pressed his forehead gently against yours. You took a deep breath and let go of his shirt so you could wrap your arms around his waist. Your head dropped to his shoulder and he chuckled slightly as he put a hand to the back of your head. His other hand was on your lower back as he pressed a gentle kiss to the side of your head.
As Matt held her close, very few things plagued his mind. Most of them were what he noticed about her. The tension in her muscles. The thrum of her pulse. The rise and fall of her chest. The way her arms were locked together, as if to keep him with her. He wondered how he could ever be so stupid as to walk away from her.
The other thoughts that he could put to words were small, selfish prayers. He prayed that there’d be more to their story, that it was a new first page rather than where it would end. He knew his thoughts echoed her name since he realized he was alive, every day until he saw her again. And then even more after. He left her too soon. He always knew that, whether he’d admit it or not. And now, as she was clinging to him like she was drowning and he was her lifeboat, he prayed that she wasn’t truly in love with someone else. That no one else was waiting for her.
After taking a minute to enjoy each other’s company and take a breath, you two headed back into the main room. Karen and Ray were wrapping up their previous conversation, punctuating the tension in the room as Matt began talking about getting Ray’s family out of town.
“We were thinking overseas, maybe a friend or a distant relative.” Karen offered tightly, almost instantly snapping into focus.
“My brother’s wife has a cousin in Bihar.” Ray nodded. “I never liked him.”
“I can get them on a flight as early as tonight.” You said plainly. “But I’m guessing Fisk is watching the airports for exactly this so they’d have to fly outta Montreal, but a car is just as easy to get.”
“They’ll be watching my bank accounts.” Ray tried.
“We’ll cover it.” Matt promised and you nodded with a gentle, reassuring smile. You pulled your phone and messaged your old friend Rick, telling him you needed some help.
“Thanks.. But it might be more than I deserve.”
“Look, you… you hurt people.” Karen answered. “But it doesn’t define you.” She took a glance towards you.
“I’ve done worse than you have, believe me.” You offered honestly. “If I can have my life, so can you, Ray.”
Your phone rang in your hands as Matt sent Ray off. You stepped to the far corner and answered, turning your back to your friends as the conversation started.
“Long time, Y/N.” Rick said happily.
“Hasn’t been that long.. I had you help get someone out not too long ago.”
“No, Natasha called me for that.”
“Yeah, but it was for me so potato tomato.”
“I don’t think that’s how it goes.”
“But you knew what I meant.”
“Yeah, yeah. So what do you need this time?”
“Trip to Bihar for a mom and her son.”
He let out a long sigh. “Bihar, huh?”
“But they can’t fly out from New York, so I’ll need a car to Montreal.”
“And a car out of the country? Y/N, this one’ll probably clear out your tab and then some.”
“Yeah, well, if it doesn’t, can you cash out the rest and give it to them?”
“Why are these people important to you?”
“Since when do you ask questions?”
He chuckled slightly. “Tell you what, I still have that little buried airstrip outside New York. They can fly with a friend of mine from there so it’s cheaper and I’ll cover the car.”
“Look at you, going soft.” You teased. “How much does that leave for them?”
“Somewhere around $600.”
“Can you make it $850 and I'll send a check for the rest?”
“I can give them $800 and call it even.”
“You’re the best, Rick. Thank you.”
“I’ll call you when it’s ready. Where am I getting them from?”
“I’ll get you the address when you need it.”
“Seriously?”
“With what I’m getting them away from, I can’t take any chances. It’s nothing personal.”
“Still all business, eh?” He joked and you frowned to yourself. “No worries, Y/N.  We’ll talk soon. And hey?”
“Yeah?”
“Call your cousin.”
“Goodbye, Rick.”
“I’m serious!”
“I know.” You laughed before ending the call and heading back to the table.
You sat beside Matt as Karen stepped out and he turned towards you. He put a hand on your leg and you leaned your head against his shoulder. He huffed a small chuckle before giving your leg a pat. He stood to go change, leaving you in the small room alone. You let out a deep sigh and wondered how you had gotten to that point.
How were you pitted against Fisk again? How had he swooped your partner right out from under you? How had your vigilante persona been dangled over your head as leverage? How was your career at the FBI suddenly dirtier than any work you did for Dreykov?
Maybe your life was going exactly as it was supposed to. Or maybe something diverted it so far off track that it would be nothing but chaos from here on out.
Maybe you should’ve just taken Homeland’s offers to disappear after the carousel.
Ray came back in during your quiet contemplation and paced the small room. Your eyes glanced up, only for a moment, before reverting your soft gaze to the table.
“Can I ask you something?” Ray said tentatively.
“Is it about Exodus?” Your brows raised as you faced him again. You saw the man had stopped walking and was now facing you, fidgeting with his fingers. The uncertainty radiated off him so you gave a small, reassuring smile and waved for him to go ahead.
“How did Dex know? About you?”
“When we got into his apartment, after you left, Matt and I were heading to the roof. Dex threw a piece of glass and it cut the band for my mask. When I grabbed it, he saw me.”
“Did he tell Fisk?”
You chuckled slightly before letting out a loud sigh of amusement. “No.. Fisk already knew. He was trying to intimidate me into working for him by using that secret against me, but Dex was easier to manipulate.”
“Is it true that you can get into peoples heads?”
“I’m not a telepath.” You shook your head. “I’m tele-empathetic. I can read and manipulate emotions.”
“Oh…”
“Speaking of which.” You said as you pulled yourself to sit straighter as Matt came back in and sat at the edge of the boxing ring. “You need to relax a little.” You waved a hand to clear Ray’s nervousness. “Tower’s gonna eat you alive if you don’t get it together.”
“I loved my job.” He reasoned “And I loved being the good guy. I want to be on the right side of the line again.”
“You didn’t love it enough to stop Fisk.” Matt laughed.
“Matt.” You warned as he hopped down and nodded towards Ray.
“Fisk knows how to make people vulnerable. He got my sister-in-law’s health insurance canceled, left my family with bills to pay. Bills that I had to-“
“So you take out a loan, you sell your house, you figure it out. You don’t allow yourself to become an accessory.”
“It wasn’t that easy-“ Ray tried as you argued, “He can’t just sell his house when he has his son to think about!”
“You backed his play, Ray. You moved him into his hotel. You even gave him his toys back, gave him a new one too.”
“He was giving us information that saved lives.”
“Yeah, while he was taking lives. While he was taking over the city.”
“What the hell are you doing?” You grabbed Matt’s arm to turn his focus on you but he yanked his arm away.
“I thought you were my lawyer.” Ray pressed.
“I am your lawyer but I can’t do anything to help you if you can’t answer this one simple question. Why didn’t you blow the whistle when you watched your boss murder an agent?”
“I don’t know.” Ray said quietly.
“Or when you saw Dex walk into that church?”
“Matt.” You tried but he shrugged you off.
“You didn’t say a goddamn word when he murdered a priest.”
“Matt!” You said firmly and turned on him.
“I don’t know.”
“Then why are we here?” Matt yelled.
“Because I took the damn bait!” Ray answered with the same tone. There was a pause while your hand twisted at your side to bring everything back to a calmer level. “Because I didn’t want my son to see me as just an average federal employee… I messed up. I destroyed my life, my family’s life. And I would do anything to take it all back again.”
“Good.” Matt nodded. “You tell that to the DA, and I can help you.”
You smacked his arm as he turned back to the table. You faced Ray and gave an apologetic smile. He gave a small nod before you stepped closer and put an arm over his shoulders. He hesitantly embraced you back and you felt a heavy shudder as that regret toppled against you.
“I know he’s a dick right now-“ You explained as you pulled away. “-but he’s a good lawyer. He’s gonna help you.”
“Thanks, Y/N.” He nodded. “And thank you for helping my family. I don’t know how I can repay you.”
“Consider it my apology.” You shrugged. “It never should’ve got to this point.”
“Yeah..”
“I’ve gotta get to work. Call me if you need anything.” You said quickly. “Oh, and Matt? Fisk nearly had me when he showed me that prison fight. If you hadn’t come back that night, it probably would’ve been me instead of Dex.. I would’ve done whatever I had to so I could protect you and your secret, even in death... Think about that.”
“I never would’ve asked you to do that.” He reasoned.
“You wouldn’t have had to and you know it. I didn’t ask you to stay at Midland but you did because you thought it was right. You thought I’d be safe, right?”
He nodded silently.
“Ray didn’t ask to be stuck in the middle of this bullshit either. Just help him do right by Sami, alright?”
As you were turning to leave, you nearly ran into Tower and Foggy. Foggy gave you a quick hug and you greeted Tower in a hurry before rushing out and to the hotel for
work.
When you got in, you greeted the few agents that were left. All people you could no longer trust, even though most were nice enough. People that you knew would try to kill you if they were told to, whether they wanted to or not. People that weren’t on your side and may end up paying with their own lives. You set your shoulders as you walked down the hall and followed behind Dex as he entered the suite with the lunch tray.
“Can I get you anything else, Sir?” Dex asked, to which he was ignored.
“I just wanted to say I’m sorry about Karen Page. She would be dead if Agents Nadeem and Y/L/N hadn’t interfered.”
Again, he was met with silence and you almost felt bad for him. Dex needed reassurance, needed confirmation that he was doing right by someone. And to deprive him of that was what would truly break whatever was left in him. Whether or not that break would work in your favor was still up in the air so you couldn’t afford it. Not yet, at least.
“After everything you’ve done for me, I… I just wanted
to tell you that I’ll keep my word. I will find her and when I do, I am going-“
“No.” Fisk said simply and even you were surprised. “The matter will be handled but not by you.”
“I can handle Nadeem and Y/N.”
“Do nothing… It’s clear that I have put too great a burden on your shoulders. Your relationship with Agent Y/L/N, it was too sentimental for you to finish the job. You let her beat you.”
“I don’t care about Y/N, alright? I don’t. I can make this right.”
“I see it, the way you look at her.” Fisk nodded slightly as he caught sight of you. “It’s admirable that you want to protect her but it needs to end. She wouldn’t do the same for you.”
“That’s enough.” You spoke finally, earning a quick turnaround from Dex. “Let’s go, Dex.”
You could see the heavy movements of his chest as he breathed deeply. You offered a small nod and held a hand out for him to take. He looked between you and Fisk before taking your hand and letting you guide him out.
The small action was in no way a show of solidarity. It was nowhere near you two being on the same side again. All it was, to you, was a stand against Fisk. You very clearly had already chosen Matt’s side since Dex attacked the Bulletin, and even before that. You wouldn’t turn on the man you loved - and the man who still loved you - for a man who was dead set on killing your friend.
For the time being, you would use that soft spot to your advantage for as long as you had it.
And it showed Fisk that you could still take Dex away.
“You can’t protect them both.” Fisk called as you began to leave. “You’ll have to choose.”
“So will you.” You glanced up and saw Vanessa standing near the top of the stairs. “Who will you protect?”
Back at Fogwell’s, Matt and Foggy were well into their conversation with DA Tower about what Ray knew. The back and forth finally settled on five years jail time for Ray, on all felony accounts. Tower promised to have a grand jury together by 4pm, so all that was left was securing immunity for Y/N.
“We have another agent who’s willing to testify alongside Ray, a character witness in his favor but also a witness to some of these crimes.” Matt began calmly, though if Y/N was there, she’d tell him he was practically vibrating.
“So where are they?” Tower shrugged.
“We’re not bringing her in until she’s guaranteed full immunity.” Foggy continued and Matt knew his friend was feeling that same surge, given how his heart was steadily beating faster.
No matter how many times they’d defended someone, how many times they went tit for tat against their oppositions in court. It was different when their friends were on the line. It always meant that much more.
“She…” Tower repeated with a nod. “It’s Y/L/N, isn’t it?”
“Immunity.” Foggy repeated calmly.
“If she’s as involved and knowledgeable as you say, then she’d be in deep shit. She’d lose her position at the FBI and there’d have to be jail time… What about an anonymous witness?”
“That’s hardly ever used in the US.” Foggy replied with furrowed brows.
“I’m sure I can make it work..”
“If you can’t….” Matt tried, waving his hand expectantly.
“How about… No jail time if she just peacefully retires from the FBI.” Tower shrugged.
“She won’t go for that.” Matt countered. “She loves that job.”
“I don’t care. I mean, don’t you guys see that she is just as much to blame as he is?” Tower insisted, pointing to Ray. “She didn’t stop anything either.”
“No, but she warned you from the start, didn’t she?” Matt answered smoothly, to which Tower sighed heavily. “She told you it was a bad idea but you all went along with it anyway.”
The DA cursed quietly before running a frustrated hand down his face. “If she can’t testify anonymously, then I guess she just has to deal with repercussions from the bureau.”
“Thank you. I’m sure we can get her to agree to that.” Foggy nodded with a proud smile before Tower left. He then turned to Matt and patted his friend on the shoulder. “You’re calling her.”
“What?” Matt’s jaw dropped. “She’s not gonna answer me!”
“She’s not gonna answer me!” Foggy reasoned. “And I thought you guys were patching things up. What happened to that?”
“C’mon, man.”
“When has she ever not answered when you called?” Foggy mumbled as he pulled out his phone and dialed Y/N, putting it on speaker. “But hey, feels good, right?” He grinned.
“What? Letting Ray serve five years?”
“Any other lawyers, he would’ve gone away a lot longer. But I meant working together, you and me.”
Foggy was so caught up in his own words that he didn’t realize Y/N had answered. Even Matt barely heard the shift from dial tone to active call.
“Doing what we’re supposed to be doing the way we’re supposed to be doing it.”
“Yeah..” Matt gave a small chuckle. “It felt good.”
“Right? I miss this. Working together, giving a shit about my clients.”
Y/N laughed quietly on the other end of the call.
“Not just billing midtown jackholes in six minute increments.”
“Bet those jackholes pay well though, huh?” Y/N laughed through the phone. “Matt make fun of the new shoes yet?”
“No, I was getting to it though.” Matt continued the joke and Foggy mocked the laughter. “I don’t know, Y/N/N. He might’ve gotten used to the money.”
