!The Bad Batch season 3 spoilers!
Tumblr media
I'd like to share with you my feelings and opinion about the new episode of the Bad Batch. Again, I wanted to do this right after watching it but my mind had other plans... emotions I felt overwhelmed me and I needed some time to put myself together. I WAS A CRYING MESS I SWEAR! And I felt a lot.
Tumblr media
From the beginning to the very end, this episode has my whole heart. Honestly, this might be my favorite episode of season three so far, even though the previous ones were absolutely wonderful. I love Omega and Crosshair duo so much and seing their bond getting stronger means the world to me. They showed the typical brother - sister dynamic. Crosshair now looks more like himself, just like I remember him from the Clone Wars episodes. Confident about his skills, with sharp tongue and painfully honest. Despite everything he's been through and his apparent trust issues, he allows Omega to lead their small group. Of course, he adds some sarcastic comments of his own, but overall he does not question Omega's ideas and, despite his hesitation, helps her the best he can.
Batcher is so adorable and I love how she tries to get closer to Crosshair even though he is clearly offended and annoyed. This bring smile on my face.
Omega once again shows her more mature side. She's confident and seems to have taken some of Crosshair's sarcasm with her. She wants a peacefull way to left this planet and only when things get really bad, she allow Crosshair to do it -his way-.
Absolute chaos and destruction, it looks like Crosshair wants to enjoy as much freedom as he can. He's free and he won't let him and Omega get captured again. He has nothing to lose and this little girl has become his main priority. He even allows physical contact, which we know he didn't like to share at all. A gentle touch of a hand on her shoulder, ahh I love them. And the way he was called Omega's father and she confirmed it without hesitation. Crossdad is real guys, haha.
Tumblr media
But it was the ending that was so shocking to me. The way Crosshair tried to convince Omega that Hunter and Wrecker might not have survived, that so much time had passed... and she don't want to listen. She strongly believes that her brothers will come, that they will take them, save them and they can all be together, she does not accept that they may no longer be alive.
All doubts disappeared the moment I saw Marauder on the screen. Of course, in the back of my mind I had the thought that it might be a trap, but then...
Tumblr media
Omega running out of the ship with a wide smile, Wrecker shows up in the open door of the Marauder... OMG I couldn't hold back the tears. I DIDN'T EXPECT THEY REUNION SO QUICKLY. Tears came to my eyes when Wrecker literally ran to her and lifted Omega into air, hugging her tightly close to him. Our little girl could finally allow herself to show her emotions. She had been so strong for so long when she had been on MountTantiss, now she could be a child again, let others take care of her now. She's not alone anymore. Tears flowed, both from Omega and Wrecker, and from me.
Tumblr media
I love the fact that Wrecker was the first to welcome her, not Hunter. He was second. Here my tears were flowing down my cheeks uncontrollably.
Hunter wanted to find his little girl for so long... That one word "five" made my heart beat so fast. This is what happened, this is real. They were finally together.
Tumblr media
The moment Omega saw Hunter showed all her emotions. Relief, longing, fear and happiness all mixed together. Hunter practically fell on his knees with his arms open for Omega to jump into his embrace. HE FINALLY HUGS HER! The way he held her, the focus on his hands... He finally had his little girl with him, nothing bad could happen to her in his arms. When they broke apart, Omega wiped her tears and Hunter just simply smiled warmly at her. They really looked like father and daughter here, I swear. Words cannot describe how much this means to me. I felt like I was there with them in that moment.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And then the atmosphere thickened as Crosshair appeared, slowly exiting the ship. THE MUSIC HERE WAS ABSOLUTELY MARVELOUS! I have mixed feelings about Hunter and Wrecker reaction to their brother's arrival. I understand the lack of trust, but were such hateful and cold looks towards him necessary? Hunter tightened his fists, freezing in place, even Wrecker had a cold look in his eyes.
I feel that in the next episode they will have to explain many things to each other... it won't be pleasant... Maybe there will be harsh words, maybe they will blame each other for Tech's death, maybe they will never fully trust each other again. I just hope that they will be okay after all this. No matter what, they have to stick together...
And I have one little question WHERE THE KRIFF IS ECHO?! It's forth episode and we still don't see him!
Oh Force... it was a huge amount of emotion for such a short moment.

15 Questions for 15 Friends
Double tagged! by @dandenbo and @ad-astra13 --many thanks! Are you named after anyone?
Nope! My mom wanted to name me after some character from some soap opera she loved, apparently, but my brother, at the wise age of five, insisted they name me what would become my birth name haha. My chosen name is kind of in honor of that in it's own way, because it's still one of my favorite stories of my brother
When was the last time you cried?
Like an hour ago. 911 season 2, episode 8 you know what you did.
Do you have kids?
Nah, and don't want any.
What sports do you play/have you played?
I did a lot of activities as a kid, not because I was particularly athletic but because I got bored easily and they kept signing me up for them. I remember soccer, softball, dance, gymnastics... all of which I quit because 1) bored and 2) i didn't like being told what to do.
I did enjoy playing badminton in high school though, but didn't play on the team. Sports and shit like that should be for funsies when you're a kid idk, just not that competitive i guess
Do you use sarcasm?
I did and arguably still do, but I seem to have segued into puns and bad dad jokes somewhere along the way ;)
What is the first thing you notice about people?
Probably how they carry themselves/how they talk? I tend to vibe best with people unafraid to show off their sense of humor so long as that humor isn't mean-spirited
What is your eye color?
Green
Scary movies or happy endings?
I am a massive romantic and sap at heart, which apparently surprises people who know me irl haha. Give me fluff, give me sap, throw in some drama, and if there has to be tragedy it better damn well be earned
What are your hobbies?
Video games, reading, writing
Do you have any pets?
I've got a 13 year old flame-point, doll-face Himalayan who is the chattiest office buddy you could ever hope for
How tall are you?
5'2''...and a half!
...Im a hobbit
Favorite subject in school?
Lit theory
Dream Job?
Eh. Just want to be paid well and not feel so ground down, ya know? wouldn't mind doing something more community-based in the future.
Let's see, let's see...
@tiny-banana-time @theoriginalladya @dilfbuck @aleiocus @illusivesoul @urdnotflexthejedibard @solstheimtxt @bluerose5 @korblez @bisexual-kaidan-alenko @bagog and anyone else who hasn't been tagged yet and wants to participate! No pressure as always

I wasn't a huge fan of "Rick: A Mort Well Lived." It wasn't terrible, but it's kind of just...there?
For one thing, I'm not a fan of episodes of any show where the characters aren't really "them" (i.e., they're in different bodies or it's an alternate universe, like that Futurama episode where they're all animals.) I know it was still Rick and Morty, but you're not seeing them on screen. I realize that's just personal preference, though.
The concept was intriguing, but it didn't really go anywhere. Just rehashed the same thing over and over until it abruptly ended. Honestly, it reminded me of the snake episode from season four, which everyone loved and I hated, lmao. When they ended, I was like "...that's it?"
Justin Roiland did an amazing job with Rick's voice, though. Damn. He didn't have a ton of lines, but his dialogue was a standout. Justin put so much emotion into his voice. He also did a good job making all the parts of Morty sound unique--like yeah, they have the same voice, but they're distinct enough that it doesn't sound like one guy rambling for twenty minutes.
We've also had two episodes in a row that reference "Mortynight Run" from season two, which is actually one of my favorite episodes. The show's done a decent job of referencing past episodes without leaning on nostalgia ("Haha remember Blipz and Chitz? Remember the Jerryboree??") They're fun references that don't come across as fanservice-y.
Tumblr media
But yeah...I dunno. It started out promising, but five minutes in, I was like "I don't know if I can sit through a whole episode of this," lol. The only scene I really liked was when Marta (was that her name?) argued with the president. That was a great portrayal of the two sides of Morty--the side that loves Rick and the side that hates him--duking it out and calling him on his bullshit.
And while I totally agree that Rick needs to stop being an asshole and tell Morty that he loves him, I thought this episode was kind of...heavy-handed? The characters flat-out say "I'm proud of you" or "You should say you love me" or whatever. The show's usually more subtle than that.
Rick keeping the machine alive so Marta (or Martina or whatever it was) can live out her life was nice but also heavy-handed and borderline OOC. I don't think he would've jumped in there and killed her or something just to be an asshole at this point in the series, but I don't see why he'd care that much, either.
Although I guess you could argue that he cared because she's part of Morty. Still, I can't believe I'm saying this, but I think the show might be getting a little saccharine. I thought "Solaricks" was a way better portrayal of Rick's transformation--he's gentler with Morty but still pulls back, like when he stops the hug. This episode was a liiiittle corny.
I don't even know what to say about Summer's B-plot, to be honest. I had trouble following it. I loved Peter Dinklage's voice, though. He has a perfect "bad guy" voice.
Anyway, I don't think this episode was horrible, but it's probably not going to end up on a lot of top-ten lists, lol. This episode could have gone a lot deeper since Rick's literally hanging out with representatives of Morty's subconscious. Rick and Morty have a LOT of shit to hash out, and Rick saying he's proud of him isn't going to cut it.

Saw your ask game and became fixated
Favorite Album: I wish I could say the Mix CD that my sister played for me, 21 TMG songs from something like 8 different albums, and no track names. Perfect. But actual albums, I guess Sunset Tree? It’s the only one that doesn’t leave me feeling like I’m slighting the rest of the discography by putting it in my top 3 😅
Favorite Alpha Song: I have so much nostalgia for Alpha Insipiens, it’s just not fair to the rest of that series
Favorite ‘Going to’ song: Going to Georgia, easy answer for so many reasons
Favorite album from the 2020s: Bleed Out was a large factor in my picking up and learning an instrument again
Favorite lofi era album: Zopilote Machine, largely because I don’t know when things stop being considered lofi. The first three songs on my mix CD were Alpha Incipens, Bad Priestess, and Going to Georgia, though
Have you listened to I only Listen to the Mountain Goats/favorite episode: I listened to the first season twice. Honestly can’t remember my favorite episode, but Mess Inside was probably my favorite cover
Favorite Media TMG was used in: Only lucky enough to encounter them in Welcome to Nightvale
Have you read any of JD’s books: Only Wolf in White Van, but I really want to read more, especially Devil House
Current favorite song: I have never recovered from Sax Rohmer #1
Songs you think are Underrated/wish more people knew: Sax Rohmer #1, Up the Wolves, Home Again Garden Grove, Autoclave… so so many that I just don’t hear anybody talking about
Have you been to a concert: I finally got to go last summer and had a fucking blast! And I’m going again next month!
