The Worship of Red Son
Fans of Lego Monkie Kid, did you know that Red Son (Hong hai'er, 紅孩兒), this guy ...
Tumblr media
... is worshiped in Chinese folk religion? Journey to the West (Xiyouji, 西遊記, 1592) states that Guanyin (觀音) gives "Red Boy" the religious title "Child of Goodly Wealth" (Shancai tongzi, 善財童子) upon his initial capture and fake submission to Buddhism:
"Since you have received my commandments," said the Bodhisattva, "I won't treat you lightly. I'll call you the Child of Goodly Wealth. How's that?" The fiend nodded his head in agreement, for all he hoped for was that his life be spared. [1]
菩薩道:「你今既受我戒,我卻也不慢你,稱你做善財童子,如何?」 那妖點頭受持,只望饒命。
This is the Chinese name of an established Buddhist deity called "Sudhana". He is best known as a young cultivator from the Gaṇḍavyūha Sutra (c. 200 to 300 CE) who studies under 53 respective gods, goddesses, bodhisattvas, holy monks, and lay practitioners to achieve enlightenment. [2] He is commonly depicted as one of Guanyin's two disciples, the other being the Dragon Girl (Longnu, 龍女). For instance, here is a Malaysian religious statue of the trio in my personal collection:
Tumblr media
Here is a detail of the Child of Goodly Wealth (his right leg is not broken, just bent at the knee). Take note of the Monkey King-like curlicue band around his neck and the golden rings around his wrists and ankle(s).
Tumblr media
The bands/rings are very similar to those worn by Nezha in Monkie Kid (more on this below):
Tumblr media
Here is a stand alone statue of the Child in my collection. The curlicue-style neck band is not included:
Tumblr media
While the rings are likely connected to the kinds of adornments historically worn by South Asian religious practitioners, Journey to the West states that Red Boy/the Child's ornaments serve the same function as Monkey's golden headband. They are used to further submit the stubborn demon:
Dear Bodhisattva! She took the fillet and waved it at the wind once, crying, "Change!" It changed into five fillets, which she threw at the body of [Red Boy/the Child], crying, "Hit!" One fillet enveloped the boy's head, while the rest caught his two hands and two feet. "Stand aside, Wukong," said the Bodhisattva, "and let me recite for a while the Golden-Fillet Spell" (Wu & Yu, 2012, p. 251).
I should note that this is not a case of later believers copying details from the novel. It's actually the reverse; Journey to the West simply gives a fanciful origin for the rings that have been associated with the deity for centuries. For instance, here is a Japanese statue from the 13th-century.
Tumblr media
This is where it gets interesting. Some modern practitioners worship the Child of Goodly Wealth in his Red Boy form, as evidenced by these circa 1970s drawings from a Singaporean idol maker's shop (photos by Keith Stevens/courtesy of Ronni Pinsler of the BOXS project). Notice how they are strikingly similar to Nezha:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
They are so similar, in fact, that modern statues of Nezha and Red Boy are easy to confuse. Here is a prime example. The figure on the left is Nezha in his "Lotus Prince" (Hualian taizi, 蓮花太子) form. [3] The leaves on his shoulders look just like those from the first Red Boy drawing above. The one in the middle is his "Wrapped Stomach" (Du wei, 肚圍) form, which shows Nezha wearing a baby's stomach apron. And the last is Red Boy. He wears the same apron and even stands on a fire wheel just like Nezha (refer back to the second Red Boy drawing).
Tumblr media
Update #1
This website notes how someone added a spear to their Child of Goodly Wealth to make Red Boy.
Tumblr media
Update #2
An informant states that more recent practitioners consider the Child of Goodly Wealth and Red Boy two different deities:
[H]ave to wonder just why wu cheng en decided to hybridise existing buddhist figure sudhana with red boy, these days many devotees subscribe to pov that shan cai and red boy are two seperate individuals with shan cai statues unarmed and red boy statues wielding weapons
They also directed me to this (likely custom) statue of Red Boy. I love the flames shooting from his mouth:

Note:
Original source changed slightly.