“It suits him.” She agreed, and Matt knew there was a smile on her face.
“So I’ll get un-used to it.” Foggy countered happily. “We should do this again. All of us.”
“Don’t get ahead of yourself. We’re not there yet.”
“But we’re getting there.”
Matt let out a small sigh but nodded, begrudgingly agreeing.
“Guys.. As much as I love this reconciliation, did you call me just so I’d be included?” Y/N asked with a light chuckle.
“No, actually, we have an update.” Foggy answered. “When do you get off?”
“I can probably leave around three for lunch or just take a half day if I need it. Why?”
“Tower can get the grand jury at four and you can get added to testify.”
There was a brief silence in the conversation, filled with the sounds of shuffling feet as Y/N was likely moving further away from her colleagues.
“Okay… What’s at stake for me?”
“You should be able to testify anonymously.” Matt explained. “And then you only have to take whatever backlash comes from the bureau.”
“You mean from Fisk through the bureau.” She scoffed.
“It was either that or an early retirement.” Foggy added. “I think it’s a solid plan, Y/N. And I’m pretty sure we’re gonna need you to sell this thing.”
She sighed and allowed a small silence to pass. Matt could only imagine the thoughts running through her head. She had to be worried about repercussions from Fisk. She’d been taunting him, challenging him since she’d met him, and now she’d be taking yet another stand against him. She had to know that every stand was potentially another nail in her coffin.
But how many times had she cheated death? Matt had started to think she was immortal, though not invulnerable. And they both knew Fisk knew what cards to play to expose her vulnerabilities.
Matt hated and loved that he was one of them.
“Okay.” Was all she said. “I’ll meet you guys where I left you and we can head together.”
“No, we should split.” Matt argued.
“No, we just go unmarked. Maybe a couple switches if it gets tense. I’m not losing this like we lost Jasper.”
“I really think-“
“And I think you need to stop questioning me.” She said firmly. “I’ve done stuff like this more than either of you. I think I should- Oh, shit. I gotta go.”
“Wait, Y/N.” Foggy tried but she was already gone.
“There you are.” Dex said as he approached you with an unusually welcoming smile. “Who you talking to?”
“Friend from college.” You shrugged and shoved your phone away. “Why are you in such a good mood?”
“You’ll see.” He nodded towards the door and began backing away, turning to walk straight once you began following him.
When you two walked in, you were met with two other agents attempting to maneuver a large white painting with a wooden frame.
Rabbit in a snowstorm.
“I thought she wouldn’t sell…” You spoke softly, in mild disbelief that Fisk’s most sentimental possession that he was denied had found its way back to him. “Something about the Nazis and her family being the rightful owners.”
“Just took some extra persuasion.” He shrugged.
That sentence didn’t sit right in your stomach as Vanessa joined you.
“This is from Wilson.” Dex told her and you stepped aside to let her stand between you two.
“I was wondering where it had gone.” Vanessa said, looking at the painting she too adored.
“It was home.” You mumbled and wiped a hand down your face to cover it.
“Y/N, wasn’t it?” She smiled at you. “Y/N Vostokoff.”
“Well, no. Y/L/N, actually.” You admitted.
Her brows raised slightly and she nodded. “Wilson has spoken very highly of you. He respects you a great deal.”
You saw in her eyes a knowing spark. Fisk told her who you were and she was letting you know. She was using her words from the last conversation you had with her as Exodus as a lure to flaunt her knowledge of your truth in front of you.
“The feelings aren’t mutual.” You lifted your chin slightly.
“Tell me, do you still have the painting?”
“Vibrant and loud, but also gentle and vulnerable… Yeah, I do. But it’s not hung anymore. Too many painful memories. The guy I was with when I bought it? We didn’t work out.”
“I see.” She nodded slightly. “Art is wonderful that way, isn’t it? Something so simple-“ She turned to face the large, seemingly blank canvas. “-can be so influential.”
“A bit unnerving as well.”
“As all powerful things are.” She looked over her shoulder to you again. “On either end of the spectrum.”
You looked at the simple painting again and while you remained unimpressed by the creation, your eyes snagged on the new pop of color on the side. A brief splatter of blood that almost no one would notice, but it stood out like neon to you. You then realized that the woman didn’t change her mind. Of course she didn’t. Of course Dex went off and did something terrible to an innocent woman who had suffered her fair share.
“We haven’t formally met yet.” Dex said and took a step to be more in front of Vanessa. Your brows raised slightly but you said nothing. “I’m Agent Poindexter.. Dex. And if you need anything at all, just think of me as the new James Wesley.”
You sucked in a breath between your teeth and tilted your head, earning the attention of both Vanessa and Dex.
“It’s a shame what happened to old Wesley, isn’t it? A whole clip on his chest… And an unrecognizable burn through his sternum. Now, I’d hate to see something like that happen to you.” You said with fake concern lacing your words. It earned you a confused expression that quickly shifted to a glare from your partner.
Vanessa offered you a slight smirk before returning to the previous conversation. “It’s a pleasure to meet you… Vanessa Marianna.” She moved to sit on one of the sofas and Dex shot you a warning look, to which you shrugged.
“I’ve always told Wilson that he has great taste in art.” Dex continued and you rolled your eyes.
“He does love to put beautiful things on display.” She agreed, but there seemed to be something else she was hinting at. “Where’d you find it?”
“Some lady had it. Wilson couldn’t get her to sell it.”
“Well, that must’ve been very disappointing for him. It’s the painting in his collection that means the most to us.”
“I figured as much, so I thought I’d ask her one last time.”
Vanessa scanned the painting again and you saw her attention catch on the slightly bloodied corner as well. You felt a brief uncertainty from her but it shifted to a strange sense of comfort. You wondered if she found peace in violence, in chaos, and maybe that’s why she liked Fisk.
If that was her, a seemingly innocent and unsuspecting woman, what did that mean for you? But when you thought about the violent men you attracted, you were genuinely thankful you were still alive.
The rest of your day was uneventful and you left for lunch right on time. Dex tried to get you to stay, to go with him and “get things back to normal” but you refused. He tried to reason that he was just off from Julie ghosting him and you had half a mind to scream that she was probably dead. Only reasons you didn’t were because you didn’t want to cause a scene when you were drastically outnumbered and if someone threw Matt’s death at you like that, you would’ve gone on a massacre that rivaled your escape from the Red Room.
“Courthouse. No stops.” Matt told the van driver before ushering Ray to the back. You hurried over and watched the relief cross Ray’s face as you got to them. “Nice of you to join us.” Matt smiled gently.
“Yeah, well.” You shrugged with a smile. “It’s not like I have a reason not to.”
“None of this bothers you, does it?” Ray asked a nervous chuckle as you climbed into the back of the van.
“Y’know, with the company of my esteemed attorney here, I have to tell you.” You began dramatically, watching Matt try to hold back a smile. “Rahul Nadeem, I’ve been through so much worse.. Fisk doesn’t scare me.”
“You ever think maybe he should?” He tried as the van took off, just trying to keep his mind distracted so as to not lose his nerve.
You cleared your throat slightly to break up the tension between you all. With a small flick of your fingers, you cleared his uncertainty and let trust fill its place. Trust in you and in Matt. He looked at you and then to Matt, who offered an interested head tilt in return, before he nodded to himself.
“I thought about it… But then who would do this?” You gestured to the van and he broke a small smile.
“You’re nuts, yknow that?” He laughed.
“So I’ve been told.” You nodded with a grin.
After a bit of silence, Ray turned to Matt.
“I’ve gotta ask you something.” He said simply.
“You wanna know about Daredevil.” Matt sighed and you tilted your head, quietly acknowledging that it was a fair thing to wonder.
“I stepped off the path for a few weeks and it destroyed my life… But your life, both of you, you step on and off all the time.”
“It complicates our life, too.” Matt said, seemingly thinking of just how that lifestyle affected him. “Trying to have it both ways.”
“Does it?” Ray scoffed slightly. “I mean, your friends know who you are, what you do. Your girl-“ He gestured to you. “-is right there with you.”
“My life almost got them killed.” Matt countered. “And not for the first time.”
“Not to mention what I drag them into.” You confessed and gave a small lift of your hand. “Everything he puts at risk, so do I. Problem is that I tend to make more rash decisions because I’m the one who’s stepped off the path… He talks about what he’s done and all this but he’s never gone far from the path, y’know? He’s always just walking next to it and finds his way back. Every time, I still try to do the right thing and stay on the straight and narrow but… There’s blood on my hands, Ray. A lot. And there’s always going to be blood on my hands. But if it keeps my friends safe and it helps someone else sleep at night, if a little girl can go home to her parents instead of becoming something like me, I’ll do it again.. We don’t get it both ways. We each sacrifice a lot because we continue to choose this. We give up certain things and..” Your eyes turned to Matt. “Even certain people.”
“Yeah, I don’t see how we could.” Matt sighed, his head turning to the floor as if disappointed. That feeling flashed, only for a moment, before disappearing and being replaced. You felt bad as you understood it was what you said.
Ray insinuated that you could have the people you loved and the lifestyle you continued to choose. And your words implied that you didn’t believe that or didn’t want it. But it wasn’t that you didn’t want it. It was that, at every opportunity, life seemed to not let you. You didn’t believe you were meant to have everything you wanted, so you sacrificed your relationship with Matt because just having him as a friend was better than him dead.
“You guys already do.” Ray said gently, meeting your eyes and offering a small nod towards Matt to which you frowned slightly. “I messed up, and no matter what happens today, I don’t know if my wife’s ever coming back.”
“She loves you, Ray.” You offered honestly, earning a small smile from him. “You’re the father of her child, for crying out loud. It might take time but you’re not gonna lose her. You won’t lose your family.”
“And your friends, they keep coming back.. How do you hold on to them?”
You turned to Matt and he sighed to himself. You leaned back and crossed your arms with slightly raised brows, interested in what Matt would say.
“It’s not me.. It’s them.” He nodded towards you. “They hold on to me.”
You noticed Matt’s attention shift, but all you could hear was the honking. You pushed yourself up quickly and climbed to a kneel as you ditched your blazer. You reached for your gun as Matt motioned for you to get down. Seconds later, he grabbed Ray and your trio dropped to your stomachs. When the bullets finally stopped, you got up quickly and gripped your weapon. You turned over your shoulder and felt a fading sensation from the front seat.
“Driver’s dead.” You said quickly before waving a hand to Ray’s attention “Get your gun out. Matt?”
“Uh..” Matt said before grabbing your hands and showing where to shoot. “There’s a guy right here.”
“Y/L/N, we can’t shoot blind.” Ray tried.
“They’re reloading. Fire your weapon!” Matt insisted.
You groaned in mild annoyance and fired two quick shots. Matt gave you a new target and you fired again. Ray took the third so you hopped out of the van.
You felt a hand trying to close around your arm as you landed but you were quick to move out of reach. You kept your gun raised as you crept around the stopped vehicles. You came across a man on the floor, gripping his bleeding leg, so you came up and pressed your foot against the wound. He yelled in pain so you fired a shot through his forehead. A loud shatter drew your attention and you saw Matt diving through the windshield.
You rolled your eyes slightly at his dramatics before meeting with him and Ray.
“We need to stick together.” Matt scolded as he repositioned his glasses.
“If we did what I said, we wouldn’t be here.” You mumbled as you took position in front of them. “Just follow me.”
“Y/N, just stop and listen.” He grabbed your arm and yanked your back. You pulled out of his grip and used your other hand to press him back against the nearest car. “Trust me, alright? You two pretend to lead me and do what I say.”
“Мне не нужна твоя помощь.” You sneered, pushing off him and moving forward again. (I don’t need your help.)
You moved to the other side of the cars and got to the side of the next two. While they were distracted firing at Ray, you moved quickly. You ran at them and let yourself collide with the first man, hooking an arm around his shoulders. Using the first man as leverage, you slammed your feet against the second one. The impact made him fall back and hit the back of his head against the car.
As your momentum shifted to push you backwards, you moved your leg until you felt your foot against the car. You hooked the toe of your shoe into the wheel well. That allowed you somewhere to steady yourself and pull, which forced the first man to slam back against the hood. You climbed up so one knee was against his chest as you slammed your gun against his temple.
You watched as Matt and Ray made their way forward but you were distracted by a heavy hit of fear. You quickly looked around the cars before seeing the familiar yellow fog leaking from a sedan a few feet away. At the same time you were making your way to her, one of Fisk’s gunmen was heading that way.
You acted fast, firing a shot into the man’s leg. He buckled almost instantly, which allowed Matt time to pick him up and slam him into the vehicle. You opened her door and got her attention while Matt fell into his helpless blind man routine. Flashing your badge was enough to get her to trust you and run as fast as she could in the other direction.
When you found the guys again, they were stuck in a fistfight on a bus. You climbed to the hood of the closet car, knelt as you lined your shot at the man that had Ray, and fired. The bullet landed in the side of the man’s head, causing him to fall limp. You slid down and hurried across as Matt kicked a man out of the bus. When he tried to get up, you slammed your heel down to finish it.
“Oh shit.” Matt groaned.
“What?” Your brows furrowed.
“It’s a cab.”
“Who cares? Just get in. Ray, you drive.”
You climbed into the backseat and shoved your gun back into place. You wiped the blood splatters from your hands and face but could do nothing about the splotches on your clothes.
At least you had evidence of the attack.
Ray made it a quick drive to the courthouse and the three of you were quickly ushered into the building. You met with Foggy and Karen, who didn’t bother to hide their concerned expressions. You offered a small smile for reassurance but that seemed to only deepen Foggy’s frown. Tower rushed your group through the halls, which allowed for Foggy to give a rundown on what would happen next.
“What about my family?” Ray asked, turning to you.
“My guy is taking care of it. They should be out by tonight, early morning at the latest. Karen, can you get the details to Seema?” You leaned around the group to see her on the far end.
“Yeah, yeah I can.” She nodded quickly.
You pulled a folded envelope from your back pocket and passed it over, with all the details of where they were going and what you were able to give them, along with the number to text her address to once you said it was good. You explained that you’d tell them once you heard back.
