Os dugongos estão intimamente relacionados aos peixes-boi, com suas metades superiores muito semelhantes. Suas metades inferiores, no entanto, são muito diferentes. Ao contrário da cauda em forma de pá do peixe-boi, os dugongos têm uma cauda com asas como golfinhos. Fingers crossed you’re enjoying your festive meals as much as this dugong enjoys eating seagrass. Dugongs are closely related to manatees with their top halves looking very similar. Their bottom halves however are very different. Unlike the manatee’s paddle shape tail, dugongs have a fluked tail like dolphins. It’s thought that because of this tail, dugongs were the inspiration for stories of mermaids! The fish in the shot are juvenile golden trevally. They hang out with dugongs to snatch any invertebrates spooked up by the disturbance. Eles crescem sua nova forma embaixo da antiga, e é por isso que às vezes parecem inchados antes de se transformarem. Seu corpo tem que ser macio para se retirar, e é por isso que ainda é branco brilhante como esse. Amblypygios fazem isso de cabeça para baixo. Você pode ver o exoesqueleto anterior segurando o teto, enquanto seu novo corpo maior surge. Nos próximos dias, ela ficará com vários tons de azul e rosa, enquanto seu corpo endurece novamente. To grow, invertebrates molt to shed their old exoskeleton. They grow their new form underneath the old, which is why they sometimes look swollen before they molt. Their body has to be soft to pull itself out, which is why it is still bright white like this. Amblypygids do this upside down. You can see the previous exoskeleton holding on to the roof of her enclosure while her new, bigger body emerges. Over the next few days she will turn various shades of blue and pink while her body hardens up again.
