当地に移住しさまざまな野菜栽培をするようになってしばらくすると、ニンジンや夏野菜に根瘤が多く観られるようになってきた。線虫の仕業だ。それまではまったく意識していなかったのだけど、限られた圃場の中ではどうしても連作が避けられず、次第に特定の病害虫の影響が顕著になり、対策必須な状況となった。
線虫については専用の農薬があり、それを使うのが一番手っ取り早い。実際に被害が酷い場所には緊急処置的にそれを投入しているが、いかんせん値段が高く、無収入の私にはふんだんに購入して散布する財力はないのよね。
そこでマリーゴールドを試してみようとなった。このキク科の植物が分泌する「α-ターチエニール」という物質が土壌の有害線虫に毒性を示すらしい。花は観賞用にもされるから種の入手は容易だし、価格も安い。農薬とは比較にならない程の低コストだ。
個人出品者から他の野菜種と一緒に購入したマリーゴールドの種は混合種だ。初めてで効果の程もよく解らないから、まずは試してみようということで種類に拘わらなかった。春先にポットに播種し、しばらくして発芽、成長して定植をする大きさの頃には早くも花が咲き始めた。
花の色は株によって赤だったり黄色だったりで異なるが、さらに模様のバリエーションもいくつかあるようだ。いずれにしても一重咲きで余り高くならない丈の特徴から「フレンチ種」だと思われる。ちなみにアフリカン種は花がボールのようになり、草丈は1メートル程にもなるらしい。
草体からは独特の匂いがする。花を見るのは好きでもこの匂いを嫌う人は多いようだ。私はどちらかというと好きな匂いなのだが、いかんせんそのパワーが強烈なのよ(笑)。まあ害虫退治にはそれぐらいじゃないとね。
花の寿命はせいぜい1~2週間だが、ドンドン増える脇芽から次々に蕾が出て花が咲くから、株全体の開花期はとても長い。上の写真は12月の状態だが、まだ沢山の花が開花している。この間にも結実した種が地に落ちているので、2年目からはそれなりの量が自然生えしてくる(ポット蒔きと比べると発芽確度は低い)。
さて肝心の防線虫効果について。有害線虫除外成分は根からも分泌されるので、対象野菜と混植するだけで効果があるとされている。そこで初めの年は畝の両端に1~2株ずつ植えて試したが、畝の大きさに対して株が少な過ぎたせいか十分な効果が得られなかった。なので翌年、自然生えした株も使い畝の半分に狭い株間で密に植えてみたのだが、今度は多過ぎて肥料奪われたか混植しているメイン野菜の育ちがイマイチに(苦)。
そんなわけで、次回は程々の量の定植に留めようと反省しているのだが、とりあえず大量に育ったマリーゴールドが目の前にあるので、これを土壌にすき込んでやることにした。剣先スコップで畝に一定間隔で穴を掘り、初冬でもまだ綺麗に開花している草体にやや躊躇しながらも引き千切りその穴に放り込んでいく。
最近流行の微生物資材などを一緒に放り込めば分解は早いだろうけど、それにコストが掛かったら意味がない。初夏に夏野菜を定植するまでにはまだ半年程有るわけだから、何も急ぐ必要ははないのよ。ただ根だけでなく葉や茎、そして花まで全て土壌に入れるから、有害線虫の��らにはこれまでになく有効な打撃となるだろう。そんなことを考え、ほくそ笑みながら土を被せ埋め、最後にたっぷりと散水した。

えんばく(その1)
植物には動物の名を冠するものが多い。イネ科植物も例外ではなく犬麦(イヌムギ)、鼠麦(ネズミムギ)、鳩麦(ハトムギ)、烏麦(カラスムギ)などがあるが、今回から何編かに分けて挙げていくのは燕麦(エンバク)についての話である。ちなみに名前の由来は、熟して二股に開いた小穂の形がツバメの尾に似ているからで、燕尾服と名付けられた衣装と同じ理由。
エンバクは全世界で毎年2500万トンも生産される穀物で、人間の食料や家畜の飼料として利用されている。オートミールはこのエンバクが原料だ。ただ米作中心の日本では、緑肥や草マルチ資材、あるいは線虫忌避などの目的で栽培されることが多いようで、種子もそういった用途向けに販売されている。入手は比較的容易で値段も高くはないが、100均やペットショップで売られている「猫草の種」も歴としたエンバクなので、こだわり無ければこれを使うと家庭菜園には程良い量でコストパフォーマンスも良い。むしろ無消毒種子であることを歓迎し敢えて後者を選んで使う人もいるようだ。
エンバクの播種は真夏と厳冬期以外は可能なので気軽に利用し易い。他の野菜の播種や定植に忙しくなる時期からちょっとずらして作業できるからね。三角ホーなどで軽く溝を掘り、パラパラとスジ播き、覆土鎮圧して散水しておけば1週間程で発芽する。
季節によって多少異なるが、成長速度はとても早い。畝肩に播いて、ある程度丈が伸びたら青刈りして畝に被せ草マルチにするのが私の使い方の定番だが、ざっくり刈り込んでもしばらくするとすぐ元どおりの高さまで成長するので、だいたい1箇所で3回以上は刈れるね。根が割としっかり張るから畝土の流出防止にも貢献する。大規模農園だと機械を使って刈り込み、緑肥として土中に鋤込むのが定番らしいけど、人力でやると大労力掛かるし、充分分解するまでその場所使えなくなっちゃうから私はやっていない。
エンバクをバリケードにして、その内側で風や害虫にやられやすい野菜を育てるって使い方もできる。完全防御は期待できないが、人工資材を使わないで済むメリットがある。事が済んだら草マルチとして流用出来るし、最終的には生物分解で堆肥化してゴミも出ないからね。
種子を収穫しようとする場合は地域によって適した播種時季がある。当地においては秋に播いて冬を越させ、翌年の6月に穂がクリーム色になったところで収穫する。大麦やライ麦同様、梅雨時の収穫になるので晴天時を見計らってやらなければいけないのが気を揉むところ。とりあえず棹ごと刈り取って収穫し、天日下で良く乾かしてから保管する。出来るだけ湿気を除去してカビさせないことが重要だ。それさえ気をつければ、細かい分離作業は梅雨明け後にゆっくりやればいい。
最悪棹ごと埋めても発芽するだろうけど、小穂レベルまで分離しておけばスジ播きしやすい。自家採取して循環栽培するのは多少の手間が掛かるが、数年繰り返して要領を得た現在では簡単なルーチンワークでしかない。種を購入する費用が不要となり、気軽に様々な利用をするのに充分な量の種子を自前で確保できるのは喜ばしいことであり、自給自足生活の観点からも理に適っている。そうなるとさらなる活用法についても探求してみようということになり、必然的にある野心が生まれるのであった。