Favorite Compilation Album: probably Ghana?
Song you don’t really like: Pure Honey has its charm, but it’s not for me
Comfort Song: I have a friend that sings Bleed Out as a lullaby, and it’s very good. Cotton calms me. This Year got me through some rough times, as did Sax Rohmer. Mathew 25:21 is for when I need to cry
Favorite song with Jenny in it: Jenny
thank you so much for sharing, new mutual!! yes zopilote machine is still lofi era and it ends after all hail west texas, AND SAX ROHMER NUMBER ONE (rattling the bars of my cage), ur so lucky you’ve seen them live! god cotton yes it’s reassuring in a bittersweet way if that makes sense? i listened to it on repeat doing something hard but necessary to move on this year and it ended up in my top five spotify wrapped im pretty sure haha

just finished season 4 of Buffy
I complained about this season a lot on here but still here's some overall thoughts 😂
let's start with the good stuff:
there were a few episodes I really enjoyed so fucking much - like Hush or New Moon Rising (mostly because Oz came back ngl), or This Year's Girl and Who Are You - those were so good
speaking of the last two (plus Angel's Five By Five and Sanctuary) Faith's storyline was amazing and I loved it so much, it was my favorite thing this season tbh haha
I loved Willow and Tara's relationship, they're adorable, and I do enjoy Tara, hope we'll see more of her because I wanna get to know her haha (tho I still miss Oz so much)
in the first half of the season Spike was annoying me quite a lot, he was just way too silly - but by the end I fell in love with him all over again haha
the second half of the season was pretty strong, tho it did start rough hah - but still my least favorite season so far
now to the complaints:
first, the initiative and Adam - I absolutely hated it all. it was ridiculous and annoying and just so weak villain-wise lol
it didn't feel like there were any real stakes this season tbh
I hate Riley. I have no idea why, I just can't stand him - which caused Buffy to annoy me a little bit too (I still love her a lot though, but she was so obsessed with him I was so over it)
I also dislike Anya and her relationship with Xander
the worst episode of the whole series so far was Beer Bad - I watched is so long ago I don't remember specific but I did hate it (the season started a bit slow like I mentioned and it took me a while to get into it - I was watching the first 9 episodes for like months, and the rest in like a week - hush pulled me back in haha)
and the finale didn't grip me either, we already did that whole dream thing before, and this one didn't really interest me that much sns
I also think that once I started watching Angel simultaneously with Buffy (according to a list I found on the internet lol) so that the crossover episodes would align, it got better
I'm still not done with Angel s1 (gonna finish it tomorrow I guess) but it's so fucking good and I love it (still missing Doyle though 💔) and I feel like it made s4 of Buffy a bit better sns - without Angel, Buffy s4 might have been a bit less enjoyable for me personally
so that's my thoughts on Buffy s4, strong second half, had some solid episodes, but overall not that great haha
(also: I miss Oz and I already checked Seth Green's appearances on Buffy wiki and I'm so sad, I love him so much, he was one of my faves 😭💔)

Yuri On Ice reactions from my mom; this time episode five. Minami’s my absolute favorite character, so I’m really excited for this one!!
She couldn’t tell the intro song is in English and asked me what it was saying. This meant we went back to the start after five minutes so I could sing all of the words to History Maker over the actual song. Yes I know all the words, and now she’s singing it too. She thinks it sound like he’s saying “Joseph” instead of “yourself” and won’t budge on that. I don’t hear it at all.
Mom: (About Minami’s fanboying over Yuuri) “oh, he has a crush??” Me: “Kinda” Her: *disapproving stare*
She laughed at Yuuri’s rant at Viktor, and again at Minami’s staring.
She laughed about Viktor’s drama too. And at the cameras flashing when he hugs Yuuri.
“I like the way the texture of the ice looks”
The Katsudon bit still cracks her up every time. And I do mean EVERY single time.
“I have a recipe for chicken Katsu, we should try that”
(About the audience in Hasetsu being more fired up) “yeah, cause that was your hometown, babe!”
She thought the focus on his face during the spin was weird.
“Why is everyone sweating?” (Great question, my best guess is nerves)
She was confused about how Yuuri got such a high score with mistakes, so I talked about GOEs and how they get inflated at domestic levels, the super high base value of the program, etc.
About Minami: “oh he totally has a crush on Yuuri, what did you mean ‘kind of’??” “That’s a baby.” “See! Lohengrin! It’s a real thing!”
I asked her about it months ago cause it came up on Jeopardy and her parents liked opera when she was a kid.
She wanted to know what the food on the ad break slide was, and googled it during the break. She also said that the google search autofilled as “what are those three Japanese things on sticks” (It was dango!)
Her: “Is he gonna implode? So there’s more drama?” Me: “I’m not gonna spoil it.” Her:“So he is.”
She was shocked when Viktor stormed off. And disapproving. She really doesn’t seem to like him.
“I LOVE THE WAY THEY MAKE THE ICE LOOK! The reflection of the lights! The little shine to it! It looks beautiful!”
She cooed at Yuuri’s cheering for Minami, and laughed at Minami’s reaction. She doesn’t think he’s a very good skater though, and she isn’t exactly wrong.
She noticed that Viktor WANTED Yuuri to cheer up Minami, because he looked so satisfied afterwards.
She laughed at Minami’s air guitar. She said his skating reminded her of stuff she’s seen in actual skaters who do that kind of music.
“Oh my god, stop it” when Viktor did the lip balm thing
During Yuuri’s Free Skate:
“Don’t get distracted— Oh no, he’s distracted.”
“Haha, he’s hiding his face behind the dog!” (Viktor, after Yuuri changes the elements)
“Why did he look at the judges??”
*As I was explaining the changes to the program jumps* “So why is it a bad thing that he—Oh, fuck me” (When Yuuri Hits the Wall)
Afterwards: “So why isn’t he bleeding? …There it is.”
She laughed at Yuuri’s teary chase towards Viktor at the Kiss and Cry. Not at the actual fall though, and then again at Minami’s fanboying. But she thought the Grand Prix thing was sweet.
I just noticed the other Japanese skaters ask Yuuri for an autograph while Viktor is right there. A five time world champion standing two feet away, and they all completely ignore him!! Yuuri really is the skater they all look up to, huh? I’m so proud of him.
She was CACKLING at Yurio’s shenanigans with the phone and screaming at Mila
She also got excited about “Baba” cause she recognized it as part of Baba Yaga and realized what it meant.
*My theme this season is love* “that’s a stupid theme”
She was distressed about Yuuri’s family’s love not being acknowledged, and wants him to apologize to them.
She also momentarily wondered if Cialdini coached Phichit to fuck with Yuuri before remembering that they’re former rinkmates.
This then devolved into her saying “Chele-stee-no” to her cat in an Italian accent over and over again cause I accidentally pronounced it with a hard C instead.
So yeah, I had great time here!! I’m really glad she liked Minami, and that the celebrity crush thing didn’t weird her out too much.

Let’s talk about Hospital Playlist. (KDRAMA REVIEW)
Tumblr media
note: does contain spoilers
When people ask me what is my favorite Korean drama of all time, with no doubt, IT’S HOSPITAL PLAYLIST. This drama has the comic relief, the emotional scenes, realistic characters-just to name a few. No toxic relationships and petty revenge fights. Nothing else will stop me for saying that this is the ultimate feel good drama.
SYNOPSIS: The drama shows insights into the daily lives of doctors and nurses working at Yulje Medical Hospital. It focuses on 5 doctors who have been friends since medical school, who also play together as a band.
This drama encompasses so many elements and characters so bear with me yo this might be real long
Hospital Playlist is produced/written by the Shin-Lee PD and writer pairing, whose previous works were the renowned Reply trilogy and Prison Playbook (which are *chef’s kiss*) I really like that all their dramas really highlight humanism, and puts emphasis on creating a heartwarming and realistic series. There isn’t always a major conflict to be resolved, but instead it showcases how different people-in this case mostly those in the medical field-go on about their daily lives.  I also liked their reasoning to produce a medical drama which was that hospitals were where the most dramatic moments occurred, for example during births, deaths or sickness. And since we are still in the Covid-19 pandemic, it ties in greatly to be paying homage to all the medical personnel saving lives. Hence, props to those who were involved in this meaningful masterpiece <3
The drama is not the usual 16 episodes, but has 12 episodes for each season (SEASON 2 IS COMING SOON YAAS) Good thing is I felt that they were still able to weave a dynamic storyline in the first season even with lesser episodes. The writing was just top-notch with the witty humor bits. Additionally, the music is AMAZING. I love the concept of the main characters being a band and playing different songs every episode too.
Tumblr media
Okay, now onto the characters. I thought that every character in this drama was well rounded. Starting of with the main five characters, also known as The 99ers, whose distinctive personalities and natural chemistry make all of them extremely likeable. All main characters are professors of different specialties, and I find the male OB-GYN (Seokhyeong) and female neurosurgeon (Songhwa) very refreshing. Also, I like Shin-Lee dramas always have characters that might be realistic yet hardly seen in other dramas or films. For example, Professor Ahn Jeongwon. Despite being a chaebol (inheritor/heir), he isn’t depicted as a spoilt brat or a cold character, instead as a warm Pediatric doctor who uses his wealth to secretly support patients in need. However it makes him stingy to his friends LOL
To be honest, I really thought I was gonna dislike Junwan due to his cold and tsundere nature. I pretty much believed that he was going to be the party pooper type of the bunch, but with the writer being a master of character development, he turned out to be really sincere and hilarious at times. Same for Ikjun, who apart from his enthusiastic and happy go lucky exterior, cares the most about the people around him. Although Seokhyeong seemed detached and introverted, he shows a emotional side to his friends as well as his mother. Songhwa is literally a girlboss though haha she’s smart, capable and gets along with everyone well. And she’s the most sane out of the bunch.
Tumblr media
With all the main characters, we have the relationships. Junwan is the first to date seriously with Iksun (the dog or Micky? jkjk) who is Ikjun’s sister. When it first happened I was like not again Jung Kyung Ho (bc he dated his best friend’s sis in prison playbook too LMAO) I think their relationship was realistic and open. It also showed a more sensitive side to Junwan who would do anything for her. I especially liked how he said he didn’t need access to her phone because he trusted her. Yet as all couples do, they have their fair share of ups and downs. Like conflicts on getting married and a long distance relationship as Iksun moves overseas for graduate studies. I don’t really know how to take the ambiguous ending for these two, as Junwan receives the returned box (that has the ring he sent) I really hope nothing bad happens to these two though.