“Right after I do this.” She gestured outside.
“Well, wait.” You stepped behind the guys to move closer. “What are you trying to do?”
“Press conference.”
“Are you insane?”
“Look, it’ll keep the majority of eyes off you guys for a minute. I’m pretty sure he’s gonna be pretty interested in what I’m gonna have to say.”
“Karen…”
“I’ll be fine.”
“Be careful.” You sighed and she patted your arm before hurrying off.
Tower led you and Ray into the courtroom and the small room had an entirely different atmosphere. It was suffocatingly tense and the fear hung heavy in the room. You cleared your throat slightly to try and break it up, but it seemed to swell right back together. You tilted your head slightly with a quick brow raise to admit to yourself that it wouldn’t change.
“Before we begin, I should make it known that your petition for an anonymous witness has been declined. Given the severity of this case, any and all federal agents need to be identified and held responsible. Will both witnesses proceed?” The judge explained as you all approached the bench.
Ray’s hand found yours and you shivered slightly. It was no different, to testify anonymously or not. You stood against Fisk before and survived. You took on Dex multiple times and survived. The Hand. Yakuza. Red Room. Billy Russo. You wouldn’t turn and cower because your name was going to be attached to your words.
You would stand against Fisk, mask or no mask and taunt his retaliations yet again.
Let him come. Let him try.
“Yes, I will.” You nodded.
They took Ray’s testimony first while you sat beside Tower. It seemed to drag on, every word raking across your nerves. Your own body felt electric, thrumming heavily with every second that ticked by. At first, you assumed it was your own jitters but you had gone through worse. You were raised to withstand worse, so why were you so rattled?
You realized then it was coming from somewhere else. You turned the jury and saw the faintest buzzing around them. Understandably, it was a huge case to be a part of so it made sense they’ll have some anxiety. But one juror in particular stood out. One seemed to be vibrating in his seat.
Something else was weighing on him.
He looked quickly between you and Ray, fidgeting with his hands as his leg bounced hard enough to rock him in his seat.
Your eyes closed and you sighed to yourself as you understood. Fisk had a man on the grand jury. Nothing you said would matter.
You’d already lost.

Note
may i ask what the fic about? will it be on ao3?
To answer the 2nd question first: yes, it will be on AO3! Due to the length, it likely won't get posted until some time in November or December, as a good beta read will take a while (and my beta reader is amazing, so it'll definitely be a good one!)
As for what the fic is about, I figure the easiest way to explain is to just post the summary I plan to use (though that may change):
"You ever been tired, Red?" Captain America and his allies are allowed to come out of hiding under the terms of a stripped back Sokovia Accords, overseen by a newly-rebuilt SHIELD. An agreement is struck, and four Avengers are assembled once more. Then Midland Circle Financial falls, and they find Daredevil among the ruins. Identity revealed, Matt is forced into his own agreement. But SHIELD has a hidden agenda, and it's not the only organization making its move. A long-hidden secret is slowly working its way into the light, and now the race is on to find the truth. Matt just wishes he'd never escaped from Midland Circle.
Main pairing is Matt/Frank. Main characters are: Matt, Frank, Foggy, Karen, Peter Parker, Steve Rogers, Natasha Romanoff, Tony Stark, Clint Barton, and Maggie. More 'minor' characters who still play a significant role are: The Defenders (including Colleen and Claire), Brett Mahoney, Father Lantom, and Candace Nelson.
The fic references The Defenders and all 3 seasons of Daredevil, and is generally a post-Defenders AU (and post CA: Civil War/post Spider-Man: Homecoming AU). It also has some minor references to the comics, though I take many, many liberties with comic canon for plot purposes lol.
Probably a longer response than you were looking for, but there you have it! Thank you for the ask!

Natasha ‘Nat’ Aeryn Mahoney → Parisa Fitz-Henley, Arielle Kebbel, Zoe Saldana and Gemma Chan → Human Shifters
→ Basic Information
Age: 198
Gender: Female
Sexuality: Straight
Birthday: July 26th
Zodiac Sign: Leo
Religion: Paganism
→ Her Personality Natasha is a lively person and has an energetic personality. She is always on alert, and prefers being active as opposed to just hanging around. With her upbeat and often inspiring personality, Natasha makes friends easily and attracts people from all walks of life. She has a way with words and an uncanny ability to motivate others. Natasha can be very successful and happy in any profession that requires communication skills and understanding of people. Which makes moving and starting new careers very easy for her. Natasha has a notable leader personality with a high need for security, a sense of justice and spiritual development. She is the youngest triplet but has always led her sisters in every way possible. Natasha is also sensitive and self-conscious. She is quick to take someone within her heart with a deep need to feel loved and wanted.
Natasha is passionate about all her relationships. She tends to be whatever they need; a friend, mother, sister, protector, counselor, provider, professor, defender, etc. It is easy for her to consider friends as her family. Natasha has many friends of all shapes, sizes and species. She will take the things shared with her to her grave. Just like her relationship with Sirius. It took him over a year for him to discuss his pack on a personal level with her. She has not shared any of her knowledge with her sisters or anybody else. She has her secrets and feels confident that she will never tell anyone; unless their lives are in danger and then she will be willing to give enough to save them. This feeds into her fiercely overprotective side. She can become aggressive and hostile in nature when wronged or if those she considers family is wronged. Once her loyalty is lost, she will be rude and unapologetic, wanting whoever hurt her to feel her pain.
→ Her Personal Facts
Occupation: Lawyer
Scars: None
Tattoos: Depends on Shift
Two Likes: Learning and Naturalism
Two Dislikes: Abusers and Rude Tourists
Two Fears: Cleithrophobia and Never getting married
Two Hobbies: Reading and Triathlon
Three Positive Traits: Active, Spirited, Passionate
Three Negative Traits: Compulsive, Self-Indulgent, Secretive
→ Her Connections
Parent Names:
Katina Popov (Mother): Katina and Natasha are close. They have a regular mother-daughter relationship. They talk nearly every other day on the phone. While Katina, Nikolai and Natasha’s brothers are still in Russia, Katina has visited her in Nashville multiple times. The only time they seem to disagree is when it comes to Natasha’s love life. Katina knows about her relationship with Sirius and has continuously expressed her need for grandchildren.
Nikolai Popov III (Father): Nikolai and Natasha did not bond until Natasha was older. Nikolai was always away or working. It wasn’t until Natasha, Annika, and Galina planned to leave Russia, did Nikolai take more of an interest in them. He taught them how to take care of themselves away from home. He did not want them to leave and be taken advantage of. They do not talk as much but Nikolai still asks for reports on Natasha and her sisters.
Sibling Names:
Galina Mahoney (Sister): Galina is one of Natasha triplets. Galina, Natasha and Annika have a close relationship. They do everything together and share all of their shifts. It's rare to find them not posing as triplets or sisters. Natasha does not love or care for one sister over the other. There are some days where she cannot tell herself a part from Galina or Annika. Galina and Annika have both moved to Chicago with Natasha. Galina has taken a job as a correctional officer at an all women's prison. Natasha is worried that the job may be too stressful for Galina.
Annika Mahoney (Sister): Annika is one of Natasha triplets. Natasha, Galina and Annika have a close relationship. They do everything together and share all of their shifts. It's rare to find them not posing as triplets or sisters. Natasha does not love or care for one sister over the other. There are some days where she cannot tell herself a part from Galina or Annika. Galina and Annika have both moved to Chicago with Natasha. Annika has taken a job as a police officer at the local police department. Annika has started making friends away from Galina and Natasha which has never happened before. Natasha is unsure how she feels about it but has chosen to encourage Annika newfound friendships.
Nikolai Popov IV (Brother): Nikolai is Gennady’s twin and Natasha’s younger brother. Nikolai and Gennady were annoying growing up but as adults, Natasha has grown to love her annoying brothers. Nikolai has married and their families get along great. Nikolai and his wife have yet to have children while they travel the world; enjoying life before settling down to start a family and a career.
Gennady Popov (Brother): Gennady is Nikolai’s twin and Natasha’s younger brother. Nikolai and Gennady were annoying growing up but as adults, Natasha has grown to love her annoying brothers. Gennady works in a lab, specializing in genetic engineering. While Gennady has not married yet, he has adopted orphaned human shifters. Their parents had once frowned upon it but spoiled their 7 grandchildren rotten. Gennady is currently in the process of adopting anyone.
Dola Chellingworth (Sister): Dola is Natasha’s youngest sibling. Dola was born while Natasha, Galina and Annika were in Nashville. She married a man she met while at university. Natasha has met the Englishman a few times and sees him in the background when she and Dola speak. Natasha does not like him but he makes Dola happy. Natasha is waiting to settle in Chicago before inviting them to move closer and possibly join the Chicago clan.
Children Names:
None
Romantic Connections:
Sirius Cobic (Boyfriend): Natasha met Sirius 7 years ago via a mutual connection. He was in Chicago while she was in Nashville. They would text, talk and video chat for hours. There was not a day that went by where they were not in some form of contact. In the past 4 years, they have met a few times in person and have vacationed together too. Natasha was planning on ending their relationship if Sirius refused, again, to take their relationship to the next level. Sirius asked for her to move to Chicago. Natasha is hoping that it does not take as long for him to propose or for them to start a family.
Platonic Connections:
Churchill Darling (New Friend): Nat has heard a lot about Churchill and is eager to meet him. She thinks they may have crossed paths before but is unsure.
Vincent Kane (New Friend): Nat has heard and saw Vincent in the background while speaking with Sirius. Recently, Vincent has done her background check and interviewed her for the lawyer position in Chicago.
Lillian Pickford (New Friend): Nat was given both Lillian and Adelaide names for her new position as a lawyer. Lillian has kept in contact with her via email and has already invited her out for lunch and possibly dinner with her family.
Arthur ‘Art’ Milligan Jr. (New Friend): Just like Vincent and Churchill, Nat has heard alot about Art and has also heard his voice in the background while speaking to Sirius. Sirius has shared his concerns about Art’s magical connections and Annika has offered to help in any way she can; mostly out of curiosity.
Winston Abioye (New Friend): Winston tried to flirt with Natasha on her first day but she quickly told him she was with Sirius. He seemed shocked and asked her for any stories she was willing to share. He seems pleasant enough.
Adelaide Blanchett (New Friend): Nat was given both Lillian and Adelaide names for her new position as a lawyer. Adelaide was kind enough to give Nat a call welcoming her as a new lawyer. Adelaide has kept in touch over the process, Nat and her sisters are eager to meet her.
Montgomery Wilders (New Friend): Nat has heard of Monty and knows about his relationship with Adelaide. She remembers Sirius asking her for advice when he first took in the young couple.
Robert Fischer (New Friend): Just like Vincent and Churchill, Nat has heard alot about Robert and has also heard his voice in the background while speaking to Sirius. Lately, Nat has noticed Sirius no longer talks about him and was shocked when she noticed a familiar name running for mayor.
Inez Sparks (New Friend): Inez is another name Nat has been hearing from Sirius. She is excited to meet her and thinks they’ll get along well. Nat and her sisters aren’t strangers to need to play certain roles for people they consider friends.
Douglas Gish (New Friend): Douglas has also played a role in her hiring process. He seems friendly and has taken an interest in Galina.
Hostile Connections:
Raul Santiago (Strong Dislike): Natasha knew Raul in Nashville. They had some of the same warlock and witch connections. It was easy becoming friends with the cross country teleport; especially since she used him to deliver a few things to her parents and siblings. Sadly, Raul ghosted Natasha without reason. She tried to get in contact with him multiple times without any luck. She knows he lived in Chicago before they stopped talking and is unsure if she should seek him out or let bygones be bygones.

Part 4 of my Black and Biracial actors in the Russell T Davies era of Doctor Who:
So, Gridlock, we have Lenora Crichlow as Cheen and Natasha Williams as the 'pharmacist'.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The onto Daleks In Manhattan we get Hugh Quarshie as Solomon, best known in the UK as Ric Griffin in Holby City. He also appeared in Star Wars as Captain Panaka.
Tumblr media
In 42 Vinette Robinson as Abi Lerner. Tumblr probably remembers her as Donnovan aka Sherlock's number 1 hater.
Tumblr media
Then Blink we get one of my personal favourites, Michael Obiora as Billy Shipton, with one of the best quotes ever:
Tumblr media
And Louis Mahoney as elderly Billy Shipton. Another fun fact: Louis Mahoney had appeared previously in several Doctor Who stories in Frontier In Space and Planet of Evil, under John Pertwee as the Third Doctor and Tom Baker as the Fourth Doctor respectively.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then we get Utopia, we have Chipo Chung as Chantho who is of half-Zimbabwean of Mberengwa origin and half-Chinese descent and this isn't the last time Chung is in the show. Additionally, Neil Reidman as Atillo.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And that's it for Series 3. A lot of the other episodes except from the Human Nature/Family of Blood center other members of the Jones Family. And of course another Trinity Wells cameo in The Sound of Drums.
Tumblr media
Series 4 coming up!

here is the key to making me fall in love with a superhero narrative.
community.
obviously angst and the identity-porn, i-work-alone sole savior of the neighborhood/city/universe can work.  im particularly fond of the angst aspect, because it can be pretty delicious sometimes.
but goddamn, especially in marvel and dc, with how many superheroes ther are lying around, there is no excuse for going it alone. no excuse for not calling someone for help, or waving as you swing past, or picking up ticks and trips, or having dumb groupchat.
creating a sense of community among people feels so warm.  reading about being alone, the buffy-esque “i am the law” narrative, can be cathartic; like a really good tragedy.  but one after another after another is really really depressing.  what I always really want is for people to have friends, to have people like them.
cause, you know.  that’s what we all want, in the end.  and on a more personal level, the idea that people who just want to use their abilities to help can band together, and bond, and thrive, makes me have hope.
that’s part of why into the spiderverse was AMAZING.  All these other spider-people have their intro about suffering and tragedy and being alone; but not miles.  Miles Morales, breath of fresh air and heir to the narrative that he is, ends the movie with “and I’m not the only one.”
he creates a sense of community where he stands by irrevocably claiming his family in the face of kingpin, by helping and hanging with the other spider-people and not standing for their self-sacrificing bs, by walking on the sidewalks among the people, laughing and joking and giving babies fist bumps.