His spiritual journey is summarized in Fontein, 1967, pp. 5-14.
After sacrificing his life, Nezha's physical body is replaced with a divine one constructed from a lotus. See Creation of the Gods (c. 1620).

Most Beloved WWE Wrestler Tournament: Round 2 Statistics Dump
Followers: 251
Total Votes: 22,087 + 13,398 = 35,485
Times I realized I was not in-depth enough with my checking of wrestlers and forgot at least one which I only found out because I heard an old wrestler was being accused of murder and the name didn't sound familiar so I checked and it turns out he isn't included but have to remind myself that if no one mentioned him being missing from round 1, he probably isn't the most beloved anyway: once, thank god
Beloved By Gender:
We started with a split of 81.7% men to 18.3% women, which moved to 75% men to 25% women after the first round. After the second round of voting, our percentages are:

Voting Trends:
During round 2, the voting totals ranged from a low of 360 votes per day to 554, with the average rising from 387 votes per day to 462 votes per day (Also I figured out how to add a date marking line how cool is that??)

A Brief Examination of Margaret Houlihan and Gender
(aka I'm doing my rough draft of my essay on tumblr bc I can ramble here)
Tumblr media
I spent 6 weeks watching all 251 episodes of M*A*S*H with the aim of critically analyzing Margaret Houlihan, and more specifically how she is referred to throughout the series. I was initially doing this with the idea of tracking the change from "Hot Lips" to Margaret, but I got more than I bargained for - I really forgot how often she's referred to as a man or in a gender neutral way, and it's super interesting, so under the cut is a list of quotes and some light analysis.
Season 1
"Oh, sorry baby." / "Major to you!" ("The Pilot" s1e1) Neutral
"You're dismissed!" / "Thanks, Mother." ("The Pilot" s1e1) Feminine
"One lady in our outfit..." ("Dear Dad" s1e12) Feminine
Season 2
"You are no gentleman!" / "Good thing you are." ("Divided We Stand" s2e1) Masculine
[Margaret speaking on behalf of Frank] "That's pretty strong stuff, Frank." / "It's true!" ("L.I.P. (Local Indigenous Personnel)" s2e7) Masculine
"You've emasculated me for the last time!" ("Carry On Hawkeye" s2 e11) Masculine
"Margaret Houlihan; nurse, friend, and all around good egg." ("Carry On Hawkeye" s2e11) Neutral
[Radar calls Margaret "sir" - this is something that he ends up doing for several more seasons] "Men are sirs, women are ma'ams!" ("Hot Lips and Empty Arms" s2e14) Feminine (with Masculine connotations long-term)
Season 3
"You know, for once I agree with him?" / "I [Margaret] said that." / "I know." ("Rainbow Bridge" s3e2) Masculine
"Speaking man-to-man, Colonel," ("There is Nothing Like a Nurse" s3e10) Masculine
"He's a creep." / "She's a creepette." ("The Consultant" s3e17) Feminine
"I know you didn't volunteer because you're a married man [...] Well, I'm a married man, too, Frank. Married to the Army." ("Aid Station" s3e19) Masculine
"I'm not just Major Margaret Houlihan, army nurse. I'm also Margaret Houlihan - frail, vulnerable, sensitive female." ("Aid Station" s3e19) Feminine
"Don't think of me as a woman!" ("Aid Station" s3e19) Neutral/Masculine
Season 4
"When I was five, I had a crying fit because they wouldn't let me have a crew cut." ("Deluge" 4.23) Neutral/Masculine
Season 5
"He [Donald] calls me his little plebe." ("Margaret's Engagement" s5e2) Neutral
"I'm an engaged person!" ("Margaret's Engagement" s5e2) Neutral
[Speaking to a newborn baby] "Major Houlihan is here to help you." ("The Abduction of Margaret Houlihan" s5e6) Neutral
"Anybody can open with a pair of 10s if they're wearing civilian boxer shorts." / [...] / "I'll open for 25 cents." ("Dear Sigmund" s5e7) Neutral/Masculine
