Mea Culpa || 24 Hour Journal

A guard inadvertently wakes me up by shining a flashlight in my cell to make sure Craig and I are still present.
After a brief pause to make sure the figure above me is truly asleep and not dead or a sack of potatoes serving as a decoy, he moves on.
I fall asleep shortly afterwards.

I force myself to wake up at this time every morning, about 10-15 minutes before the cells unlock. It was hard to get the timing just right since I don’t have an alarm at first, but most days I manage it based on my biological clock alone.
I relieve myself on the loo while Craig is still asleep, trying to be as quiet as possible.
I brush my teeth, splash water on my face, and sit on my bed, waiting for the doors to open.

The cell doors finally unlock, and I make a beeline for the kitchen area of our cell block. Usually I’m the first to get there, but sometimes I’m unlucky.
Today I have the first go at the microwave and heat up some oatmeal with peanut butter and instant coffee to take back to my cell.
I manage to get in and get out without being caught or harassed by anyone. Craig is gone by the time I get back. Likely at the chow hall or showers. I get to have a relaxing meal alone.

I show up for work in the laundry facility. A few of the driers are down for scheduled repairs.
I spend most of the day lubricating roller bearings, adjusting pulleys, and replacing drum rollers and dryer glides.
This is probably the most relaxing part of my day. It always feels good to be working with machines again.
Still, I can’t believe I only get paid 200 Pokedollars for this shit. Guess I’ll splurge and spend a whole day’s pay on some Fresh Water from a vending machine one day.

Wrap up work in time for count. Try to make it back to my cell without bumping into anyone.
Craig is already there in the room by the time I come in. I say a quick greeting to him and reuse the bowl I used for oatmeal earlier for a bowl of cereal and a box of UHT milk.
I rather miss having cold beverages.

“Five minutes til count time, boys. Be on your bunks and be visible! I repeat, be on your bunks and be visible for 12:00 count or you will get a ticket!”
There’s never any telling how long these things will last, so I get comfortable on my bed with a science fiction novel I used to read a lot as a child.
A guard comes by with a Boltund to check to see if we’re where we need to be.

Count is mercifully short today. The doors unlock again, and most guys begin shuffling over to the Chow Hall for lunch. I say goodbye to Craig.
I wait until it’s relatively quiet in the halls before donning my shower shoes and taking my little plastic bucket of shower supplies down to our cell block’s communal showers.
Privacy is important during this vulnerable time. Most guys wash off either in the morning or just before lockup, but I prefer going in midday when most guys are either having lunch or out in the yard working out.

It’s never completely empty though. I try my best to creep to the other end of the showers opposite a loose group of men that probably had the same idea as me.
The showers are always disgusting. The floors are usually covered in a thick layer of grime, shaved body hair, and bodily fluids. The holes in the shower head I initially chose are so clogged in one that I have to go to another slightly closer to the other men.
This one works, at least, but the hot water is used up. Oh well. It really is a lottery most days.
I hate these annoying timed press buttons. I hate everything about these damn showers. Showering used to be the most relaxing part of my day. I miss my flat so badly just for this alone.

I try to get in and out as quickly as possible since I have company. Maybe if I’m in and out before they realize who I am, I can avoid a scene.
No such luck. I’m small but not small enough to not be seen past the half-assed dividers supposed to offer a shred of privacy.
They intercept me in the changing room. Thankfully, I still have my towel on.
The big guy says he’s heard of me. He asks if it’s true that I ████ █ █████ ████ █ █████.
I confirm that it is true. He’ll find out the truth either way, so there’s really no need to lie.

I get back to my cell.
Decide to take a nap since I’m not feeling so well.

Get woken up by a guard with a Growlithe banging on the cell door. Apparently I have a visitor and need to get processed for that. Time to put on my game face.

Getting strip searched in front of the guards is the most humiliating thing ever. Probably even worse than getting undressed in front of other inmates.
The female guard’s Espeon stares at me the entire time, its forked tail twitching slightly, possibly scanning the near future to see if I was a threat. The whole process of undressing, getting searched, getting redressed takes about 15 minutes. I’m led to the Non Contact visit area so that I can talk with whoever this is.

