A FOR AFFECTION! how affectionate are they? how do they show affection?

lottie shows affection by physical touch :( and shauna loves spending quality time with you while lottie’s away at the compound.

B FOR BEST FRIEND! what would they be like as a best friend?

since being younger than them, they would be such doting and protective friends. you probably met through nat and you totally embarrassed yourself the first time you met them.

C FOR CUDDLES! would they like to cuddle? how do they cuddle?

they love sandwiching you inbetween them and kissing you on your cheeks :3

D FOR DOMESTIC! do they want to settle down? how are they at cooking and cleaning?

you love lottie’s cooking so much and you love shauna’s baking even more. just don’t let them switch, though. the only thing shauna can cook are scrambled eggs and toast, and lottie almost burnt the house on her 4th attempt at gingerbread cookies.

E FOR ENDING :( if they had to break up with their partner, how would they do it?

it would be such an emotional process!! so many tears :(( but lottie and shauna make sure that you know they love you very much and still would want to be friends outside the relationship.

F FOR FIGHTS! how would fights between them go?

it wasn’t you getting in fights, it was lottie and shauna. fights between them were extremely rare, but every couple fights. they would always be on separate sides of the house to avoid each other, and hated seeing them like that (and they hated seeing you so sad) and they made up with a couple of kisses.

G FOR GENTLE! how gentle are they, both physically and emotionally?

so gentle with you, always. rubbing your back at a random occurrence, or keeping a soft voice if you get a little overwhelmed.

H FOR HUGS! do they like hugs? how often do they do it? what are their hugs like?

SO MANY HUGS!! they both love giving u tight hugs and a kiss everyday (whenever lottie and shauna hug each other, they notice you get a little jealous scowl on your face, so they bring you in and dote on you.)

I FOR INJURY! how do they react if you get injured?

say you cut yourself while using a knife in the kitchen. you hiss a little and they immediately run to your aid, asking if you cut yourself. your hand is dripping with blood while you say, “its fine/it doesn’t hurt.” but they don’t listen to your protests. they take you to the bathroom and pull out the first aid kit, sanitizing and bandaging you up like a wounded soldier.

J FOR JEALOUSY! how jealous do they get? what do they do when they’re jealous?

they never get seriously jealous, only playfully. (ex. kissing and snuggling up to shauna in front of lottie and she starts pouting)

K FOR KISSES! what are their kisses like? where do they like to kiss you? where do they like to be kissed?

so many kisses get distributed between the three of you within the day, you couldn’t count them on all of your fingers. shauna likes to leave long, lingering kisses, smiling in adoration as she pulls away. lottie leaves many small little pecks to the cheek and lips (you whine in embarrassment as she does so, but she knows you love it.)

L FOR LITTLE ONES! how are they around children?

lottie loves them, smiling even when she sees one on a commercial. shauna thinks they’re adorable as well, until they start crying.

M FOR MORNINGS! how are mornings spent with them?

mornings with them can go from snuggling in bed for an hour without a peep from any of you, or morning walks/bike rides through the park.

N FOR NIGHTS! how are nights spent with them?

lottie’s cooking dinner with some music on in the background, clashing loudly with the sound of your video game on the tv in the living room. shauna’s sitting on the couch and you’re sitting on the floor between her legs, making sure she’s watching you the whole time. that’s a perfect night imo >_<

O FOR OPEN! when would they start revealing things about themselves? do they say everything all at once or wait a while to reveal things slowly?

this is hard bc if it was no crash au, they would open up so quick. they feel so comfortable around you, and they want to share everything. but if it was what happened to them in canon, i feel like they would have a little sit down and walk you through the whole wilderness thing. and obviously, you would never judge them. you understood they did that to survive.

P FOR PATIENCE! how easily angered are they?

it takes a lot for lottie to get angry but shauna is a little more uptight, but never around you.

Q FOR QUIZZES! how much would they remember about you? Do they remember every little detail you mention in passing, or do they kind of forget everything?

they remember stuff like your favorite movie and color and whatnot, but also the weirdest, miscellaneous stories you told over the years, and they would bring it up around you to make you smile. lottie and shauna are good listeners, they wanna make sure you know they’re paying attention to you.

R FOR RAINY DAY! what are they like in the rain?

it’s movie marathons all day. lottie makes hot cocoa of the three of you and finds some cozy movies. you end you falling asleep in the middle of the first one, curling up next to shauna.

S FOR SECURITY! how protective are they? how would they protect you? how would they like to be protected?

they are very protective people, especially shauna. she gets so mad someone at the grocery store or a restaurant is clearly checking you out, and she pulls you away because you’re too clueless to even realize.

T FOR TRY! how much effort would they put into dates, anniversaries, gifts, everyday tasks?

lottie and shauna love spoiling you with gifts, even if it’s just a random day. they would always say it reminded you of them and they just have to buy it.

U FOR UGLY! what would be some bad habits of theirs?

none. they’re my perfect Little angels

V FOR VANITY! how concerned are they with their looks?

the both of them have issues with their looks some days, but always gets compliments and praise from you throughout the day.