Tumblr media
I’m sure we all love Wintergarden couple though, tbh they’re kinda my OTP at the moment 🤣 It was pretty much a ‘will they won’t they’ relationship with a relatively slow build. I think Gyeoul turned out to be one of my favourite characters. Shin Hyun Been did a good job at portraying her as a straightforward but innocent Resident, who is pretty much openly crushing on Jeongwon. The scenes they had together were adorably awkward (and the scene where he gives her chocopies omg) And when Jeongwon battles his inner conflict to become a priest, the final decision where they kiss was beautifully shot, with the actors both showcasing their emotions extremely well.
Tumblr media
Then we have Chihong who pursues Songhwa, his professor. Midway through the drama, it is also shown that Ikjun and Songhwa might have had romantic feelings for each other. Songhwa ends up rejecting Chihong’s confession. In my opinion, Chihong was quite a interesting character but I didn’t really like him at the end. (I like the actor though) He did a real jerk move during drinking games, insisting on Ikjun to confess his feelings towards her even though he is already trying not to put Songhwa in an awkward spot. Although his character did end up making a cool exit and when I thought about his incredible story of soldier to doctor, I kinda regret disliking him that much. As for IkSong, In the final episode Ikjun confesses to her one last time, and we are left waiting for Songhwa’s reply. As much as I love this pairing, I don’t think that the ship will sail or maybe not as quickly as we think. I believe Songhwa would meticulously consider the sacrifices to their friendship or other aspects and might not be able to bring herself to it, but I hope it’s otherwise.
Tumblr media
Lastly not forgetting Seokhyeong and Minha, another Professor+resident pairing. This one’s a bit ambiguous though, mainly because there hasn’t been much romantic development. To me, the most impactful scene came from Minha who had been irritated by continuous night shifts and was on the verge of a breakdown. She ended up remarkably saving a patient, starting off surgery on her own for the first time. Oh man Minha was such a lovable character, I remember feeling so bad for her but extremely proud of her for her accomplishment. Although Seokhyeong seemed a bit aloof and distant (which was intentional bc he’s an introvert) I think the backstory and all the hardships he faced with his family really made me feel for him. I hate to break it to you, but I’m not so sure if the ship will sail because of the phone call from his ex-wife and Minha’s somewhat rejected confession. But who knows, they might pull off a twist 👀
Tumblr media
Apart from all these characters, there are more characters HHAHAH However, I think this is the killing point of ShinLee dramas. Unlike typical dramas which usually focuses on a main character and 2-3 side characters, they like to cast a diverse range of actors (especially those from theatre/musicals and lesser known drama/movie actors) while actually give their characters personality or a reason to be there. I’ve seen many dramas where extras or side characters were kind of irrelevant thus making me feel that they weren’t needed to build the storyline, yet ShinLee dramas hit different y’all. Every role, no matter how small, holds significance to the drama. It really seemed like a collaborative work that shows off every actors skills (and not forgetting staffs) and teamwork.
Anyways because there are way too many characters and too many scenes for me to mention them all, I’ll just talk about some honourable mentions heheh
1. Sunbin and Seokmin confession scene (ahh so cute)
I kinda sensed that they liked each other at the start but I didn’t know Seokmin would ask her out on a date at the end. Even though it’s kinda awkward that they are dating and working with each other though (both are in the same department) but hey the confession was cute and awkward and just warm and fuzzy 🥰
2. MAMA ROSA IS THE QUEENN
I think we all (would) love Mama Rosa because she’s a real one ☝️ (probably the coolest mother ever) She’s feisty, hilarious and kind to others. Plus her friendship with Ju Jong Su was just adorable and super wholesome. The scenes where they were supporting one another through tough times and hanging out with each other when they felt lonely always put a smile on my face. Oh and how Mama Rosa treated Gyeoul was extremely sweet. (as well as Seokhyeong’s mother) Despite her tough exterior, she’s a likeable character for being a strong but caring woman.
3. Just Do Jae Hak
I seriously love this guy so muchhh omg he’s so funny
Do Jae Hak has a funny amd clumsy personality, though it’s clear he’s been through a lot and is strong willed person. From admitting his indecisiveness to counselling Jun Wan on his love issues, there’s literally nothing to hate about him.
4. Uju and his dadd
The father and son chemistry between these two is so good omg. The scenes with these two are so adorable and heartwarming (not to mention hilarious) It’s amazing to see how Ikjun cares so much for Uju despite his hectic workdays while going through infidelity issues with his ex-wife. Uju is matured for his age and shows his love and appreciation for his dad too, making their interaction a great portrayal of a healthy family relationship💞
5. the food stealing the show🥘
Who doesn’t love food and when a show has great food scenes? Some of the best scenes are definitely when the 99s gather to eat. It really showcases each character’s personality with the tiniest details as well as highlight warm delicious meals. Just don’t watch this when you’re hungry at 2am in the morning guys you’ll be drooling all over your screens HAHAHA
Tumblr media
Of course there are way more aspects, like Hongdo and Yoonbok, Ikjun and Iksun’s pigeon jokes and raps, or Jeongwon drunk crying in the chicken shop with his brother (who was his coach in Reply 1994 when he played Chilbong LOL)
Most importantly, I think it is the themes and messages that you get from the drama that really create such a lasting impression. Not only does it hit you in the feels with the hardships of hospital patients, or the hardworking doctors+nurses who are working long shifts saving lives, it also tackles topics of friendships through the possibilities of platonic and friends-to-lovers relationships. However I think the biggest lesson for me came from Seokhyeong, who learns to live his life doing what he want, with the people he treasures. Although the drama might seem slow at times (mainly because there isn’t really a main plot line/conflict occurring), but this drama would still bring you on a journey where you would laugh, cry and finish the series, begging for season 2 ✌🏻

Comic Review: Cartoon Network Presents #6
Tumblr media
I said I was gonna do this, so let’s get this rolling!
Okay, so Cartoon Network Presents was among the first lineup of DC’s CN comics, alongside their Scooby-Doo book and The Flintstones and the Jetsons. Those are pretty self-explanatory, but CN Presents was meant to be a grab bag of the rest of their lineup, featuring favorites from the vast Hanna-Barbera library as well as some of their recent hits. At this point, I believe they were just doing Dexter’s Lab and Cow & Chicken, as Johnny Bravo’s first season was more or less written off as a failure at the time. But don’t worry, Johnny will have his day.
Tumblr media
Okay, so confession time- this story is not new to me. Way back when, DC released a freebie comic which had stories from each of their three CN titles, and this was featured in there, alongside a short Scooby story where a stalker keeps on doning a costume to get closer to Daphne, and a Jetsons story where George is replaced by a robot version of himself. Needless to say, some serious memories came crawling back to me when I saw the cover.
Anyway, both of the stories featured in this issue are done by regulars in the comic industry, and I’ll bring up how apparent that is in a bit,
That said, I can see this story actually fit in an episode of Cow & Chicken, as it’s a cautionary tale that doesn’t go in the usual direction you’d expect, like many of David Feiss’ cartoons tend to do things. This starts off with Chicken littering, which goes against what his and Cow’s teacher taught them in school. Chicken, as per usual, is apathetic to his loud teacher’s learnings, but he changes his tune when Cow mentions that bringing in metal can bring you some change,
Tumblr media
Needless to say, Chicken has some ideas, and he starts scourging around town. There’s a slight detour when he learns that you only receive payments from going to the trash collector directly, but it gives him incentive to have Flem and Earl help him out.
Tumblr media
Alongside a dubious reading of Malcolm X’s philosophy.
Tumblr media
The three of them find enough metal to hopefully make them a little richer, and they’re greeted at the trash heep by a weird looking Cerberus creature, and guess who they belong to!
Tumblr media
Yeah, it’s the Red Guy. It’s not a Cow & Chicken segment without him, is it?
I had a better screenshot of his appearance, but it came out weird and I don’t feel like taking another, so let’s skip to this part where Chicken is caught cheating the scale, and is about to be rightfully punished along with Flem and Earl. Not by death, but by filling up the Red Guy’s furnace, which is actually pretty fair.
Tumblr media
But have no fear, Supercow is on the way to come save the day! This comic even translates her dialogue for us, which the show never did.
Tumblr media
It ends with her beating the shit out of Cerberus and the Red Guy, even though Chicken deserves his punishment. Flem and Earl, not so much.
It’s a fun enough story, and it does seem like a perfect fit for the show. The dialogue fits right in with the show.
Tumblr media
Even Flem’s awkward, vaguely racist broken English. I’m not touching that one...
The art style is a little off, though, looking more like a regular DC comic than an episode of Cow & Chicken.
Tumblr media
I mean, it looks like Chicken, but doesn’t the penciling look closer to an issue of Robin at the time instead of something? But it’s a minor complaint, as it’s still a fun read.
Tumblr media
The b story is new to me, with a Quick Draw McGraw story. It starts off pretty ordinary, as El Kabong OLE’s himself to save the day. Er, not that ordinary, as El Kabong is a bit of a klutz and usually needs Baba Looey’s help, but it’s okay, something’s about to change.
It turns out that El Kabong’s identity may be liable for copyright infringement, as there’s a Canadian crime fighter known as Le Kabong.
Tumblr media
We meet him here, and I believe he’s meant to be Loopy de Loop, but he looks more like Hokey Wolf... or maybe Mr. Jinx. Hanna-Barbeta made some nice-looking characters, but they get pretty samey.
Anyway, his agency was the one who ordered a cease and desist to El Kabong, while his French Canadian doppelganger refuses to follow suit, considering it unheroic. Until it’s discovered that someone kidnapped the local hockey team, and he takes action... so I guess he blames the devil we know? That isn’t really explained, as the next panel shows Quick Straw accepting a battle of the Kabongs.
Tumblr media
So we’re about to get a WWE (or I guess WWF. Or maybe WCW?) match, until a new challenger approaches, with a German vigilante jumping in.
Tumblr media
And then many more. This switches from wrestling to Super Smash Bros to a full on battle royale of the localized knock-offs. Which I won’t lie, it’s a pretty funny idea.
Tumblr media
Luckily, what’s a Kabong without a trusty sidekick to save the day? A few of them attempt to team up to find a way to put a stop to this, including one who looks like Boo Boo with Yogi’s hat and Johnny Bravo’s glasses.
Tumblr media
So it ends with the Kabong from Mars (no Spiders) threatening all of the puny humans to stop their shenanigans, and go back to their duties. Which hey, it works! And the story ends with Quick Draw attempting to turn the ten million pesos El Kabong received at the beginning from saving the day into cash. Except pesos are basically useless, which is funny haha right?
