maybe this is the reason you don't like the lyrics, but in my opinion, filter is satirical/sarcastic... like he's exposing the expectations that are on him based on his public persona and his role in the group... considering the vibe of the rest of the album, which is about the struggle with their public personas vs individual emotional needs etc.
You know I was really hoping for that to be the case as well. I love when they write songs that are v on the nose n tongue in cheek but I can’t figure out if that really is the case with this one. As far as i know he didn’t write the song himself but the concept is his idea which makes it even more compicated. Only comments I’ve found on this subject are from his Spotify interview -
“I came up with this song ‘Filter’,”
“Filters can be the things within a camera application, or social media, but it can also mean people’s perspective or prejudice.”
“I took these various meanings and expressed it into the song of how I want to present myself to the world in many different ways.”
“I think I’ll be able to show a new side of me that’s very different from my previous tracks, “Serendipity” and “Lie”.”
This doesn't really convince me that the song is satirical but I might just be looking at his reply from the wrong perspective. So yeah I hope you are right.