(it’s also why that spark in the mcu died after ‘the avengers.’  or maybe a little later, maybe after ‘the winter soldier.’  because the feral cat assholes in the mcu never called each other family or cared about each other day to day or lived in the same tower together, never even called one another for help.  its so depressing. movie after movie after movie of self-righteous isolationism, ugh)
like.  okay, the black widow run that phil noto did art for was a solo thing, totally focused on natasha and her jobs/character growth/etc.  but she didn’t live in a bubble, and she wasn’t afraid to ask for help.  she runs into clint and daredevil in the day to day, and takes missions with the howling commandos, and calls wolverine (laura kinney) for help on her mission when she needs someone angry.  she is a part of a community that she can reach out to, and that reaches out to her in turn.
which doesn’t even get into that amazing trope, that most often pops up in spider-man movies, where the literal, physical community that heroes protect protect the heroes back.
that’s what i want, always.  that’s how i would write it if i could, every time.
and i’m not the only one.  here’s some marvel verse recs that do this well:
for the superhero community:
Inimitable Verse, by deniigiq on ao3. uhhh holy shit, a monster of a spin on the iconic Team Red trope.  vaguely mcu ajacent. Peter Parker comes out of semi, grad-school-inspired retirement to a city in need and a rash of copycats who have risen to the challenge; he calls his old pals Wade Wilson and Matt Murdock to help him put things to rights, and makes a new team along the way because hell yes. 10/10, would recommend.  author does some excellent stuff with the mental burden of being a superhero, too, and how having a community/support system helps.
give us an our father, by deniigiq on ao3.  another classic.  wade wilson assembles an odd team composed of the punisher, falcon, hawkeye, the winter soldier, and elektra to go rescue matt murdock from enemies unknown.  some more willingly than others.  deniigiq has a plethora of good marvel content for you if you want to go through it, and a lot of it has that community bug i’m talking about.
Inside Her Ruined Body, by OctaviaPerverell on ao3.  a fem!tony stark mcu post-civil war series where Toni goes around rebuilding the avengers and recruiting some bby!avengers along the way.
brandywine421 on ao3 has a bunch of defenders fic where they actually, you know.  like each other, and call each other, and are friends.  I just burned through them last week because they’re all delightful. rice krispies is a particularly good example of this, if you want a starting point; it’s a post-mcu-snap fic.
Claire Temple’s Home for Wayward Superhumans, by words-writ-in-starlight on ao3.  In which word gets around about Claire Temple, mostly because she’s always going to help vigilantes who fall into her path, and they sometimes help her back.
my hero, your pariah (the future is now), by words-writ-in-starlight on ao3.  I’m particularly fond of starlight’s steve rogers, who in this (spoilers) gets into a fight with a sexist asshole in ch1 and calls his superhero friends to escort women to the entrance of a clinic in ch2.
for the real, physical community trope:
Maggie Fitzgerald and the Saltwater Drip, by antistar_e on ao3.  A Spider-Gwen au of TASM verse, and literally in top five favorite fics i’ve ever read.   Gwen (vague spoilers) interacts with different communities in new york in a meaningful way, and learns a little about privilege along the way.  Her adventures in mask with MJ’s theater company are goals.
Battle Plans, by prettybirdy979 on ao3.  Daredevil gets his ass saved by the nurses at Claire’s hospital
(A City Full of) Helping Hands, by aloneintherain on ao3.  Peter Parker Spider-Man swallows a gas bomb and incites a city-wide search to save him.
Last to Know, by whitcry9 on ao3. Brett Mahoney’s attempts to get a decent description of daredevil are hilariously deterred by the denizens of hell’s kitchen.
if you have recs like this, please please PLEASE let me know, i’m always looking

Glided Roses (In A Sea of Envy a Name Other Than Sweet)
read it on the AO3 at https://ift.tt/2CkpJ3i

The loud sound of her dog barking and the strong voice of Olivia Benson was the first thing the brunette woman, Amelia Mansfield, heard as she woke up from her deep surprisingly dreamless sleep. She let out a lengthy yawn before she huffed as she knew she wasn't going to able to get anymore sleep with her personal alarm clock that came in the form of her three month old Siberian Husky.
"Give me a minute, Buck," Amelia mumbled to her dog as she threw the covers off of her face and twirled her body to the side, so she was now facing her wooden bedside table. She sighed quietly when she noticed the silver chain that held two rings. One was a greenish blue color that was a family ring from her past life, and the other one was a simple engagement ring from her dead fiance that she had gotten during her tour in Afghanistan over ten years ago.
However, that part of her life was all in the past. She changed her ways four years ago and got her life on a good track, thanks to the one and only Tony Stark and Natasha Romanoff. "What time is it?" Amelia questioned out loud as she moved her eyes towards the ceiling instead of looking at the two things that connected her to her old life.
"It is nine twenty five in the morning, Ms. Mansfield," the familiar voice of the artificial intelligence, J.A.R.V.I.S., answered with his calming but loud tone.
Amelia's green eyes instantly widened at the answer she received before she swiftly threw the covers off of her body and jumped right out of the bed while she exclaimed under her breath, "no, no, no. I can't be late today!"
Amelia had barely shoved her loosely fitted gray shorts down her muscular thighs and slipped on a black knee length pencil skirt before she heard her cell phone ringing loudly throughout her bedroom. Amelia quickly rushed towards her bed while she zipped up her skirt before she grabbed the device and slid right on the touch screen as she already knew who was calling her. "Fog, I swear I'm on my way," Amelia promised as she rushed over to her dresser and slipped on her rose gold Rolex that she had gotten as a graduation present when she had finished Columbia Law School.
"Are you sure about that?" Foggy Nelson questioned with amusement in his voice, "if that is true, then why do I hear the Law and Order theme song and your dog barking?"
Amelia rolled her eyes at the brunette on the phone before she glanced over at her husky, who was staring at her while he barked. The brunette woman sighed lightly before she headed towards the kitchen with her loyal companion following closely behind her. "Alright, I'm a little late," Amelia confessed as she held her cell phone between her right shoulder and ear while she poured food into the small red bowl for her very hungry and spoiled dog.
"I swear, between you and Matt, I don't know how you guys have ever survived life," Foggy commented with a small chuckle.
Once Amelia had fed her dog, Bucky, she fast walked back into her bedroom and made her way towards her large walk-in closet. She took off the blue New York Yankees shirt and switched it for a blue silk blouse. Amelia then tucked the top into her black skirt before she muttered into her cell phone, "I'm not that late, Franklin." She glanced down at her wrist before she continued, "I still have at least twenty-five minutes until we have to meet the realtor."
"Actually, you have five minutes," Foggy corrected the brunette in a guilty voice. "You and I are going to bribe a cop first," he explained before he complained with a groan, "and please don't start calling me Franklin again. You know I hate it."
Amelia ignored her friend's complaining about his name. She had heard it all through law school and she didn't plan on stopping now. Instead, Amelia told Foggy, "Brett is going to kick your ass someday."
"Oh, please," Foggy muttered carelessly before he stated, "that is why I'm bringing you. Brett likes you."
"That's because I don't bring his mom cigars," Amelia corrected Foggy as she slipped a pair of black heels over her feet before she spotted a pink box on the ground. She remembered she had received it yesterday but never got around to opening it. So Amelia grabbed the box off of her carpet and carried it with her as she made her way into the living room. She sat on her couch and placed the box onto the coffee table along with her cell phone after she had placed it on speakerphone.
Amelia then opened the pink box and pulled out a black leather purse, that was surprisingly heavy. She smiled in appreciation as she was used to getting presents lately after graduating law school. However, as she was looking over the purse, a small piece of paper inside the pink box caught her attention. Amelia sat the purse aside before she opened the small note and began to read -
I hope you like your gift and good luck on your first day as a lawyer!
                                                                                                                                                                                                           xoxo P.P.
Amelia shook her head with a small smile before she opened the purse and noticed that it was filled with everything she would need. A matching leather wallet, a hair brush, a small bag of her favorite makeup, a set of pens, and a couple of notepads. However, Amelia soon noticed that there was something else inside that she didn't recognize. It was a black case. She pulled the case out of her purse and noticed a red and black spider on top that looked very familiar. Amelia then slowly opened the case before she rolled her eyes immediately when she noticed a .45 caliber handgun along with another piece of paper.

"AMELIA!" Foggy shouted which caused the brunette to jump out of her thoughts along with almost dropping the loaded weapon. "Did you fall asleep again?" Foggy questioned with annoyance ringing throughout his voice.
"No, I'm on my way, Foggy," Amelia told the brunette lawyer before she quickly pushed the weapon into her purse. She then slipped the black purse over her right shoulder before she jogged out of her large apartment and headed out for the day.
"Well, hurry," Foggy ordered before he exclaimed in a singing voice, "or your favorite lawyer and best friend is going to give your coffee from your favorite shop to the next person I see that just so happens to be right outside your fancy apartment building."
"Oh? Is Matty with you?" Amelia questioned teasingly as she gave an elder woman, Mrs. Jackson, a small wave and a smile before she exited the building and instantly spotted the long haired man, who was holding two coffee cups and a pink bag.
"I hate you," Foggy told his female friend once Amelia was standing directly in front of him before he ended their pointless call and slipped his cell phone into the pocket of his eighty nine dollar navy blue suit.
Amelia grabbed her caramel macchiato with a shot of espresso from the styrofoam container before she uttered with a cheeky smile, "you know you love me, Fog." She then took a large sip of the one thing that keeps her awake before she pointed her head down to the pink bag and commented teasingly, "I didn't know you were going for a new fashion statement, Franklin. But I like it."
Foggy rolled his eyes before he explained as they began to walk down the busy streets of New York, "it's for Bess."
Amelia shook her head with a small chuckle before she told the brunette man, "if Brett wants to kick your ass this time for giving Mrs. Mahoney cigars, then I'm just going sit back and watch."
"Hey! It's not my fault the woman knows her cigars," Foggy exclaimed as he defended himself before he added, "besides, we need him if we're ever going to get any cases for the firm."
"Speaking of the firm, have you woken sleeping beauty yet?" Amelia wondered. Matt Murdock, the third lawyer in their tight knitted group, was very notorious for being late. Amelia guessed it was because of his loss of sight. However, she swore Matt is faster and has better balance than she and Foggy combined.
The brunette man shook his head as he took his cell phone back out of his suit pocket and stated, "I was just about to do that," before he mumbled, "God knows I have to be the alarm clock for two grown adults."
"Don't act like I've never pulled you away from the bar while you were drunk off your ass and took care of you," Amelia countered with a chuckle before she grabbed Foggy's hand and pressed the speakerphone button before she let go and listened to the dial tone.
Foggy rolled his eyes before he heard the sound of their sleepy best friend mumble out a small hello. "Good morning, sunshine!" Foggy exclaimed obnoxiously loud.
"What time is it?" Matt questioned tiredly from the other end of the phone.
"Half pass get the hell up," Foggy told his fellow lawyer before he ordered, "let's go. We gotta meet the real estate agent in twenty."
The line went dead silent for a moment before there was a distinct sound of someone moaning, and not even a second later, Foggy was in interrogation mode as he fired out questions, "what was that? Was that a moan? Do you have somebody in bed with you?" Foggy then paused as he thought before he continued with the questions like the true lawyer he is, "the paralegal? Is it the para over at, never, I don't want to hear about it." Foggy shook his head before he changed his mind once again and asked like he was apart of a gossip magazine, "no, I do want to hear about it! What was she like?"
"Violent," Matt mumbled tensely.
Foggy shook his head in disbelief before he stated, "I gotta get the blind thing going. It's so unfair."
"Seriously, Fog," Amelia uttered with a small chuckle, "you definitely need new moves if you want to act like your blind to pick up women, my friend."
"A-Amy! H-Hi!" Matt exclaimed embarrassingly that he had listened to Foggy talk on and on about the nonexistent paralegal while the brunette woman was listening to the whole conversation. Matt definitely needed to have a little talk with his male best friend. He felt like an ass. She probably thinks I'm a player and bad at sex, Matt thought.
"Good morning to you too, Matty," Amelia greeted with a small chuckle.
"As much as I would love to listen to this amazing conversation with an embarrassed Matthew Murdock," Foggy interrupted with a sarcastic tone before he told the aforementioned lawyer, "but we have a cop to bribe."
"Ah, Foggy," Matt trailed off awkwardly when he heard the criminal act in his friend's statement.
"Kidding, NSA, if you're listening," Foggy exclaimed loudly as if the large government company was recording every word he was saying. "But seriously," Foggy continued as he told Matt, "we gotta go bribe a cop."
"Don't worry, Matty. I'll keep him in line," Amelia assured the man on the phone before Foggy swiftly ended the call.
"Keep me in line?" Foggy questioned in disbelief as he slipped his cell phone back into his suit pocket. "Why would I need to be watched?" He wondered as his brows furrowed in confusion.
Amelia rolled her eyes as she questioned right back, "did you not hear what just came out of your mouth, Franklin?" She chuckled before she stated very slowly so Foggy would understand, "you're bribing an office of the law. You know, that thing we swore to abide by."
Foggy only shrugged his shoulders carelessly before he suddenly countered, "well, you are too!" He pointed his finger at Amelia with his eyes narrowed as he continued, "maybe you are the one that needs to be watched."
"I'm not the one bribing with cigars," Amelia stated before she added with a smirk, "I'm just an innocent bystander walking down the street." However, before Foggy could even open his mouth to argue, the brunette woman spotted the police officer that they needed to have a chat with. "Brett," Amelia greeted the brown eyed man with a bright smile. "It's so good to see you again," she expressed once the police officer brought her into a tight hug.
