Spells vs. Rituals
Something that I see very often is the blurred line between a spell and a ritual. In the beginning it was difficult for me to differentiate the two and when it was appropriate to perform one versus the other. So I’ve sorta developed my own breakdown system of each to help me decide. This is purely only my opinion, based on how I’ve worked and through my experience. This is in no way definitive.
First let’s discuss the differences between a spell and a ritual. A spell is usually performed when there is a call for change. You raise the energy, program it through visualization, and release it. You influence. A ritual is a ceremony acknowledging a special moment or event using gestures and words. It is not so much about a call for a change, but rather the action filled with purpose. I tend to reserve this for the more ‘heavy’ stuff.
Now let’s talk about what a spell and ritual actually consist of.
Anatomy of a Spell
The Intent – the specific desire or goal of the spell. What do you want to obtain?Ex. Wealth, Stop Gossip, Cleanse *keep in mind that these are just general examples. When performing a spell, be as specific as possible
The Type – the kind of spell you will be performing to obtain the intent. This should reflect the intent. What is the role of the energy being used? Ex. Attract (wealth), bind (stop gossip), banish (cleanse) Other Examples: Anoint, Attract, Banish, Bind, Curse, Dream, Food, Glamour, Hex, Jinx, Protection, Ward, Wish
The Mode – how you want to raise and direct the energy. The primary action of the spell. This should reflect the combination of the intent and type. How are you going to symbolically represent the intent and type? Ex. Jar, knot, incense Other Examples: Bath, Candle, Charm, Construction (making or building something), Cooking, Destruction (destroying something), Crystal Grid, Jar/Container, Jewelry, Meditation, Release, Restrict, Sachet, Smolder, Speak/Chant/Sing, Tea/Potion, Topical (balms, salves, oils), Writing
Anatomy of a Ritual
The Purpose – the specific reason for the ritual. What are you acknowledging?Ex. Purification, Divination, Release Other Examples: Celebration, Channeling, Dedication/Honoring, Dream Work, Esbat, Meditation, Rite of Passage/Initiation, Sabbat, Self-Work, Summoning, Worship
The Primary Ritual Act – building energy and the action performed. What action will you take to achieve the purpose? Think verbs… Ex. Bathing, tarot, crying Other Examples: Chanting, Dancing, Drinking, Eating, Screaming, Scrying
Hopefully this helps someone when deciding whether to perform a spell or a ritual. You can use this guide to help you when writing your own spells and rituals as well. I would suggest coming up with lists that revolve around what you do in your craft.

