365 Marvel Comics Paper Cut-Out SuperHeroes - One Hero, Every Day, All Year…
June 7th - The Valkyrie / Brunnhilde
Brunnhilde led the Valkyrior, a group of warrior goddesses who would appear over the battlefields of mortal worshippers and choose which of the fallen were worthy to be taken to Valhalla, the land of the honored dead. Brunnhilde served Asgard capably in this capacity for centuries, ending when Odin chose to no longer attend to the affairs of Midgard.
Thereafter, Brunnhilde became the prisoner of the powerful sorceress known as Amora the Enchantress.  The Enchantress used Brunnhilde’s guise to travel to Earth and psychically manipulate a group of female heroes into becoming The Lady Liberators; all as part of a scheme to destroy The Avengers.  This plot was thwarted yet Brunnhilde remained The Enchantress’ prisoner.
Later, Brunnhilde’s consciousness escaped confinement and possessed the body of a human named Barbara Norriss.  In so doing, Norriss was changed physically to resumable Brunnhilde and possessed her same powers of super strength, speed and durability.
Taking on the name ‘The Valkyrie,’ Brunnhilde assisted The Defenders in defeating the evil sorceress, Casiolena.   She remained with The Defenders for many further adventures whist also having to contend with Barbara's husband, Jack Norriss, who refused to accept that Brunnhilde and his wife were not one and the same.  The process of possessing Barbara Norriss caused Brunnhilde to experience a degree of amnesia where she forgot about her original body trapped by The Enchantress.  Periodically, Barbara’s consciousness would regain control of the body, leaving Brunnhilde with confusing gaps in her memory.
Later, Barbara was tragically killed; where upon Brunnhilde’s consciousness was returned to her original body.  Back in her own body, Brunnhilde was finally able to break free from the Enchantress’ thrall and she returned to The Defenders for further missions.  She would later act as a member of Steve Rogers’ Secret Avengers team.
In the wake of the Serpent War, Brunnhilde was charged by Odin to locate and safeguard The Serpent's eight remaining hammers, preventing them from once more being used for evil.  To facilitate this task, Brunnhilde formed a team of heroines known as The Fearless Defenders.
Following a battle with Hela, Brunnhilde traveled to Valhalla in an effort to rescue her fallen teammate, the archeologist named Annabelle Riggs.  With the aide of the sorceress, Clea, Annabelle was resurrected; although achieving this came at a cost.    Brunnhilde and Annabelle were now bonded so that the two shared a body and Annabelle’s mortal form became the new host of the Valkyrie.  As such, Annabelle’s consciousness was transferred to a limbo dimension whenever Brunnhilde controlled the body and they would switch places any time Annabelle controlled their body.
Brunnhilde first appeared in the pages Avengers Vol. 1 #83 (1970).

Let's go ahead and indulge our inner hipsters for a bit.
In the Marvel Champions card game Valkyrie isn't considered... the best. In fact, I think most players consider her near the bottom of the tier list - only keeping herself from the bottom of the list by standing on the massive, disappointing back of The Hulk.
But that's the beauty of playing non-competitive, and mostly-solo, games. We can experiment with the things competitive folks would just throw away.
And then we get to sit back, smugly, when we actually figure out how to crack her.
So Why Valkyrie?
On the surface, Valkyrie's core 15 seems fine.
She's got 3 big, direct damage cards that can get overkill.
She's got card draw that also finds minions the lean into her slayer strategy.
She's got two cards that can remove 5 threat from any scheme.
She's even got upgrades that give +4 HP and can turn her into a 4 ATK monster.
So Why NOT Valkyrie?
With all of these amazing tools at her disposal, shouldn't Valkyrie be a monster? At least a average role-player? Some characters aren't necessarily the strongest (especially in solo play) - but on the surface, Valkyrie doesn't seem like the coaster she's positioned as being.
Well, her natural stat line doesn't help anything. 1/2/1 doesn't inspire much confidence - and unfortunately also implies a couple downstream issues.
