Hair is hair... however, when I wear my hair like this, it elicits responses from people without speaking to *me* first. Many compliments, but anxiety festers because my hair is seen as threatening in a variety of environments. On my birthday, a random white man grabbed me, tugged my hair and asked me if it was real and then claimed I was “just trying to bring a throwback look to 2019”. A full moon drive, pre-thanksgiving, taking the backwoods of Ohio and Pennsylvania, led me to living (dancing) one of the greatest nights of my life .