YES. oh yes, they would. if you’re gone a few hours out of town for a couple days, they’ll miss you so much. like shauna would be doing folding laundry and see a shirt of yours and get a little emotional 😭😭

anytime they go out without you (ex. going to dinner with the other yjs), you’re always asleep when they get back. and they love it so much. your soft little breaths, and how cute you look with the blanket up to your chin. they wanna kiss and hold you so bad but they don’t wanna wake you up :’) the cutest aggression is Real

“We’re back on in 2 minutes.”

Jungkook shifted in his seat with a toothy grin. “I wouldn’t go so far as to call myself a ‘producer’...” the singer-songwriter trailed off bashfully.

“But that’s what this album was: self-produced. Your first, in fact.” Yoongi countered.

The young artist didn’t deny the fact, knowing that his old friend had already slipped back into his radio host persona, even before the one minute standby was called. It seemed that, at least for the time being, Yoongi didn’t press the issue but simply followed up with, “What’s something you’ve been working on that’s been giving you trouble lately?”

Jungkook tilted his head slightly as he thought. His overgrown bangs fringed across his bottom eyelashes, giving him a rebellious devil-may-care aura, which would have made Yoongi roll his eyes if the younger man was actually anything like that in person. The radio host knew that under that edgy haircut and emo hipster attire, Jungkook was still that soft, shy kid from Busan with big round eyes and an even bigger heart.

He was glad to see his friend was still the same guy in all the ways that mattered.

“There is this one particular track that I have a vague concept and melody for but-” Jungkook’s response was cut off by one of the producers calling the 30 second standby.

Yoongi, still relaxed as ever, pressed for him to continue, “But-?”

“Oh, uhm, but the lyrics are still eluding me.” Jungkook finally murmured, fidgeting with his bracelet absentmindedly.

The host nodded sympathetically as he pushed a few buttons on the console in front of him before turning his head slightly to the window where the staff members were monitoring the phone lines and the clock as the show returned from its commercial break. “Welcome back to the show, everybody. I’m your host, DJ Suga with the sweet voice from Honey FM 06.13. My guest is the one and only Jeon Jungkook here to promote his brand new, self produced EP “Mixtape 1”. His single “My Time” was released earlier today and it seems as though the response is already overwhelmingly positive. Producer Jungkook?” Yoongi pauses for dramatic effect before quickly continuing, “Would you like to take some calls from your fans? I can see the switchboard lighting up like fireworks. What do you say, huh? Shall we take some calls?”

Jungkook simply chuckled at Yoongi’s subtle ‘producer’ jab, ducking his head in embarrassment. "Yeah, let's get it."

“We have Minnie on the line. Hi, Minnie, you’re on the air with DJ Suga and Jeon Jungkook.” Yoongi said.

“Oh my gosh! Hi DJ Suga! Hi Jungkook!” a cheerful voice filtered in through the headsets, “I’m in love with “My Time”. The lyrics seem so sad even if the song sounds so upbeat. What inspired you to write a song like this?”

Jungkook replied, “Thank you so much for liking the song. It’s a very personal piece to me and it means a lot to hear that fans are reacting so positively to the track.” He took a deep breath before continuing, “When I had set out to create this song, I had wanted to be as honest and authentic as possible with the lyrics while still staying true to my original vision for the song which was basically a bittersweet look at the last few years of my life and what it means to me as a young musician. I believe instead of seeing the lyrics as something sad, I see it as simply living life. Life has ups and downs, there are sacrifices but even greater rewards. A give and take, if you will.”

“Poignant.” Yoongi responded, “Thank you for calling in Minnie. Next caller we have is Ken. Ken you’re on the air with DJ Suga and Jungkook.”

“Hi guys. I just wanted to say that I really love both of your albums, Jungkook. “Euphoria” is on repeat daily for me.” a warm, tenor voice insisted on the other end. “When will we be able to hear you live in concert again?”

Jungkook gave a grateful smile and bowed unconsciously, almost hitting his head on the microphone in front of him. “Thank you so much for your support. I’m hoping to go on tour very soon, so please look out for tour dates on the official website. Until then, please enjoy ‘Mixtape 1’.”

Yoongi efficiently thanked Ken for calling in and pulled up the next call in the queue, “Hi Y/N, you’re on the air with DJ Suga and Jungkook.”

There was silence on the other end.

Unfazed, Yoongi tried again, “Y/N? You’re on the air.”

The unnerving silence permeated the air and just as Yoongi was going to move on to the next caller, a soft voice pierced through the quiet, “Hello? I-is it really you, Jungkook?”

Jungkook scooted forward into his chair. “Yes, hello.”

“I wanted to let you know that I truly love listening to you sing. Your voice is so beautiful and full of emotion. You truly have a gift...” There was a pregnant pause before the fragile voice rasped, “But I’m not sure how much longer I can stay to listen to you.”

Both host and guest were taken aback by the peculiar response but Jungkook recovered quickly and said, “Why do you say that? It isn't that late. Are you getting tired already?”