Another journalist trying to get the big scoop on my fall from grace. I’m exhausted by now by how many interviews these people keep subjecting me to, but I understand the appeal.
I smile politely and answer all of her questions, no matter how asinine. When she asks me how a well-to-do businessman is fairing in a maximum security prison, I tell her that I’m doing just fine. Part of me wants to believe it, too.

Visit is officially concluded. I thank the journalist for her time and go back to get searched a second time.
I take off each article of clothing individually and shake them out, then spread every fold and orifice of myself that might be hiding contraband as the guards search my clothes.
The Espeon is still staring at me. Part of me wishes I could have seen into the future for what was in store for me years ago when I begged for the harshest punishment possible.

Time for tea. Also the last time to get something from the Chow Hall before Lockdown in 2 hours.
My hunger gets the best of me, and I make a visit, despite how terrible the food is and how dangerous it is for someone like me. This place and the Yard are the sites of most stabbings and riots.
Today it’s what I assume to be some sort of beef (I think?) stew with tons of soggy, mealy potatoes and white rice. It looks like something already eaten, but that was par for the course.
I take my little tin of food and try to desperately find a seat at a table not already occupied. No such luck, so I sit at the opposite end of the table of two gents with my approximate skintone.
Thankfully, they ignore me. I eat in peace.

Go to the rec center to see if there’s anything worth watching on the telly. Maybe I can even catch a match.
My appearance prompts from jeers from a couple of men playing pool, but they leave me alone pretty quickly when I try to pay them no mind.
No League matches are showing today, so I instead turn it to the news.
Apparently there’s some sort of catastrophic Dynamaxing incident playing out in multiple cities at once. I hope that some madman didn’t get news of my own experiment and try to do something similar…

Lockdown in 15 minutes. Head back to my cell, but Craig is busy on the loo. Walk back out again and respectfully wait as long as I can for him to finish up.

I have to go in at this point. Luckily, Craig is now washing up. He nods at me and climbs back on his bunk for count.
When the cell doors close, there’s no opening them again until 6 the next morning, unless there’s some sort of emergency. So it’s best to get as comfortable as you can.
I begin reading my book again. There’s nothing else to do, really.

Last state sanctioned meal of the day. The small slot in our cell door is opened, and two paper bags are fed through.
It’s a ham and cheese sandwich, a bag of crisps, and a box of milk for each of us.
As per our agreement, I hand Craig my ham sandwich and my bag of crisps over to him as well. It’s hard not to feel hungry in here, but it’s a small price to pay for peace.
He hands over his box of milk, and I instead have my last bowl of cereal for the night. The extra box of milk is tucked away somewhere safe, and the bowl cleaned and ready for the next morning.
Back to my book.
21:00
The lights in our cell unceremoniously turn off. “LIGHTS OUT!” the voice over the intercom booms. “QUIET IN THE CELLS!”
I sigh, sticking a popsicle stick into the pages as a makeshift bookmark, and stretch out to place it back on the desk for tomorrow.
I lay down, staring blankly out of the bars, feeling more empty than I ever have in my life.
I’ve long since stopped wondering if my sacrifice was worth it, if this is the fate I deserved, if there’s any hope I’ll be remembered fondly in the future, or at all, even in the present day.
This is my life now. It’ll be my life until the day I die. As unhappy as I am about the notion, I’ve made my peace with it, and have adjusted accordingly.
I wipe away the hot tears rolling down my face with a soft sniffle, and roll back over to try to rest up and gather my strength to face this hell the next day.
And the day after that and the day after that and the day after that…

Whoops it’s been more than a month since I did one of these WHOOPS
Been really busy working on my short film for college and I didn’t find time to keep doing this. But now it’s finished so back to the Blondie grind! There was a point a while back where I had the thought “I’d like to be watching a Blondie right now,” so I guess it may have gotten to the point where these are somehow a comfort thing for me. But hey we’ll see how long that lasts when I’m actually watching one again.

Shenanigans, not important, but one who’s got its head stuck in the pet door just did two barks that were definitely played backwards. Okay, so: the Bumsteads lit a firecracker by mistake. Shenanigans ensued, and they threw it out the window, exploding the mailman, who was trying to evade being run into. Then, to get his revenge, the mailman bought a second firecracker off Alvin the neighbour and threw it through the door at the Bumsteads.
I think Dagwood accidentally bullied the mailman so hard he became a terrorist.

