ok so i need everyone to see these pics of flashpoint kal from flashpoint: beyond. For context, flashpoint is that one alternative timeline created when barry allen went back in time to save his mother's life, thus radically changing the course of events in DC. in this AU, thomas wayne became Evil Batman due to seeing his son bruce get shot and killed in an alleyway, wonder woman is evil and used to be engaged to aquaman, robin is the son of harvey dent, etc.

now. I know this all sounds horrible. but the upshot of flashpoint, to me, is that it's one of the craziest examples of clark whump in canon. in flashpoint, instead of landing with the kents, kal's rocket crash lands into metropolis, and as a baby he falls into the hands of the US government. the government promptly sticks him in an underground prison cell and "raises" him as a subhuman lab rat in total isolation, conducting various experiments and physical/psychological tortures on him. he never sees the sun.

when the events of flashpoint come to a head, kal is freed by cyborg and the time traveling barry allen, and eventually helps them during the climax of the story. which, by the way, is already heartwrenching - he's been out of his horrible little cell for the first time in his entire life, and not even hours later he's already helping, when he has no real reason to.

ANYWAYS. flashpoint: beyond takes place after the events of flashpoint. At this point in time, kal has learned that he was supposed to be the first of an invading kryptonian force, and he shows up to recruit Thomas "Evil Batman" Wayne to help him, in possibly one of the most badass/scary sequences superman gets to have:

rip thomas. don't bring fists to a superman fight.

I really love that they have him speak in broken english the whole time, and that he's gaunt and stunted, and that he hovers everywhere instead of walking. all signs that he was abused; that he was never taught to be human, let alone treated like one. why would he need to walk if he wasn't concerned with blending in with humanity? why would he be taught english if his only purpose was to serve as a slab of meat to be poked and prodded at?

and then kal takes him to his sanctuary.

man, this just broke my heart. first of all, the implications of the fortress of solitude - which in the main timeline is a forbidding ice palace full of alien wonders, inaccessible to humanity - is instead in this timeline so thoroughly of Earth; that it's been overgrown with joyous greenery and teeming with the very species that caused him so much pain. that kal took all of that lifetime of torture and wretched loneliness and turned it into something so breathtakingly beautiful is just.... I mean just look at this exchange:

It's heartwrenching that kal even in this timeline still finds a way to be superman; finds it in him to help protect and shelter others despite his own massive trauma. superman prime saying "people matter" is one thing, but there's something uniquely beautiful about flashpoint kal saying it; like he of all people should know the worth of a life that everyone else has deemed worthless. and it's compounded further by the fact that he's preparing to lay down his life against an invading kryptonian force. By all accounts, these are his own people here to save him; this is his family - quite literally his own father - promising comfort and love and companionship amongst his fellow kryptonians for the low, low price of revenge against the species that tortured him mercilessly his whole life, who treated him as less than a dog, who made him believe he would always be alone. if kal were anyone else- if kal were thomas wayne - he would probably have said yes, or at least wavered on it. but kal does not hesitate. to superman, no life is too small. it's staggering, and kind of humbling to think about, and though it's only a few pages out of the overall story it remains one of the most thought-provoking and in-character examples of superman writing I've read recently.

I'm hoarding way too many Batman AUs.

Anyway Batman being like Gordon Ramsay led to me discussing a Cooking Show AU with my partner in crime @weimitsu. So here what came out of that.

For some reason, instead of fighting crime, the members of the Justice League are famous chefs. 

Wayne Bakery is a famous house in Gotham and Bruce is a very skilled baker. He makes high-quality cakes. He has a special interest in making hyper-realistic cakes as well (you know, the thing that makes you doubt that the world isn’t cake).

Clark is his best friend obviously and they work together sometimes. But Clark has a terrible sense of taste. One time he ate a real calculator instead of Bruce’s fake one and still found it delicious (that’s when Bruce found out about it as well…).

Clark is still a famous baker because of his sunny personality, he is especially popular with moms and aunties. Very charismatic and expert in hearty dishes he learned from his Ma.

