Pete didn’t want to stay anymore. Staying was dangerous. He could slip up and—

The woman prowled closer still, circling between Pete and his bike, cutting off his only escape. He shrivelled under her menacing glare.

No no no no no…!

“P-please, I d-don’t w—I don’t w-want tr-trouble, I’m-m—leaving—!” he pleaded desperately.

She leered over him, “I don’t think so. Not until you learn some respect.” Without warning or pause, she lunged forward with a flurry of punches. Stray fists caught ribs, then arms, when Pete tried to shield himself. One hit so hard that it sent his cane clattering to the ground.

Pete wasn’t sure if something in him snapped, or adrenaline finally kicked in and released him from his frozen stupor, because he suddenly lashed out with more force than he ever thought possible.

With a high, terrified cry, he slammed into her with all his might in an attempt to push her away that ended in her being flung onto the floor of the shelter.

“You fucker!” she bellowed.

In an instant she shook off the impact and was up again, and slapped him faster than he could blink. His head snapped to the side, sending him reeling. A slight dizziness lingered, but he could see another strike coming through his dazed, spinning vision. He jumped back again, leaving the cover of the shelter, and crying at the shock it sent through his foot. Dirt and rocks clacked and loosened as his heel landed just over the edge. The strong bluster drew the thin streams of pebbles away.

His assailant wore a bent grin, and with a hoot and shout, she lunged forward with a savage hook.
