Our newest house addition is @annemariwellswriter and we are so excited to have her join us! Anne Marie Wells (she | they) is an award-winning queer poet, playwright, and storyteller navigating the world with a chronic illness. She is a faculty member of the Community Literature Initiative, Strategic Partnership Fellow for The Poetry Lab, and Nonprofit manager for The Adroit Journal. She has received support from Capital Storytelling, the Wyoming Arts Council, and Brooklyn Poets. She was the 2021 Crow House Press Poetry Contest winner and earned the 2021 Peter K Hixson award in poetry. She was a finalist for the 2022 Emma Howell Rising Poet Award and winner of the inaugural Wanderlust Travel Book contest. She was a 2021 Wyoming Woman of Influence nominee in the arts category for amplifying the voices of the LGBTQ and disabled communities through her writing. Her poetry and prose has appeared in Ninth Letter, Platform Review, The Round Magazine, Brain Mill Press, and others. She writes to add to our shared sense of humanity, hopefully creating a more empathetic, more peaceful, and more loving world. Picnic.

Maybe one day we could have a picnic the two of us, one like in those old tv shows, i plan on preparing a basket and hitting north until i found you.

Because i could watch forever when the sunlight reflects into your brown eyes and they melt like golden rays and hearing your voice telling stories is sweeter than any strawberries i have ever tasted.

Rules, never made sense, I watch people even now, Say there are rules, But then not follow them. But shout at others, To follow them. I’ve never been a rule breaker, not really, Never been a rule maker, not really, And I don’t really admire anyone else who makes the rules, shouts about rules or avoids the rules. So really I don’t see the point in rules, not really.

~ Silent Screams ~ I curl my toes like iron clad talons A clench my fists Stiffen my body, like death And dread what comes next... I scream in silence For they will never understand the violence inflicted on my mind My thoughts are dangerous And somehow, somewhere, I have pissed them off Because now they sniff my coward's scent They hunt me down They chase me And I flee through the dark chasms of my mind I run, and run until tiredness bends me like a rusty hook - Their stamina always besting mine They corner me Eye muscles twitch Lips curl to a snarl Angry brows fall to frame glaring eyes Teeth grind Knuckles click Heads roll around vein ribbed necks They maraud forward ... And so it begins Blows rain down on my brain like a night mansoon I scream Such violence in my cries, in their blows, in my cries... In their blows But they will never hear my screams My silence is the only control I have Besides they will never understand Only smiles are understood But not the tears Never the tears After all, we never question the sun Only the rain We never ask, "when will it stop shining?