"Margaret, when you're sick, can't you call me Frank?" / "You know I'm an engaged person." ("The Colonel's Horse" s5e11) Neutral
"Margaret, I'm as taut as a watch spring." / "Your state of tautness s no longer a concern of mine, Major Burns. I happen to be an engaged person." ("Hawkeye's Nightmare" s5e13) Neutral
"Sure, nurse..." / "Nurse?! You're talking to a major!" / "Sorry. Would you help us move this guy into pre-op, Major?" ("Post-Op" s5e23) Feminine/Neutral
Season 6
"A head nurse who is part seductress, and part Attila the Hun" ("The Winchester Tapes" s6e4) Feminine/Masculine
[the nurses to Hawkeye] "Do you think you could talk to Hot Lips?" ("Images" s6e9) Feminine
"Hot Lips Houlihan: blonde landmine." ("Patent 4077" s6e16) Feminine
"Congratulations. You're still a major, Major." ("What's Up, Doc?" s6e19) Neutral
Season 7
[about her divorce] "Best thing that ever happened to me. The weight of the world is off my shoulders! I feel like a new woman!" ("Peace On Us" s7e2) Feminine
[BJ] "The king is dead." / [Hawk] "Long live the queen." / [Margaret] "You bet." ("Hot Lips is Back in Town" s7e20) Feminine
"I'm going as far in this man's army as any woman can go. Maybe even general!" ("Hot Lips is Back in Town" s7e20) Feminine
Season 8
"I'm a woman, and I can tell you what it's like for a woman to be away from the man she loves." ("Too Many Cooks" s8e1) Feminine
"To be a woman, with the rank of major..." ("Are You Now, Margaret?" s8e2) Feminine
"Hot Lips?" / "Yeah, that's a nickname she picked up." ("Are You Now, Margaret?" s8e2) Feminine
"Hot Streak Houlihan strikes again!" ("Life Time" s8e11) Neutral
"I'm just as much a major as any other major. You'll notice these leaves come in gold, not pink for girls and blue for boys." ("Stars and Stripes" s8e14) Feminine/Neutral
"What do you suppose I am deep down?" / "Deep, deep down? A woman." / "Go a little deeper." / "A major." / "I'm me. Sometimes a nurse, sometimes a major, sometimes a woman in love... sometimes all three at once." ("Stars and Stripes" s8e14) Feminine/Neutral
[speaking to an infant] "Hello there, sweetheart. I'm your Auntie Margaret." ("Yessir, That's Our Baby" s8e15) Feminine
Season 9
"What's the matter? She isn't man enough to bring it in [to the men's showers] herself?" ("Bless You, Hawkeye" s9e17) Masculine
[speaking to Margaret] "You know, you don't get to be a high-ranking officer, to run an O.R., to command respect, unless you've earned it." ("The Foresight Saga" s9e19) Neutral
Season 10
"I know everybody thinks I'm tough, demanding, insensitive, cold, callous, crabby - feel free to disagree at any time!" / "Think of it this way; maybe you are all that stuff, but deep down underneath, I think maybe there's some more stuff that's... pretty good stuff. You know?" ("The Birthday Girls" s10e11) Neutral
Season 11
"I do not need the help of a nurse." / "It's a good thing I'm a lady or you'd need a nurse, buster!" ("Goodbye, Farewell, and Amen" s11e16) Feminine
Total Counts:
Feminine: 19
Masculine: 12
Neutral: 17
These aren't all of the quotes I collected during my rewatch, or the only thing I was paying attention to, but it definitely caught my interest. And laying out like like this, by season, you can really see the trends ebb and flow. Margaret is portrayed pretty firmly as feminine/neutral through the first season, but season two introduces the running joke of other characters referring to her as "Frank" and using he/him due to how often she speaks on his behalf, as well as Radar calling her "sir" rather than "ma'am." She sticks even more firmly to referring to herself neutrally in season five, calling herself an "engaged person" rather than an "engaged woman" on three different occasions.
