As the camera flickers to life, three young men and two young women stand in front of you, each one wearing a different, yet somewhat unreadable expression.

"Finally! Took me forever! Ahem... I'm Lucien Mulberry, and I'm excited to meet everyone~."

"I'm Yuki Miyamoto. Don't try anything, Darling. I guarantee if there's anything you're trying to pull on me, I'm already ten steps ahead of you, though it would be most amusing to watch you try~."

The man chuckles, seeming to be off in his own little world, but still somehow mysterious in an eerie manner.

"H-Hijiri Okinawa... Sorry, I-I'm kind of sensitive to loud noises... B-But I'm really excited to meet new people-!"

He seems very soft-spoken and gentle, but very fearful of a potential bad interaction.

"I'm Shiori Matsuzaka... I don't want any trouble. I'm just trying to mind my business and search for what I need. Don't be weird and we'll get along well, I think."

She doesn't seem overly serious, but more determined.

And finally, the final girl flashes you a seductive smile as she grins.

"And I'm none other than Miyu Toraijin, niece of Beelzebub, himself! And of course, you probably know me as the Ultimate Vampire. Stay out of my way and I won't make you my meal... unless you're into that~."

She winks, opening her mouth to show you a set of fangs before retracting them. They're actual vampires?! What do you do?!

Teasing Phrases (Lucien x Reader)

It was the same tone, the same arrogance, the same aura since the day you had met him. He had joined your court after his paternity had been revealed, learning the ins and outs of ruling over people from his father with great attention.

Lucien would be a wonderful High Lord when the day came but that was the only good thing you could say about him. As one of the higher ladies in the Day Court, you were often in his company during social and political events. For whatever reason he had latched on to her, picked her out of the hundreds of others to torment for his enjoyment.

He hadn't known just how well you could dish it back, however.

"That gown looks ravishing on you, Y/N, will you be wearing it later tonight at the pleasure house?" Lucien smirked, clinking his glass against yours while ignoring your eye roll.

"As charming as ever, Lucien. It is a wonder how you manage to keep the ladies off of you," You looked around dramatically, feigning a gasp when your eyes connected back to his. "Oh wait, they seem to be purposely avoiding you."

"You would know all about being avoided, wouldn't you, pet? How long has it been? Years?" His tone had dropped and your gaze turned furious, fingers tightening on the champagne flute before you steeled your shoulders and turned around.

"About as long since the Archeron sister rejected you, my Lord." You snarled over your shoulder while walking away, your heels clicking loudly against the floor as you made your way to the hallway to get some air.

By the Mother, you do not understand just how he knew what to say to get under your skin. Whether it was a cocky smile, taunting words, or even the way he brushed past you in the palace, he was always there. Always waiting to catch you on your bad days.

He was the most frustrating man you had ever met. You hated him. You hated the way he smirked at you. You hated the way his words made you feel. You hated the way his body towered over yours when he would lean in to mock you.

Lucien Vanserra was the bane of your existance. Nothing more, nothing less.

"That was a low blow, Y/N, and you know it." An angry voice said from behind you, your head turning before you could stop it. "You know how I hate speaking of that part of my life."

"And you know how I hate speaking of my ex and yet you nearly invited him to dinner the other night." You retorted with a jab of your finger in his chest. "Do not speak with outrage when you can't take what you dish out. That is your problem, not mine."

"Do not touch me." Lucien hissed, knocking your hand away while backing you up against the wall.

"Or what? What will you do?" You challenged, raising your chin in defiance as he glowered at you. "Yell at me? Hit me?"

"If you do not hold your tongue, pet, I will treat you exactly how you are asking to be treated." His tone was dangerous as your faces were now inches apart, both of your chests rising in quick succession from the adrenaline.

"And how is that, my Lord? Is it the way you treated Ela-" Your lips began to turn up in a smirk before you let out a sharp cry, one of his large hands grasping a fistful of your hair while his body pinned you against the wall.

You could feel his hardness pressing into your thigh, could see the fire raging in his eyes, but you were not afraid. For when he looked into your eyes he saw the exact same expression.

"Do not speak her name." Lucien seethed, baring his teeth. "I shall treat you like the brat you are, the little cocktease that you have been since the day I met you."

Before you could refute him he had his lips on the column of your throat, his mouth burning into your skin as you let out a small whine of need. Everything between the two of you, the fights, the stares, the jealousy, it was all coming to a head.

"I don't think you have the gall, Lucien Vanserra." You dared, grasping the fine material of his shirt before shoving him sideways so now you were in control. "I think it is you who needs to be treated like the tease."

His face darkened with desire and when your lips connected once more, his hands wrapping around your waist to pull you impossibly close, you knew you would be dancing in the flames of lust tonight.

Certain fandom arguments continue making the rounds while completely lacking any common sense (like the Lucien "yelling" that Elain is his mate).

Another has to do with this line and peoples fixation on how it "proves" Lucien doesn't know Elain:

And I wondered if she preferred to have torn and sweaty hands, if the dirt and cuts were proof of her labor. Her joy.

If what Feyre says has any truth to it, any truth at all, then shouldn't Elain be gardening without gloves?

Let's forget about magical gloves for a second.

In the real world, this is why people wear gloves:

Gardening gloves are gloves worn for the protection of your hands when doing garden and yard work.

you might want to consider wearing gloves if you are about to work with anything with thorns, plants that can cause irritation,

to keep your hands clean, provide a better grip when using garden tools and can provide some form of protection, especially from splinters or branches

No matter the project, it helps to have the right pair of gloves to protect your hands from dirt, scratches, and the general wear and tear that working in the garden can have on your hands

There are absolutely no articles that suggest people wear gardening gloves in the hopes that they will get cuts, scratches and dirt on their hands.