This reads like a Hanna-Barbera writer from the 90′s attempting to write a classic character in the present day, and mostly works alright. This does show off one problem with Quick Draw though, that its take on Hispanic culture during the period of the Wild West is problematic. Baba Looey for instance has an exaggerated voice, and he probably needs an overhaul to work today (how did that work in Jellystone btw? I still need to see it). And unfortunately, this point in the late 90′s isn’t all that much more sympathetic to Hispanic culture, as their take mostly stays the same.
But away from that, it’s pretty funny. I do really like Quick Draw when it focuses on how pathetic he is as a supposed hero, either with or without the El Kabong persona.
But I wouldn’t have known if this was in if I didn’t pick up the book. I do understand why Cow & Chicken was the main attraction- *insert Malcolm in the Middle “future is now, old man” img here*- but part of the appeal of Cartoon Network at the time was the mix of old and new school. It wasn’t uncommon to see a classic like Quick Draw next to a modern fav like Cow & Chicken.
Tumblr media
But oh well, let’s finish this up. The letters column features a 12 year old offering some of his cartoon ideas- I hope John made it; another boy named John who offers a cute drawing of Space Ghost, and asks about Jan, Jase, and Blip, while insulting the latter, which the editor is not here for; and another boy asking if there are plans for stories featuring 2 Stupid Dogs or Secret Squirrel, as well as hopes for a Cow & Chicken comic. The editor shoots down 2 Stupid Dogs happening, and to be fair, I don’t believe that ever happens. Classic cartoons from 40 years earlier? Sure. Something that ended about five years earlier? Old news. But I do believe Secret Squirrel does show up at some point.
The editor then bemoans how no girls brought in letters this month, and offers a preview of the next issue, which involves Wacky Races. And guess what, I have that one too!
Tumblr media
The issue proper ends with an editorial about the importance of recycling, which is fine and all, but my reaction to reading this was “blahblahblah put on more cartoons”
Not bad! Oh, and one more thing of note.
Tumblr media
I know, I know, they’re the enemy, and I was all over CN at this point, but I have memories of this promotion. Even though I believe it was long over at this point, and Alex Mack should have aired its last episodes before this issue hit stands.
Here’s an ad! And now it’s in your head. Sorry/you’re welcome!

Showrunner Duane Capizzi did an informal Q&A session with some fans in a CS chatroom. There are several question askers, all marked by name. Get some insider knowledge on the show, after the break!
Duane Capizzi:
Just checking things out! Feel like I'm poking my head through a door at a party I'm crashing haha.
Fun to see everyone hanging out and talking all good things Carmen
Can't stay long - I should have taken the code name "Crimson Phantom"
Crimson Phantom - I like the sound of that (if it's not already taken haha)
Carmen:
It's an awesome nickname! Personally I'm more of a Scarlet Santa Rosa person myself- I love that little interaction with Jules and Carmen in the special
Duane Capizzi:
Scarlet Santa Rosa! Yes, that was really cute between them. Too cute in fact.
Coach Brunt had some names for her too if i recollect
Arden:
Lambkins
Wren:
Didn't Brunt also call her Monica Santa Monica once?
Mage:
Yeah in the Boston episode
Also Josie San Jose
Arden:
I personally prefer Fedora the Explora
Duane Capizzi:
Josie yes hahaha
I can't believe we got away with Fedora the Explorer! I thought that would be noted but I'm glad we did. So funny!
Carmen is amazing! She "owns" whatever she wears, doesn't she?
Carmen:
She definitely owns Carmen Brand Outerwear
Duane Capizzi:
I'll share another tidbit though (along the lines of Carmen being a love story where everyone is in love with Carmen).
It was important for obvious reasons that the show be (among other things) about female empowerment. And we wanted to celebrate fashion of course. But it was super important to me to not fall into the "male gaze" trap. That was something I imparted to the storyboard crew and directors. It's a fine line, I know, but I think we succeeded.
Arden:
You sure did. What I adore about Carmen Sandiego is how unsexualized all the characters were while still being inclusive to different body types and races
Duane Capizzi:
Well artists love to sneak things in! So it was a little rule I had
They were mostly great about it - in all the 32 episodes, I think I asked to change only two shots for that reason. Where I had to go "ahem"
"Outerwear" sounds so peculiar but I think that's what made it work. I kept changing it back and forth and sometimes I'm surprised to see/hear it in the show. For the longest time it was "Carmen Clothiers." Did I make the right decision? Sometimes you can rework things too much and lose sight - it happens!
The one shot that leaps to mind was Shadowsan carrying her fireman style at top of 202, as they were escaping through the tunnels. Her, um, fundamentals were just a little too front and center to not fall into the "male gaze" trap. Nothing awful! It was borderline. We just adjusted the angle a bit
Julia:
My favorite most definitely has to be her formal wear from the "need for speed caper"
Duane Capizzi:
I'd have to think about my favorite outfit or top five. All her evening gowns of course!
Maybe "witch." We couldn't make it red because it would not have been a very good disguise (plus, you know: "Scarlet Witch" haha).
But let's not underestimate her signature hat/coat - I continue to be enamored with how we updated her look from the old trench coat thing.
Arden:
Not me suddenly motivated to draw Carmen in a scarlet witch outfit
Duane Capizzi:
Then you have to draw Zack as Pietro!
(or Player? Only his fingers are speedy)
Arden:
Idea: what if player (or Shadowsan) was Pietro
Duane Capizzi:
Shadowsan IS Pietro. He's so quick you never see him move.
Wren:
Shadowsan's fight with Brunt where it went slowmo and he moved fast was so cool!
Duane Capizzi:
Hey, Shadowsan is quite the fashion plate too - am I right?
I love the outfits on the show. So good! So perfect! But, I'm not being very modest am I
I really love SS in the dark trench coat. So. Bad. Ass.
Carmen:
Any thoughts on the Fashionista memory thing?
Duane Capizzi:
Fashionista, sure! What do you want to know?
Carmen:
Give me a second-
Duane Capizzi:
Thank you for noting the aesthetics on the show! Much effort, passion and vision from all involved - Chromosphere, our directors, animators, composers, sound mixers - everyone gave it all they had, it was so inspiring for all involved.
Carmen:
Was there any significance to that specific memory- Carmen defending Julia in the Fashionista Caper- being chosen as the first memory she remembered when she went outside? Like, why that scene specifically over any others for example?
(referring to the finale)
Duane Capizzi:
Oh, that! To be honest, not from me: we were just trying to do the "swirl of confused memories" like we did with Gray earlier in the season. We wanted to show that the ACME device had jostled some old memories loose and that "the girl agent with glasses" was now taking root in Carmen's rush of memories/emotions
But that specific memory, not necessarily from my POV - it could have been any number of Julia moments, like their first meeting on the train (for instance)
The director Jos Humphrey must have picked it. It worked for me!
Carmen:
We all loved that it was that specific memory that was chosen out of all Julia and Carmen moments, the fact that she remembered defending her was an added emotional experience to the already emotional finale
Duane Capizzi:
Well let's talk about the original scene in 204! On the surface just a light fun episode, but so many things came together there: Shadowsan connecting with Player; SS getting his new clothes; but the key thing was switching Julia back from doing Chief's bidding back to Carmen's side. The episode was built around the moment that Carmen pulls Julia on stage with her (I'm not kidding). That was THE moment
Carmen:
We have MANY questions... we should probably set a limit
Duane Capizzi:
Ask away - I don't mind. Honestly, Carmen is my favorite topic! I've been living, breathing, dreaming Carmen for the last 5 years! I don't think there's much to say, I think it's all there on screen. But happy to talk about it because I love to
Cam:
I have a question, what about the color theory in Carmen Sandiego? What do you think certain colors mean as in, blue, yellow, green, and red.
we have our own ideas about the colors but it would be interesting to hear from your perspective
Duane Capizzi:
Color theory! Well chromosphere color scripts every episode (!). If those haven't been shared publicly yet remind me, maybe I can get permission to do so or have them do it. They are lovely to behold.
But basically Carmen = red (duh); Vile = green; Acme = blue. That's the simple version. We started talking about that early on.
color scripts = they do thumbnail art of key scenes to share mood/emotion
we tried to NOT use red for non-Carmen scenes; and scenes where she was significant the color red would be dominant or sometimes symbolically precede her (for instance).
If you google color scripts I'm sure you will see some come up. Try Pixar color scripts for instance. There's a great Art of Pixar book with their color scripts.
Arden:
Do you think Julia is blue or purple?
Duane Capizzi:
Haha, Jules definitely purple! Cute.
Mage:
You've just confirmed the whole color theory these guys have been working on for a while.
Duane Capizzi:
I was actually being funny - is she actually color scripted purple in the series? Wow, my mind might be blown
Garfield:
Now I have a question!
Julia has great admiration and respect for Carmen. Do you think Carmen has as much respect and admiration for Julia as Julia does for her?
Duane Capizzi:
I think Julia might just be a little infatuated with Carmen (even if she hasn't fully articulated how to herself - remember, the show may be sophisticated but it's still a kids show). But mostly Julia just knows/intuits/deduces Carmen's a good guy, pretty much from the beginning. I think the two have a connection that defies space and time in some ways - look at how much they work in tandem without being in the same scenes together much of the time. I love that!
As for Carmen, of course she respects Julia: she knows Julia "gets" her, and respects Julia's smarts and mutual love of history/respect for cultures.
I love how Chase is the ultimate buzzkill for whatever might be stirring in Julia as she's watching Carmen fly away in the Pilot. She's like, "whooaa ..." Then Chase falls onto the windshield. Hilarious!
Nina:
I was actually wondering if Carmen and Julia were meant to have opposing color schemes? With Julia's original outfit I mean
Duane Capizzi:
Oh, good question about Julia's original outfit: I'd have to think about that or ask Jos or Chromosphere. J's colors ARE sort of a drabber distant cousin to Carmen's, aren't they? I think mostly we just wanted "drab workaday" colors for Interpol, knowing that both of them would eventually be slicked up as ACME Agents.
Nova:
Devineaux is immune to injuries it is the only reason why he has lasted so long in ACME and Interpol
Duane Capizzi:
Devineaux, one of my favorite lines: "I did not know you two kept in touch."
Am I right?
SelinIndigo:
I have one question:
Will we ever know Carmen's given name? Also, if you don't mind when is her birthday in this reboot?
Duane Capizzi:
Carmen's given name: never say never! But for where our series ended, I thought it would just interfere. That's not how I wanted you to remember her. It would have just been a label and spoiled her mystique IMO
Player, however: we totally messed with you! "Mr. Bouchard."
Carmen's birthday?
Hmmm.