First off, 1 DEF means you're going to get smacked around. Her natural 12 HP is better than average, but you'll still need to flip down every once in a while to stay alive.
But with only 1 THW that flip down can be devastating.
Which is why it is so surprising that some of her core kit only works in Alt Ego.
And even all those good cards we mentioned above - most of them only work if you have attached your "Death Glow" to a target. This is a tempo hit, and you'll often find Death Glow is on the wrong enemy at the wrong time.
Oh yeah, and if you hit Shadows of the Past, it's basically game over. Enchantress is probably the most lopsidedly unfair nemesis in the game.
So we've got some struggles.
Tumblr media
Leadership to the Rescue
With all of this headwind, I think the best aspect to lean into is Leadership. It's already the most naturally powerful aspect. And allies help mitigate the immediate need of threat removal and defense.
But there are also a couple archetype cards in leadership that synergize in a nice, odd way with Valkyrie - and even let us stay in Alt Ego for longer.
Sky Cycle: While slapping the Sky Cycle/Honorary Avenger combo onto Annabelle Riggs isn't as good as it is with Wong, you still get to draw two additional cards per turn. This is amazing for a hero kit that doesn't have built-in resource generators.
Sneak Attack: Rapid Response is probably the best leadership card, but Sneak Attack is my favorite. This doesn't do a ton for us on defense, but getting thwart machines like Falcon fulfill their role for a fraction of the price. This card is really interesting for Valkyrie in particular because she is Asgard traited even in Alt Ego. That means you can drop absolute bombs like Heimdall and Beta Ray Bill to keep things in order while flipped down. (Pro tip: slap your backup Honorary Avenger on Valkyrie and she can sneak in Avangers allies when flipped down too).
Command Team: Command Team is kind of a natural fit for sneak attack decks anyway, but here you can get some extra value with Annabelle. If drawing 2 extra cards a turn is good, drawing 4 has to be better... right?
Band Together: I tend not to consider resource cards are cornerstones of any deck. Having more resources is good - yay! But I think two copies of Band Together are really special in this deck. Since you want to keep Annabelle on the board forever, it's easy to get the full three allies in play. And even when you're short, Sneak Attack lets you quickly get back to quorum. Band Together ends up being a great bridge to help change your quick tempo plays with Sneak Attack into more stable resource building (ie. Avengers Tower), or to turn the corner for the killing blow with "Have At Thee."
Tumblr media
Let's be honest with each other for a minute.
Valkyrie still isn't a top-level contender in Marvel Champions. Her kit has so many internal contradictions that she'll never be able to stand toe-to-toe with Dr. Strange, Captain America, and Miles Morales.
But that doesn't mean she can't be successfully built.
I think this deck is really interesting. Does it have a 90% win ratio? Nope. Not at all.
But it does feel competitive in most scenarios. And more importantly, it's fun.
So don't give up on the "also rans" of Marvel Champions. I think if you spend some time in the Island of Misfit Toys, you'll probably find something that is more fun to play with that that infinite combo Ant-Man deck... again.

A King Needs to Find Her Queen
As a bi and demiromantic transwoman, it makes me incredibly happy to see LGBTQ+ representation in media that I enjoy, especially comics. Seeing as we've gotten to see a few characters on the big screen recently, like Deadpool, Constantine, Valkyrie, Loki, Harley Quinn, and Gay Joe Russo, I wanted to talk about them and some others that I really enjoy.
Harley Quinn has just had a movie come out, so I’ll start with her. Now, she doesn’t need much introduction since she’s been about as overexposed as Deadpool. Her most common “lover” is the Joker, but in her solo series from 2000, she dumped him after encouragement from her best friend, Poison Ivy. It was heavily speculated for years that Harley and Ivy were an item. Eventually, in her New 52 series, they were revealed to be a bit more than friends. Harley invites Ivy to help her free all the animals in a kill shelter, drops a few innuendos, and they’re shown sleeping together. Before Ivy leaves, she even gives her “cute little psycho” a kiss on the cheek. Unfortunately, Harley in the Suicide Squad and Birds of Prey films hasn’t been given the bi treatment, but Ivy is established as her ex in NetherRealm’s Injustice 2 and they start dating in Harley’s HBO Max series.