Hey, Alexander Hamilton Bumstead just told the truth, handing over a firecracker he was hiding to Blondie without her finding it. That was A) a really sweet moment, and B) really satisfying for someone like me who’s crossing their fingers that the fireworks shenanigans weren’t going to continue into the rest of the movie.

Hey have you seen Final Space? It's on Netflix in Canada. I really liked the first season and the second just went up. It's an animated sci fi comedy, and my take from the start has been that it's not a very good comedy, but it's legitimately great sci fi TV. Season 2 episode 4 made me giddy, it was fantastic. It's all about half of the main cast's spaceship getting trapped in a "time shard," where time passes differently. So it jumps ahead 60 years where part of the cast is cut off from the rest. And one character has a hologram of his dead father that says whatever he types into it in his father's voice. Which I friggin adore. It's so cool. The whole episode was just cool writing. I want to try to achieve that with the Blondie script I'm gonna write. There were moments when I was writing my Sonic script that were really satisfying because I'd read it back and be like "hell yeah, that's cool writing." I have no idea how to explain that in sane terms. I don't mean the things that are happening are cool. I don't mean the Terminator, in sunglasses and a leather jacket with a minigun. I mean the imagery and the ideas feel new and striking and interesting and COOL, ya know? I think I feel that way about really solid set-ups and payoffs. It makes movies like the Spider-Man trilogy and The Darjeeling Limited where dialogue is repeated to signal character growth really satisfying. Or The Truman Show. I just rewatched that recently and that has cool writing in the form of a perfect beginning and a perfect ending (the light falling from the sky in front of Truman, sparking his suspicions in one of the clearest inciting incidents I can think of, and Truman finding the door at the edge of the world, the single coolest visual in the movie.)
Some would say I should channel this passion into something other than Blondie fanfiction. And they're probably right. I'm gonna go to bed and rethink my life.

They stepped up their visual gag game a lot in this movie. There was just a scene where the Bumsteads are at a train station, and Dagwood goes off to get the tickets, then comes back and gets on the wrong train, and when it shows us Blondie and Alexander Hamilton Bumstead sat on the train, you can see Dagwood on the opposite train through the window, and vice versa. Really good framing. Then when he realizes what happens and runs after the train as it’s leaving, there’s a shot of various things getting knocked into the air as Dagwood barges through the crowd. First it’s some letters, then a spilling suitcase and some balloons, and then a full set of bagpipes flies through the air, still making the sound as if it’s being played just so you get that it’s bagpipes.

And that’s the end of Blondie Plays Cupid. I rather enjoyed it. I’d have enjoyed it more if the jokes it had weren’t stretched out across an hour and 7 minutes, but what’re you gonna do. I wouldn’t be doing this in the first place if I were watching every episode of a 20 minute Blondie TV series.

Reflect on a meaningful memory. It could be a very small one or one that really impacted your life. Does a little daydreaming help you through this quarantine or does it just make you miss the past?
Here’s two that really impacted my life.
And this makes me miss the past.
July 24th-26th, 2019: Moving day(s.)
July 24th was the official moving day from my home state. I had never moved in my life so I had no idea what we were in for. I had spent the last night there on a trampoline with my best friends. It was a surprise for me. I slept from 4am to 8am. 4 hours. This’ll hit me hard later in the story. So I had to say good bye to them, which was sad. So I got to my old house about 9am and I took my last shower there. Then I went to my room and packed an overnight back because the drive was about 25 hours. We never stopped to sleep surprisingly. But I packed up the last of my things and taped up the last box. The movers arrived and disassembled my furniture. The only things I was taking to the new house were a shelf thingy that held my clothes and my bed (We were planning on getting new furniture when we got there.) But anyways we were transporting our stuff on our own. We just had people load the stuff. My cats were all over the place. We didn’t have a dog at this time. The movers were done around 3. We moved a few more things and went out to eat at 5. We said goodbye to our neighbors (of 15 years) and my other family. We wanted to leave at 6. We took some pictures infront of our house and then left for our journey. I wanted to sleep in the car but I never did. We have 3 cats and for the first hour all 3 of them meowed. 2 of them stopped, and one of them meowed until she lost her voice about the 22 hour mark. The trip was going well at this point. Other than the fact that I didn’t sleep. Yes, I was running on 4 hours of sleep. We were in Flagstaff and the trailer that our moving truck was pulling literally broke. The roads are terrible up there so that’s why. We had an hour left and we were so mad and tired. We pulled over and waited for a while. (Ok so we had our family car pulling a U-Haul trailer, and the big moving truck pulling another trailer we owned.) My dad decided to let me, my mom, and my two brothers go ahead and drive to the house. My dad waited for a towtruck, to load our trailer. Yea weird. But we finally got to the house and we got the key from our realtor and we got in. We couldn’t do anything tho because my dad had the big moving truck so we were left with the cats and what we packed in our bags. The cats flipped out when we let them out. We left and went to chick-fil-a. My dad finally got there but apparently the moving truck missed the exit off of i-17 so yea he didn’t get there til super late. We unloaded our bedding and our mattresses and we all passed out in the living room. I thought I would sleep terribly because all I had was a blanket and my bare mattress but I had been awake for 41 hours so it was fine. I slept all 7 hours. The other movers got there and yea. The only eventful thing that happened this day was the power going out right in the middle of us moving but it was fine. This house has a ton of natural light. I could go on and on but you’re tired of this so here I am today.