Magical Waters & Recipes Every Water Witch Should Know About
A few things before we get into this! Not all of these magical waters are meant to be consumed. Any waters you plan to ingest should be made with bottled water for safest results. Any herbs used should also be researched. Always always always be aware of what you’re putting into your body! Also this is for reference so it is very shorthanded with the recipes. You should have no problem finding more detailed versions online or in a book. Be sure to label your waters as specifically as possible. Date made/collected, herbs used, safe for consumption, etc should all be included. Lastly, any waters can have appropriate food coloring and/or glitter added to them as well.
Natural, to collect:
1. Rain - renewal, cleansing, adds extra potency to spells, peace, relaxation
2. Storm - strength, confidence, motivation, force, protection, cursing
3. Snow - purification, transformation, ending for a new beginning
4. Swamp - binding, cursing, banishing, warding
5. Sea - purification, protection, psychic abilities, healing, cursing
6. Lake - knowledge, memories, reflection, emotions
7. Pond - binding, restricting
8. River - moving on/forward, change, cycles
9. Dew - beauty, youth, fertility, love
Simple, charged waters:
1. Sun - purification, positivity, energy, solar magic Bask in the sun from sunrise to sunset
2. Moon - purification, balance, lunar magic, adds extra potency to spells Bask in the moonlight overnight
3. Rainbow - positivity, luck, hope, unity, money Use a mirror or another reflective object to make a ‘rainbow’ and leave water there for at least one hour
4. Shadow - strengthens secrets, hides truth, deception Bask in an area that receives no light whatsoever for a day
Advanced, to make:
1. War - banishing, cursing      - put nails and some spanish moss into a glass jar with one cup of water and let it sit for several weeks.      - once the moss decays and the color turns dark and murky, it’s ready      - meant to be thrown at the feet or on the doorstep of recipient      - can also be used as a protective barrier around the house
2. Indigo - protection, purification, empower charms      - mix one cup of water with 1 mexican anil ball
3. Infusions - usually used with fragile herbal matter      - pour 2 cups of boiling water over 3 whole flowers      - cover and leave until it cools completely      - strain into a glass container with a non-metallic lid      - store in a cool, dark place
4. Decoctions - usually used with dense herbal matter      - simmer herbal matter with 8 oz water      - do this until matter becomes limp & pale      - strain, store in a cool, dark place
5. Inks      - light a candle and hold the back or bowl of a metal spoon ABOVE the flame until it is covered with a black soot      - scrape off the black soot into a small bowl. *warning: this can be extremely tedious and time consuming      - add hot distilled water, one drop at a time, to dissolve the soot      - slowly add powdered gum arabic until desired consistency is achieved      - you can also try beet, grape or any other dark colored juice      - invisible ink is something you can try as well
6. Flower Essences Honestly, I’ve seen a few different ways to make these floating around online. I do not have enough experience with these to claim which is the ‘right’ way to do it, but, I do suggest you research it to see if it is something you’d be interested in making and utilizing in your craft. Especially if you have your own garden or greenhouse. It involves cutting fresh flowers and putting them in the sun with absolutely no shadows passing through it. I believe the process is similar to a gem essence. These are meant to be consumed, so please do your own research before attempting.
7. Gem Essences/Elixers      - place a cleansed, non-toxic crystal or gem into a clear glass bowl or bottle with water      - leave in sun or moonlight 6-12 hours      - remove crystal and add 2/3 preservative (this is the mother essence)      - add 7 drops of the mother essence to a small glass dropper      - top off with 1/3 preservative and 2/3 water (this is for use)
There are plenty other forms of magical waters and this list is by no means complete. Again, a simple search can find you more detailed versions or variations on these recipes. But I believe these are the most valuable to any witch who likes to use water in their craft.

Witchy Journals
When it comes to journaling, I’m a sucker. And as I’ve become more ‘seasoned’ and have expanded my personal path, I’ve realized that I can’t easily keep all my information and experiences bunched up into one book. Plus, it’s way more organized. So I've compiled a list of different journals you can keep and what to include in them for you! Enjoy!
1. Grimoire - more of a reference tool, as a lot of the information in this journal won’t be changing. This is a long-term book, so use something that will stand the test of time.  - history of witchraft  - celebrations  - types of magick  - correspondences  - god/goddesses  - lore  - religions
2. Book of Shadows - half reference/half journal. Use it to record your workings and reference later to see what worked, what didn’t.  - recipes  - spells  - rituals
3. Tarot - can be used in a similar way for other types of divination.  - card meanings  - speads  - readings, be sure to record things like the date & time, weather, location, any extra tools used, what you asked, interpretations & an extra space to record notes for a later time
4. Dream Journal - record your dreams. Many things can influence our dreams so be sure to be as detailed as possible. Some things to record:  - what you dreamt about  - interpretations  - date  - lunar phase  - emotions before/after sleep  - any food, drink or substance used before sleep  - sleep patterns/how you slept (kept waking? tossing & turning? restful?)  - reoccurring dreams
5. Moon Journal - can be expanded into Astrology Journal as well  - lunar phases  - esbats/different moons of the months  - planning with the moon  - astrological events  - zodiac  - planets  - houses  - aspects  - personal natal chart
6. Gardening  - indoor plants info & care  - outdoor plants info & care  - germination info  - propagation info  - soil & compost info  - poisonous plants  - pests & control  - diseases & treatments  - common issues, signs & corrections
7. Some little things you can add to your personal planner/journal  - gratitude  - little intuitions  - goals  - meditation/yoga tracking  - plant watering tracker

I love that being a witch actually requires you to read. I love reading. There's just something so magical about opening it to find out what's inside.