"It has been a while," Brett Mahoney commented before he informed the new lawyer once he greeted her with a small hello, "Mama's been wondering when you'd be coming to dinner again." Out of the three lawyers, Amelia has always been Brett's favorite, despite basically growing up with Franklin "Foggy" Nelson. After Amelia and Brett pulled away from their embrace, the officer faced the male lawyer with a light glare as he uttered boredly, "officer of the law. Defense attorney. We're supposed to be enemies."
"Why don't you ever greet Amelia in this hostile way you got going on right now?" Foggy complained as he pointed his finger between his fellow lawyer and the man he knew from his childhood.
"Amelia doesn't get on my nerves every second of the day like you do, Nelson," Brett told the male lawyer as he crossed his large, muscular, and equally as imitated arms over his chest.
"Good point," Foggy mumbled before he shook his head and stated, "besides, we've been enemies since we were four, Brett, so let's not blame it on career choices." Foggy then got serious as he began to try to convince Brett to help them out as he explained, "also, I'm not a particularly good defense attorney, so helping us is like helping yourself."
Brett glanced over at the brunette woman before he turned back to Foggy with a raised eyebrow as he questioned, "so, are you saying Amy isn't a good defense attorney either, then? Because if you are, I'm going to have to kick your ass like I did on the school yard." Brett had always been protective over Amelia ever since he met her in Josie's four years ago, where they became fast friends.
"Give him the bag. Give him the bag," Amelia told Foggy hurriedly as she knew the police officer was dead serious. She had always been close to the Mahoney family ever since she started law school and became friends with Matt and Foggy, and from there; she started going to Hell's Kitchen frequently and met Brett.
"Oh!" Foggy yelped as his eyes widened before he quickly pushed the pink bag into the police officer's chest and informed him, "these are for Bess!"
The brown eyed officer of the law glanced between the two defense attorneys before he took a quick peek into the pink bag. He shook his head once he realized what it was before he looked up at Foggy and pleaded in annoyance, "please stop giving my mom cigars."
"I told you," Amelia sung teasingly in a small whisper to her fellow lawyer. She knew Brett would have something to say about the cigars, especially since they are for his elder mom.
"What?" Foggy questioned innocently before he told both Amelia and Brett, "she'll outlive us all." Once he realized the police officer wasn't going to hit him for giving his mom cigars, Foggy began his speech he had been preparing all morning, "look, I'm not asking you to do anything immoral. Just give us a heads up if something, you know, interesting walks through the door."
Brett stared at the male lawyer for a moment before he stated irritatedly, "you're right. It ain't the careers."
"Thanks, buddy!" Foggy cheered as he fist pumped in the middle of the New York streets in excitement for their potential first client.
Amelia shook her head with a small chuckle before she pulled the police officer into a hug and praised in a whisper, "thank you for this. I owe you one."
"You can start by coming over tonight for Mama's homemade chili," Brett told the brunette woman with a small smile before he turned around and began to make his way through the busy streets to protect the city.
"How in the world do you do that?" Foggy questioned in astonishment. "You haven't even known him that long!" He complained with a pout.
Amelia shrugged her shoulders lightly as she and Foggy turned around and began to walk down 50th street to the office space they were hoping to rent out. "I'm just a lovable person, Nelson," she explained with a smirk.
"W-What?" Foggy gasped with his eyes widened as he instantly paused in his step along with ignoring all the angry people that walked around him. "I'm a people person!" He shouted before he quickly jogged to catch up with the giggling and equally as amused woman.
                                                       ***
It was another twenty minutes before Amelia Mansfield and Foggy Nelson were welcomed into a gray building by the blonde realtor to look at their potential office space. Amelia already didn't like the woman since she was late when she had specifically told them a few days ago that she would leave if they weren't on time. But Amelia kept her mouth shut as she knew Foggy and Matt really liked the space.
"You've got a reception area, a conference room and three offices," the realtor told Amelia and Foggy as they slowly moved around the pale green office space. "Corner suite has a view of the Hudson," she added before she turned to face the two lawyers and uttered in amusement, "you can flip a coin to see who gets it."
"Actually, there is thre-" Foggy began to tell the blonde woman but was soon interrupted by the third lawyer in their newly built firm.
"Amelia will be having the corner suite," Matt Murdock stated loudly in an easy tone as he announced his arrival into the room. "I don't need a view and I don't think Foggy will mind," he explained.
Amelia watched in amusement as the realtor's pale face turned bright red before the blonde woman quickly apologized, "I'm so sorry." She shook her head as she tried to fix her mistake, "I didn't mean to-"
A small timid smile rose onto Matt's lips as he interrupted the woman's rambling and uttered politely, "of course not."
The realtor chuckled awkwardly before she decided to start over. "Susan Harris," she introduced herself in a strong and confident voice as she held her hand out to the partner she hadn't had the chance to meet, "Midtown Property Solutions."
The lawyer with the red sunglasses quietly sat his briefcase onto the ground next to his black shoes along with leaning his walking stick against the wall before he also introduced himself, "Matt Murdock."
Amelia walked over to the realtor and whispered into her ear before she moved across the room to stand next to Foggy, "he can't see your hand, sweetie."
Foggy stifled a laugh when he heard what Amelia had said before he told Matt with amusement clearly in his voice, "she just curtsied. It was adorable."
Matt chuckled lightly both at the brunette lawyer he calls his best friend and the nervous realtor before he commented to the blonde woman, "well, it's nice to know chivalry isn't dead." Matt then grabbed his walking stick from the wall and questioned like the polite Catholic boy he was, "Susan, would you mind walking me around the space?"
"Of course," the realtor quickly answered before her nude heels clanked against the plain gray linoleum floors as she made her way towards Matt's side and stated, "it would be my pleasure."
Foggy looked over at Amelia when the blonde woman focused all her attention on Matt before he pointed his fingers to his eyes as he mouthed, "blind."
Amelia rolled her eyes as her friend was trying to prove a point that he needed to try to act blind so he could pick up women. "No skills," Amelia mouthed to the brunette with a smirk which caused Foggy to roll his eyes right back at her.
"As I was telling your associates, the office was barely touched by the incident, which is why it's on the market already," Susan began to tell Matt as she slowly moved around the room with the blind man holding lightly onto her upper arm, "the neighbors weren't so lucky."
Amelia couldn't help the small smirk that rose to her pink lips, since she was apart of 'the incident'. Amelia liked to call it saving New York's ass from aliens and from the trickster, Loki. "Is that what everyone named it?" Amelia wondered curiously as she couldn't help herself, "shouldn't it to be called something more exciting when the Avengers saved us all?"
"You weren't even in the city," Foggy mumbled with an eye roll.
Oh, how wrong you are, Foggy Nelson, Amelia thought as she remembered every second of the destruction of New York while she was in the very center of it. However, Amelia had told Foggy and Matt that she was in Italy for spring break since it all took place during the short holiday they got during law school.
"Well, people in Hell's Kitchen wouldn't exactly call it saving when our city was almost wiped off the map because of what they did," Susan uttered with an attitude.
"I guess you got me there," Amelia uttered in amusement before she focused her green eyes out the window along with Foggy, who had joined her. She knew she shouldn't start anything with the realtor when they have been trying to find a descent office space in Hell's Kitchen for a while now. But it was the truth. When Loki tried to take over Earth, it did almost ruin every single building in Hell's Kitchen. Amelia got lucky, her unofficial adopted brother built a luxurious and advanced apartment building in the city, since she didn't want to move back to Manhattan.
"Owner figuring the delightful view of cranes and scaffolding?" Foggy questioned once he faced the realtor instead of the less than interesting view from the windows. He shook his head and stated, "feels like we're getting pre-incident prices."
"They are a quarter of what they used to be," Susan told the brunette man as she crossed her slim arms over her green and white polka dot blouse. "Hell's Kitchen's on the rebound, Mr. Nelson, and in eighteen months, you won't be able to rent a broom closet at this price," the realtor continued as she tried to convince the group of lawyers.
Amelia didn't enjoy the tone the woman had been using, so she decided to watch her sweat a little bit. She glanced down at her cell phone, like she was reading a message, before she looked up at Susan and stated, "well, you know, that's all good and well. But I just received a text message from Tony Stark, you know Iron Man, and he said a place just opened up that is three hundred less than this place and it just so happens to be Midtown Property's competition."
"U-Uh w-we can knock off three months rent and a hundred off from the recently agreed price," Susan quickly uttered as she flipped nervously through her paper work. She couldn't allow Manhattan Discovery to take another one of her listings. They would go out of business and she would be out of a job!
"Perfect," Amelia praised with a condescending smile. She looked over at her fellow lawyers as she wondered, "so, what will it be, boys?"
"We'll take it," Matt told the realtor with a simple nod of his head while he grabbed a hold of Amelia's arm when she stopped next to him, before the two began to slowly walk out of the corner suite office.
Foggy chuckled awkwardly as he quickly followed after his two fellow lawyers, who appear to have no issue with the building, before he told Susan, "we will talk about it. Because we're not sure we can afford even this palace, unless we make som-"
"What our associate means is that we would love to rent out this lovely space," Amelia told the realtor with a charming smile as she interrupted Foggy and gave him a pointed look. They couldn't mess this up when every other office building in Hell's Kitchen was charging double than what they wanted to pay. Amelia did agree to pay more than half since her adopted brother always made sure she was taken care of and plus the money she had made in her past life, but Matt and Foggy both said it wouldn't be fair to her.
"No!" Foggy quickly yelped as he definitely didn't agree with Matt and Amelia, "we won't even be able to afford this place if we don't make some changes to our current clientele policies."
"Amelia, me, and our partner are having some disagreements over the direction of M.M.N. Associates," Matt stated before he pointed towards himself and Amelia as he explained, "we believe we're here to defend the innocent."
"And I believe the innocent includes everyone not yet convicted of a crime," Foggy emphasized his side before he shot his fellow lawyers a glare as he reminded them, "you know, as the law states."
Matt shrugged his shoulders lightly before he told the blonde realtor, who was in the center of the ranting conversation, "he tends to use fancy terminology."
"And my partners fail to recognize that as defense attorneys, we're never gonna be able to keep the lights on, waiting on a horde of innocent souls to stumble into our loving arms," Foggy stressed with a loud huff.
"Boys, we can agree to disagree right now, because I'd really like to have one client and we can't do that without an office," Amelia told Matt and Foggy before she turned to face the blonde realtor and clapped her hands as she uttered with a polite smile, "so, where do we need to sign?"
                                                       ***
It was about five and a half hours later before Amelia and her two fellow lawyers were finally finished with moving desks, chairs, and file cabinets into M.M.N. Associates, their very own law firm. Amelia was extremely excited to have her own company with her best friends. It was a nice feeling of normalcy.
"We're finished up here, Ms. Mansfield," a member of the moving company called Manhattan Helpers told Amelia as he knocked on the door of her corner suite office.
Amelia looked up from where she was placing stacks of journals into her desk drawer and spotted Scott, who she had met plenty of times when she used to live at the Stark tower during law school. Tony would always use Manhattan Helpers when he or Pepper were buying and moving things. Amelia grabbed a fifty dollar from her wallet before she handed it to the man as she praised, "thank you so much, Scott."
Scott took the cash silently with the nod of his head before he suddenly remembered something. "Oh, by the way. My boss said there is a package for you inside of the filing cabinet," he informed the brunette lawyer.
Amelia's brows furrowed in confusion as she questioned, "who's it from?" She didn't even know who would put something in her things when she barely hired Manhattan Helpers only a few hours ago.
Scott grabbed a scrunched up piece of paper from the back pocket of his jeans before he read the horribly written note, "boss said it's from a, uh, Mr. Zeppelin."
Amelia mentally rolled her eyes. Of course it would be him. He definitely was obvious with the name Mr. Zeppelin, after the rock and roll band, Led Zeppelin. Amelia focused back on the man in front of her as she gave him a tiny smile and uttered, "thanks again for the help today, Scott."
Scott tipped his old gray hat and stated, "my pleasure," before he turned around and made his way out of the building to his men.
Once the door was closed behind the mover, Amelia went towards her black filing cabinet and opened it, where she noticed a red and black box. She then lifted the lightweight box and carefully sat it onto her desk. Amelia thought about opening the container, but remembered who it was from, so she decided to close her blinds encase something extravagant was inside.
Amelia slowly lifted the lid of the box once she made sure no one could see inside of her office before she furrowed her brows as she noticed it was just a small crystal globe of the world. Amelia placed the globe onto her desk with a twitch of her head before her finger accidentally pressed onto the top of the globe and not even a second later, a bright blue light began to shine onto the pale green wall.
"J.A.R.V.I.S.?" Amelia whispered as she recognized the bright blue hologram from her time in Manhattan and in her home.
"Good afternoon, Ms. Mansfield," the artificial intelligence greeted the brunette woman in his familiar calming voice.
However, before Amelia had the chance to ask J.A.R.V.I.S. another question, she was soon interrupted by her cell phone ringing inside of her black leather purse. She quickly pulled the device out and answered it as she could already guess who was calling her. "Seriously, a globe, Mr. Zeppelin?" Amelia questioned in amusement as she took a seat at her desk.
"Well, you wouldn't take the Stark phone and I can't install my programming into your office since you made the stupid rule of no one knowing that you know the awesome Tony Stark," the aforementioned man told the woman he saw as a sister.
Amelia sighed before she told Tony, "I want a normal life, you know that. Besides, you already have J.A.R.V.I.S. in my apartment that you built for me so I wouldn't have to live, like you put it, in a rat nested apartment in actual hell."
"Well, that's just stupid," Tony grumbled, "like it's stupid you don't just move back in with me and Pepper. You could get better and important clients!"
"It's Foggy and Matt's home, Tony," Amelia explained before she stated, "anyways, I don't want to be in the news like I would be if I worked in Manhattan." She glanced at her door before she whispered, "I don't need them finding me."
"You don't have to worry about them when you have the whole Avengers by your side," Tony assured the woman before he wondered, "why don't you just tell your nerd friends about you fighting in the great war of New York?" Tony boasted, "I would be bragging."