Maybe month and day but not year: would hate to date the show
I also don't like naming ages in shows because it just gets weird with timelines and such. Or can be.
Carmen:
I made a post about this a while back— how did Carmen end up getting Julia's apartment address? did she just text her for it or straight up ask? did she find out on her own in the least stalker-y way possible? I just have so many theories- do you have any thoughts on it?
Duane Capizzi:
The apartment in the IA special? Oh that whole story was like one big dream sequence ;)
Arden:
What does the wink mean? Does Julia even live in an apartment?
Nina:
Does that mean Carmen dreamt she gave Julia roses or-
Duane Capizzi:
We played things faster and looser for fun there
Okay, I just saw what time it is. Yikes! Time flies when you're having fun. Well THANK YOU EVERYONE (for loving the show, for building this site, for being you.

What other anime have you seen besides FMA? - Willow the FMA Buddy
I guess technically my first anime was the Pokémon series (like most kids here in the US--unlike most kids my age though, I didn't see my first full episode until I was 13 and had access to Netflix). I adore the original Kanto series--mostly because of Team Rocket, but also Ash was such a little twerp lol. I also kept up with the XYZ arc when it was airing, since Pokémon X was a huge part of my gaming life at the time (I was bored for most of that season, truth be told, but I stuck with it because I just had to find out what happened to Alain and Mairin. How come all the best characters in Pokémon are the side characters?).
I watched the first season and a half of Sword Art Online on the recommendation of a friend (I was about 14 then, I think), but at best, I could only describe my feelings towards that show as lukewarm. I really loved the animation, and the premise of the first season was so interesting, and I remember the last two episodes of the first season carrying a lot of emotional weight for me. But the writing sort of fumbled halfway through, and then suddenly everything was weirdly sexual and kind of fetish-y for some reason and I ended up bailing. The general consensus I've heard is that that was the smart move lol.
I tried Gurren Lagann a few years ago (also on recommendation--this time from my brother) but had to nope right out of there after about five episodes because I couldn't cope with the hyper-sexualization and objectification of one of the main characters. Sure, maybe this is just me being a prude or whatever, but I personally just can't get swept up in a story if I'm constantly being slammed with the message that my female body is first and foremost a tool for the entertainment of men, no matter how great the characters/storytelling otherwise is.
That same brother felt really bad for recommending me a show that made me feel icky, so he made up for it by steering me towards Steins;Gate. I don't really remember much about it, since it wasn't something I felt compelled to re-watch, but I do remember enjoying it quite a bit. I mean, I didn't understand any of it (something about time travel by putting a phone in a microwave???) but my goodness I had a fun time with it. Also it had a story element that reminded me of Fire Emblem: Awakening, which is one of my favorite 3DS games, so yeah.
I also saw the first...10? 15? episodes of One Piece after a lot of pestering from one of my cousins, but was too overwhelmed by the length of the series and not invested enough in the premise to keep going. I don't really remember anything about it except Pirates and one guy had three swords and the kid was super stretchy, I think?
Little Witch Academia is probably my second-favorite anime after FMA. Rather a jarring shift in tone, I'll admit, but it's just such a sweet and uplifting show. No, it's not terribly groundbreaking in terms of storytelling or characters, but it's just so gosh darn upbeat and cute, and I can't help but smile any time I watch it. Also the animation is smooth as butter.
Do the Studio Ghibli films count as anime? Because I've seen quite a few of those and oh my gosh the ARTISTRY! *chef's kiss* I have yet to see a Ghibli film that didn't make my jaw drop. I also checked out A Silent Voice last year, and that movie shook me in the best possible way. I should probably look into more of Kyoto Animation's films.
I guess I can't say I've seen a ton of anime. Certainly not enough to call myself an otaku, at any rate, haha. I actually first started learning the basics of art by learning how to draw manga/anime-style characters, so I have a very soft spot for this particular style of animation regardless. Thanks so much for the ask, my sweet Willow! I'd love to hear any anime recommendations you might have. ✨

Hargreeves Kids in Order of Their Problems (and do i have a problem?)
No secret that the Hargreeves children are all fucked up, but as I was re-watching I was like damn - what if we ranked them? So here we go, I’m ranking all the Hargreeves’ spawn by their pain; taking into account their trauma with and without Reginald (mostly for Five/Klaus) and how bad it messed them up. I’ll be sticking mostly to the first season because that’s where a lot of the meat is, but I might include a tiny peek into season two.
Also, I will be directly addressing the frequent question I ask myself “Am I attracted to trauma when it comes to characters?” by looking at my favorites and if they’re all deeply scarred.
S Tier Pain - Five Hargreeves:
Not only was he forced to endure Reginald’s abusive training regime (at least until the haha moment), but he also got stuck in the future after a miscalculated time jump. You’d think that’d be bad enough, what with no longer being able to see your family, but no. Well, technically he did see them when he found their dead bodies but that’s just more to Five’s suffering. He also got jammed into a post-Apocalyptic life where he was the sole survivor and had to live all on his own (though he had Dolores, which is a whole can of sad, loneliness worms we don’t have time for). Then to make matters worse he was taken into the Commission where he was turned into as assassin for years, to which he quit early to save his family from the Apocalypse. After the first one - yes, the first - and arriving in the 60s, Five got to see a glimpse of his siblings dying to the second one. All he ever does is for his family’s survival, even if it means his misery. In season one (and two) he makes a deal with the Handler, who he can’t stand, just to
maybe
 ensure she’ll protect his loved ones from the end of the world. He willingly works with a woman he hates and likely doesn’t trust so his family would be safe. And who could forget that redheaded lady in the bowling alley, like gosh, she really ruined his life by assuming his age like that... poor guy.
A Tier Pain - Klaus Hargreeves:
Unlike Five, he got to stick around for the entirety of Reggie’s cuck ways of abusing his kids physically/emotionally/mentally. From a young age (if that episode two lunch scene is anything), Klaus has been using drugs as a way to cope with his family life and his power. His addiction has led to a rather sad life, as evident from the first episode and some of his own dialogue - he’s not used to staying in one place, if anything his visits to rehab centers are the longest homes he really has. He’s not expected to stay sober long by the counter employee, indicating he’s been there before multiple times. When talking to Five outside of the prosthetic department, he outright admits he hasn’t been with someone for longer than about two weeks. He’s never shown to even hold down a job unless you count supplying local pawn shops - or, you know, the army. He served in war, straight up war, he likely has PTSD and to make things better, note the sarcasm, he lost his boyfriend in that war. Dave, the one person he’s described as loving more than he does himself. Klaus is constantly brushed under the rug as this crazy, attention-seeking junkie for most of season one by his family, but he’s more likely just calling for the help he clearly needs. Speaking of his family, I just wanna throw in that Klaus was kidnapped and tortured and not one person seemed to notice or even care.
B Tier Pain - Vanya Hargreeves:
Neglected by her adoptive father and siblings her entire life, Vanya was left out of the loop of even her own powers until she discovered them fucking decades later. She wrote a book trying to air out her father’s awful deeds and rather than finding solidarity with their shared agony at least a little, her siblings pushed her even further away. Quick mention, during the argument on whether or not to turn off Grace, she was immediately shut down on an opinion until she was shown to agree with Diego. Her vote didn’t matter until she sided with another sibling. Vanya grew up so starved for attention and love that when she got into her first relationship with Leonard (that bitchy murderer) she mistook it for a real love. Stayed with an abusive, gaslighting killer against all her sister’s warnings. She was betrayed by her own brother (fuck Luther, me and the homies hate Luther) after coming home, sobbing and pleading forgiveness, just wanting to help into being locked back in that vault Reginald used to keep her in. Vanya snapped, felt there was no other outlet and truly there possibly wasn’t for her, and ended the world. She was in so much pain, so angry with her life and how it was ruined by her own family that she blew up the moon. And honestly? I’m not even mad at her for it.
C Tier Pain - Diego Hargreeves:
Dude found his ex-girlfriend’s - and probably his potential love interest’s - corpse. He’s aching inside at least a bit. His spot as Number Two fueled a deep need to prove himself, whether he admits it or not, it’s why he’s a vigilante. Diego functions off of stopping crime and it’s only different from his childhood because he does it alone. He feels the need to validate what he went through, as if his suffering needs to be explained in some way. Speaking of childhoods, who gives them to us? Moms. Grace is his robo-Mom with no real sentience (well, before Cha-Cha and Hazel raided the place anyway, reboot Grace has some weird independence complex going on). She read to him, put him to bed, and fed his Mama’s Boy fixation - even going as far as to help Diego with his stutter. He put her down, in the robot sense. Diego was the first person to speak against shutting Grace down and yet he did so himself - knowing it’s what had to happen.
D Tier Pain - Ben Hargreeves:
He’s dead, so I’m not sure what he’s gone through other than having “The Horror” in his stomach and Reginald as a dad. So there’s not much to say about his trauma other than having to sit through watching people die horribly by his power’s hand. But again, he’s dead, and dying is one of the most traumatic things I can think of. That’s why he’s higher than the others but still lower than the previous four Hargreeves’ kids.
E Tier Pain - Allison Hargreeves:
She’s known as a “Daddy’s Girl” how that’s possible with Reginald, I’m not sure, but she is. Not to excuse any of the torment she got as a child or give the abuse a pass, at all. It’s just an inference that as Number Three and someone who easily got what she wanted with her power, she probably didn’t feel out-casted like Vanya. Nor was she left to survive on her own and then kill to live like Five. Allison, in all fairness, was viciously attacked by her sister after revealing she “Rumored” her memory away. Unlike Ben, she survived and went on to be the peaceful one of the family and her power didn’t directly kill, especially in ways that “The Horror” did. So I must rank her pain lower with a sad bob in my throat, nervous that all the Allison lovers will scream at/cancel me for putting her at E.
F Tier Pain - Luther Hargreeves:
Fuck Luther, me and the homies hate Luther. This little fuck found something out of proving himself to his father. So far up his dad’s ass that he was cool with being a monkey space boy for years until he realized Reginald didn’t give a shit about him. And honestly? Same. No but really, he did become a monkey man purely out of Reginald’s need for a hero to do what he said - and Luther couldn’t fill that if he was dead. I do recognize that his life was essentially wasted by his years spent on the moon, blindly following Dad’s orders but to be honest, he’s too in the background. He had nothing other than his father and therefore lost nothing other than his family, it’s hard to feel bad when you know he had no intention of doing anything other than be by Reginald. No plans unlike Klaus who had his life decimated by his drugs dependency or fuck, Five! Five had absolutely no life other than living through the Apocalypse for decades. Overall, I hate Luther but even though I can’t stand his gorilla guts, I do recognize that he has trauma.