Daily Witchin
Some daily witchy things to do when you don’t have much privacy or time to yourself.
- light an incense to refresh the energies for the day - practice visualization. you can do this before you roll out of bed in the morning (unless you’re likely to fall back asleep), before bed, in the shower - meditate. like visualization, try to do this when you can, if you get the slightest fifteen minutes to yourself. If you can’t, don’t stress it. Set yourself up for a smaller goal of 3 times a week. Remember, the goal is meditation, not trying to meditate. - touch or talk to your crystals and flowers. tell them good morning, ask them how they’re doing. communicate with them. - reality checks, if you lucid
Try to keep your daily witchins to a short list. We want to incorporate our craft into our already busy schedules, not add more to-do lists.
How do you incorporate your craft into your daily lives?

Writing Your Own Spells
So when I first started my path, I knew I wanted to write my own spells. I got alot of inspiration from other blogs online, but I just felt silly saying things and such that I didn’t feel like was me. It wasn’t personal enough, especially since I was beginning this path on my own. I’ve been practicing for about six months now (by no means very long) but I was having trouble keeping track of all of the components of my spells. So I made a template for myself to keep myself organized when writing my spells, and I thought I’d share it with you all!
1. Spell Name As a beginner, keep it simple. You can number spells that have the same intents.
2. Goal/Intention These will get more specific as you go.
3. Timing Date & Time, Day of the Week, Lunar Phase. Personally, that’s what I follow. But you might want to add astrology aspects as well if you’re into that.
4. Ingredients This is where I was having a hard time of keeping organized. I divided this part into the following sections: - Candles - Incense/Smudge - Oils - Herbs, Flowers, Trees, etc - Crystals - Tarot Cards - Tea - Etc. (any magickal waters, flower essence, tinctures, inks, sigils, basically anything else you are incorporating into the spell)
5. Chants/Words I keep mine as short as possible so they’re easier to memorize.
6. Steps Start with setting up your supplies, casting a circle (if you do that), grounding and centering. Always have a closing (dismissing elements/deities, opening the circle, etc) as to not leave any unwanted energies just floating around.
7. Results Obviously you’re going to have to come back to this one after some time.
A few other things: - Read over your template a few times before performing the spell to avoid any loop holes or things you may have missed. - The ingredients section is where you’ll have the most freedom. You do you. Use things you have, don’t worry if you’re not incorporating Tarot or tea into your spells. Work with what is important in your craft. - Have fun! Hopefully this helps!

I’m currently planning for the full moon right now. Honestly, the full moon seems to be my most powerful time. For the December full moon I started working on my psychic abilities. My intuition right now is weak, I can feel it. Hopefully with a little more practice by the end of the year I can be better.
As for this full moon I wanted to try dream work. Made a bath, dream sachet, and a tea with the Mexican dream herb. I’m pretty excited for it.
As my path continues, I feel like it’s coming together more and more and I’m finding what is actually working for me. Especially with my book of shadows. There’s already so many pages that I could go without. I know, you read it everywhere: don’t think you have to know everything. That’s true, yes. But I wasn’t sure where my path was going to take me so I atleast wanted to get to know the main basics of everything. So I really need to start following more blogs that pertain to: 1. psychic work 2. dream work 3. tarot 4. crystals 5. tea 6. lunar magick 7. herbs (preferably more on the exotic side) 8. water magick (elemental)
If anyone has any suggestions that would be much appreciated!

