Perhaps in a Dream

“Naruto…Naruto………Are you……. asleep?” Sasuke whispered to the Hokage leaning a little too heavily on his left shoulder. He was met by a snore and mumble that made him chuckle. “Seriously? Standing up?” He sighed. “Of course…You never have had a hard time getting to sleep, have you?”

Sasuke gazed over at the yellow moon just rising above the level of the Hokage’s estate with shadowy eyes. It cast his exhausted closest companion in a golden light. The glow suited him.

Wistfully, he breathed, “You don’t have a worry in the world right now. Heh. Why would you? You finally have it all: The job of your dreams, people who acknowledge and believe in you, a family, love.” His voice cracked at the word. “You just have so much love. Suppose it makes sense. You were this way even in our earliest missions. You showed compassion to the people who tried to kill you.”

“Even me. Even though I didn’t believe I deserved it. You shared your light with me and beat me out of that darkness. You were brighter than any of my fire-style. You made me-” A laugh escaped him, “...believe it.”

“Hrnghhhhmmmmmmm…. Believe it! …Y’know?” The sleeping Naruto interjected.

 “Now you speak?” Sasuke asked, baffled by Naruto’s near perfect timing.  He nudged Naruto with what remained of his left arm to make sure he was asleep, but when he didn’t get a response, he settled again. “It's .... been a while since I heard that one outta you…”

Sasuke's thoughts turned to Naruto shortly after he left the village on his path to redemption. There was a shift in Naruto then that only became more pronounced when the two of them married their wives, had children, and Naruto became Lord Uzumaki. “Why is that? Could it be you felt it too?” He wondered aloud, feeling regret hitting him like a poke to the forehead.

Sasuke’s worst enemy was himself. He had a tendency to jump to conclusions and he wasn’t sure if he was doing it then. Naruto was drooling on him though and he needed to move him. He stepped back just enough so he could use his right arm to gently cradle the Hokage as he lowered him to rest seated against the railing.

“Hn. Such a loser,” Sasuke grumbled, pacing around him to crouch instinctively to Naruto’s right. This way he could touch him.

He sucked his teeth at the intrusive thought. Why did Naruto of all people have this power over him? Of course, he couldn’t touch him; they were married men! They had families with children! 

Did that even matter? That just meant Sasuke was no longer the last of the Uchiha clan. He could focus on other things: like when Naruto’s head lolled over to the side to let out another loud open-mouthed snore and his chin rolled in a way that made him look like an oversized infant. Unflattering of an angle as it was, Sasuke only felt the uncomfortable warmth within him growing. Before him was the boy who never gave up on him because he shared his pain, the teen who fought for him when no one else would, the young man who gave him the space to seek out himself in the world, and the Hokage who still loved him with everything he had. Sasuke loved him too. He pressed his fist to Naruto’s chest and wordlessly, he was connected to him by a force only tangible to the two of them.

“Idiot,” was the only word Sasuke could muster and though he didn’t speak another word, he was sure Naruto, even asleep, got his message, “I’m not good at this. You were always better with words………I’m sorry…for everything. I still want you.” 

After that, Sasuke let his hand slide downwards. He would let his actions do the talking. It’s not like holding Naruto there was new to him. He’d helped him to pee numerous times before; he was bigger now. That was to be expected though. He also half expected to hear his own wife’s name coming from Naruto’s mouth, but he didn’t. What he did hear shocked him.

“Sasukeeee…”

Sasuke didn’t miss a beat, whispering huskily, “Naruto…”

There was no turning back now. If Naruto were to wake, then Sasuke would finish the job and take responsibility. If not, then perhaps it was best that this moment of intimacy remain a dream.