After her marriage and Frank's departure, Margaret is referred to more femininely again, but she doesn't refer to herself as a woman until season 7, after her divorce. I find it especially interesting to compare "The Abduction of Margaret Houlihan" in s5 and "Yessir, That's Our Baby" in s8; both deal with very young infants and show us Margaret's interactions with these babies. In s5, she refers to herself as "Major Houlihan" to the baby, but then in s8, she's "Auntie Margaret." Between these events were her marriage and divorce, and Margaret's self-confidence being boosted by her work on herself and her duties as head nurse.
BJ refers to Margaret loosely in masculine terms in s9, and it's the first time the joke has been really touched on since s6, when Charles compares her to Attila the Hun. This is the last time anyone refers to Margaret as masculine, with the final two seasons having her presented either neutrally (by rank) or femininely (as a "lady").
Margaret's character journey actually can be tracked through this list of quotes pretty well. She's more of an antagonist when she's referred to more often with masculine terms, and as she develops into a more traditional protagonist, the narrative refers to her with more feminine terms. The fact that Margaret herself is most likely to use feminine terms when she's at her most confident in herself is definitely interesting, and I think says a lot about how her confidence is tied into her self-image.

Why does Endeavor keep freezing when it comes to saving his family?
Hum...
... we've 2, maybe 3, stretching 4 cases in which this canonically happens.
Enji gives his explanations for each of them.
1) Chap 251, he froze and failed to save Natsuo.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Enji's explanation is:
‘Warukatta…! Isshun kangaete shimatta ore ga tasuketara konosaki omae wa ore ni nani mo ienaku natte shimau node wanai ka to’ 「悪かった…! 一瞬考えてしまった俺が助けたらこの先おまえは俺に何も言えなくなってしまうのではないかと」 “It was my bad…! I thought for a moment that if I helped you, you might not be able to say anything to me from now on.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The implication seems to be he wants Natsuo to continue telling straight to his face how much he messed up but that, if he had saved Natsuo, Natsuo would have felt obliged to keep his feelings for himself.
2) Chap 293. Tōya is trying to cremate Shōto (and himself).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There are two implication here, the first is what Tōya says, Enji is broken, discovering the truth was traumatic to him.
Even though he said originally he couldn't believe his son died, at the same time Enji can't believe his son is Dabi.
It's not just that he has grown to accept the idea Tōya died, the real problem is who Tōya became (and how it was due to him). I've discussed about it in another post but having a family member who's a murderer it's the end for a Japanese family.
Remember how Gran Torino was angry because Shigaraki was 'trampling all over Shimura's memory'?
That's why, even if Shimura Nana is dead, it's still socially terrible she has a relative who's a murderer.
But there's also a second implication done later on in chap 300.
'Ore wa ikinobi temo... ENDEAVOR wa shinda. Tairyō satsujin-sha (read: musuko) to tatakaenai.' 「俺は生き延びても... エンデヴァーは死んだ。大量殺人者(むすこ)と戦えない」 "Even if I survive...Endeavor is dead. I can't fight against a mass murderer (read: my son)"
Tumblr media
What's the problem here?
Enji was raised into the idea that Heroes fight Villains, there's no something like 'saving Villains'. Heroes normally shouldn't kill Villains but considering how Hawks went for the kill with Twice and how Enji tried his hardest to murder Shigaraki and he probably wasn't the only one.
When they find Shigaraki, Mirko attacks the tube saying Shigaraki can't be released into the world, then urges the others to finish Shigaraki and Garaki off, claiming they can't let Shigaraki wake up.