Clark wrote a book about pies one day especially to force Bruce to sit in his home and eat all the pies. 

Bruce also made a guest pie in the book. (Bat themed with a chocolate crust, but still beginner-friendly for Clark’s audience)

One day, Bruce and Hal Jordan were the hosts of a cooking show (Great British Bakeoff style) and everyone fell in love with their dynamic and banters. They have “Most famous batlantern chefs moments compilations” on YTube.

As they were popular with the audience, they started having other emissions together to play on their duo. On one of their emissions, they had to exchange their best friends (Barry and Clark) as partners. It worked super well between Barry and Bruce and now Bruce thinks of replacing Clark permanently (/hj).

Other trivia about Bruce. He started with Alfred’s recipes and is very knowledgeable about British desserts.

Yes Bruce has high-quality cakes in his bakery because he loves the challenge but he is also good for beginners. He should have a cooking with kids show.

And he goes baking for all the charities in Gotham.

There's a program in Arkham to rehabilitate inmates by giving them an apprenticeship at Wayne's Bakery. Bane did especially good and is famous for making the world's biggest Pan De Muerto bread.

Anyway, I think it’s a very fun and wholesome AU.

“People are always asking, “Who’s the real man? Superman, Kal-El, or Clark Kent? Batman or Bruce Wayne?” And they do this completely unrealistic and, I’m sorry, completely ridiculous thing where they pick the mask as being the sole personality. As if these different titles do not encompass many aspects of a greater personality. As if there isn’t a person behind that mask. As much as Bruce Wayne wants to assume that he is no longer a human being, but instead a symbol greater than himself, he is not that symbol; he is a man in a mask who uses that symbol. Bruce Wayne is certainly Batman but Batman is not Bruce Wayne. And as much as we’d like to think that the human being underneath the mask who lost his parents as a young child isn’t really the man we see when we look at Batman, but that The Bat is the main personality, that’s not doing Bruce Wayne any justice. The Bruce Wayne the population of Gotham sees is not the real Bruce Wayne. Bruce Wayne is a man who, after suffering a great loss, decided to go to the ends of the earth in order to protect the innocent and fight to ensure such tragedies will come to an end. The Bruce Wayne that Gotham sees is not who he is. The Batman that Gotham sees is not who he is. Bruce Wayne inside the suit is who that man really is. Then you have Superman, born Kal-El, raised Clark Kent. There are so many people who try to say that he’s Superman, he’s Kal-El, he’s Clark Kent. What they fail to take into account is that this is a very human man. Even Kryptonians, for all their differences, are very human. This is the story of an immigrant. From the time he was a baby, Clark Kent has lived on Earth and grown with a human family. His heritage is important, yes, but they did not make him the man that he is. His heritage, without his biological parentage, simply gave him his powers. It’s his Earth family who made him a man deserving of having them and capable of wisely using them. But the goofy and insecure Clark Kent that Metropolis sees is not the real Clark Kent. The real Clark Kent is the man that his parents welcome home when he visits their ranch. I would wager that Batman and Superman are never more themselves than when Batman calls Superman ‘Clark’ and Superman calls Batman ‘Bruce’. Both sides of their major personalities are inherently acknowledged in this exchange. They both see before them a person who is treated like a god but is really just as much a man as they themselves are. That’s why you’ll rarely see them referring to each other as anything by name in each others company. They both look directly at the myth and see the man. Yet they recognize, at the same time, that the man is the myth.”

I also agree with Paul Dini’s assetion that the “true” person is neither the ultra-grim Batman, nor public Bruce Wayne, but the man who sits in front of the Batcomputer, in costume, but with the cowl pulled back, putting the pieces of the latest puzzle together. There’s a reason Ra’s al Ghul respects that person enough to refer to him as “The Detective”.

And for Superman, I think of the exchange between the Spectre and Norman McCay in “Kingdom Come”; McCay - Sometimes I forget he’s not actually from Earth