"You already do, Tony," Amelia told him with a small chuckle before she repeated her reason, "I just want a normal life." Amelia sat in silence for a moment as her fingertips brushed against the fabric of her new leather purse before she told the billionaire, "hey, tell Pepper that I love the purse and could you also tell Natasha to stop trying to recruit me."
"PEPPER! AMELIA LOVES THE PURSE YOU BOUGHT WITH MY MONEY!" Tony shouted to his strawberry blonde girlfriend before he told Amelia, "and you can tell Natasha yourself, because I may or may not have heard that she and a certain guy with one eye will be showing up for a visit soon."
"Jesus," Amelia muttered in annoyance. Ever since the Avengers came together to fight Loki, Director Fury has been trying to get Amelia to become an agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. again, like she was during law school. However, that wasn't something she wanted to do anymore. Yeah, it was fun and exciting to save the world in a suit that Tony made, but she would rather be in the courtroom saving people that way.
"Language," a familiar voice suddenly spoke which caused Amelia to swiftly look up and noticed that Matt and Foggy were standing in front of her doorway. The brunette then quickly looked over at the globe and sighed in relief once she realized that J.A.R.V.I.S. had shut himself down.
"Listen, I have to go. Thank you for the congratulations, uncle Anthony," Amelia praised falsely as she knew she needed to end the phone call, so Amelia used the code words that she and Tony had came up with when she couldn't talk about certain Avenger things, which happens to be just Tony's full name.
"You are very welcome, young lady," Tony stated loudly with an obvious smirk on his face at the chance to embarrass Amelia, "dammit! I left my teeth in the-"
However, before Tony could finish his sentence, Amelia quickly ended the call. She faced her two best friends once she placed her phone down and apologized, "I'm sorry about that." She waved her hand carelessly as she explained, "it was just my mom's brother. He wanted to congratulate us for the new firm."
Matt nodded his head in understanding as he gave the brunette woman a gentle smile and said, "send my thanks."
"Enough about your old uncle," Foggy exclaimed before his face took shape like an excited toddler on Christmas morning as he asked the one question he had been waiting to ask for hours, "so, do you really have Iron Man's number?"
Amelia rolled her eyes before she uttered sarcastically, "oh, yeah. Totally, Foggy. He's my number one contact." Even though it was the truth, Amelia couldn't let them find out about her secret identity and that Tony Stark is basically her family.
Matt twitched his head to the side as he noted, "your heartbeat didn't rise," before he wondered curiously, "so, you do have Iron Man's number?"
Amelia glared at Matt, even though she knew he couldn't exactly see the look in her eyes. She always hated when he tried to listen to her heartbeat. "Don't use your hearing powers on me, Matthew," Amelia commanded before she told them with a sigh, "I don't have Iron Man's number. I just know how to control my heartbeat because of the Marines."
"WHAT!?" Both Matt and Foggy yelped at the shocking revelation of their best friend.
Amelia mentally cursed herself. She forgot she never told them about how she used to serve in the military. But that was something she wanted to keep in her past, which was connected to the old silver ring that was on the silver chain on her bedside table. Amelia decided she would lie, as bad as she hated to do it.
Amelia waved her hand in the air carelessly before she explained, "when I was getting my bachelor's degree in political science, I got the opportunity to watch and learn from the soldiers on how to be biased and show no emotion during the interview process." It wasn't a total lie, as she did learn that when she was stationed in Afghanistan.
The small office grew silent as Amelia waited impatiently for her best friends to say something - anything. She needed them to believe her or everything she and Tony had tried to keep under wraps would slowly begin to unravel. After another agonizing slow minute passed, Foggy finally spoke in a surprisingly excited tone, "you are so lucky! We are going to crush the court room with you by our side!"
Amelia held the sigh of relief she wanted to let go as she knew Matt was definitely focusing on her reactions right now, even though she told him not to. The Murdock lawyer had always been like that ever since Amelia met him at the beginning of law school.
"We certainly will if we ever get a client," Matt finally stated.
However, before either of the other two lawyers could utter a single word, the sound of a cell phone ringing ran through the small office. The brunette female realized it was her device, so she quickly grabbed it off her desk before she glanced down at the screen. Once she saw who was calling, Amelia gave her best friends a pleased smirk before she answered the call, "please tell you are about to be my savior right now."
The person on the other end of the phone, Brett Mahoney, chuckled wholeheartedly and stated, "I think I just might be," before he explained, "I got a homicide. Female suspect found at the scene. It definitely qualifies as interesting like you wanted."
Amelia nodded her head as she listened before she asked, "have they charged her?"
"Assistant DA hasn't made the call yet," Brett informed the brunette woman about what he had heard about the case.
The Mansfield woman decided that it could be interesting if they haven't even charged their suspect when she was at the scene of the crime. Amelia opened the drawer of her desk and swiftly grabbed a blue notepad and a black pen before she asked the police officer, "what's the name of the lucky gal?"
"Karen Page," Brett responded as he remembered the name of the blonde suspect.
Amelia wrote down the two words before she praised New York's finest with the nickname she had always called Brett since they became friends, "you are the best, Honey."
"Yeah, yeah, yeah," Brett mumbled before he told the lawyer, "I'll come find you so you can get the rest of the details." However, before Amelia could open her mouth to respond, Brett quickly added, "Mama's chili. Dinner. Tonight," before he swiftly ended the call.
Amelia chuckled lightly at her police officer friend as she knew she would have to show up now since he didn't give her a chance to say no to dinner at the Mahoney house. But she didn't mind. Amelia has always loved Bess. She was a sweet old woman, who always treated Amelia like her own.
The brunette woman then remembered the news she got when she felt the eyes of her friends drilling on the side of her head. Amelia quickly grabbed her notepad, turned it around, and slammed it onto her desk as she told her fellow lawyers, "we just got a client, gentlemen."
It was silent for a moment before Foggy exclaimed in disbelief, "holy shit." He looked into Amelia's green eyes with a large grin as he cheered, "hell yeah!" The whole office was then filled with sounds of excitement as the three lawyers laughed and celebrated that they would be getting their very first client for their newly made law firm of M.M.N. Associates.
                                                       ***
Amelia walked with her head held high as she and her two best friends moved through all of the police officers, who glared at the three defense attorneys, to find their potential client. Amelia learned to act like you are the biggest badass in the room and you will always succeed. Well, really, that was just a thing her college roommate at Columbia would say, but it always made Amelia feel so powerful that she could conquer anything.
The three lawyers walked through the narrow hallway that belonged to the interrogation rooms, where Brett Mahoney easily handed Amelia the police report on the female suspect as he passed them. Amelia quickly slipped the brown folder into her black purse before the three lawyers continued their way down the dark hallway until they reached the interview room that Brett had texted her about; room four.
There outside of interview room four stood a straight edge detective that looked like he hasn't smiled in decades. "Mansfield. Murdock. Nelson," Amelia stated before she pointed her head towards the door with a raised eyebrow like she was waiting for the detective to challenge her.
The detective slowly looked Amelia's body up and down before he finally opened the door and walked through it without a single sound. The female lawyer rolled her eyes once the detective turned his back to them. However, Amelia is used to the looks when she's a strong woman challenging a man. It was just how society works.
"Okay, can we please take the handcuffs off the 110-pound woman?" Foggy questioned the two tall detectives with an annoyed huff once the three lawyers had walked through the metal door and spotted the tiny blonde woman with tears streaming down her pale face.
The emotionless detective, Christian Blake, ignored the brunette man's order as he faced the criminal and questioned, "Miss Page, can you tell me who these people are?"
Amelia slammed her black purse onto the metal table before she told the detective with a glare, "yeah, it's called we're her lawyers."
"Could you please uncuff our client and give us the room," Matt spoke politely while he lightly placed his hand on the lower part of Amelia's back and gave her blouse covered back two taps with his point finger. It was his way to warn her to control her emotions. He always thought she got too emotional with things, but in reality, it was just how Amelia dealt with arrogant men. She didn't serve in the Marines with a squad full of men just to be disrespected by one.
The dark haired detective stared at the blind lawyer for a moment before he grabbed the small silver key from the pocket of his suit. He then undid the tight handcuffs from around the blonde woman's hands that was chained to the ice cold table.
Amelia gave the man, or in her mind - the hard ass, a charming smile and praised, "thank you for your help, detective."
Once the large heavy door buzzed as it closed behind the arrogant detective and his silent partner, Foggy turned to Amelia and whispered as quietly as he could in the small room, "I think we already made an enemy in the police department."
Amelia rolled her eyes as she whispered back, "he's an ass. I was never going to like him." She didn't care that some detective didn't like her and she definitely wasn't going to act fake for that arrogant man.
Matt cleared his throat as he interrupted the conversation between his two best friends, even though Matt was amused by Amelia's attitude towards the detective, who really was an ass in Matt's opinion. "Miss Page, my name is Matt Murdock," he introduced himself before he added, "and these are my associates, Foggy Nelson and Amelia Mansfield." Matt pointed towards the table before questioning, "do you mind if we sit down?"
However, the blonde woman, Karen Page, only stared at the lawyer with glasses over his eyes as warm tears continued to stream down hers. Karen didn't know who to trust after what happened tonight. And now these strangers just suddenly pop up out of nowhere. So, Karen decided to stay silent. If she didn't say anything then she couldn't get into anymore trouble, right?
"She gave a vague shrug," Foggy whispered to Matt before he shrugged his shoulders himself as he commented, "I say we go with it."
The three lawyers decided to go with it, like Foggy suggested, and silently slid into the hard metal chairs across from the blonde suspect before Matt began to speak again, "we understand you're in some trouble. We, uh, may be able to help."
Amelia grabbed the folder Brett had gave her and the blue notepad from her purse along with a black pen before she questioned politely, "Miss Page, could you please explain to us what happened tonight?"
However, when the blonde woman still only stayed silent, Amelia decided to see if her facial expressions would give her away. Luckily, it only took the ex Marine about thirty seconds before she noticed the distrust that shined in the woman's blue eyes. Amelia realized that they needed to earn her trust before they could go any further.
Amelia gave the blonde woman a gentle smile and explained, "we just want to know your side of the story, so we can see if we can help you." She then opened the police report and found the deceased name. "A one Daniel Fisher was found in your apartment," Amelia told the woman as she started up the conversation to get Karen to open up.
"Who happens to be the victim of a homicide, and currently, you're the only suspect, Miss Page," Matt continued where is fellow lawyer left off as he tried to convince the woman to allow them to help her.
Karen looked between the three people in front of her for a moment before she questioned suspiciously, "who the hell are you guys?"
"We are the people who are trying to keep you from spending the rest of your young life in prison, Miss Page," Amelia told the suspect as she laced her fingers together on top of the police report.
"Who sent you?" Karen fired out another question as she narrowed her blue eyes in wariness.
"No one sent us," Matt answered simply.
"So, what?" Karen questioned in disbelief, "you're just a couple of good Samaritans? And today's just my lucky day?" She didn't believe that someone could just come help her without knowing something or wanting something. That wasn't how Hell's Kitchen worked.
"I bribed the desk sergeant with a box of cigars for his mom," Foggy told the blonde woman proudly.
"Not something you should admit to someone you want to save from jail time," Amelia muttered to her long haired friend.
"Our practice is relatively young, Miss Page, and we are aggressively pursing new clientele," Matt explained as he noticed Karen was looking between his fellow associates with furrowed brows and they certainly didn't need to get off topic right now. They needed to hear what happened from her. However, Matt couldn't help himself as he told his male best friend, "you really gotta stop giving Bess cigars."
"That's what I keep telling him," Amelia told Matt before she added with a small smirk as she glanced over at Foggy, "Brett is going to kick his ass someday."
"She likes to smoke," Foggy exclaimed as he defended himself, "it's a free country."
"So, how long have you been practicing law?" Karen wondered as her blonde brows furrowed while she tried to keep up with the strange back and forth conversation between the three people that wanted to help her.
Matt stared straight ahead as he thought over the question before he asked his fellow associates in a small whisper, "what time is it?"
Amelia lifted her right hand up and glanced down at the rose gold Rolex on her wrist before she informed Matt, "it's six fifteen p.m."
The Murdock lawyer breathed out a small sigh before he finally answered Karen's question, "about seven hours."
Foggy scoffed before he trailed off, "well, if you go from when we passed the bar."
"I was going from when we got our own desks," Matt explained his reasoning to Foggy.
Foggy nodded his head as he agreed, "oh, then, yeah." He faced the confused Karen and smiled as he reaffirmed, "seven hours."
Karen looked between the two men and the brunette woman in disbelief before she questioned in astonishment, "you've never done this before?"
"If you were to allow us to help you prove your innocence, then yes, you would be lucky number one," Amelia explained with a soft smile. They needed for Karen to want their help, so she would smile and be the sweetest person alive if it got Karen to trust them.
Foggy nodded his head as he added, "technically. Yeah."
"W-Well, I-I don't... I don't have any money," Karen stuttered nervously after she thought everything through while she avoided eye contact for the first time since she met the lawyers.
Amelia mentally cheered as she knew Karen was warming up to them if the thought of paying for their service was on her mind. However, before Amelia could assure the blonde woman that it wouldn't be a problem right now, Foggy decided to mess that all up.
"Well, it was lovely to meet you, Miss Page," Foggy stated as he began to stand up from the hard chair but was soon stopped by Matt's strong grasp on his wrist.
The Murdock lawyer cleared his throat loudly as he waited to hear the sound of Foggy sitting back down before he assured Karen like Amelia was planning on doing when she was interrupted by their associate, "you don't have any money and we don't have any clients. Maybe we can help each other."
Amelia decided to push it a step further as they needed badly to hear her side of the story if she was going to be their client. Amelia reached over the table and lightly placed her hand over Karen's and spoke softly, "we just want to help you and understand what happened tonight. So, please, could you tell us how you know Mr. Fisher?"
Karen stared into Amelia's green eyes for a moment before she nodded her head once and swallowed thickly as she finally decided she could trust them. "We worked together," Karen answered.