~~~Do I Have A Problem?~~~ Considering that Five and Klaus are my favorite characters and they are the most traumatized? Yes, I am unnecessarily in love with characters in pain. I didn’t want to be a mannequin before I knew about Five, and now I crave to morph into Dolores (or at least combine with her like a Power Ranger)
Drunj!Der Yells About Outlander
Thoughts on Ep. 501
We’re back again for another season of men never having to demonstrate any personal growth on screen because the writers don’t feel like that’s important to show and instead force the audience to just forget everything that previously happened because look! The characters, who aren’t real and are just what we write them to be, are all cool now so why aren’t you? #BadFans
As a standalone episode/series premiere of a new show, this episode was really good! I enjoyed it a lot, with some obvious exceptions. As the season five premiere of a show with a long history? What the actual fuck, why do you keep doing this, writers?
In season one, Jamie beats Claire, never actually apologizes for it, and we’re expected to be like oh lol it’s cool now. No worries.
In season two, Jamie takes his pants off with some prostitutes while his pregnant wife is at home, blames it on his “mission,” and we’re expected to be like oh lol it’s cool now. No worries.
In season three, Jamie is an asshole and a half to Claire when she gives up literally everything (including their daughter) to come find him and knowingly marries the woman who tried to have Claire killed because of one dance with random children at a holiday party, and we’re expected to be like oh lol it’s cool now. No worries.
In season four, Roger is a rancid garbage heap to Bree all season and is only begrudgingly down to stay with her as if *he’s* the one who’s been wronged by her, and Jamie literally sends a guy into what he thinks is like certain death/slavery without getting any real information, and we’re expected to be like oh lol it’s cool now. No worries.
So watching this premiere, I was not at all shocked that there was a convenient time jump where everything was so handily worked out off screen and we’re all super cool now, and Jamie thinking Roger isn’t good enough for Bree is played for a joke instead of being THE ABSOLUTE TRUTH. #BreeDeservesBetter
Anywho, onward under the cut because I’m back on my drunken bullshit.
Ooo, a rape warning before the episode, starting off very on brand for you I see, show.
Fuck them very much, again, for including that very unnecessary story line in the first place.
I miss Scotland, y’all. Also, young Murtz can get ittt.
So can old Murtz.
#TeamMurtz
This bit though with wee Jamie made me feel feelings. Jamie and Murtagh’s relationship is literally one of my favorite parts of this whole damn show and saving Murtagh was the best adaptive choice these fuckwads made.
Unpopular opinion alert, but I actually really like the new credits music. I will always like season one’s the best, but this one is up there.
Also, am I a giant weirdo for being happy that even though they change stuff in the credits all the time, they keep in the shot of Claire’s legs running from the pilot? Idk why, but I’m like sentimentally attached to that shot.
Also, that is a fucking microscope I see in the credits, are we gettING SCIENCE!JIZZ?!??!?!?!
SCIENCE!JIZZ! SCIENCE!JIZZ! SCIENCE!JIZZ!
“Careful, or ye’ll lose yer head.” And we’d all be definitely super sad if that happened. Yep, can’t have that. #TeamCutthroatRazor
Jamie threateningly shaving and insulting Roger is the fandom minus the stans who for some inconceivable reason still like that fucker.
Seriously, fuck Roger. Jamie is apparently the only one who hasn’t gotten amnesia about how terrible he is. I guess it’s because Jamie has been really fucking terrible many times and like recognizes like.
I fucking love that Murtz made Bree’s ring. Makes it more meaningful than the random trinket Roger picks up at the Gathering Without End in the book. Like Claire’s Lallybroch key ring was more meaningful than the book!ring. Fuck the show for ditching the Lallybroch key ring because tHe BoOk RiNg Is WhAt FaNs LiKe. No. Stop. Bad choice.
The aerial shot going over the big house makes me hopeful that this season won’t be as fucking claustrophobic as last year. Because seriously, we can all tell you’re still in Scotland. Doing a whole season in basically closeups doesn’t make it seem any more North Carolina-y.
CLAIRE MAKING BREE’S DRESS AND GETTING TO BE THERE FOR HER DAUGHTER’S WEDDING WHEN SHE DIDN’T THINK SHE’D BE ABLE TO GIVES ME ALL THE FEELINGS! CLAIRE DESERVES ALL THE GOOD THINGS! I JUST LOVE CLAIRE A LOT OK! SORRY NOT AT ALL EVER FUCKING SORRY! #BeauchampBrigade5Eva
Bree’s dress is fucking gorgeous. I lowkey like it better than Claire’s.
Da!Jamie on his something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue quest is fucking adorable. He also never thought he’d get to see this one of his kids’ wedding so yay for him too.
“And we’re giving her away to a man who loves her.” “Oh.” “What? You doubt his love?” “Um, I’m sorry, did you SEE all last season?! Did everyone else get amnesia?!”
Also, bullshit about Roger being terrible aside, this right here, with Jamie and Claire actually talking to each other in an adorable and snuggly way. Like being all close and cuddly and shit. THIS IS MY SHIT. When we all bitch about wanting more Jamie and Claire couple stuff and the writers are all like “but the sex doesn’t advance the story” it’s like no you fuckwits, we don’t always mean sex! Sometimes we mean sex, because sex is important in their relationship (and sex does not necessarily equal nudity), but most of the time we mean SHOW US THAT THESE PEOPLE LOVE EACH OTHER WITH THE SMALL CUTE STUFF LIKE THIS! I’m *rull* curious to see how much more of stuff like this we get this season now that Balfe and Heughan are producers. Balfe especially, considering how dirty they did Claire last season...
DA!JAMIE AND ANOTHER OF HIS KIDDOS! Da!Jamie being sappy and sentimental at his kids’ weddings is 100% my jam.
HIS FACE WHEN BREE SAYS JE SUIS PREST MAKES ME FEEL ALL THE FEELINGSSS.
MOM AND DAD ARE AT THEIR LIL GIRL’S WEDDING AND MY SKIN IS CLEAR AND MY CROPS ARE THRIVING. Except that one weed over there in the groom’s place that just won’t go away.
I am so fucking glad they did away with the Gathering Without End. I swear to fuck 17% of a book that’s just like camping and periods and breast milk is aggressively not my jam.
Unfortunately the groom being a douchenozzle is not a legal reason to object to a wedding. But it really should be.
Fersali being all snuggly and cute during the vows is fucking precious. I love Fersali. Protect Fersali at all costs.
I’m ok with playing Jamie and Claire’s music over Bree and Roger’s wedding because like, this is the culmination of all the shit that Jamie and Claire went through together and I’m all for making stuff just about them, haha. But otherwise, weird choice to not give Bree and Roger their own theme?
Also, I get that it’s a better choice to have a character we already know and have established stakes with be here to do the red coat stuff, but loool at the thought of the fucking governor coming to this random backcountry wedding. Tryon, buddy, I get that Murtz is your white whale, but you look obsessed in a bad way, bruh.
GERMAIN!!! I FUCKING LOVE GERMAIN! I FUCKING LOVE THAT JAMIE TALKS SHIT ABOUT PRESBYTERIANS TO GERMAIN! GIVE ME ALL THE SASSY SMOLS!
“Some of us like to think before we act.” Oh fuck all the way off, Roger. ALL THE WAY OFF.
“There was me thinking that you were just trying to shut me up for a minute.” I mean, that was an added bonus, Rog.
Sophie has really gotten so much better at acting. She’s always such a goddamn delight on press tours and I’m like *rull* glad to see her growing into the role.
Lizzo/Flute Lady from the Wedding Band 2020
I 100% wanna chill with JQM and Fersali. This squad of cool kids seems aggressively more fun than the dancers.
Oh Isiah Morton. If only you could keep it in your pants.
I LOVE FERGUS WITH MY WHOLE HEART.
I LOVE MARSALI POSSIBLY EVEN MORE.
GODDAMN IT I JUST LOVE FERSALI SO FUCKING HARD.
Seriously, the sass and theatricality and sarcasm of Marsali Fraser. I stan. I fucking stan.
Also I 100% kept reciting “To sit in solemn silence...” through that whole scene. Once a theater kid, always a theater kid.
Don’t be a buzzkill, LJG. I love that posh nerd. Except when he’s being a fucking creeper about Jamie to Claire.
“Mistress, can I dance with the guy I thought raped you because he was such a twatwaffle?” “Sure, Lizzie, go for it! Because we’re all friends now.”
We’re just leaning in on the dad stuff this episode. The hot dads of Riverdale should form a gang with the hot dads of the Ridge just for kicks.
Obligatory fuck the writers for including Bree’s rape. Since they did though, good on them for showing her PTSD. Although fuck them for including such a graphic flashback. Much like the choices they made in the season one finale, it centers the rapist and the act more than the survivor.
Can this please be the only Fred reference this season? Also love to lightly joke about an emotionally abusive asshole who treated Claire like shit and used Bree as a weapon against her. Claire, being the bigger person she’s always been, will obvs not speak ill of Fred to Bree (unlike how Freddy boy undermined Claire in front of Bree), but Bree is now aware of just how shitty Fred was. Even if he wasn’t overtly shitty to her, her still being all lovey about him, knowing what he did to her mother, is lowkey super fucked up. “Well I know he was shitty to other people, but he never did anything to me” is never a good look.
Bree hugging Jemmy, oh man, I just wanna give her a hug and tell her everything’s gonna be ok.
Jocasta is still trash (there’s no such thing as a benevolent slave owner) but this Murcasta scene is a goddamn delight.
OK BUT NOW I NEED FAN ART OF MURTZ AS A FAIRY KING!
Roger singing to Bree is cute and all, but then using the music for the whole montage is cheesy af and I don’t think I like it.
Is that Arch and Murdina I spy there in the crowd?
Marsali is literally the most fertile woman in the Colonies.
Grannie and Granda trying to get it on veryyy quietly so they don’t wake Jemmy is fucking adorable as shit and I lowkey love it.
Awww, poor LJG. I ship Lord John with someone who actually loves him.
Ok I get Murcasta having to break up because of his regulator stuff, randomly introducing Duncan Innes is a fucking weird choice.
Maria Doyle Kennedy really was the fucking perfect casting choice.
Oh hey, Josiah Beardsley. I was hoping they’d cut out the whole thing with the Beardsleys and Lizzie, but honestly, I’ll take that silliness over Emo!Roger any day.
Good on Jocasta for being a clever MacKenzie, but fuck Roger for only doing the right thing when he’s insulted into it. TL;DR: Fuck Roger.