Happy New Year
…to my fellow witches! I hope everyone had a great holiday. Unfortunately for me and my family we were all sick during the holidays. We’re feeling much better now but I still feel weak and lethargic. Since my last post I've felt my connection to the moon grow stronger as well as my connection to water. I’ve finally gotten an altar going as well so now I don’t have to keep all of my things in a box in the corner of my bedroom. I’m really quite loving it, I’ll post a picture soon.
I’m super excited about the Full Moon coming up this month. Super moon, full moon, lunar eclipse all in one. What a great way to start off the year, don’t ya think?! I was thinking about doing a protection spell for that, not sure yet. Last full moon I did a psychic abilities/awareness bath ritual followed by my first Tarot reading for myself. I think that was my most intricate or in-depth ritual I've done so far but I honestly feel like it was my most powerful. If you’re interested, here’s what I did:
1. Take a shower. To me this is a pretty important step as you can wash away the dirt and all from the day. 2. Smoke marijuana. If you’re not a weed smoker, just skip this step. Weed helps me to relax both my body and my mind 3. Set up my Tarot reading for afterwards. Since I have an 8 and 6 year old at home I like to keep my things portable I guess. I have a small wall mirror that I covered in a bed of dried roses, lavender and black obsidian chips. I laid my deck on top with 3 candles* (white, blue, purple) and crystals** (lapis, fluorite, rainbow moonstone, sodalite, clear quartz, citrine & selenite) 4. Set up bath. For my bath soak I used pink sea salt, powdered milk, a cinnamon stick, calendula petals, anise EO, and lemongrass EO 5. While my bath was filling I brewed a cup of Pu-erh tea (my favorite) with just a bit of honey. 6. Put your bath soak in after the water stops running. I sat in the tub for about 20 minutes chanting (personal***), meditating, and sipping my tea 7. When finished, save a cup of the bath water to dispose of later. Make sure to air dry as much as possible to keep the bath herbs from being wiped off 8. After I finished my bath I simply wrapped a towel around me and did my reading immediately after. Give the cards a good shuffle, used a 3 card spread
*you may use more, or less, or different colored candles **I don’t have enough crystals to do an actual crystal grid, but I did lay my crystals in an upside down pentacle shape (excluding my selenite) with my Lapis (favorite!) in the center. I realize that for some people that might be a little off putting, that’s fine. For me, everything I did had a purpose toward my intent. Always go with what feels right! ***I write my own chants, it’s more personal to me. I think it’s great when people share ideas and I do get inspiration from them, but it just feels more natural to write them myself.
Well, that’s about it for now! Given the new year and all, I’ll try to post more. No promises though.

Haven’t written in a while. Not sorry about that. I’ve had a lot of personal things going on. I quit my job. I really just needed a break. Since my transfer and the loss of our family dog, I just couldn’t focus at work and I constantly felt drained. I’m not ashamed about not working. Yes, things will be tight financially. Yes, I’m going to have to be more on top of house work. Yes, there will be times I feel stressed or bored or lonely or whatever. But I’m not trying to focus on all the negatives of the situation. This will give me a chance to focus on myself mentally, spend more time with my family, and work on getting the house in better shape.
Since I’ve last written, I’ve been doing a lot of research. So much, actually, that I had to scrape my idea of a typed BoS. My book just kept growing the more research I did and the cost of ink, paper, protectors, etc. was getting to be too much. So I went and bought a Zequenz notebook. I use these for my bullet journaling as well and they’re my absolute favorite. I feel more comfortable about making mistakes in my BoS than I do in my journal, though.
Anyways, I've been thinking more and more about the path that I want to follow. I've never been one for religion, so the whole gods and goddesses thing doesn’t really appeal to me. Except maybe for Egyptian culture gods and goddesses. For some reason the mythology there fascinates me. I also like the idea of ‘worshipping’ the planets. I’m still on my journey of finding my path, but these are the directions I've been leaning towards. Any advice would be welcome.
Since I’ll be off of work for a bit I plan on getting into a solid routine of house work and family stuff. I also plan on incorporating magick into my routines. I don’t want to overwhelm myself though (I know how I am) so this is what I’m thinking. Plan spells and rituals around the Sun and Moon. Sabbats, Esbats, lunar phases, etc. Again, any advice is welcome.

My First Book of Shadows
Book of Shadows, Grimoire. Not sure if there’s a difference, but they seem to be the same thing to me. So as I was doing my research online, I started to accumulate a lot of information. It was disorganized, chaotic and a full on hot mess, scattered throughout my phone and laptop on multiple platforms. I need to put everything together so I started making a BoS. I’m really in love with bullet journaling, but because I knew I wanted a basic understanding of certain areas that I wanted to go back and add to later, for now, a journal was out of the question for me. I had an old folio binder lying around so I decided that would be perfect. I opened up word and made title pages. One for each subject I wanted to research. On the title page I also divided up the subject in sections. There’s an abundance of information out there so I felt this would keep me organized even further. I also left blanks for subsections, so I could go back and add more to later. I even have wishlists on some of my sections for the herbs, crystals, or tarot decks that I want to get in the future.
I really like flipping through the pages I have so far. Even doing that helps me have a greater understanding of things and how they all correlate. The sections I have so far are: Tarot, Crystals, Herbs, Spells, Recipes, Astrology, Celebrations. The subsections are completely up to you and your personal preference on how you want to divide the main sections up. If you chose to do it this way, it’s pretty easy and a good way for you to go back and reference things. All you need is paper, [plenty of] ink for your printer, and time to type everything up.
This is my personal preference and you should follow what works best and feels right for you. The more connected you feel with your Book of Shadows, the better.