Foggy sighed heavily as he realized his fellow associates wanted to listen to the blonde's case. He then swiped his red notepad from his brown shoulder bag and questioned with the least amount of excitement unlike the emotions he was feeling when they had first received the case from Brett, "and your place of employment?"
"Union Allied Construction," Karen stated before she told her position at the company, "I'm a secretary." She glanced between the three lawyers before she began to explain further into how she knew the man, "Daniel worked downstairs in Legal." She shook her head as she muttered, "I-I d-didn't know him very well. But he was always nice, you know?" Karen paused as she licked her chapped lips before continuing, "but it's hard to meet people in the city, so I asked him if he would have a drink with me."
"You asked him?" Matt questioned as he tried to get the full detail of tonight.
Karen nodded her head before she told the lawyers as her voice broke in sadness, "like I said, he was a nice guy." She took a shaky deep breath before continuing her story about what happened, "we met at the Three Roads bar, on 49th street. We had a few drinks, and the next thing I remember is waking up on the floor of my apartment covered in blood. His blood."
Amelia silently wrote down every detail the blonde woman said into her blue notepad. It would be a difficult case for them, seeing as the deceased was inside Karen's apartment with her covered in his blood. There was just something that Amelia couldn't understand. Why wasn't the police charging her yet when they have the body, the weapon, and the suspect? It just didn't add up.
"I'm not stupid," Karen exclaimed as she slammed her pale hands on the metal table once she noticed the silence and expressions from the lawyers, "I know how that sounds." Karen's blue eyes shifted between the three people in front of her as she pleaded her case as tears streamed down her face, "but I'm telling you, we met at the bar. We had a few drinks. And I don't know what happened after that. It wasn't me." Karen begged desperately as sobs left her body, "please. Please, you have to believe me. I didn't kill him."
Amelia and Foggy silently shared looks between each other before their fellow lawyer voiced exactly what Amelia was thinking, "I believe you, Miss Page."
Amelia knew that Matt did what she hated, he listened to Karen's heartbeat to see if she was telling the truth. She knew it was a good tactic for a lawyer, but in Amelia's experience, it wasn't always reliable like in her case. However, Amelia just had this gut instinct that this woman wasn't lying.
                                                  ***
The three best friends and lawyers were relaxing inside of Matt's small office after they were kicked out of the interview room by Mr. Hard Ass as their time had expired for the night with their client. It had been an exhausting day for all three lawyers, which caused for ties to be loosened and heels thrown off as they all thought over their very first case.
"I'm friends with Gary Feinstein in the DA's office," Foggy told his fellow associates as he spoke up for the first time since they've been in their office building while he tossed his childhood baseball up in the air as he walked around the room, "I'll give him a call first thing in the morning to see where their heads are at." Foggy shrugged his shoulders as he thought out loud, "I'm guessing they're gonna puff out their chests, but they have to know murder two's a risk." He then turned towards Amelia and Matt as he predicted what will happen, "we end up at manslaughter, we get the right judge, maybe she's out in five to ten."
Amelia shook her head and stated, "we're not taking a deal." There was no way Karen did it. Amelia knew liars and criminals, but that wasn't who Karen was. The only thing she was guilty of was of being scared and afraid of something or someone.
Foggy groaned loudly and mumbled, "no," before he explained to the female lawyer, who was sitting on top of Matt's desk with the aforementioned man standing to the side of her with his hands settled on his hips, "this is why they have deals, Melia. So, the straightforward cases don't waste everybody's time."
Matt shook his head before he told Foggy, "I agree with Amy. I don't think she did it."
Foggy looked at the other two people in the room like they were completely crazy. What was there to think about when everything was laid out in front of them? "She's the soul suspect," Foggy stated as he began to explain his reasoning for wanting to take whatever deal the DA suggests, "she was found at the scene, covered in blood, with the murder weapon and no defensive wounds." He chuckled lightly before he uttered, "if they offer anything it'll be a gift, and we will take that gift. We do not want this to go to trial."
Matt lifted a finger to prove his point as he told Foggy, "they don't want this to go to trial either."
Amelia nodded her head before she expressed what she had been thinking since they found out about the case, "something sketchy is going on. It should be an open and shut case." She rose an eyebrow at Foggy as she questioned, "so, why haven't they charged her with all the evidence they have?"
Foggy rose his arms in the air as he shrugged his shoulders before he guessed what was taking so long for the police to close the case, "they have twenty-four hours. Plus, it's the weekend. They're gonna take every last second to collect the evidence before they move."
"They've got the evidence," Matt argued, "you just laid it out yourself." He shook his head and stated, "this is a good arrest, Foggy. We should already be reading it in the papers. There's something not right about this case. I can feel it."
Foggy instantly stopped tossing the baseball in the air when he heard Matt's choice of words. He then turned to the male and deadpanned, "you can feel it?" Foggy sighed before he uttered, "alright, I'm just gonna say this once, and we can move on." He paused as he waited for any objections before Foggy told Matt, "you don't necessarily show the best judgment when beautiful women are involved."
"How would I even know if she's a beautiful woman?" Matt questioned amusingly.
Foggy shrugged his shoulders as he responded, "I don't know. It's kinda spooky, actually. But if there's a stunning woman with questionable character in the room, Matt Murdock's gonna find her and Foggy Nelson is gonna suffer."
"And what about Amelia Mansfield?" The aforementioned brunette questioned as she rose an eyebrow at her ranting friend.
Foggy furrowed his brows as he thought for a moment before he snapped his fingers and exclaimed, "obviously you are just as bad as Matt over here! Every time you walk into a room, men swoon after you!"
Matt shrugged his shoulders as he agreed with his male best friend tensely, "he's not wrong." Matt had noticed that plenty of times when Amelia walked into a room by the fast heartbeats of men.
Amelia shook her head with a chuckle before she uttered with a cheeky grin, "it's not my fault men can't help but fall for my charm."
Foggy rolled his eyes at Amelia and her cocky attitude before he turned to Matt and praised, "thank you! At least someone gets it!"
"But," Matt announced as he interrupted Foggy's gratification, "I need you to back Amelia and I, anyways."
"Ugh, fine," Foggy groaned as he decided to just agree with his two fellow lawyers. There was no way to get around them. He always hated when they agreed with each other, because he would never win when they did. "Alright, fine. Let's start with the obvious, then," Foggy began as he went through the case in his head so they could plead Karen's innocence, "if she didn't do it, then who did?" He shook his head with a sigh before he stated, "we're dead in the water if we don't give them an alternative."
Matt nodded his head and muttered, "agreed."
"We need to take another run at our client," Foggy declared, "she may not be guilty, guys, but that doesn't mean Miss Page is telling the truth."
Amelia nodded her head and stated, "that's what I've been thinking," before she stood up and slipped her black heels over her feet and added, "but that is going to have to wait until the morning." She brushed her skirt down and explained, "it's late, guys and I have a bowl of Mrs. Mahoney's chili with my name on it."
"I should be the one getting homemade chili," Foggy grumbled as the three lawyers exited Matt's office and headed towards the receptionist area before he added in annoyance, "I'm the one that brings her cigars."
Amelia chuckled as she placed her leather purse over her shoulder before the three lawyers began to slowly exit M.M.N. Associates. "I'm just a lovable person, Nelson," she repeated what she had said this morning before she promised, "but I'll bring you a bowl in the morning, you big baby."
"You better," Foggy grumbled as they reached the dark streets of Hell's Kitchen. "I'll be waiting and dreaming of the chili while I drink my sorrows," Foggy joked before he waved goodbye to Amelia and Matt and then began to make his way down the street to their favorite bar, Josie's.
"Don't get too drunk!" Amelia shouted to the brunette man with a chuckle before she and Matt began to walk in a comfortable silence the opposite way to Matt's apartment which was the same way to Amelia's next destination.
"Do you want me to walk you to the Mahoney's?" Matt questioned softly after a couple of minutes had passed as they grew closer to his apartment building.
Amelia shook her head and stated, "no, it's okay. It's not that far anyways. Just a couple of blocks."
Matt lightly grabbed onto Amelia's arm as he pulled her to a stop before he confessed, "I don't like you walking down the streets alone at night. You know how dangerous it can be."
"I'll be fine, Matty," Amelia told her friend with a small smile. If only Matt knew she could protect herself from anyone that was thrown at her. But Amelia would rather keep that a secret as long as she could. Instead, Amelia just mentioned something Matt already knew, "besides, I've learned how to handle my own when I did that short program in the military."
Matt stared in Amelia's direction as his dark brows furrowed slightly before he muttered, "alright. But give me a call when you get there."
"I promise, you worrywart," Amelia chuckled before she pulled Matt into a tight hug and whispered, "good night, Matty."
"Be careful, Amy," Matt ordered as he squeezed her waist before he turned around and headed towards his apartment building with the sound of his walking stick slapping against the concrete sidewalk.
Amelia waited until she couldn't see Matt anymore, before she began to make her way towards the Mahoney house for dinner. She and Matt always had this close friendship, that most people would think was more than friends. But that was far from the truth. Amelia and Matt always been best friends since freshmen year of Columbia Law School - along with Foggy. Besides, Amelia would never take the chance to see if there's more between them when she was hiding things about herself. She didn't want Matt to end up hurt because of her past.
                                                       ***
Amelia pressed her right thumb on the small touch pad that was right underneath the doorknob of her apartment door, that Tony had installed because the apartment building was always being broken into since it was in Hell's Kitchen, before she entered with a tired sigh. Amelia was pretty exhausted from her first day as an official lawyer, but the dinner with the Mahoney's definitely helped. She always loved Bess' home cooking. They made Amelia feel like she had a real home and a family.
Amelia made her way through her dark apartment and headed into the kitchen before she quietly found the refrigerator and placed Foggy's chili beside a half full jug of milk. However, as Amelia closed the door to the appliance, she soon realized she hadn't heard a single sound of Bucky's usual barking.
Amelia's body automatically went into soldier mode as she silently placed her black purse on the ground by her feet and slipped out of her black heels before she grabbed the loaded and already cocked gun from the hiding place by her sink. She then swiftly twirled her body around and pointed the weapon straight ahead, where she now noticed two shapes sitting at her kitchen table along with the shadow of her dog in one their laps.
"I know you ain't about to fire that gun, Ms. Mansfield," a strong but familiar voice ran loudly through the very dark apartment.
"What the hell," Amelia muttered while she rolled her eyes as knew only one person that voice could belong to. "Lights," Amelia told J.A.R.V.I.S. and pointed the gun towards the ground with a slacked arm. Once the lights shined through the apartment, Amelia could finally see the faces of her close friend, Natasha Romanoff and the director of S.H.I.E.L.D., Nick Fury with her three month old husky in his hands.
Amelia placed the black handgun onto her kitchen table before she questioned, "do you know I have a secure keypad on my door?" She glanced between Natasha and Fury with a raised eyebrow as she stated, "it means you don't break in."
The woman with the short orange hair shrugged her shoulders easily and said, "you should know by now that none of Stark's electronics will stop a spy." Natasha stared into Amelia's green eyes with seriousness in her own before she busted out laughing. She then jumped up from the black chair and rounded the table before she pulled the smiling Amelia into a hug. "It's so good to see you," she mumbled truthfully.
"You too," Amelia muttered into the hug. She hadn't seen the spy since the Avengers came together to protect Earth over six months ago. Once Amelia pulled away, she glanced between Fury and Natasha before she questioned, "so, what are you guys doing here?"
Nick Fury only unfolded his leather coat covered arms and pulled out a black and blue file folder from his coat and placed it onto Amelia's table along with a blue pen without a single word.
Amelia rose an eyebrow at the director, but when she only got silence from the emotionless Fury and a smirk from Natasha, Amelia opened the file and began to read. However, she only read about two sentences before she closed the file and uttered simply, "no."
Nick Fury glared slightly at the brunette woman as he interrogated, "and why the hell not?"
Amelia rolled her eyes as she responded with the same answer she had been using for about less than a year, "because I'm done being a vigilante, superhero, spy, assassin, or whatever you want to call it. I'd rather help in the courtroom."
"Cut the bullshit," Nick Fury commanded, "come to D.C. and be an agent like you were before you decided to join the damn law."
Amelia rolled her eyes in annoyance once more before she compromised, "listen, I was with the agency all through law school. You knew once I graduated I was done. However, I will come back if the world ever needs the Avengers again. I can promise you that."
"Fine," Nick Fury snarled and grabbed the file from the table like has done for months before he made his way towards the front door. "If you ever change your stubborn ass mind, the door is always open for Sergeant Viper," he told Amelia before he slammed the door behind him. The Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. could crack the toughest agents but Amelia was one he could never get to join the agency again, which pissed him off every single time. But he would settle for a part time agent, as he still has Natasha and The Captain.
"Who pissed him off?" Amelia questioned in amusement as she walked into her kitchen with her husky following along and Natasha's combat boots slamming against the title floor.
"You," Natasha muttered with a small chuckle. "You know how he is. He hates when he doesn't get his way." She shrugged her shoulders and commented, "I'm pretty sure if you were anybody else, he would kill you himself."
Amelia couldn't help but laugh as she knew that was the truth. Nick Fury could get as mad as he wanted with her, but that was as far as it would go. Amelia didn't know if it was because she was a good agent or because he knew she would always come back. It was just who Amelia was. Once a soldier, always a soldier.
Amelia reached under her cabinet and pulled out the bottle of alcohol she and Natasha always drank when they got together; Russian vodka. "How about a drink before the road?" Amelia questioned with a smirk as she knew Natasha never could say no.
"What the hell, Amelia. I've been here for over two hours waiting and you had this baby stashed," Natasha exclaimed teasingly before she grabbed a glass from the counter, poured it half way of the clear liquid, before she swiftly downed it. "Oh, damn," Natasha moaned before she uttered, "I really wish you would just come along. It could be fun. You, me, and Cap."
Amelia groaned as she stated, "I'm not going back, Tasha." She just wanted a life of normalcy. All her life she had been a soldier of her father, a soldier of the military, and a soldier of S.H.I.E.L.D. She wanted to be just a boring ole lawyer.