December 28th, 2019
This was the day I was going to fly all by myself. So my flight left at 10:55 and the airport is 2 hours away so we left about 6:30. Boy am I glad we left that early. I woke up at 5:30. We looked outside and there was about 4 inches of snow on the ground. Fun. But at 6:30 we got an alert that i-17 was closed. No. This was the only way to get to the airport. Wrong. Anyways we found an alternate route. We were about to pull out of the driveway then we’re like wait I need my passport for photo identification. So my dad ran back inside and got that. So we got to our alternate path and it was a literal mud road. Not dirt, not rocks, mud. We took that for 30 miles and we had a four wheel drive yukon and it ended up being fine. We got to the airport at 10, and hour after we wanted to, and there was another problem. They couldn’t find my flight. Finally they found it. They swapped aircraft. We went through security pretty quick around 10:15 (my dad got a special pass to go with me up until the gate.) We got to gate c-14 5 minutes before it boarded. I was in the the second part of group A. I said good bye to my dad and got on the plane. I found a good window seat. An adult man sat in my row but nobody ended up seating between us. The flight was good except for the part where we flew into a storm but I had a safe landing 2.5 hours later. Ok thanks good bye.

Do you care about celebrities? oh jesus here we go. first off, yes- i care about quite a few celebrities. they can make us feel a happiness like no other. if you’re having a bad day, all you need is to hear their voice and the pain goes away. they speak on things that are important and meaningful. they can be our inspirations and role models. when they have a new interview, song (or movie or something else.. whatever your favorite celebrity does) it always gives us something to look forward to. they make you feel less alone. they make you feel loved. i could keep going on but i have 134 more questions..

1. Do you have a good relationship with your parents? No but that's on me.
2. Who did you last say "I love you" to? My partner of nearly three years, when he got out of bed this morning.
3. Do you regret anything? I regret not meeting my teen-internet-soul-mate when I had the chance. I could really have done with the closure.