When X-less discovers Shigaraki isn't breathing and his heart isn't beating and Garaki explains the capsule would have revived him, they don't try to revive him themselves giving him CPR.
Present Mic tells X-less to take Shigaraki away, but they are clearly in no hurry to give him medical care, X-less even waste time thinking he has to destroy the machines around them.
In order to save Shōto Enji should fight (and likely kill) Tōya... and he can't. He doesn't want to hurt his son, he doesn't want to attack him with his fire aware that Tōya isn't even fire resistant. He can't think any other way to deal with Tōya and he just can't bring himself to attack it, we'll see it even when Tōya is threatening to nuke Japan.
But he can't think of anything else he could do that could stop the situation, like, for example, trying to talk to Touya. After all, he never did it and he has no idea how to deal with his son turned Villain.
Villains were just something Heroes would beat.
Hence he froze.
We've two more possible cases, though in them he didn't exactly froze... or, if he did, we don't know about it.
3) Tōya 'died' because Enji avoided going to see him, and therefore got on Sekoto Peak too late to save him.
Tumblr media
Enji's explanation is:
'...Maki wo kubete shimau dake da to... Iya... Nanto koe wo kaketara ī no ka wakaranakattanda 「...薪をくべてしまうだけだと... いや... 何と声を掛けたらいいのかわからなかったんだ」 "...I thought I would just end up burning more firewood (inside him)... no... I didn't know what to say."
The whole 'burning more firewood' implies that he believed he would just encourage the fire inside Tōya of which Tōya kept talking about through the two chapters, in short that he would encourage him to continue... but then he admits the more relevant reason, he has no idea what to say.
Enji (and Rei) never knew what to tell to Tōya beyond stop, they didn't want to tackle their responsibilities in Tōya's situation nor wanted to offer real support, they just wanted him to accept what they told him and stop. Hence Enji doesn't face his son but avoids him, telling himself this is for the better.
4) While the story doesn't really tell us if Enji froze, the implication of the scene seems to be he didn't act when his father fought a Villain, but remained there frozen on the scene.
Tumblr media
It's something I've discussed in the past here and it's not super well explained by Horikoshi but it can be the root that explains all the other times Enji remains frozen.
Enji is not a natural born Hero because, differently from Midoriya, he doesn't have inside himself the instinct to save people even when the situation could be fatal to him.
He does it out of duty, raging against himself to give himself courage but, when push comes to shove and a situation becomes emotionally very difficult for him, he doesn't want to face it and freeze.
It's not so much the fear of death, he doesn't hesitate at all when facing Shigaraki even though the latter could murder him, but the fear of being emotionally hurt.
Even All for One will try to exploit it by attacking him on an emotional level.
When his family and his emotions toward his family are on the table he doesn't know how to handle them and his option is to avoid things, which is something he'll admit through the story.
Enji is an evolving character so ultimately he'll face things but I think it's a good guess to assume that the times he froze were due to this.
Of course though, since there's not a canon explanation, this is just my guess and I might be wrong. Still thank you for your ask!

