you never fail to look forward to your bus ride home, and it’s almost too outrageous to believe that it’s all because of a cute stranger.

with his hair that nearly falls past his eyes and the small smile he sends your way before walking past you to his usual seat, it’s not too difficult to develop a crush on him. you’d later know his name as lee jeno.

but for now, there are four things that you do know about him. one, you both go home late. two, you both live in apartment buildings outside of campus. three, your apartment buildings are the bus’ last stops — yours comes before his. finally, he’s the reason you don’t ever miss your stop.

it’s not your fault that exhaustion creeps into your system as soon as the bus begins its journey back into the city, your eyelids growing heavy the minute you rest your head on the window. every single day, you feel his hand on your shoulder, gently shaking you awake. you’ll look out the window, night has already fallen, to find the bus outside your building. you’ll turn to him with a sheepish smile and a quiet ‘thanks’. he’ll shake his head, and with a wave of his hand, tell you that ‘it’s no problem’.

usually, the cute stranger sits in the row behind you. in the seat behind yours. but today was different. today, he sat next to you. the only thing that remained the same was the tiredness that filled your senses the second the bus began to move.

jeno stares straight ahead, trying to think of anything he could possibly talk about with you. he’s been seeing you on this bus for months now, it’d be sad if he doesn’t strike up a conversation any time soon. at least that’s what his friend jaemin has been telling — really more nagging — him. the bus has been on the road for fifteen minutes when it finally hits him : he doesn’t even know your name yet! just as he’s about to part his lips to speak, turning his head towards you, jeno feels a weight on his shoulder. his eyes grow wide as his chin barely brushes the top of your head, you had fallen asleep. right on schedule.

he couldn’t help but watch the gentle way your chest rose and fell with every breath, unable to stop his gaze from trailing over every single aspect of your peaceful features : the length of your lashes, the curve of your lips, the apples of your cheeks. his heart beats faster with each passing minute, but he tears his eyes away from you. this is creepy, don’t look at them too much, you don’t know them, he thinks to himself.

jeno is as still as a statue, keeping his eyes on the window of the opposite row. he watches as several buildings pass by, watching the way they light up as the sun slowly sets on the city’s horizon. a wave of serenity overtakes him, broken when he feels you shiver from beside him.

he knows he has a jacket in the backpack beneath his feet, and he moves as slowly as he can as not to disturb you. an idea flashes in his mind; he also takes out a small piece of paper and a pen, more than aware he won’t be able to talk to you for the duration of the ride. jeno places his jacket over you as a makeshift blanket, unable to help himself from smiling when you snuggle into the material.

soon enough, the bus arrives on your stop. you feel someone shaking you awake, an unfamiliar scent of a cologne flooding your senses. you shift in your seat for a couple of seconds before opening your eyes, only to be met with a familiar face, a soft expression that made your heart flutter for half a second until you’re hit with a wave of realization of what had just happened. of what you had done.

“i’m really sorry!” you panic, any and all traces of tiredness completely leaving your senses, now replaced with complete and utter embarrassment.

jeno laughs, adding a teasing tone to his words, “it would’ve been fine if you didn’t drool on my shoulder.”

“i drooled on your shoulder?” you ask, just a little too loudly, grateful you and him are the only two passengers left on the bus.

“no, i was just teasing.” he smirks, but the gentlest gaze remains in his eyes. jeno stands from his seat so you can make your way out of yours.

you sigh, reaching an arm out to hand him his jacket back, “here. thank you, by the way.”

“keep it for now, it’s cold out. you can give it back to me tomorrow.” jeno pushes his jacket back towards you, his eyes trained on his feet as the tips of his ears turn pink as you properly put the jacket on.

you nod, and without another word, you get off the bus. however, you don’t head inside your apartment building just yet, watching it drive away instead. stuffing your hands in the jacket’s pockets, you feel a piece of paper. a smile spreads across your face when you read the note :

i think you’re really cute.

it’s not that he’s a lousy roommate or that you disliked him in any way; you just didn’t know him. you had first met through a mutual friend. they knew jeno was looking for someone to split rent with and that you happened to need a place to stay. they promised you he would give you privacy and assured jeno you were excellent roommate material. with that, arrangements were made and soon enough you moved in together. of course, it was a bit awkward at first but you two eventually got used to each other’s presence. although you were never in the same room for too long and oftentimes went days without speaking, you coexisted.