The Dodgers returned to the World Series for the first time since 1988, a drought exceeded by five other teams — the Pirates (1979), Brewers (1982), Orioles (1983) and the Nationals and Mariners, who have never been there.
But during what is now commonly referred to as the Golden Era of Baseball — 1947-57 — when New York was the capital of the baseball universe, hosting at least one side of the World Series in all of those years except 1948, the Dodgers were participants in six of them, always against the Yankees. And right in the middle of most of them was Carl Erskine, the humble Hoosier, who turned in two of the greatest postseason pitching performances in history.
He is 90 now, still in the peak of health, managing to get in a round of golf or so a week as long as the weather in his home town of Anderson, Ind., allows. And, yes, he still follows baseball, especially the Dodgers, although in recent years, he confesses, he’s not quite sure what game it is he’s watching. This was particularly true in Game 4 of the Yankees-Astros American League Championship Series as Erskine, in front of his television, watched incredulously when Yankee starter Sonny Gray, pitching a one-hit shutout, was removed in the sixth inning after a walk and a catcher’s interference, and his opponent, Lance McCullers Jr., having thrown just 81 pitches and leading, 4-1, was pulled after yielding a lead-off home run to Aaron Judge in the seventh.
“Just like Game 5 in 1952?” I teased him.
“Right,” said Erskine. “It is a little different today, isn’t it?”
In all, Erskine pitched in 11 World Series games from 1949-56, all against the Yankees, making two starts in 1952, three in 1953 and one each in 1955 and ’56. The Game 5 of the ’52 Series to which I was referring was one of the more phenomenal — and unlikely — pitching efforts by any starting pitcher ever in a World Series. The Dodgers were leading, 4-0, when suddenly the Yankees, held to just one hit to that point, erupted for five runs off Erskine in the bottom of the fifth. The first two runs were scored via a walk, two soft singles and an infield force out before Johnny Mize delivered the only hard-hit ball in the inning with a homer to deep right field.
Right after the Mize homer, an annoyed Erskine was visited at the mound by Dodger manager Chuck Dressen and assumed his day was done. He was admittedly caught off guard when, instead of asking for the ball, Dressen began asking him what his plans were for after the game.
“When I got to Yankee Stadium that morning there was a telegram in my locker from a guy in Texas who I’d played with in the minor leagues,” Erskine related. “It said, ‘Good luck. It’s the fifth game, on the fifth of October and this is your fifth wedding anniversary’. I showed the telegram to our broadcasters, Red Barber and Vince Scully, and Scully took it up to the booth with him.

“Now it’s the fifth inning and I’ve just given up five runs and Dressen’s out there asking me how I feel.
“‘How do you think I feel?’” I said to him.
“Dressen says: ‘I know it’s your anniversary. Got any plans for dinner tonight with Betty?”
“‘As a matter of fact I do,’” I replied.
“‘Well, Dressen says, ‘Mize’s was the only ball hit hard off you. Try to get this game over with so you don’t have to keep her waiting too late.’”
That was it. The reprieved Erskine then went on to retire the next 19 batters in a row and the Dodgers won the game on Duke Snider’s RBI double in the 11th inning. Erskine proceeded to retire the Yankees in order in the bottom of the inning, including Yogi Berra on a game-ending strikeout. (For the record, the time of game was three hours even, which meant Carl and Betty Erskine easily made their seven o’clock dinner reservation.)
“After that last pitch to Yogi, a curveball, I looked at my finger and there was a big blister on it,” Erskine said. “I couldn’t have thrown another pitch in that World Series.”

Years later, Scully picked up the story from Erskine.
“I was up there in the booth going on and on about all those fives in that inning,” Scully said, “and throughout the game I’m desperately looking for anything else with fives. Then when Yogi struck out to end it, I looked up at the scoreboard and, whattaya know? The clock said five minutes past five! True story.”
“It wasn’t until after the game someone pointed out to me that I’d pitched nine no-hit innings in that game, the first pitcher to ever do that,” Erskine said.
During the regular season in ‘52, Erskine was 14-6 with a 2.70 ERA for the Dodgers, including the first of his two career no-hitters, June 19, against the Cubs. Only a four-pitch walk in the third inning to his opposing pitcher, Willard Ramsdell, prevented him from pitching a perfect game. The following year he had his best season, 20-6, and pitched another gem in the World Series.
About the only thing you could say about Erskine’s quick kayo in Game 1 of the ’53 World Series, in which he was removed by Dressen after giving up four runs in the first inning, was that he was well rested for his Game 3 start three days later. In out-dueling Yankee ace Vic Raschi, 3-2, Erskine turned in one of the most dominant starts in World Series history, breaking the 24-year-old Series record by striking out 14 batters, including Mickey Mantle and Joe Collins four times each.
That’s right. When it comes to ignominious postseason “golden sombreros,” before Aaron Judge there was Mickey Mantle.
“The ’53 season was very unusual for me,” Erskine said. “I was only 5-4 at the All-Star break and Dressen said I was just snake bit. I’d pitched really well but had nothing to show for it. Then I went 15-2 in the second half, the best stretch of pitching in my entire career. I had a bad first inning in Game 1 of the World Series when Billy Martin, who set a Series record for hits, got me for a bases-loaded triple. But Dressen was very re-assuring. ‘Don’t worry,’ he told me, “you’re gonna start Game 3.’ Nevertheless, I knew I had to pitch like there was no tomorrow.