Tumblr media
Next, I’d like to talk about Loki, my personal favorite of the characters I plan on discussing. Like with Harley, Loki needs little introduction. In Norse mythology, Loki had relationships with Sigyn, a fellow Asgardian, and Angrboda, a giant and the mother of Fenrir, Hel, and Jormungandr. In 2013’s Young Avengers, Loki flirts with his fellow bi teammate Prodigy, offering a New Year’s kiss, but Prodigy declines. After the Ragnarök event in the Avengers Disassembled: The Mighty Thor comics, during which the Fire Demon Surtur kills the Asgardians and the Gods are revived to continue the cycle, Loki is reborn in the body of Lady Sif and is thus known as Lady Loki. Furthermore, in the Loki: Agent of Asgard series, Loki becomes a goddess again. Luckily, the Marvel Cinematic Universe gave us both of these aspects of his personality. His gender fluidity is referenced by his TIme Variance Authority file in a promo for his Disney+ series, and he outright confirms his bisexuality in a conversation with an alternate universe Loki, who is based on Lady Loki.
Tumblr media
Now, let’s discuss the character who inspired the title for this essay: Valkyrie. Brunnhilde is the leader of the Valkyrior, Odin’s personal group of shield-maidens, but she is most known as a core member of the Defenders and eventually the Secret Avengers. After a journey to find and destroy the hammers used by the Worthy during the Fear Itself event, she is tasked with forming a new Valkyrior from Midgardian women. One of these women was Dr. Annabelle Riggs, a lesbian whom Brunnhilde forms a close bond with. Their potential as a couple is teased multiple times, with them kissing twice, but Annabelle is killed before it can progress. Clea, niece of Dormammu, helps Brunnhilde to revive Annabelle, but they are merged into one body, which complicates a potential relationship. Annabelle meets an Inhuman named Ren Kimura and they start dating, and during a moment of stress between Annabelle and Brunnhilde, Brunnhilde reveals she approves of Ren, and they come to an understanding. The MCU’s Valkyrie, who has not been named as of yet, was confirmed to be bisexual by her actor, Tessa Thompson, and will find her partner in Thor: Love & Thunder.
Tumblr media
Finally, there’s Jughead Jones from Archie Comics. Jughead is the titular Archie’s best friend. He was confirmed as asexual by 2015’s Jughead writer Chip Zdarksy, with the closest thing to sexual attraction he has being his intense love for food. His dating philosophy is even that dating deprives him of money he could spend on burgers. Zdarksy elaborated on Twitter that his Jughead was also demiromantic, which made me extremely happy, as there are no other demiromantic characters I am aware of. However, the nature of comic books makes it hard for one writer’s interpretation of a character to stay consistent when another writer takes over. Jughead always had a preference for food over romantic partners since 1941, but it took 70 years for his asexuality to be confirmed, and it might not even stay a part of his character over the next 70 years. In the heavily criticized CW series Riverdale, Jughead is in a relationship with Betty Cooper. Fans, and even his actor, Cole Sprouse, have complained about the asexual erasure in the show. Personally, I don't see why he wasn't made ace, as Zdarsky’s version of Jughead was the most recent characterization and the version featured in the New Riverdale reboot which focused on more mature storylines, just like Riverdale.
Tumblr media
Many pieces of mainstream media are severely lacking in representation, especially comics, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t any at all. I hope that I could introduce people to some characters they can feel close to. If you would like to read more about any of these characters, I recommend 2013’s Harley Quinn for Harley, 2013’s Young Avengers and 2014’s Loki: Agent of Asgard for Loki, 2013’s Fearless Defenders for Valkyrie, and 2015’s Jughead for Jughead.