“There are plenty of good reasons for fighting," I said, "but no good reason ever to hate without reservation, to imagine that God Almighty Himself hates with you, too. Where's evil? It's that large part of every man that wants to hate without limit, that wants to hate with God on its side. It's that part of every man that finds all kinds of ugliness so attractive." "It's that part of an imbecile," I said, "that punishes and vilifies and makes war.” ― Kurt Vonnegut, Mother Night p 251 (1962)

DL 190 - ALCO PA-1 at Kansas City, KS por Zach Pumphery Por Flickr: On its way to new owner Genesee Valley Transportation Company is the famous ALCO PA-1 restored by preservationist Doyle McCormack over the past 2 decades in Portland, Oregon. The locomotive began moving east in late April from the PNW on BNSF Railway, arriving at Kansas City early this morning on BNSF Train H PASKCK9 25A, appropriately behind a warbonnet painted Dash-9. In this view, the locomotive is at the "Tall Tower" at BNSF Argentine Yard. The unit is on home rails at this former Santa Fe facility. This engine was built for the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway by the American Locomotive Company in 12-1948 as ATSF 62-L, builder number 76541 wearing the famous red and silver Warbonnet paint scheme leading famous trains such as the "El Capitan" between Chicago and California. On 4-5-67, the Santa Fe retired the unit and sold it to Morrison–Knudsen in Boise, ID. 4 Ex-ATSF units including this one were rebuilt by MK with the "PA-4" classification, for the Delaware and Hudson on 8-11-75, with this one becoming D&H 18. Under D&H ownership, they were used by Amtrak for the "Adirondack", and later by the Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority hauling commuter trains around Boston. The last PA's to operate in the United States, they were sold in 1978 to the NdeM, where this one ran as DH-18 until 1981. All 4 of those PA's remain, 2 at the National Museum of Mexican Railways, and 2 in the US. In 2000, McCormack of American Freedom Train and SP 4449 fame worked with the Smithsonian Institution to bring two of these engines back to the United States. What was left of the 16 and 18 came home on flat cars to Oregon. Doyle bought a set of trucks in Canada to replace the ones that were missing when it arrived from Mexico, and the hulk of a BC Rail M420B for its 251 prime mover, electrical cabinet, and traction motors. 16 later wound up at the Museum of the American Railroad in Texas where it is steadily being restored to its Santa Fe appearance. McCormack's father worked for the NYC&STL, better known as the Nickel Plate Road, and his first cab ride when he was 12 was aboard the real NKP 190. Doyle later worked for the N&W in Ohio and an operator, eventually becoming a fireman before moving to the Pacific Northwest in the 1970's. He hired out on the SP, worked freight an passenger service for Amtrak, and has retired from the UP, all the while being heavily involved with the 4449 organization. When he restored the PA it was only natural for him to restore it to an NKP appearance, which took the better part of 2 decades to complete. The engine traveled to Spencer, NC in 2014 for the "Streamliners at Spencer" event featuring a plethora of locomotives from that era. Now in his 80's, it was announced in March 2023 that he had sold the engine to GVT after years of talks. The engine will be put into excursion service by GVT and will pull excursions in Northeastern Pennsylvanian, including former D&H track the engine ran in revenue service. Assigned "DL 190" for movement to GVT's Delaware-Lackawanna Railroad in Pennsylvania, it retains its Nickel Plate Road paint scheme. The real 190 was built in March 1948 and carried builder number 75457. For what was regarded as one of the most beautiful locomotive designs ever built, not many of these were preserved, and half of those units suffered what had been a grim fate for decades. It's nice to have a few left to enjoy. Locomotive: DL 190 5-3-23 Kansas City, KS

Alan Alda's "M*A*S*H" Boots and Dog Tags March Off to Auction
The wardrobe items worn by Alda as Hawkeye Pierce during the hit TV series entire run will be sold July 28 at Heritage Auctions to benefit the Alan Alda Center for Communicating Science.
Antique Trader Staff
Jul 11, 2023
When Alan Alda reported to the 4077th Mobile Army Surgical Hospital in the summer of 1972 he received two items from wardrobe that became the only "M*A*S*H" memorabilia he kept from the smash TV series that ended its run in 1983.
"M*A*S*H" won 14 Emmys during its run as one of the most popular TV shows of all time.
Alda, then 36, received a pair of scuffed-up combat boots, inside which someone had written in black marker the name of his character: "HAWKEYE." He was also given a pair of dog tags, stamped with the names of strangers: Hersie Davenport and Morriss D. Levine.
Every day, throughout 251 episodes as Capt. Benjamin Franklin Pierce in the 14-time Emmy-award-winning TV show, Alda slipped on those boots. Every day, he put those dog tags over his head. Now those souvenirs from one of the best series in TV history head to auction July 28 in a one-lot event at Heritage Auctions.