“I’m always tired nowadays.” The silence was heavy. When the voice returned, it seemed strained, as though simply speaking was becoming too difficult a task to bear. “Your songs used to be a source of such strength for me… but I’ve come to accept that it isn't going to be enough anymore. You see… I'm not doing too well.”

As the weight of the words sat palpable in the studio, Yoongi could see the panic in Jungkook’s eyes as he began to piece together what the caller was implying. Before he could jump in to save his friend though, the young musician simply asked, “How can I help?”

The voice returned this time with a quiet strength that masked the slight quiver of desperation, “Would it be too much if I could hear you sing for me… one last time?”

Jungkook looked up at Yoongi, his mind racing with a million thoughts. His eyes flickered to the radio host’s black guitar that hung on the wall behind his booth. Standing to his feet with resolve, Jungkook strode over to the guitar and carefully pulled it down from it’s hooks. He turned to Yoongi. “Hyung? Would you mind?”

Yoongi didn’t even blink. “Go for it, Jungkookie.”

Nodding his thanks, Jungkook made his way back to his seat and spoke softly into the microphone, “Y/N, please forgive me if this song is a bit on the rougher side as it’s still a work in progress.”

“I understand.”

Upon hearing a reply from the other end of the line, Jungkook closed his eyes in relief. He didn’t realize he had waited for that response with bated breath.

He began strumming a few cords before tweaking the guitar just a bit. “Now here’s the deal: I’ll be happy to sing this for you but you got to promise me that you’ll listen well to the very end, okay?”

“I will.”

Jungkook closed his eyes. Giving himself over to the music, his calloused fingers found its rhythm and began to strum a simple cord before taking a deep breath and allowing the song to take shape...

That faint voice of yours that grazed me Please call my name one more time I’m standing still under the frozen light, but I will walk towards you, step by step Still with you

Yoongi sat back, too stunned to actually respond to anything that had actually transpired over the course of the next few minutes as Jungkook began to croon over the gentle strum of his guitar, an acoustic ballad of longing and loneliness. Despite the lyrics holding such sadness in its tone, the song ends hopeful of a day where the vocalist could meet again with the person they had longed for. Yoongi imagines the final studio version of the song would sound nice with a piano in the mix, brushed drums for a percussion piece and maybe even some tinkling synths for character. Either way, he’s pretty sure he had just witnessed the creation of another major hit for the younger musician.

As the song wound down, the studio erupted into cheers, from the staff and Yoongi alike. Jungkook bowed politely before he spoke into the microphone, “So, Y/N, what did you think?”

There was no reply from the other end of the line. Yoongi looked towards the booth where the producers sat behind the glass window and took their nods as a sign that the line was still open.

“Y/N?” Jungkook repeated. “Don’t leave me hanging now. We had a deal. Are you still there?”

There was a beat of agonizing silence before a sniffle could be heard from the other end of the line. “Yes, Jungkook... I’m still here.”

200813 Lay Zhang's euphoric Mandopop songs celebrate his Chinese roots

Changsha, the capital of the Chinese province of Hunan, is a living, breathing, commercial giant. For 3000 years, it has been the epicentre of seminal developments in Chinese history -- from being the capital of Hunan during the Han Dynasty to the site where Mao Zedong was born and began his political career. It’s one of the fastest growing cities in the world, and a veritable star in the modern economic and industrial history of China.

But you can read all this on the internet. This Changsha is functional, aspirational -- the pinnacle of modern metropolitan fever dreaming.

Lay Zhang’s Changsha, however, has flavour. It’s bustling streets, loud noises and respite at a noodle shop between back-breaking work. That Changsha is his and his alone, seared into the tapestry of the man he is: “In Changsha, people work very hard. Every hour there is something to do. We have some really good noodle shops, and we love eating crawfish. We have good, spicy street food around every corner.”

“It feels lively and I carry that feeling around with me,” the Mandopop star says. “Changsha taught me to work hard and be proud of who I am.” In Lay Zhang’s voice is a focused calm that shows he’s thought his musical trajectory out, and it starts with “bringing China to the world”, as he says on “Lit”, the euphoric track that kicks off his celebratory two-part album series of the same name.

Despite growing up and being introduced to the entertainment world in China, Zhang’s popularity skyrocketed outside its borders, as a member of the South Korean boy band EXO. While he was flitting between South Korea and China for a time, a budding solo career and overlapping schedules in the mainland soon brought him back home. A series of releases followed, cementing his star status: his first studio album, Lay 02 Sheep, broke five records on Chinese streaming service QQ Music on the first day of digital sales. His second record, NAMANANA, entered the Billboard 200 at 21, making Zhang the highest ranking Mandopop artist in the US.

NAMANANA could have been turned into formulaic success for Zhang, but he felt it wasn’t enough. Despite the album juggling Chinese and English, it didn’t have enough of his homeland in it: “Chinese culture is more than language. You need to hear the instruments and the stories, see the clothes, see the places to feel Chinese culture.”