Natasha shrugged her shoulders as she uttered, "can't say I didn't try." She poured herself another drink before she sighed, "I should be going. We got a big mission in Washington. Hostages at Lemurian Star."
"Please don't give me any details," Amelia begged as she knew she would fall right back into the agency. She was born to serve, so she always hated saying no to a cause.
Natasha chuckled as she uttered, "alright, alright. I'm done. I know you want a normal life. I've tried plenty of times." She placed her hand on Amelia's shoulder as she told her, "but there's no getting out of this for people like us."
Amelia gave Natasha a small sad smile, "yeah, I know." She shook her head and uttered, "but right now, that's what I'm doing." The two women walked to the front door before Amelia pulled her friend into a hug and ordered, "call me when you get back in New York."
"I will," Natasha told Amelia once she pulled away from the hug.
"And call me if you need any help with the mission," Amelia added.
Natasha shook her head with a chuckle and stated, "yeah, no. Being an agent is like a drug, you can never get enough." Natasha gave the brunette woman a smile as she continued, "so, no. I'm not giving you a call. I think we can handle a mission without you."
Amelia pouted before she stated, "yeah, you're right. Besides, I'm a lawyer now." She gave her friend one last smile as told the spy, "tell Steve I said hi."
Natasha smirked, "I will," and ordered, "don't cause too much trouble while I'm gone," before she headed out of the apartment for the last time for a while and quickly went to catch her ride to Washington, D.C. with Director Fury.
Amelia waited until she couldn't see her spy friend anymore before she silently closed the door to her apartment and headed towards her bedroom with her husky following quickly behind her. Amelia was too tired to even shower, so she just slipped out of her pencil skirt and fell onto her bed with a tired huff.
She closed her eyes for a second before she heard the scratching of her dog on her silk sheets. Amelia chuckled before she turned on her side and picked Bucky up, which caused the dog to swiftly snuggle up to Amelia's side. "I know, buddy, I'm tired too," she muttered with a yawn. It only took the lawyer about two minutes before she was snoring softly as the thought of her first client was on her mind.
The life of a lawyer was very tiring and new for the brunette woman. It was different from being a soldier or an agent but Amelia liked the idea of a simple life. But how long would her life stay simple?

Good Evening City of Clans,
As we discussed on Discord, due to inactivity, we have decided to end the Starter Prompt early. On Friday, February 19th at 9 am CST we will be ending the Starter Prompt and dropping threads. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause muns and muses. Our dash has threads that have been open and ongoing since December. These threads are beginning to overlap. Starter Prompt Recap
Below is a recap of what happened during the unfinished Starter Prompt.
Bess
Bess found out about vampires. Dan killed a Comic book store owner and Bess caught him in the act. Dan eventually convinced her to help him clean up the mess. He promised her they would see again before running from the freshly cleaned-up scene.
Bess has possibly found out about magic users. She found Lyra on the scene of a deadly B&E (breaking and entering). Lyra followed a spirit that was begging for help when Bess showed up. Lyra explained to Bess that she thought she heard someone in the backroom calling out for help before eventually teleporting away.
Bess found out about the supernatural. Inez was trying to cover up a hyena attack when Bess showed up on the scene. The owner of a Comic Book store was bitten and in the process of changing as Inez tried to come up with a cover story for Bess. During this Bess was attacked by a shifted hyena whom Inez shot dead as a result. Bess was bleeding from the head when Inez reported that there was an officer down and that they needed an ambulance. Inez stayed on the scene to explain things to the responding human shifter cop.
Ainsley
Rhiannon found Ainsley as a fox and took her home to heal her. She believed her to be a real fox and was simply wanting to help out an injured animal. Ainsley shifted back to her human form once Rhiannon had her healed and Rhiannon offered her a change of clothes and a ride back to her home.
Patch found a fox being attacked by a wild coyote and saved her. He brought her home and cared for her thinking she was a real fox. He eventually called on Judson to help him and it was an awkward moment when he found out his new pet, Maid Marian, was actually Ainsley from Clan Nimble. Judson volunteered to take Ainsley home as Patch wrapped his head around having bathe a grown woman in her shifted form.
Peter saved Ainsley from a coyote attack. He caught the color of her white eyes earlier on and knew she was a nimble shifter. He talked her into shifting back to her human form but Ainsley soon passed out after. Giving her his jacket, Peter took her to the hospital and contacted Clan Nimble. He stayed long enough to give a police report and retell the story to Percy before leaving.
Conrad
Lyra was found by Ben’s ghost and led to where Conrad was laying. She decided to help him out of the Underground, and this led to Conrad finding out that Lyra could speak and see Ben, who had died over a year ago. Lyra explained that her powers allowed her to see and speak with the spirits of the dead.
Conrad was found unconscious and naked by Kris, who ran to Jaxson and Sam, who were visiting the Underground, for help. Jaxson took charge of the situation and ordered an evacuation of the Underground. Jaxson and Sam started to feel symptoms of whatever poison that was still lingering around Conrad as they carried him out of the Underground. Kris was waiting for them when they got out and drove them to one of the safehouses.
Getta, Petra, and Sadie found Conrad unconscious and naked Underground. Getta ordered one of their magical healers to heal Conrad. They explained to Conrad what happened to him and the poisonous gas that plagues the Underground. Geta got in contact with the Human Shifter to escort Conrad out of the Underground, after having Conrad sign a waiver, acknowledging that he was not attacked by anyone Underground.
Winnie found Conrad naked and unconscious in the Underground. She woke him up with her powers and after the two realized one another were Supernaturals he trusted her enough to get him out. Conrad shifted and Winnie carried him out in her pocket. He had her drop him off not far from a safe house. After she left he scurried in and passed out again.
Kudzai found Conrad naked and unconscious in the Underground. She teleported him to her home and began healing him. After he regained consciousness, Kudzai contacted Nick who came to pick him up.
Monty
Emmett got Monty to help with his search for a dangerous witch he was searching for. She was arrested and punished by the Council. Patch and Monty are tasked with coming up with a cover-up story for the Nimbles News report and their own police and autopsy reports.
Duke was taken to Isaac. Monty did not believe that Duke had a twin brother that was the culprit. Isaac explained that Duke indeed had a twin brother and asked for the charges for the destruction of property to be dropped.
Asa was taken to Clara. Clara’s reaction wasn’t the best, therefore, Monty didn’t stick around for long and made sure to erase all evidence.
Ebony was taken to Alexus who happened to be with Grant at the moment. Monty told them of what happened that there will possibly be charges rung up against her if the animal shifter wanted.
Kudzai
Asa was injured due to Ebony but got away. He was found on the side of the road where he had fallen and was taken to the ER where Kudzai worked. She performed surgery on him and he is mending.
Zack was injured in a clan dispute. Kudzai healed Zack’s minor injuries enough to wake him up and ask a few questions before preparing him for surgery. Zack asked for his wife, Sarah, to be called and waited for her to arrive before proceeding with the procedure. Zack had a bruised liver and had to have an exploratory laparoscopic procedure to examine the extent of the damage. Kudzai surgically and magically fixed Zack’s severe blood loss, a forming infection, and a slight problem forming in his bile ducts. The procedure was successful but Zack remained in the hospital under Kudzai care for a few days. Since Zack refused to age, Kudzai, with the help of Rhiannon had to slowly heal him and make it look like he was aging to trick the on-duty human nurses.
Peter was injured in an attack by fellow wolves who were attempting to take his position. He allowed Kudzai to begin to heal him and asked that she contact Garrett Cleirigh. Who quickly teleported there and teleported Peter away. There was no discharge order and no patient, so Kudzai had to come up with a cover story, causing more tension between the two council members.
Cassandra was unconscious when she arrived. Kudzai made quick work of healing her and contacted her emergency contact Helenus. Kudzai has asked that Cassandra return for a checkup since the reasoning behind her unconsciousness was inconclusive.
Ebony
Helo was setting up new surveillance for CAMO when Ebony came out in full gear and began running after him. He eventually played it off like he was human, and swore not to tell anyone she chased him if she let him go. He is unsure if she bought the ruse or not. Ebony doesn’t fully buy Helo’s story and plans on getting security surveillance up soon. She has also reached out to her neighbors about a suspicious kid around the neighborhood that she thinks might break in; knowing they will more than likely call the cops if he shows his face around there again.
Ebony has made it aware that she wants to take over the family and went on a hunt to prove her intentions. Sam saw Ebony prowling around the younger Jackal shifters she was watching and decided to lead her off of them. This led to a chase in the park where the two women fought. Sam was able to change into her rat form and slip away from the hunter. She sustained mild injuries but declined to admit how she got them to others in her pack out of embarrassment that a hunter got some hits in. Ebony is trying to figure out what kind of supernatural the girl was. One moment she was there and another moment she had vanished. She is hoping to trail the girl in the future and find out more.
Ebony was chasing Asa on a hunch that he was an animal shifter. She couldn’t quite put her finger on it but she was guessing that he was something big and powerful by the way he moved through the trees. Ebony eventually caught up with Asa and held his attention with a crossbow pointed at his heart. She was able to do a brief interrogation before Asa attacked then gave her the slip. Asa made it to the ER with a crossbow injury and a few other cuts and bruises.
Lyra
Neaera got a recording of Lyra performing a ritual in the woods. While Lyra was able to bind the spirit but she didn’t finish her ritual due. Neaera played dumb and ran from the scene. She replayed what she got to Ray and Louis. GOLD plans on returning to the scene of the ritual to see if they can gather more information and they also plan on putting an expert group on Lyra.
Talia walked in on Lyra performing a ritual by chance. The disruption was enough for one of the spirits to escape. Talia and Lyra spent the entire night recapturing the escaped spirit. Lyra finished her ritual but it was under the close watch of Talia and Roman; whom Talia talked Lyra into calling.
Averill watched Lyra work from the darkness of the woods, randomly, but a scream from somewhere else distracted the both of them. They would later find out it was a scream from a hunter hunting down an animal shifter. Lyra had asked that Averill help her catch the elemental spirits that escaped during the short distraction for her ritual. The two formed a somewhat awkward bond while hunting down and summoning the last two spirits needed for the ritual.
Ken
Ken managed to get out of the Underground without too many consequences thanks to Arthur. He called Judson once out of the Underground and Judson teleported to his aid. Once Judson saw that it was Arthur that had helped Ken, Ken learned that Arthur was a good friend of Roman’s, who had made Ken’s work life a living nightmare.
Isabetta was unaffected by Ken’s powers. She easily picked him out of the crowd as the possible culprit which Ken confessed to and had no power over what was happening. Offering to help him out and into a Lyft or Uber, Isabetta and Ken made their way out of the underground while avoiding people who were obviously affected by his power. Ken may have given Isabetta his number and address as a thank you gesture. He also offered to get her a wine bottle filled with the blood of an aged witch or warlock with the power of her choice.
Rachel was working on her homework Underground when she noticed all of the non-vampires were acting strange. She was ready to bold, not wanting anyone to think she had anything to do with it when she nearly tripped over Ken. They met before and striking up a conversation wasn’t hard. Rachel found out that it was Ken causing all of the commotions and that his powers don't work on her. With the help of Fiona and Aleksander, Rachel was able to help Ken from the Underground and contact Simon who took Ken home.
Skylar
Skylar accidentally pulled water out of Kate’s water bottle. She witnessed the water act almost animatedly and when Skylar ran into the nearest store, Kate followed. There she was met with the sight of her long-term crush, Ryan Cleirigh. He sent Skylar away to Judson and then invited Kate up to his apartment to explain what she saw.
Skylar lost control of her powers when she found out she was locked out of her apartment building. Minsky tried to help her calm down but Skylar’s magic had the best of her. She saw Minsky as a threat and the key her magic was forming eventually turned into a knife. Minsky managed to talk her down and Skylar apologized before making a run for Judson’s shop. She explained what happened to Judson, who gave her Minsky’s number, and Skylar personally called him to apologize again.
Fenrin saved Skylar from exposing herself when she accidentally used her magic in public. He triggered a fire hydrant to go off and made his escape with Skylar. Both had heard of each other from mutual contacts caused Skylar to be more relaxed than she would have with anyone else. Fenrin offered to buy her a coffee to calm her nerves as she waited for Audo, Ryan, or Judson to return home. Fenrin and Skylar talked about their shared powers and got to know each other.
Kudzai witnessed Skylar’s accidental magic. Being older and a Council member, Kudzai was able to send a spell causing the water to evaporate. She and Skylar walked around the block before Kudzai offered to teleport inside of Skylar’s apartment. While they were walking, Kudzai was able to calm Skylar’s nerves and assure her that things like that happened all the time. Skylar has never thought about joining the medical field but they had exchanged numbers and Kudzai told Skylar to contact her if she ever wanted to talk about it.
Skylar’s magic had a mind of its own and unknowingly pulled coffee from two Starbucks cups Lyra was holding to form a key for her apartment. Lyra’s soothing and calming tone helped Skylar calm down enough to stop her oncoming panic attack. With instructions from Lyra, Skylar was able to place the coffee back into the coffee cups but insisted on buying Lyra new ones.
Michael
Asa heard about what was happening at the zoo and went to help Michael with crowd control. Michael and Asa lost sight of each other when the human shifters finally stepped in after someone tried to climb over a gated area. However, when Michael returned to the Hotel, and sought out Asa and thanked him for his help.
Clara saw Michael’s speech and the outcome on social media. She went to help but somehow the two got into a heated dispute. A few choice words were said and Michael has been avoiding Clara like a plague.
Hailey lost track of where she was and ended up in a rioting crowd that Michael was trying to talk the crowd down and keep the peace. Michael explained what was happening to her but was quickly pulled away from her by someone else.
Ebony was tracking someone to the zoo when she ran into the big crowd. Michael tried to explain what was happening to her but she clearly wasn’t buying what he was selling. Michael doesn’t know she’s a hunter but wrote down his Twitter information on a flyer he gave her. He would like to continue to pick her brain but it is only if she follows him or reaches out to him.
