@ my family who thinks im a serial killer in training for liking vulture culture
It always makes me laugh my ass off when I see people screaming about how “Y-y-you can’t say you love animals if you love taxidermy!!! If you like taxidermy you hate animals!!!!”
Cause it’s like……. lmao no that’s not how that works
Animals are absolutely incredible, phenomenal things and I’m not going to stop loving them just because their heart stopped beating. Just because something is no longer alive doesn’t mean it’s no longer a beautiful, amazing incredible thing.
I love animals. Ever since I was born I’ve loved animals. When I was a kid I would go outside just to catch bugs, spiders, snakes, lizards, anything that I could get my hands on I would catch it and observe it.
I took dead bugs and put them on top of ant hills to feed ants, I moved worms off of the pavement (I still do), and now that I’m older I’m constantly doing wildlife photography, even taking time to observe and photograph animals that most people hate, like ticks.
I spend most of my time and focus on photographing animals like snakes, bugs and spiders, to help show and teach people that they’re not aggressive, monstrous animals that should be needlessly killed.
But I also love taxidermy, skeletons, and pelts. Just because something dies, doesn’t mean you need to automatically throw it in the ground and forget about it.
Taxidermy, skeletal articulations, and even pelts can teach us SO much. They can teach us about anatomy, about science, about how the body works.
Without taxidermy, no one would be able to stand face to face with a great auk, or a passenger pigeon, or a quagga or a thylacine, or even animals that are still alive today. Not everyone is fortunate enough to have money to go on a safari in Africa or to go explore the jungles of Borneo.
Without skeletal articulation, most people wouldn’t know that giraffes and humans actually have the same number of vertebrae in their necks, or that dolphin flippers have the same number of fingers as human hands, or that moray eels have a second pair of jaws in their throat.
Not everything is black and white. Death is not something to be afraid of and disgusted by. Everything dies so that more things can grow in their place.