In its cultural triumph, LIT is the answer to all that. “If you want to be closer to people, you have to share with them. I am always about sharing, mixing and respecting each other's culture, but music goes beyond languages,” he explains. “I just want to start the path not just for Chinese artists to follow, but for everybody to share their music and culture on the world stage, so we all can learn and appreciate.”

Admittedly, it wasn’t just the listeners that LIT brought closer to China. It’s also a gateway for Zhang himself, to acquire a deeper understanding of his roots: “Thinking about my culture and the stories I want to share, it made me think bigger and deeper. So when you put in that time, you do feel closer.”

The album is a euphoric celebration of Lay’s identity. In “Lit,” Zhang reimagines himself as Xiang Yu, the legendary Chinese general who rebelled against the Qin dynasty to establish himself as a formidable figure. The title also stems from the Chinese word for lotus, 'lián huā', comparing Zhang to the flower that blooms amidst filth. “Jade” mixes Zhang’s trademark proclivity for hip-hop with verses from Farewell My Concubine, the tragic love story of Xiang Yu and his love, Concubine Yu. “Eagle” and “Fly” are replete with Chinese instrumentation, “Changsha” sees him break out his local dialect, while “Late Night” and “Mama” land firmly in the territory of modern Mandopop.

Chinese imagery, motifs and concepts pepper the album, and are visible in the duality of the tracks. While the first part of LIT falls back on traditions and legends, LIT: Part 2 pulls forth more modern sonic experimentation, infusing heavy beats and latin-inspired sounds on the tracks. This juxtaposition of past and present, life and death, is a very important concept to Zhang, who treats them like two sides of the same coin. For there to be space for development, parts of us need to retire.

“[In Chinese culture] we have yin and yang; they both give each other meaning. The album is divided into two parts to talk about the past and the present. It's a story about life,” he says. “You cannot have the present without the past [but] the past doesn't have to define you. My past experiences made me into the man and artist I am today. So the current experience I am getting will make the future me. It's a beautiful cycle, and the past and the present are one.”

Zhang functions in this constant state of hyperawareness about the cycle of time, something that’s become the bedrock for his persistence in the industry. In his 2015 autobiography, Standing Firm At 24, he claimed to always “work hard, work hard and work harder”, hoping that he would always remember the “feeling” perseverance left on his body.

“Where I stand determines the landscape I see, the kind of responsibilities I bear, the me I showcase and the future I live,” he wrote. Years later, Zhang still echoes that sentiment: “For me, I think I am not good enough, so I have to work hard. I am not a talented guy, so I need to update and develop.”

As he spearheads the movement of modern Mandopop, this determination to evolve contributes to his fluvial approach to music. Delicate Guzheng notes nestle in comfortably with heavy beats, and Mandopop expands to embrace EDM and R&B. The genesis of what he calls “Mixed Mandopop” can be traced to his own expansive taste.

“When I was young, I was listening to ballads,” he recalls. “I listen to a lot of music like pop, hip-hop, R&B, C-pop, J-pop and of course, K-pop. I want to listen to music that could explain what I am feeling now. Almost every genre, I wished they talked more about staying strong and fighting for your dreams.”

What he doesn’t find in the songs he listens to, however, he creates on his own, hoping that it helps the next generation of Mandopop stars: “I'm shooting a lot of reality shows (right) now. I get to see so many young people chase their dreams. That inspires me and it makes me want to work harder to give them the chance to share their stories and music with the world, so they can inspire other people. The people they inspire can inspire more. It's a beautiful cycle.”

My Favorite Songs of 2018 by Genre

There was a LOT of music this year that I still wanted to talk about but didn’t get put on the other posts I made, so I decided to put yet ANOTHER list together. (Read my top albums and EPs of the year lists if you want some context.) Buckle up, because it’s going to be a long one, folks. Here are the rules for eligibility:

The songs on this list most likely a) weren’t on an album that I loved in its entirety/didn’t feel that strongly about, b) were on an album that I didn’t have time to listen to, or c) were released as singles.

No songs from the albums or EPs I’ve previously mentioned are eligible.

I’ll try my best not to include singles that are for albums coming out next year (for example, I’m not putting Light On by Maggie Rogers or Party For One by Carly Rae Jepsen on the list.) Those songs will be eligible if I do a list next year. If I accidentally do put an album single on the list, it’s because I didn’t know ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Now, presented in no particular order, let’s get to some tunes.

POP

Used to You by Dagny: If you’ve been with me for a while, you know that I’m obsessed with Norwegian pop star Dagny, who I learned about through a recommendation from a friend. This song is one of her best: uptempo but melancholy, with honest, vulnerable lyrics about a strained relationship.

Crush by Tessa Violet: On the complete opposite end of the spectrum, we’ve got a bubbly sugar-pop song about having a crush on someone. It’s quite simple as to why I love this song: it’s just so joyfully adorable.