They wear gloves to avoid those things because cuts can get infected and the dirt entering the cuts can cause even greater health risks.

And not a single person buys and wears gloves in the hopes that their gloves will tear, that would be a waste of their money and again, a health concern.

But Elain doesn't garden without gloves, we have proof of her wearing them throughout the series:

Sounds like a good time right? Elain must have had a giant smile on her face with that one. Those gashes and thorns in her hands clearly a cause for joy! 🥳🎉🎈🪅

The truth is, Feyre saw Elain act indifferent about Lucien's gift and couldn't figure out the reason so she had a random thought that doesn't actually hold up to inspection. All she knows is that in ACOFAS Elain still wanted a human man and is avoiding Lucien but the reader knows it's not because Lucien doesn't see Elain or that Lucien didn't get her a gift we all know (using logic) she'd have loved from someone else.

She's simply refusing his gift in the exact way Nesta refused to accept Cassian's gift except Elain is too polite to throw it back in Lucien's face (not to mention Lucien wasn't there at that moment) so instead she sets it aside aside pretending she has no interest.

And anyone trying to simplify her refusal of his gift "she doesn't like him!" is someone who isn't paying attention to how this author writes and destroying Elain's character in the process.

If Elain, for real, does not like Lucien and will always pull away from him yet still accepts his gifts, than she's a pretty terrible person.

It was as little as Lucien's choice to be given a bond with Elain as it was hers, it was a shock to them both and I'm pretty sure no SJM male with a mating bond just walks away from the female (when both are fully aware) as long as she's not rejected their bond.

Elain does hold all the cards and Lucien is giving her time to decide which hand to play but if some in the fandom are so certain she has "no interest in him" and will never have interest in him then she's going to end up looking like a bit of an asshole for not breaking the bond yet continuing to take his gifts and never getting to know him.

No one is forcing her to get to know him however this is a scenario where she does owe it to him to set him free (if that's her decision) because they share an actual link to one another, he's not some random stranger in the club who she owes nothing to. People saying "she doesn't owe him anything" isn't really accurate. Taking time to work through her trauma is one thing, not making any major decisions until she explores her new world a bit is another, but dragging out their bond if she knows it's not happening is something else. When a broken bond can drive some male insane, Elain does have a responsibility to deal with her bond in a considerate manner and got drag things out if she already knows what she wants.

My version of Elain is simply one not ready to deal with the enormity of the bond and one whose a bit scared of the pull Lucien has over her and that seems more in line with the sister who is noted as kind and loving (while hesitant to get involved as she was early on in the series) rather than the cruel version some have where she hates Lucien, will never want to be with Lucien, yet hasn't broken the bond in nearly two years . 🤷

Edit and Disclaimer: for the Elriel fans losing their shit over this post, I am in no way suggesting Azriel IS exactly like Tamlin. EVERY single character in this series shares certain negative characteristics with other characters. That doesn't mean they are going to become exactly like those characters. It just means that one character might struggle with something the way another character did. No I'm not suggesting Az will lock up Elain. All I'm saying is that there may always be a slight imbalance in terms of how he views Elain. He may always struggle with feeling like he needs to protect her rather than them sharing the ability to protect one another.

Back to the original post:

It does not matter that Azriel is sweet with Elain.

It does not matter that he is attracted to her.

What matters is that he does not BELIEVE in her.

Which reminds me a lot of:

I've seen the above section used to prove that Az cares more for Elain than Gwyn. Because he was willing to die to get Elain back while he wasn't as worried for Gwyn. And that actually might be right at this moment in time, he probably does care for her more. But caring for someone, wanting to protect them, does not mean you will be right for one another in a relationship.

I think the more important take away in all this is that Tamlin was also willing to die to keep Feyre safe. He was willing to go out on dangerous patrols without her because he believed he was capable of being her protector. Was willing to risk himself because he felt Feyre was not able to defend herself.

I don't think Rhys would have ever left Feyre to fend for herself had she failed at any of the tasks he requested of her but the difference is he encouraged her to try. He was her backup but he let her take the reigns. He had such a strong faith in what she was capable of that he asked her to step outside her comfort zone so she could learn who she was and what she could do.

Azriel wants to protect Elain in the same way Tamlin wanted to protect Feyre. Yet in a very short time, he believes in Gwyn’s ability to handle herself. He's already cheering on her progress. Maybe that is because he hasn't yet developed feelings for her. But maybe for someone like Az, that's exactly what he needs. He needs to first witness that someone is capable of defending themselves before falling for them so he doesn't immediately default into protector mode.

Unfortunately he's already in that frame of mind with Elain and I don't see that changing.

Lucien might feel jealous. He might feel the urge to claim Elain as his mate and he felt the urge to get her out of the Night Court when he believed she was in danger before he knew her. But after knowing her for maybe a month, after looking at her as if finally seeing her for the first time, he left because he realized that was what she needed. He was not so overcome by the need to protect her that he was unwilling to give her space. When he found out she had stabbed the King, he said it in a way that suggested respect. Not fear or anger for having done something dangerous. Some might say that's because he doesn't care for her. But I say that even if the feelings aren't strong yet, the foundation is one of healthy love rather than possessive love.

Elain deserves someone who encourages and believes in her. Who stands to the side, ready to offer assistance if necessary but is secretly hoping it's not so Elain has the chance to prove how valuable she truly is.