So let me start off very clearly. I haven’t performed any rituals or spells yet. As I was doing my research one thing that kept popping up was the importance of cleansing, consecrating and charging your magickal items before using them. So that’s where I wanted to start. The best time to do a cleansing is during the Waning Lunar cycles. I’ve started building up my items for my altar slowly. Candles, my tarot cards, abalone shell for incense, athame, etc., etc. Now that I've gathered a good small amount of things I decided it was time to cleanse everything I had so far. I used the power of Air to do my cleansing with a white sage smudge. Honestly, I thought I was going to maybe feel dumb or silly starting off, but I didn’t. It felt natural, and easing. This is one of the simplest things to do so I suppose it’s supposed to feel like that. The next thing I’ll be doing is consecrating my items. The best time to do that is during the Full Moon or Waxing Lunar cycle if you can’t wait until the Full Moon. That at least gives me time to gather more supplies, if necessary.
To me, there are four main things you need to be a witch: 1. Intent - like I've said before, I've read this everywhere. If your intent is strong enough, you will get what you want. Without intent, the energy is unaware of where to focus it’s power. 2. Cleanse, Consecrate, & Charge - cleansing gets rid of unwanted energies. Even if the item is brand new and has had no previous owners, there is still energy attached to everything. Consecrating items is like attuning them to you and your intentions. Charging items is like charging a battery. It brings in full energy to your items for use in ritual and magick.  3. Patience - I haven’t really read this anywhere, it’s just what I have felt is really important, especially if you follow certain time guidelines. This is actually beneficial for me since I have a full-time career and two children in school. But nothing happens over night. Things might not turn out exactly as you had planned or maybe you fucked something up. That’s okay, keep practicing and try again. Also there are other factors, like finances. Unless you’re rich, you can’t buy everything at once, just starting off.  4. Practice - yeah, this is everywhere, too. But it’s true. The more you do it, the more comfortable you’ll feel, and the better outcomes you’ll get. You must crawl before you walk, walk before you run. You get it. Research your craft, collect the items you feel you need, practice, perform, master your craft. There is so much to learn in the craft and I feel like it can be very overwhelming at first. Many of the areas correspond with one another so this can put you in a pickle. What I chose to do was gather as much basic info as I could on topics like Tarot, Crystals, Herbs, simple spells, and I typed it up in a way that made sense to me. Now that I have a pretty basic understanding of certain things now I can start diving deeper into each subject. I still do this a few things at a time. There’s so much info out there and I tend to get bored or overwhelmed very easily. So I’ll focus a day on herbs, the next day crystals, etc. so I develop all of my skills at a steady rate. Some people chose to focus on one subject solely at first and master that skill before moving onto the next. That’s fine too, whatever works best for you.
My next post will be about the start of my Book of Shadows, why I did it the way I did, and my future plans for it.