Sweet but Psycho by Ava Max: Okay, why is this not a hit the U.S.? It’s already gotten to number one in Norway, Finland, and Sweden, and is making a splash in the U.K. While I’m iffy on the lyrics, this song has one of the catchiest hooks of the year. It’s a giant guilty pleasure of mine.

Sucker Punch by Sigrid: This was named the eighth best song of the year by Time magazine and it’s easy to see why. It has all the elements that make up a Sigrid song (catchy melody, her signature raspy vocals,) but has just enough quirky touches and eccentric details to it that set it apart from the rest of her discography.

Do Right by Glades: Glades are so underrated, and I’ve mentioned them in a bunch of posts before. This song is them at their best, with one of the stickiest choruses of the year and a sweet synth riff.

Batshit by Sofi Tukker: I first heard this song in an iPhone commercial, oddly enough. I’m not going to say that this song is good, because I’m fairly sure that it isn’t good. The chorus is literally the word “batshit” said over and over and over again. But somehow, it’s perfect? It’s simple while at the same time having so many cool elements that it’s never boring. The funky bass riff, lowered vocals, electronic drop are all so infectious. Sofi Tukker are my guilty pleasure band, so check them out if you’re into strange dance club music.

Chasers by Bahari: This pulsating, electronic groove from California based trio (now duo :/) Bahari is like a dangerous lullaby. The twinkling production and harmonies keep the tone tense but enjoyable. I hope they release more music soon.

Cause You Did by Willa: Willa exploded onto my radar with her powerful, ass kicking anthem Swan, which she released back in 2016. I was so excited to see that she had released new music. This song is a bit different from her previous work, swerving more into the pop lane, but is still charming as hell. (Fun fact, she was in an episode of Supernatural. 10.13 Halt and Catch Fire. The more you know, am I right?)

San Francisco by Fickle Friends: This is my favorite song off of the Broken Sleep EP (I think it’s an EP? It’s only three songs... Check it out regardless.) Fickle Friends’s sound is so summery and tropical, it never fails to put me in a good mood, and this song is a perfect example of that.

F**k U by Kailee Morgue: A whole tell off anthem. Like her other material, this song balances darker material with a sweet and innocent sounding vocal delivery. Just make sure you listen to the uncensored version. Listening to the clean version is like listening to the radio edit of IDGAF by Dua Lipa or “Forget” You by CeeLo Green. It has no bite to it without the title word being said.

Emotion by Astrid S: When I first heard Such a Boy, I knew that Astrid S had the potential to be a pop starlet in the vein of Zara Larsson. This song is a lot of fun, with a whistling hook and Astrid S’s usual sassy delivery.

Cherry by Rina Sawayama: This is a whole BOP, from the whispery intro to the rushing production to the melodic, get-stuck-in-your-head chorus. This song is much like its title suggests: bright and sweet with just enough of a twang to keep it interesting, just like a cherry.

Baby Don’t Talk by LÉON: Of the two singles she released this year, I can’t help but like this one a little bit more (but don’t get me wrong, Falling is a whole bop and a half.) This song is just so likable, from the snappy percussion to the “ooOOooOOhs,” to the unforgettable melody. LÉON is so underrated, I can’t encourage you enough to listen through her three EPs and other singles. They’re all gold.

Daughter by L Devine: I can’t tell you how shook I was when I first heard this song. It’s L Devine at her finest, with a catchy melody, relatable lyrics, and just the right amount of electronic elements. This song is the wlw bop that no one’s talking about that everyone should be talking about.

Carousel by Skylar Spence: I found this gem thanks to Spotify’s Indie Pop playlist. The pulse to this song always makes me want to tap my toes. It’s like if the color yellow was a song. The lyrics are super cute, and the glitchy, robotic chorus just works somehow.

R.E.M. by Ariana Grande: While I found Sweetener as an album a bit uneven in quality, it’s still by Ariana fucking Grande. She could sing What’s The Fox Say and it would sound beautiful. This track is my personal favorite, with the cute little “bum bum bums” and the all around dreamy atmosphere. There’s also a funny amount of self awareness in this song, with the whole “’Excuse me, um, I love you,’” and “does this end?” It adds a layer of charm and personality that elevate this song. Ariana Grande is definitely the pop idol we need in the hot 100 right now, dear Lorde.

Sue Me by Sabrina Carpenter: What a fricking BANGER! This song rocked me to my core. Sabrina Carpenter is one of the best singers to come out of the Disney machine, and she’s always had potential for greatness (remember Thumbs? That song slaps.) There’s something visceral and inexplicably powerful about this song, I feel it right in my gut. It’s my favorite off of Singular Act 1, @eleanorschidis thank you for convincing me to listen through the album.

Love The Lie by Call Me Loop: I don’t feel like I can communicate why I’m so obsessed with this song, but I’ll try. It’s catchy as fuck, the twinkling guitar riff, the beat and melody... it’s all just so perfect. You know what? I can’t do it justice. Just listen to it.

