sooooooooooooo ... you're basically a former cowboy who traded country living for the big ol' city
I feel like I'm being judged XD
I don't live near a horse farm or in the country anymore, yeah. But I mostly "left" to pursue an education. Then life just happened and I haven't found my way back yet.
Idk if I want to own an actual farm in the future, but I wouldn't say no to living in the country again. Mostly for nostalgia reasons :3

I don't know enough about horse riding to have an actual opinion about it, but isn't it dangerous to have a kid riding a 1k lb animal without a saddle or something to steer it?
My neighbors were extremely responsible with their horses and especially when it came to riding them. I wasn't allowed to ride any of their younger/less trained horses and always either had an adult riding with me or next to me.
I learned how to ride with an actual saddle and a bridle first and only then learned how to free ride after asking to be taught to later on. The specific horse I learned how to ride (both riding styles) was an older mare who was a retired therapy horse and was extremely gentle. She was also insanely patient with me and would follow me around when I was taking care of the other horses. So an absolute sweetheart and always happy to have the attention of a younger kid haha
Needles to say, don't attempt free riding on your own. Like, just don't. Especially if you don't know the horse or it's temperament. And even then, always use caution and pay attention to your horse since you can never tell if/when they'll suddenly be startled or get agitated out of nowhere.
End of horse PSA XD

So I grew up in kinda the south (Florida, always it's own special case) and the term 'cousin' was only ever used for relatives. It wasn't strictly limited to 'child of a parent's sibling.' Pretty much any relation more distant than immediate family got the title of 'cousin' even if the actual relationship was 'child of your second cousin,' or 'sister-in-law's brother's kid.' But kids of close family friends weren't cousins, even if they were close enough to take vacations together.
That's really cool to hear. I think I grew up with something similar where it didn't matter how distant the relation was, they were just called your "cousin" without all the extraneous info.
It's also interesting to hear about how the same words/terms can be used differently in other parts of the country.

Disapointed you're not a texas trans cowboy but happy someone else remembers vcrs and old windows 98
Would it help if I mentioned that I grew up helping my neighbors on their horse farm and learned how to ride bareback and without a bridle? :3c

sory if this is a dumb question but how can someone be your cousin but not your cousin?
Not a dumb question at all, anon.
Idk if it's a southern US thing specifically, but it's not uncommon for the kids of close family friends to be referred to by adults as your "cousin/cuz."
Though, I didn't realize we weren't actually legit cousins until I was in my late teens, if I'm being honest. That was a genuine shock for me, especially since I kept referring to him as my "cool cousin from Texas" up until that point haha

If it makes you feel better, I'm a little older than you yet.
I made the switch from floppy disks to USB thumb drives in college. In middle school, they had us all buy one (1) zip disk as part of our school supplies.
ZIP DISKS!!!!!!!!!
I COMPLETELY FORGOT ABOUT THOSE, HOLY SHIT!!!! D:

guess I'm also gonna hop onto the invasive questions train and ask: are you from the South? Noticed how often you use "Y'all" and I've been imaging you with a Texas country accent
So sorry to disappoint, anon, but I'm not the least bit Southern.
I grew up near the border of the southern US and around people who were from the deep south so I've picked up a bit of slang 'cause of that.
I did spend a few summers in Texas, now that I think about it. I think that's where I might have actually picked up the "Y'all" from, possibly from my cousin/not cousin.
Tbh I mostly just remember him using "Y'all" a lot while we were watching Ducktales or when he was showing me his pet spiders. Fun times.