Learning Tarot
So basically, my delve into witchcraft started with an interest in Tarot. Prior, I had no knowledge whatsoever about the topic so I started researching online. Most of the things I read said that I needed to pick a deck that I felt connected with and that I felt like I could work with. Given that I currently don’t drive, this was a (continuing) problem. I couldn’t go out shopping for a deck so I looked online. I made a list (I make a lot of lists) of the all tarot decks that I found aesthetically pleasing. Then I went on to look for a good beginner’s book to help me get started. Ultimately I bought The Hermetic Tarot. I read online that it was a good ‘starter’ deck. As for a book to help me learn, Seventy-eight Degrees of Wisdom. I've become a little stuck now, though. Most beginner books on Tarot follow the Rider deck. Personally, I don’t find the Rider deck attractive at all. I wanted to learn the right way, but I also don’t want to buy a deck that I don’t like and can’t connect with. Also, the book does, in my opinion, follow a lot of religious beliefs that I don’t relate with. So I started cross-referencing my Hermetic deck booklet with my ‘beginner’ book and then things started to not match up or have complete opposite meanings. I love the detailed but black & white look of the Hermetic Tarot, but should I buy a deck that follows the Rider style more to help me have a better understanding? Or is there another book recommendation that anyone has?
Also, if there is any accounts anyone recommends that I follow, please let me know. Anything that has to do with witchcraft (crystals, astrology, herbs, spells, tarot, etc)

The Who & Why
Hey! I’m Amanda. I recently had a peak in interest with witchcraft and everything that relates to it. In starting my Book of Shadows, I've come across so much information and honestly, it’s been a little overwhelming. I’ve searched and researched on almost every social media platform. So, I’ve decided to start a tumblr to document my journey along the way. Maybe it’ll help others on the same journey, hopefully it’ll help me connect with others. To teach and guide me. Let’s start by going over who I am first I suppose. I hate describing myself so bare with me.
I’m 30 years old, a wife of 7 years, a mother of 2 beautiful children. I recently had a big change in my life. I won’t go into details but I don’t drive right now and I had to relocate my job. I was working an hour away from home, where I made more money. I was working there for 6 years so I had built a really good clientele in that area and most of my friends are there. The move was sudden and fast and took a great emotional toll on me. I went through a few weeks of deep depression but eventually I decided I needed to do something. I felt lost and alone, I needed an outlet, a hobby. Then, in late September, I stumbled upon some tarot cards on pinterest and I was intrigued by all the beautiful designs and different artwork. I remembered how I was sorta ‘into’ them as a kid but didn’t every truly understand them. So then I decided I was going to research that, and in doing so, I came across witchcraft. I've always been a ‘darker’ person. Goth, wears black all the time, into true crime, piercings, tattoos, blah, blah, blah. But when I was young, I remember my grandmother, who I was really close with, telling me that she had seen and felt spirits. She had great intuition and I've always had a great connection with her. Possibly, she passed something along to me. Silly to think, maybe. But then there’s this thing that happens to me once and a while. I guess like deja vu. Things happen, or songs or movies come out, or something along those lines happens and I feel like I KNOW it’s happened before. Anyways, I’ve never really been a religious person. Especially after my grandmother passed away. But I have read the Satanic Bible and I feel like I can relate to that more than anything. If you haven’t ready it or don’t understand that it’s NOT about devil worship, just stop right here and peace out. I believe what I believe and I feel the way I feel, no one’s opinions are going to change that, thanks.
Okay, that’s enough about me for now. So, why am I here and why am I doing this? Like I said before, it started as an outlet, self discovery I suppose, and my curiosity grew from there. I do not believe in god & the devil, but I do believe in the universe and it’s power, so this seemed like the right direction to go. Now, I do run into things that counteract my disbelief, but I don’t acknowledge it or I change the perspective to it. Example, instead of believing in a deity, I believe in the universe or myself. Simple things like that. Also, all of my interest started within Samhain, coincidence, maybe. The main thing I've gathered from my research on witchcraft is the importance of intent. My intent in all of this is happiness. To answer the questions who am I and what do I want out of this life.
Couple more things before I go: 1. I’m new to Tumblr, so just a warning, I am Tumblr-illiterate so if you do talk to me, don’t expect me to know the ins and outs yet 2. I’m always up for suggestions on reading material or anything else 3. Do not comment if you’re going to put me or anyone else down. This is a learning experience for me (and others, hopefully) so there is no need for any negativity up in this bitch, thanks! 4. I will not share any personal information or social media accounts on here. For my family’s protection, and because I’m pretty solitary on this venture. I live in a small, conservative town in Pennsylvania and I don’t want this to interfere with any personal things concerning my kids and husband. 5. Eventually I’ll make this page look much prettier and aesthetically pleasing. The OCD in me has to.