Drink About by Seeb ft. Dagny: This might be my favorite pop song of the year, and I both do and don’t know why. On one hand, the lyrics are repetitive, it’s simplistic, and it’s just another club dance song. But on the other hand, there’s something about it that elevates it beyond that. First off, there’s Dagny, who I’ve said before I LOVE, and her performance brings so much emotion and pain and personality to the song. Then there’s Seeb’s production, managing to make an unforgettable drop and chorus out of only a handful of lines. There was a period of time where I would just listen to this song on repeat, and it never got old or tired despite its repetition. It’s like a rush of euphoria whenever I hear it, and I can’t recommend it enough.

R&B/HIP HOP

Honey Dew by LION BABE: Like Say Lou Lou, I first learned about LION BABE by reading about them in Teen Vogue. I put off checking them out for a while, and when I finally did, I wasn’t disappointed. This songs is one of the chillest I’ve heard this year. Jillian Hervey’s smooth voice and the twinkling pianos and shuffling percussion of Lucas Goodman’s production just meld so perfectly together.

After the Storm by Kali Uchis ft. Tyler, The Creator and Bootsy Collins: There’s something about Kali Uchis’s voice that is so unique and so sultry, I can’t help but get sucked into her music. This song mixes together her lovely crooning, a rap verse from Tyler, The Creator, bubbly production, and uplifting lyrics, and I can’t help but feel happy whenever I hear it. This song feels like emerging from a cold lake, it’s that refreshing. (Also, count In My Dreams as an honorable mention, that song is great too.)

The Kids Are Alright by Chloe x Halle: The song is awe-inspiring, from the powerful harmonies of the opening to the rhythmic switch-ups present all throughout the song. I love the “we are we are we are” mantra that repeats all throughout the song. It almost sounds like a poem put to music.

Blue Lights by Jorja Smith: Mixing a spoken word style hip hop and reggae elements into her usual graceful sound, Jorja Smith manages to craft a pretty sounding R&B song with a meaningful message behind it. Her debut album Lost & Found isn’t what I usually listen to, but I enjoyed it quite a bit. Also, can Jorja Smith drop her skincare routine? How does she get it so dewy and smooth? She’s so hecking pretty, I can’t even.

Honey by Raveena: YouTube played this song as a commercial before a video I was watching, and I fell in love with it. Raveena’s voice is so delicate, fragile even, and just lovely paired with the simple but glistening production.

Summer Pack by Childish Gambino: Okay, I’m putting both songs on here. My only explanation for this EP is that Donald Glover took the entire season of Summer and managed to distill it into two R&B songs. Summertime Magic has a watery, tropical mood that’s always refreshing to hear (am I the only one that is reminded of Wii Sports Resort?) and Feels Like Summer makes me feel like I’m sitting on my front steps in the middle of August with a melting orange popsicle.

ALTERNATIVE/INDIE/ROCK

Baby by Bishop Briggs: While more pop leaning than her usual content, the blatant sexuality, personal lyrics, and Bishop Briggs’s usual powerful vocals sell this song. Also, the music video is AMAZING. I’ve put it on my animated music videos that give me life series, but I can’t reiterate enough how great the animation is. Holy hell.

Gold Rush by Death Cab for Cutie: This song is downright ethereal. It sounds like it’s lulling you to sleep, but in the best kind of way. It isn’t boring, it’s soothing. Hearing this song on the radio is what got me into this band, and while I haven’t heard their entire discography, I know that this song will remain one of my favorites.

Hand It Over by MGMT: Just like Gold Rush, this song is so soothing it’s practically therapeutic. Every time I hear it, I just melt right into my chair. I’d say I’m a casual fan of MGMT, (I haven’t heard their less mainstream albums,) but I really like Oracular Spectacular and Little Dark Age. This is one of my favorite cuts off the latter album.

Idaho by Gorillaz: While The Now Now didn’t leave a big impression on me, this song makes me glad that I decided to listen to it. The production has this swell to it at the chorus, which is just so calming. I really like how the song is dappled with nature sounds, too. It makes me feel like I’m in a cabin next to a lake in the middle of the woods and it’s raining outside but I’m cuddled up in a cozy blanket with a cup of peppermint tea.

Baby You’re A Haunted House by Gerard Way: I’ve never listened to My Chemical Romance, so I didn’t know what to expect from this song, but holy crap. It’s a total banger. The guitars on this track are so fuzzy and aggressive in all the right ways. This was what I had on repeat all throughout Halloween.

Blood and Bones by TRACE: The only word I can use to describe the song is entrancing. TRACE’s smooth vocals and the laid back production always make me feel so relaxed, and the funkier electronic touches and glittery piano riffs add just enough to keep it all interesting.

Nobody by Mitski: I told y’all I be mentioning Mitski on one of these lists! While the entirety of Be The Cowboy was lovely, Nobody stands out as one of the catchiest, strangest, and most depressing songs of the year. How can a song about crushing, isolating loneliness that literally has a lyric about the hypothetical aliens living on Venus bop to the gods? I have no clue, but Mistki pulled it off.

