Ya know, I saw this post about how Greta Getwig needs to hire professionals to help her write stories about or with POC in them and I gotta say...

That is not the kind of representation I want.

Like, I don’t think the problem is that white people tell white stories. White people SHOULD tell white stories. It’s their job to tell white stories because they’re WHITE. And a great sum of them deserve to be told. PLEASE. TELL YOUR WHITE STORIES.

The problem is that POC don’t have the same opportunity to tell their Hispanic, Black, Asian, Native American, Middle Eastern (etc.) stories on the same scale that the white stories get told.

And what I absolutely don’t want is Greta Gerwig (one of my favs btw) to go out here and make a movie about a Black girl’s coming of age because she could never understand what that’s like. No amount of research could give her the ability to tell that story with the nuance, gentleness and care that it needs. Not because of her lack of talent, but lack of experience. Just the same, as a Black woman, I could not properly tell a story about an Asian coming of age.

My main piont stands: representation is not putting black or brown or other POC bodies in films written for and by white people. It’s letting POC make those films instead.

Tl;dr : let my good sis Greta write her white girl films and let us colored folk write about us. Authenticity is an important aspect of representation.

whew.

so far my latest creative endeavor has been the most nerve wrecking and exciting yet. it’s still prose, but the way I’ve formulated the writing process, as well as my obsession with actually drawing the characters in hopes of eventually doing a few character pinups has had my brain going in every which direction lately.

but in the best way!

I’m actually...excited! And it’s been so long since I have been.
