Liberté, égalité, fraternité… And now we shall become heroes without names!
Oscar falls deeply in love with André and refuses any other man asking for her hand in marriage. However, history will soon sweep away the two of them in its wake… What starts as a protest against new taxes evolves into the reopening of the États généraux, which includes commoners among its members. When the representatives of commoners declare themselves the National Assembly and oppose the king, he and his entourage resort to deploying military forces to retake control of the situation. Thus, Oscar’s squad receives orders to be on the march. The night before that fateful day, Oscar accepts Andre into her heart and body… On July 13, 1789, upon finding out that the army opened fire on civilians, Oscar declares herself an ally of the citizens and engages in battle with the king’s troops. However, Andre dies amidst the fierce combat. Losing Andre, whose feelings Oscar finally returned, leaves her devastated. Nevertheless, Oscar refuses to give in to sorrow and leads her soldiers to storm the Bastille…
Photo caption: The fall of the Bastille as a symbol of oppression provided momentum to the revolution. This is the place where Oscar drew her last breath.

Music section revamped
In honour of André’s birthday, I revamped the Music section. I removed the podsnack embeds because some of the songs I uploaded were not working, which I realised quite late unfortunately. Instead, I made a playlist of classical music pieces played in the Rose of Versailles on Spotify and listed all the tracks with descriptions of the scenes they play in.
Most of the scenes are from episodes 19 to 30 because these are the episodes I am most familiar with. They happen to be the ones I managed to tape on VHS that fateful summer in 2001 and watched over and over again until they did re-runs in winter. Good times.
The playlist is not an exhaustive list by any means but at least it is something. There are still many pieces that I am missing. Like the aria in the beginning of episode 24, when the news of Jeanne’s escape from prison is all the buzz in Paris. Or like the opera performed on stage when Saint-Just kills Duke Monsabert in episode 30. And then there are pieces that sound familiar, but I can’t remember the scenes they play in. Namely these are,
Bach - Brandenburg Concerto No. 1 In F, BWV 1046: IV. Menuetto, Trio 1, Polacca, Trio 2
Bach - Orchestral Suite No. 1 in C Major, BWV 1066: V. Menuet I alternativement - Menuet II
Bach - Partita No.1 In B Flat Major, BWV 825: Prelude
Telemann - Musique de table, Part II: Quartet in D Minor, TWV 43:d1: IV. Allegro
It’ll come to me eventually I guess... If you can match these with any of the scenes, please do write to me. By the way, I am no classical music enthusiast, so please excuse me if I’ve made any mistakes in writing the titles.
A huge thank you goes to Il Palazzo della Rosa and to Les Roses de Riyoko, for the titles of some of the pieces and hints about finding the scenes where they play.

Here is an update! According to here (thanks so much minjay, whoever you are) the BGM in episode 19 is an interpretation of Bach’s Prelude in C Minor, BWV 999. As for the arrangement we hear in episode 19, that still remains a mystery.
You know that piece of music playing in the background in episode 19 (“Farewell, Little Sister!”) when Rosalie sneaks into the armoury of the Jarjayes manor in the middle of the night and grabs a pistol to kill Madame Polignac? This piece of music isn’t included in any of the soundtracks and I have been trying to find its source for years since song identifying technology first became available.
Today, this app that I am using gave me this: “Saucers in the Sky” by Righteousness Gone.
So, Righteousness Gone is apparently a rap duo from the US active since 2000s and this song appears in their album called “Judas Christ” that came out in 2013. In it, the duo is basically rapping to the same background music in episode 19. I’m not linking the song here because it is marked as having explicit content and, honestly, I cannot make out the lyrics myself. So I didn’t want to take any chances.
Obviously, the music wasn’t composed by the duo as the timeline doesn’t match and it has a distinct 70s feel to it. Unfortunately, I cannot find any information about who the composer of the original piece is. Maybe it is written in the booklet of the album, which I have no way of acquiring. So that is that.