Fruity by Rubblebucket: Speaking of weird lyrics, this one takes the cake: “I said I’d make it to the party / But I’ve got a lot going on / The lioness gave a feast for forty off her body / Then slept on the ground till a flower grew out.” I have no clue what the hell that's supposed to mean, but it works. The little “lalala”s and the whispered vocals make for an interesting listen. Thanks, Spotify’s Discover Weekly!

Pristine by Snail Mail: The brain child of nineteen year old Lindsey Jordan, Snail Mail is one of the most intriguing indie rock acts I’ve heard this year. Her debut album, Lush, is full of awesome songs, but Pristine has got to be my favorite. The lyrics about the monotony of party culture, accompanied by an upbeat guitar riff and communicated through her raw vocals, all come together to form a song that you can both headbang and relax to.

She’s Kerosene by The Interrupters: I don’t listen to ska punk, but this song is a just a ton of fun. There’s a sweet saxophone solo, and holy crap does Aimee Allen have a ton of personality on the vocals. Even my dad liked this song.

Body Talks by The Struts ft. Kesha: AND I MEAN THE KESHA VERSION. The original is fine, but when you’ve got a version of a song with Kesha on it, do you really need to hear the other one? This song has such an explosive and rocking chorus and Luke Spiller of The Struts and Kesha have great chemistry. I hope Kesha ventures more into the rock genre in the future, because she, well, rocks at it.

Midnight by Black Honey: A grimy banger complete with bold vocals, a chorus that will get. stuck. in your. head, assertive guitars, and a kick ass synthesizer solo? Yes, please. I loved Midnight from the first time I heard it. I might have mentioned before that I heard of this song through YouTube recommendations, and I’m so happy to have come across this song and this band.

Lavender Bones by Stand Atlantic: As I mentioned in my artist recommendation post, this song is the update to Misery Business by Paramore that I never knew I needed. It’s noisy, it’s angry, it’s so goddamn catchy. I’m not always into the whole punk sound, but this song surpasses its genre. It’s just so good.

Shame by Elle King: Since hearing Ex’s and Oh’s back in 2015, I’ve been obsessed with Elle King’s debut, Love Stuff. It’s one of those albums that I can put on and listen to all the way through. Her follow up, Shake The Spirit, was also pretty good, showcasing her gritty, powerful voice intertwined with rock, blues, and country elements. This song is the standout, explosive, boot stomping, and a whole lot of fun.

Uh Huh by Jade Bird: This song is the epitome of a headbanger. It was a tossup between this song and her other singles, Love Has All Been Done Before and Lottery, for this list, but this one just had to be on it. This is one of my most listened to rock songs of the year. The energetic guitar gives the song an electric pulse, and Jade Bird’s vocals... holy shit does she have pipes. Her voice reminds me of Alanis Morissette. This song sprints at full speed, as over as quickly as it started, and a hell of a rush too.

Fireworks by First Aid Kit: I’m not a big fan of country/folk music, but this Swedish sister duo have surpassed my usual genre bias time and time again. This song is my favorite off of their album Ruins, (they dropped the EP Tender Offerings this year, too. It’s a lovely little slice of folk that I’d definitely recommend y’all check out.) This is a grand, soaring ballad, showcasing the sisters’ harmonization and a showstopping string instrument. Just gorgeous.

Reasons Not To Die (Demo) by Ryn Weaver: Ryn Weaver was one of the first artists I listened to when I was first defining my taste in music. Her album The Fool is what got me into the indie pop and alternative genres. While hopeful that she’d drop more music, I was also pretty sure that it wasn’t going to happen for a long, long while because she doesn’t currently have a label. Then this song came along. Everything about it is beautiful: Ryn’s vibrato-rich voice, the melody, the lyrics, guys. This song’s lyrics are so personal and authentic. As the song continues, it builds up to this crescendo, and Ryn’s voice gets more powerful and yet more vulnerable at the same time, the music swells... and then it drops back down again. This song makes me teary whenever I hear it, and that doesn’t happen that often. Please, Ryn. Drop more music. Lorde knows we need voices like yours in the current music scene.

David Hockney Creates Digital Sunrise For London’s Iconic Piccadilly Lights And Screens Around The World

LONDON – NEW YORK – LOS ANGELES – SEOUL – TOKYO

A new video work by David Hockney, one of the world’s most celebrated living artists, will be unveiled on London’s Piccadilly Lights screen on 1 May at 20:21 BST.

The screening is part of a global collaboration, curated by Josef O’Connor, Founder and Artistic Director of CIRCA, an innovative new platform showcasing digital art in the public space. It is presented in partnership with Times Square Arts’ Midnight Moment program in New York, synchronised over 70 electronic billboards, COEX K-POP Square, the largest LED screen in South Korea, and Yunika Vision in Japan.

David Hockney, said: “What does the world look like? We have to take time to see its beauty. That’s what I hope my work will encourage people to do when they see it on the large screens.”

