Sorrel
Lovely Lupin (2023)
Aluminum and acrylic paint
11 x 14 inches
A collage I created as a gift for a very important person in my life. There are various symbols of who they are, symbols I now readily associate with them. I mostly chose colors that I associate with them as well.

Sorrel Herc & Coco (2023) Aluminum and acrylic paint 11 x 14 inches
A collage I created from aluminum cans based on the two dogs of my favorite hair stylist. Their names are Hercules and Coco and they love to chase squirrels. It is currently being displayed somewhere, but after it has been rotated out of the exhibit it will be gifted to the stylist as a (very) late holiday gift.

A portrait collage of recycled aluminum that I made of a friend as a very late holiday gift, based on their aquarium that I briefly helped look after. It is currently on display in an exhibit, but will be given to them as a belated gift once it has been returned! If you like this piece, check out my Instagram Page!

Some designs I recently did for an alternative radio station. The top version is for hoodies and the bottom two are sticker prints. I may eventually sell variants of this sticker without the station information on my future etsy shop.

Sorrel Sunflower Friend (2022) Aluminum and acrylic paint 11 x 14 inches
A portrait collage of recycled aluminum that I made of a friend as a holiday gift. Probably one of my favorite collage pieces I've made so far, I find the challenge of making a distinct outline of a person with abstract aluminum to be really fun. This one got me really thinking about how to refine the process and streamline my collage process. I was worried the green cans wouldn't contrast the teal background enough, but I'm really happy with how the final version looks. Work in progress pics can be viewed below the cut.

A few simplistic digital paintings I did for a computer art course. The prompt entailed recreating three photos upside down, and then flipping them right side up. It was a unique challenge that really got me thinking about the shape of everything. I wanted to give them a fuzzy, dreamy, kind of abstract look, and I think I managed to do so pretty alright. Source photos are all taken by me.

Sorrel Weekend Walk (2022) Digitally altered aluminum 6.40 x 3.40 A collage I made for a digital design class. I thought it would be interesting to attempt a collage similar to previous ones I've done where I used aluminum cans as material, but this time I'd use digitally scanned photos of them. It was really nice being able to use digital tools to cut out each shape and resize, layer, and rotate them as needed. This collage is based on one of my favorite parts of the downtown area in a city I've spent a lot of time in. Check below the Read More to see in-progress versions!

Sorrel Alumee-num (2022) Digitally altered aluminum 10.00 x 13.33 A portrait I made for a digital design course. Taking after my previous aluminum collage pieces, this portrait was created from scanned and digitally altered aluminum cans. In order to emphasize the stained glass inspiration, I created a second layer which I lightened, blurred, and made semi-transparent. While I'm happy with how it and my landscape piece turned out and definitely enjoyed making use of digital tools to streamline the process and achieve certain effects, I think I ultimately prefer creating these aluminum collages from the actual cans themselves. This is NOT a knock on digital art, I just like having the art in person and seeing how it all looks when the shapes are roughly chopped out by hand and glued onto the canvas. But I will definitely do more digital ones at some point in the future!

Rory Sorrel Caffeine Is Killing Me (2022) Collage, aluminum 14 x 17 Inches
Being reliant on energy drinks to get up and at it early in the morning isn't fun. They can also be a not so fun component of eating disorders. Unfortunately they're tasty and even if I end up feeling sluggish in the evening, feel them screwing up my teeth, or find myself having trouble falling asleep at night, the boost they give in the morning is very good at selling itself. I don't even like or really drink regular soda at all, but Monster is owned by the insidious Coca-Cola company which is a major reason I'd like to just cut them out entirely. I've been trying to gradually fizzle them out of my diet and drink tea or low-caffeine black coffee instead, but it's been a bit challenging. I'm glad I've held onto a lot of the cans, though. Seeing them all boxed up is a good blunt reminder of just how much I've consumed and that I really need to stop, and I knew inspiration for something involving them would eventually strike me. Like the previous piece I posted, it's inspired by stained glass art of Gothic churches. I really like how it turned out.

Rory Sorrel Aluminum Stained Glass Collage (2022) Collage, aluminum and various materials 17 x 14 Inches
A collage I made of recycled aluminum cans and various materials. I spent a few weeks studying church interiors for an art history class with the Gothic section largely focusing on the stained glass windows, with this collage in particular being (very loosely) based on the south transept Rose Window of the Chartres Cathedral. I learned a lot about chopping up, flattening, painting, etc. aluminum. it was a bit of a pain at first and like usual I got a LOT of superglue stuck to my fingers during this learning process. But I was still happy with the final result and it motivated me to get right into making another stained glass inspired collage with aluminum directly after.

Rory Sorrel Gothic Friction (2022) Collage, recycled note cards and construction paper 18 x 20 Inches
A collage inspired by Bram Stoker’s Dracula. It was based on my experiences returning to college in my mid 20s after many gap years, major financial struggles with medical debt, and struggling with ableist undertones affecting classmates and myself in an interpersonal studies course that was a stealth speech class. It was a deflating experience seeing the way everybody was treated week after week, people trying their best only to have their energy sapped over the most insignificant quirks. Once the semester was over, I had arranged and torn apart note cards that I prepared for a speech on gothic fiction, writing over some of the pieces many of the stray thoughts that had passed through my mind while taking the course. It was a cathartic experience and a great way to release all the frustrations that built up over the months.

Rory Sorrel My Friend Keyboard Bot (2022) Various recycled materials
An exploration of breaking down an object (in this case two defunct keyboards) and contextualizing all of its pieces into something completely different. Keyboard Bot is characterized as being friendly and expressive with his open arms in contrast to his artificial pieces. Mechanical pencil for scale.