“I must have a rush of adrenaline the whole game. I didn’t think about all the strikeouts because nobody told me about the record. Then I struck out Don Bollweg on three high fastballs to start the ninth and I looked to see who’s coming up, pinch hitting for Raschi, and it’s my old nemesis, Johnny Mize.”
Erskine later heard that Mize, the Hall-of-Fame slugger who prided himself for his keen batting eye, had been chastising the Yankee hitters the whole game. When Mize was summoned by Yankee manager Casey Stengel to hit for Raschi, he reportedly shouted to the bench, “I’ll show you guys how to hit Erskine.”
“After I struck Mize out, for number 14 to break the record, he went back to the bench and was given the silent treatment,” Erskine laughed. “I was told Billy Martin said to him: ‘That’s the way you beat Erskine?’ After the game, Preacher Roe came up to me and told me I’d broken the record. I had no idea.”
(The record was later broken by Sandy Koufax with 15 in Game 1 of the ’63 Series and then again by Bob Gibson, with 17 in Game 1 in the ’68 Series.)
The losses to the Yankees in 1952 and ’53 made the Dodgers 0-7 in World Series and only further accentuated the plaintive “wait ’til next year” cry that reverberated throughout Brooklyn every fall. They finally broke through in 1955 when Johnny Podres pitched the brilliant 2-0 shutout of the Yankees and Sandy Amoros made the saving catch in left field off Berra in Game 7. But Erskine lasted just three innings in Game 4, his only start in that Series, and it was evident new Dodger manager Walt Alston didn’t have the same faith in him that Dressen had.
As it was, Erskine, who retired at age 32 in 1959, pitched his entire career with a sore arm, the result of a torn muscle in his shoulder incurred in his very first major league start, against the Cubs, on a cold, damp day in Chicago in 1948. “I struck out Bill Nicholson on a high fastball and I felt this sharp pain in the back of my shoulder,” he said. “But in those days you didn’t dare tell anyone you were hurt. The Dodgers had over 200 pitchers in their minor league system, all looking to take your job. So I kept pitching, periodically taking cortisone shots throughout my career to dull the pain. The doctors told me they didn’t want to cut on it because they might do even more damage. I always had a very live fastball and I didn’t lose much velocity, but I did lose some movement on it. I just never wanted to be known as a sore-arm pitcher.”
Much as his team being back in the World Series brought a warm feeling to October in Indiana for the old Dodger, I could tell it also had rekindled a lot of pent-up heartache. With the Dodgers especially, Erskine said, there were always those October surprises they never saw coming — like Gil Hodges going 0-for-21 with one RBI in the ’52 Series… or Don Newcombe, who led the majors with 27 wins in ’55, getting pounded for six runs and three homers over five innings in his only start in the Dodgers’ lone victorious Brooklyn World Series that year.
“Satisfying as it was, that 1955 team was not our best team,” Erskine said. “By contrast, those ’52-’53 teams (with four Hall-of-Famers, Jackie Robinson, Snider, Roy Campanella and Pee Wee Reese and near Hall-of-Famers, Hodges and Carl Furillo, all in their primes) were in my opinion among the best teams in the history of baseball. But we didn’t win the World Series either year and, to this day, that still hurts me.”

It’s been about 24 hours now since the game ended. Lots of time to process what happened.

The club spent around 200 million on 11 players this summer and our manager is still starting Riccardo Montolivo.