The new video, titled Remember you cannot look at the sun or death for very long, will be shown every evening throughout the month of May at the following times and locations:

London: Piccadilly Lights, at 20:21BST

New York: Times Square, at 23:57EST

Los Angeles: Pendry West Hollywood, at 20:21PST

Seoul: Coex K-POP Square, at 20:21KST

Tokyo: Yunika Vision, Shinjuku, at 09:00JST

Online via the CIRCA.ART website every evening, at 20:21BST

In this worldwide display of unity, Hockney’s animated sunrise offers a powerful symbol of hope and collaboration as many parts of the world awaken from lockdown. In place of advertisements, members of the public living across these four cities are given the opportunity for a spontaneous encounter with Hockney’s meditation on the arrival of spring.

Created on the artist’s iPad in Normandy, France, this global happening coincides with the release of Hockney’s new book Spring Cannot Be Cancelled and his Royal Academy exhibition The Arrival of Spring, Normandy, 2020 opening 23rd May to 26th September 2021.

A Time-Limited Poster by David Hockney is available to buy for £100 (exc. VAT) on the CIRCA website until 31 May 2021. Social Activation

CIRCA is inviting people to support the community by waking up early and uploading either a video or photo onto social media (#HOCKNEYCIRCA) of a real sunrise in their local neighbourhood. Participants are encouraged to make a donation in support of international and local organisations working to provide COVID relief and urgent supplies. A selection of submissions chosen by David Hockney will receive a free poster.

Jungkook shifted in his seat with a toothy grin. “I wouldn’t go so far as to call myself a ‘producer’...” the singer-songwriter trailed off bashfully.

“But that’s what this album was: self-produced. Your first, in fact.” Yoongi countered.

He was glad to see his friend was still the same guy in all the ways that mattered.

“There is this one particular track that I have a vague concept and melody for but-” Jungkook’s response was cut off by one of the producers calling the 30 second standby.

Yoongi, still relaxed as ever, pressed for him to continue, “But-?”

“Oh, uhm, but the lyrics are still eluding me.” Jungkook finally murmured, fidgeting with his bracelet absentmindedly.

Jungkook simply chuckled at Yoongi’s subtle ‘producer’ jab, ducking his head in embarrassment, before quietly agreeing.

“We have Minnie on the line. Hi, Minnie, you’re on the air with DJ Suga and Jeon Jungkook.” Yoongi said.

“Oh my gosh! Hi DJ Suga! Hi Jungkook!” a cheerful voice filtered in through the headsets, “I’m in love wiht “My Time”. The lyrics seem so sad even if the song sounds so upbeat. What inspired you to write a song like this?”

Jungkook replied, “Thank you so much for liking the song. It’s a very personal piece to me and it means a lot to hear that fans are reacting so positively to the track.” He took a deep breath before continuing, “When I had set out to create this song, I had wanted to be as honest and authentic as possible with the lyrics while still staying true to my original vision for the song which was basically a bittersweet look at the last few years of my life and what it means to me as a young musician. I believe instead of seeing the lyrics as something sad, I see it as it simply living life. Life has ups and downs, there are sacrifices but even greater rewards. A give and take, if you will.”

“Poignant.” Yoongi responded, “Thank you for calling in Minnie. Next caller we have is Ken. Ken you’re on the air with DJ Suga and Jungkook.”

“Hi guys. I just wanted to say that I really love both of your albums. “Euphoria” is on repeat daily for me.” a warm, tenor voice insisted on the other end. “When will we be able to hear you live in concert again?”

Yoongi efficiently thanked Ken for calling in and pulled up the next call in the queue, “Hi Y/N, you’re on the air with DJ Suga and Jungkook.”

There was silence on the other end.

Unfazed, Yoongi tried again, “Y/N? You’re on the air.”

The unnerving silence permeated the air and just as Yoongi was going to move on to the next caller, a soft voice pierced through the quiet, “Hello? Is this Jungkook?”

Jungkook scooted forward into his chair. “Yes, hello.”

Both host and guest were taken aback by the peculiar response but Jungkook recovered quickly and said, “Why do you say that? It isn't that late. Are you getting tired already?”

The voice returned this time with a quiet strength that masked the slight quiver of desperation, “Would it be too much if I could hear you sing for me… one last time?”

Yoongi didn’t even blink. “Go for it, Jungkookie.”

“I understand.”

Upon hearing a reply from the other end of the line, Jungkook closed his eyes in relief. He didn’t realize he had waited for that response with bated breath.

“I will.”

Jungkook closed his eyes. Giving himself over to the music, his calloused fingers found its rythum and began to strum a simple cord before taking a deep breath and allowing the song to take shape...

As the song wound down, the studio erupted into cheers, from the staff and Yoongi alike. Jungkook bowed politely before he spoke into the microphone, “So, Y/N, what did you think?”

There was no reply from the other end of the line. Yoongi looked towards the booth where the producers sat behind the glass window and took their nods as a sign that the line was still open.

“Y/N?” Jungkook repeated. “Don’t leave me hanging now. We had a deal. Are you still there?”

There was a beat of agonizing silence before a sniffle could be heard from the other end of the line. “Yes, Jungkook... I’m still here.”