Is Gerald Forbes going to randomly turn into Neil Forbes at some point like he does in the book?
DOCTOR CLAIRE FOR THE WIN GIVE ME ALL THE DOCTOR CLAIRE.
Srsly, I am here for Jamie shitting on Roger at literally every opportunity. Preach, Jamie. Preach.
“I’ll leave you to yer patients. And to wage war with your wee invisible beasties.” Seriously though, this is my jam. This playful banter. For so much of the series, it’s been like do these two even like each other? Because the writers kept trying to make the show into something it wasn’t. Politics, war, characterization flipflops and assholery FoR tHe DrAmA. It was so hard to see why Claire would ever pick this guy. I’m very cautiously optimistic that more shit like this will be peppered in this year because dammit, this is why we’re all fucking here.
“Then ye must find yerself a lieutenant.” Can it be Marsali? Please? Can Marsali be Claire’s lieutenant?! Because cutting the whole Malva bullshit would be ideal. And Fersali gets so sidelined in the later books that I’d fucking LOVE the writers to make changes so they can be more centered with the rest of the fam. And I am fucking obsessed with Claire and Marsali’s relationship. Marsali is the most Claire Jr. character in this whole damn show and I WANT THEM TOGETHER IN FRONT OF MY EYEBALLS.
Roger pricks his index finger but smudges the blood on Jemmy’s head with his thumb. Not the takeaway of this scene at all. But since I don’t like Roger, that’s my bullet for it.
Also I love that they switched the whole raise a militia thing to a hunt for Murtz & Squad rather than needing to do it because some randos are somewhere doing a thing and then lol jk they left so you can all go home like it is in the book.
Totally called it that they were going to combine the two bonfires and that this was when the kilt was gonna make its triumphant return.
Also I fucking love that it’s the music from Je Suis Prest during the scene when Jamie puts his kilt back on.
And thank fuck they didn’t put any dialogue/voiceover in this scene when Claire sees Jamie. It’s so much more powerful without it.
Aaand we’re burning a cross. At least they were smart enough not to burn a Roman cross, but they’re still burning a cross instead of just doing a bonfire. The scene could be just as powerful had it been adapted to not have a burning cross. Fuck them, tbh.
Remember that time that fuckwit Roberts tried to be like oh we’re not *really* burning a cross so we’re not racist but we’re not gonna address it directly because lol out fanbase is fucking wicked conservative and also a fucking cult who will yell at us for changing anything.
Because seriously that twatwaffle really tried to pretend like a celtic cross isn’t a religious symbol so they’re not having a KKK rally in this white supremacist hellscape. FUCK THAT GUY FOR BOTH HIS SHITTY DECISIONS AND ALSO FOR ACTING LIKE WE’RE ALL FUCKING IDIOTS.
BuT hIsToRy AnD tHe BoOk! Fuck that. Do. Not. Burn. Crosses. But they showed a lynching last year for the sole purpose of showing the shocked white people, so of course they fucking burned a cross.
Jamie being both himself and Colum from the Gathering in season one at the same time is a fucking sight to see.
The look on Knox’s face is *chef’s kiss*. Bruh you don’t even *know* who you’re dealing with.
Aaand in a move that is not at all shocking, Roger hesitates *again*, when Jamie extends his hand to him. Fuck, and I cannot stress this enough, that guy. I get that he’s untrained and scared or whatever, but buddy you deal with that shit tomorrow. You don’t fucking leave Jamie hanging when he’s doing this big theatrical thing in an effort to fucking save his land and tenants. Ugh.
FERGUS, SON OF HIS NAME AND HIS HEART! Jamie and Claire’s first kid getting the props he fucking deserves. ILY SO MUCH FERGS!
Marsali’s face when Fergus goes to give his oath. Just the pride and love there. I JUST LOVE THEM SO FUCKING MUCH OK.
I appreciate the commitment to the shitty green screen of that titular Ridge, haha.
That is a *rull* phallic rock in your circle, Murtz.
BUT...ALWAYS TAKE A MURTAGH! *cries*
This is a real gut punch of a scene, tbh. It’s 100% the right thing to do, but damn, right in the fucking feels.
This episode, with my selective amnesia activated per the above lol, has me more hopeful for how a season might be than I’ve been in a while. But this feeling has consistently been crushed in the past. Here’s to hoping the show finally stops doing us dirty!
Red vs Blue Season 2 Rewatch
Well I'd meant to do my season two rewatch Saturday but was sick most of the weekend. But now I'm feeling well enough to watch and enjoy!
Aw, I forgot that the first scene of the season is Doc's introduction.
Church being so done with Caboose and Tucker, and the combination of O'Malley and Caboose means that his threats involve giving Church a birthday present (sure it's Tucker's head, but you know).
Just imagining Doc's expression as the Blues explain that Church is a ghost and now a ghost in a robot makes me laugh. Also another thing is that the Blues apparently have a Spanish-English dictionary, which somehow the Reds never bothered to get for years. Sorry, Lopez!
I love that Church actually knows military lingo and it's Tucker and Caboose who are like "???" whenever he tries to be smart in earlier seasons. Also Tucker just being like "Nope, I like my blood on the inside."
God, I forgot that Church went "I can't pronounce Frank, we're calling you Doc." Like..Frank? At least protesting over DuFresne makes a little more sense! Church really does love to mess with people. Also Doc's speech about the differences between being a medic and a doctor remains iconic. "Well, a doctor cures people. A medic just makes them more comfortable.. while they die."
I also forgot that Church just straight shoots Caboose (and actually hit him!) so Doc will go over and help him. Stone cold. "I can't believe he shot me!" "Oh, don't even START Caboose!"
Also love that the Reds have staff meetings, which Grif presumably sleeps through. Though why they all even trusted Grif to carry ammo around, I just don't know.
And the beginning of the iconic surrender exchanges. Cake, flags (wait no flags), Lopez. Doc turning into a fake hostage. "You don't get anything except humiliation and ridicule!" "We've already got that! What else do you have?"
I forgot that Doc immediately assesses the Red Team, realizes Grif is the least popular of the group, and immediately starts insulting him to curry favor. Speaking of stone cold, like dang, Doc.
Another iconic scene is Church ragging on Tucker as he wiggles his switch. :D And of course Sarge's amazing code is "drive." He's definitely that guy whose password is Password1235.
Fun parallels with Donut's "I'm so freaking lost" and Doc's "Help, this Jeep is kidnapping me!"
Lopez is like a son to Sarge! Sarge loves him so much that he forgives him for turning against him and murdering him. Also Sarge thinking he can fight a machine gun.
Tucker: "You hardly ever used your legs before anyway. I've never heard of a grown man asking for so many piggy-back rides." Church: "Hey, I already told you: that was for science." And thus canonical piggyback rides were established.
Bold of Simmons to call someone else Poindexter.
Everyone thinking Church is shy because he can't turn around.
Grif using Doc's words against him, and thus a low-key dislike of each other was born.
Poor Doc. Stuck wandering the wilderness aka the 60 feet or however much space there is between the bases.
Simmons and Grif squabbling like an old married couple trying to tell the story about the Blues and Doc.
I am usually against love triangles, but the Lopez/Sheila and Sheila/Caboose is so good.
Caboose having a good idea, except they didn't consider that Lopez would immediately escape.
Ah, the old days when Lopez actually believed in the Red Team. Also will always love "Primary objectives: 1. Fix everything. 2. Hate the orange one. 3. Call mom more often." Lopez calling Sarge father! And then his brutal disillusionment as the Reds almost kill him.
Simmons loves that machine gun.
Lopez/Sheila is such a good ship. Love their meet-cute. Of course then Tex steals his body. Also Sheila being into Lopez AND Tex. I'd forgotten about that.
"Tucker, there's a very fine line between not listening and not caring. I like to think that I walk that line every day of my life."
Love Tex just rolling with "Sure, I'm a ghost." And now we're finally into the O'Malley plot which is so much fun.
Sarge's been wanting to get a cyborg on his team for this whole dang war. He's so happy when Simmons becomes a cyborg. Meanwhile Grif and Simmons are united in hating the idea.
Tex telling embarrassing stories about Leonard's high school years. :D And the beginning of this very weird plan to rescue Caboose from O'Malley. And seeing the inside of people's heads. Or at least Caboose's head, which means a stupid Tucker and a Church who is even more foul-mouthed than Church himself plus he's Caboose's very best friend. Sarge the southern pirate. Donut the girl. Grif's yellow armor.
Grif sounds almost impressed when he does the 1-2-3 count that he pulled on Simmons and realizes that Donut beat him at his own game. Unfortunately then he promptly gets run over by Sheila.
"Suck it, Blue!"
I honestly love Lopez's love song to Sheila. He's such a romantic.
Church is such a nerd. His insults are so bad.
And the beginning of Doc and O'Malley's saga begins. Their juxtaposition is amazing.
And the beginning of cyborg Simmons! I still love that even if Simmons instantly insults Grif, the fact remains that he went through surgery to save Grif's life. And he sounds genuinely worried when Grif starts coughing, right up until the point he figures out Grif is using his brand new replacement lungs to smoke. And Simmons trying to get Grif to eat healthy and stop smoking. Good luck with that, Simmons...
Simmons apparently likes to dance, if his fury over the assumed cancelled holiday party is any indication. That's a prompt for someone!
Donut and Tucker are both the romantics of their team because Tucker thinks Sheila/Lopez is sweet, he just doesn't want to deal with love triangle bullshit.
Meanwhile Lopez and Sheila go on strike for machine rights and I for one support them wholeheartedly.
Double O Donut! I love Donut and Grif's misadventures together.
Tucker: "Sheila and Lopez are now considering leaving to form their own robot army. They said no one would dare oppose them." Church: "What?! Did you try to talk them out of it?" Tucker: "No way, I wouldn't dare oppose them!"
Poor Donut. He has no sense of direction. And poor Doc, stuck with O'Malley for company.
Sarge talking about the entertainment value of being tortured. Sarge...what.... I'm not gonna kinkshame, but I'm definitely gonna think about kinkshaming Sarge.
Donut and Caboose's truth or dare scene is so cute. They're such a fun dynamic. And I really wonder what Donut was gonna say about the Red Team plans until Church possesses him. And Church is immediately super chill in Donut's head, and wants to just relax and do some arts and crafts. And Donut considers Caboose his friend! And Caboose really likes Private Biscuit.
Church trying to bargain for two robots so he can have Tex back is sweet right in the middle of a ridiculous scene. And Donut being so excited for a sleepover with the Blues.