My point? If you want to blame anyone for what happened yesterday, blame Montella. His tactics and his ‘style’ are a mirage. It’s make believe. The man has been handed 11 new players that management spent 200 million on and he clearly has not a clue what to do. The fact that it took him 55 minutes to come up with a plan B yesterday speaks volumes.
On to the ratings. As usual a symbol to represent a performance followed by a comment:
CUTRONE- ? - 13 touches in 55 minutes. No dribbles. No aerials won. No shots. No service at all. Dispossessed twice. If a striker never gets the ball and doesn’t work back to go get the ball, did he play? Your guess is as good as mine.
SUSO - C - My heart tells me that Montella is sticking with the 433 specifically to include and placate Suso. My brain tells he doesn’t fit with this current group and should have been sold. Something I trumpeted all summer Again, I don’t blame him as much as Montella. Notice a theme yet?
BORINI - 7 - He gets my second highest rating because he actually worked. He tracked back, he sat deep to give Monty and RR a hand and actually put in a shift. He didn’t do squat going forward, but at least he defended. I can’t say the same for Cutrone and Suso.
KESSIE- 5 - I’m giving him a 5 because well, he did a few things ok. He tackled and intercepted but also looked very tired. Reminded me of what worried folks about him in the 2nd half last season. He just ran out of gas. It’s September. This can’t happen yet. Montella needs to be careful. Tired players get sloppy and reckless and too often get hurt.
MONTOLIVO - thumbs up - Played out of position but still completed 87% of passes, scored a goal and is still blamed for everything wrong at Milan for the last 5 years. Should Calhanglu have started? Yup. Absolutely. I’ve been saying for 2 years now that in order for this club to get better Montolivo can no longer be a starter. But that’s Montella’s call, not Monty’s. You can’t blame him for taking the field when he sees his name on the team sheet. Yet people want to fault him and act like the following guy played better...
BIGLIA - D - What if I told you a team started a Defensive Midfielder that was dispossessed twice, dribbled by THREE times, had ZERO tackles and ZERO interceptions for a team that gave up 4 goals in 49 minutes? I’d say he shit the bed on the big stage against his former team. A team that is laughing their asses off while rolling around in a hot tub filled with the 15 million we paid for him. This better be the worst we see of him all year. It was putrid. And don’t tell me he played better towards the end. Lazio backed off. Otherwise Immobile scores 5 and it’s 90 minutes of hell instead of 60.
RODRIGUEZ - F - If I had a nickel for every time Alberto came roaring down the right with very little or no opposition I’d be a rich man today. Every time the ball was played to the right it reminded me of this:

A right wing bombing down with no defender in sight. Again and again it happened. Rodriguez was shockingly bad. I dare say Antonelli would have put up a bigger fight and we all know that he stinks. The bigger issue is that if we don’t have a LB that can play any kind of D, we have no choice but to either play a back 3, or start putting Romagnoli at left back when he’s healthy. Like Biglia, let’s hope this is as bad as it gets.
CALABRIA - not bad - He’s never gonna win defender of the year. We know that. He’s fine pushing forward and getting into space. He can put in a cross. But playing defense against an offense first team like Lazio on the road? No chance. He tried but he was in way over his head.
MUSACCHIO/BONUCCI/DONNARUMMA - B+ Imagine for a moment to be the CBs and goalkeeper flanked by 2 fullbacks in over their heads, a DM that was a horror show and 4 ‘attackers’ that were getting run past, dribbled past and pushed around all day? It was like my 12 year old son was picking the other 8 players on FIFA 18. All offense and no defense whatsoever. That’s what these 3 were up against. For a solid 60 minutes they were under constant siege while the other 8 stood by and watched.
CALHANOGLU/JACK/KALINIC - Why these guys didn’t start over Suso Monty and Cutrone I have no idea. Only the manager knows. That was such a naive lineup for Montella to put out there. These 3 guys go out and work. They slow the ball down. They are patient. All qualities that were lacking in yesterdays mess.
FINAL THOUGHTS
We better never see that formation or lineup ever again. Let’s go to the lineup it appears this group was bought to play, 3-5-2.

With our relative lack of defensive fullbacks, i think a back 3 is a must OR we have to put R13 at LB in a 442. After yesterdays performance I think it’s imperative we get 3 CBs on the field together when playing quality competition. Against weaker teams it’s not as big a deal. Up top and in the midfield I think you have a lot of guys that can be moved around (jack, hakan, silva, suso,cutrone, borini, kalinic) til you find the right fit while having a pretty stable back 3 to hold the fort. You also have Monty and Loca that can be rotated through the midfield to rest Kessie, Jack or Biglia at different times. Calabria and Antonelli can be rotated at the wing spots to rest Conti and Rodriguez without sacrificing much D and still getting some offensive push. Abate is your winger/defender to bring in to close out games. Gomez and Zapata help to rotate the back 3.
Makes sense to me at least.
That’s all I got folks. I’m still pissed, but i feel better now.