I'm just saying, Sarge would make an excellent car salesman the way he's messing with the Blues over these robots. And Donut must be rubbing off on him, heh, because "I've been told my lube jobs are fantastic!" is definitely a Donut line.
Church using military lingo in one episode and then a handful later not understanding military time is such a Church thing.
Finally to the iconic Tucker line of Grif and Simmons. "It's just the same two guys bickering like an old married couple. I've only been listening for like five minutes and I can already tell they're really in love. Why can't they see it?" And Church doesn't even bother to argue.
Tucker discovering Red vs Blue is a lie is still amazing. As in the ironic discussion, which I will always love.
Donut's sarcasm when he realizes they're leaving him and Sheila behind to guard each base. Man versus tank. Should go well for him.
And set up for season three, which has some of my favorite team ups-- Sarge and Caboose, Grif and Church. That'll also be a fun rewatch.
Time for the bonus features aka Outtakes, PSAs, and deleted scenes!
Honestly most of the PSAs this season weren't great, but the Fourth of July fireworks safety one did make me laugh. And it does have Donut with his Kiss the Cook apron!
Outtakes were okay, with the running theme of Burnie trying to explain adlibbing to everyone else, haha. Also "Great Caesar's Dressing!" is as catchy as "Great Caesar's Ghost!" And the outtake of Sarge being Hamlet. And Tarzan. And the Grif and Simmons audition tape was fun.
Deleted scenes! Doc and Vic having some weird chemistry. Calling Doc hot and saying he missed him. And Doc complaining that no one likes him and that someone stole his wallet. Of course then Vic immediately gets mean. The others include Sarge and Grif prepping Simmons for cyborg surgery before Grif gets hurt and they actually go through with it, which mostly includes getting Simmons super drunk.  Sounds about right for Blood Gulch!
Star Trek TOS Liveblog: The Man Trap
This will be the third time ever watching this one. The first time was when I was fifteen, and I wasn’t impressed. The second time was back in January and while I ranked it pretty low (2/5 IIRC) it was okay, but nothing great. Will that change now having seen the whole series, thus the new insight might change my opinion for better or worst? Well, let us find out~!
This is technically a McCoy episode, so it DOES already win more favor now that he’s my absolute favorite. First two times all I knew about him was that he was a doctor and... that was it. Seriously, McCoy needs more love in popular media and not just for the ‘I am a doctor, not x’ and ‘He’s Dead Jim’ jokes.
The first episode broadcast, and they get the McKirk dynamic perfect instantly. Mind you this was the fifth episode produced, but still this was the 60’s audience first time meeting Kirk and McCoy and this would be the first dynamic introduced to them. And right of the bat, it’s so good. Kirk teasing McCoy about his ex and the flowers bit, haha! Plus the fact that Kirk felt the need to mention that Nancy is McCoy’s ex in his Captain’s Log amuses me for some reason.
I didn’t appreciate how freakin’ amazing an actor DeForest Kelley was the first time around (and not the second time with this episode specifically either), but the way he performs McCoy’s clear anxiety, anticipation, and nervousness about meeting Nancy again... God I love this man~ Also McCoy’s real cute when he’s lovestruck, haha~
“He’s all yours Plum... Dr. McCoy” Jim is just enjoying every moment of finding out about Bones’ love life/messing with Bones over his love life and I love it XD McCoy’s face at that haha~!
Darnell, the first causality of Star Trek. Just missing the red shirt to make it all complete haha~
Sorry your flirting didn’t work out Uhura, but don’t worry! You’ll have better luck in an alternate timeline~!
Aww first McKirk fight. But hey, they make up like... five minutes later. Did I mention that McKirk is an underrated dynamic/ship (I did) ? Cause this is such good McKirk material.
I forgot how freakin’ creepy the Salt Monster is...
I SO wish that we’d had more of Sulu being a plant nerd in-show. Rand was also really fun in this one, which with how she’s treated in all of her other episodes... God she had so much wasted potential.
Is this the only time we ever see McCoy in his quarters? I need to look that up later... also I think I saw somewhere that he and Spock are neighbors going off their nameplates which of course they would be XD
Kirk talking serious business while casually eating some colored stuff on the bridge. Dork.
...okay yeah this episode is definitely hitting me harder this time than the last two times. Like last time I didn’t know about McCoy enough to either feel bad or be worried about him... while this time the ’OMG LADY IF YOU DO ANYTHING TO MCCOY I WILL RIOT AND NO ME ALREADY KNOWING WHAT HAPPENS DOESN’T CHANGE THAT FACT!!!’ feeling is now in high gear.
McCoy, despite clearly still having feelings for her, keeping himself together and not reciprocating Nancy’s advances because she’s a married woman. He’s a good man. I will admit to laughing when Nancy says that she likes him more because his feelings are stronger though, because OF COURSE McCoy’s feels strong emotions all the time haha~!
Considering that she’s under his command in The Undiscovered Country, I’d really like to have sen more Sulu and Rand friendship. It was cute in this episode~
Again, because I failed to appreciate how good of an actor that De was the first time around, I didn’t appreciate how well he did as McCoy whose really Nancy disguised as McCoy. He’s legit creepy with how coldly calculative and subdued (especially compared to how passionate and upfront that McCoy normally is in comparison), yet twitchy and unhinged due to the desperation for salt that the creature is. All the little physical motions that he does as they interrogate Crater, clearly on edge with said motions and body language at the possibility of being exposed. Acting as your character actually being another character acting as your character is not easy to do, but De absolutely nailed it. Why they waited until Season 2 to give him a starring credit I’ll never know.
Love how clearly Spock’s already suspecting that something’s not right with McCoy. When McCoy isn’t being an illogical, over-emotional human, he just knows that something is horribly, horribly wrong even this early on XD Too bad he got injured in the process and all, but meh not the worst that’ll happen to him.
Poor McCoy wakes up to his best friend telling him that his ex is dead while she’s screaming about him wanting to kill her and God what did he do to the universe to deserve this?
Okay admittedly McCoy not being willing to shoot when he’s seeing Nancy clearly doing something to Jim (even if he doesn’t know what) might have been pushing it a bit much... but tbf he’s still clearly shocked/processing what the Hell is happening, just woke up form being drugged, and struggling with his feelings plus he doesn’t like to harm anyone cause doctor and all, so... maybe pushing it but I can believe why he’s in denial despite what’s happening right in front of him.
Ah the one thing that can break Spock’s logical Vulcan demeanor and get outright violent even this early on: Jim being in danger. Glad we got that right first episode... fifth... whatever!
And McCoy kills the image of his former lover to save his best friend’s life even when she begs to him for her not to... again, what did he do to the universe to deserve this? But on the upside he chose to do it to save him so... can I count that as a McKirk moment? Yeah sure, we’ll count it even if it hurts.
Te ending is kind of solemn. McCoy’s clearly not over what just happened, and God who could blame him? Kind of a bummer that he got no real closure, and knowing him it’s just another scar that he’ll carry and keep covered up along with all the others. Hopefully Jim at least gave him some support.
So yeah... I honestly DID really like this better this time. It’s still not the best episode, but it’s by no means a bad one. I’d boost the 2/5 rating to a 3/5 rating and take it off the Least Favorite S1 Episodes list, but we’ll see how I feel when I let it settle and watch it again for the review. Either way... God McCoy needs a hug after this. Oh and I almost began writing a whole McCoy meta regarding this episode (and some For the World is Hollow... added for good measure) which got long enough to require it’s own post that I’ll get to soon. But yeah some nice McKirk, creepy salt monster, excellent DeForest Kelley acting, Sulu and Rand being cute, and it was a decent episode. Though IDT it was the bet to be the premiere once it would have been stronger if the audience had gotten to know McCoy’s character better prior, but that’s the business for you. Was very much worth looking at again~!
Well at this point I’ve clearly officially decided to not gif episodes during the season (not that I won’t make gifs, just not episode specific ones), so I’m sticking with my episode reactions and thoughts!
Episode 6 Reactions ▸ “Nakara”
God I love Diyoza so much and this is such a well-done scene. She’s such a badass!!! Violent, beautiful, smart. Such an icon. She’s one of my favorite parts to come out of the “second half” (season five onward)
I too make bad puns like Niylah regardless of the situation
God I didn’t know I needed Clarke in a Matrix-like jacket until now and it’s amazing
Ron Weasley voice: “Why spiders? Why couldn't it be follow the butterflies?”
Between Monty’s curiosity and Harper’s enjoyment of horror stories, I’m not shocked at all that Jordan is enjoying all of this so much
“Now that that’s out of your system” — god why is he so good????? I freaked out about JR Bourne last week too but lord he’s keeping me invested in this
The transitions and editing this season are excellent and the Clarke/queen one is EXCELLENT
I’ve absolutely had my issues with how Raven’s been handled as a character the past couple seasons but idk. I liked the conversation she and Clarke had. It felt like Raven admitting that she hasn’t taken on what’s happened in the past and the disconnect she’s had with responsibility. It feels like a callback to telling Clarke that choosing who lived and died was her specialty. And yeah if you believe Clarke’s never cracked once then why not shove it on her?
Also I’m sure someone else has said this already, but it reminded of one of the first things my boyfriend said about Bellarke after showing him a couple episodes. Bellamy and Clarke are the only people who really get each other. That’s why they have such a connection to each other, romantic or not. He’s the only one who’s really seen Clarke break down and to our current knowledge, same with him.
“Finally tuned engine” really represents how Raven approaches humans. It’s why she was so angry when she was injured. It’s why she holds others to such high standards. And she’s learning that while she’s a badass, she has her weaknesses and she’s coming to terms with it. She’s never admitted to being afraid once in this show. And I guess I didn’t expect to walk out of this way with a lot of Raven thoughts but here we are!
How does Emori get more beautiful every episode???
Indra getting the support and validation she deserves gives me life. She’s been around for all of this and understands people SO well. You need a leader who needs to understand every level. And every motivation. Also Adina is a masterful actress. I missed badass fight choreography too!
WEAPONS HOT
As with any show, especially one with 16 episodes, you’ll definitely have some that are a bit lower on the action/story. This is pretty far down on my list BUT you also need episodes like this! Definitely pieces of it that’ll come into play as well as revealing plot points. Plus more character development. We’re seeing Gabriel and Echo and Raven stepping into new places. Memori continuing to evolve so much from the original Bonnie and Clyde status we got to see them in and shining. The evolution of Grounders with Indra taking the initiative to become a leader. There’s a lot to wrap up this season and there’s still a lot of plot going on, but I do think they’re juggling it pretty well. I am certainly excited for everyone to start coming together though so we can narrow down the storylines haha!
