For the Love of WIPs (Drarry style)

There's a lot of things I miss about LJ, but right up there was the weekly posting of the H/D Prophet run by @sassy-cissa and groovelover at the conclusion. It began posting in 2005 and It stopped posting in 2021. I know it was a ton of work for the mods to run it, but it truly kept Drarry fandom informed of all the one-shot fics, art released that week, and chapter updates for current Drarry WIPs, recs, etc... Also listed were the fests and what state they were in. Take a look at the links I posted above and see all the goodness. It was very centralized. *sigh happy times*

What made me think of this was I love reading Drarry WIPs but keep finding recent chapter fics that I missed while being posted and only found them completed and others that I'm currently reading but found by chance.

So, I thought I'd share the WIPs I'm keeping track of and those that have been completed recently that I've read.

Notes: Most WIPs (chapter fics) are long fics (over 50K and up to 1M). There are readers that see some lengths of completed fics and wince. That is one reason why chapters are often released weekly or whenever, so you have digestible amounts (5-15K). Sometimes as an author I feel in a Catch 22, readers don't have time to read long fics, but then won't read a WIP until completed. LOL

Below the cut are WIPs that I've read and that have been recently completed. I'll post ongoing WIPs that I'm reading tomorrow! I'm not listing the Warning and Tags for these fics as I'll leave that up for you to decide on what to read or not. But, there are a few here that do have strong warnings in the tags and/or Author Notes. One final note: I'm listing WIPs (chapter fics) that were posted over a time period, not completed chapter fics that were listed on one date as a whole. OMG this is a long post!

Recently completed Drarry WIPs

Passing Stranger (53K) by @lettersbyelise This just completed yesterday! I have 2 chapters left to read. :) Summary: Five years after the war, Harry, listless and depressed, stumbles upon Draco Malfoy playing the violin in an underground bar in Muggle London. The catch? Draco lost his memories five years ago. Ignoring his friends’ advice, Harry befriends an unwitting Draco, overlooking the fact that their mutual attraction might not survive if Draco’s memories return. Comment: Haven't quite finished but I love, love, the Draco in this fic. You could feel that this is Draco stripped of all the heavy responsibilities he grew up with including having a bigoted father. The tension is palpable with Harry being attracted to this Draco but feeling that Draco needs to be Draco Malfoy to move forward. *ugh*. 2. The Boy from the Piano Shop (90.5K) by @soliblomst completed 2/25/24. Summary: After going blind in a reckless attempt to avenge Ginny's death, Harry battles with severe depression. One day, he stumbles upon a quaint piano restoration shop in the heart of London and meets the owner, a kindly old man, and his introverted young apprentice, whose voice sounds strangely familiar. As Harry and Draco slowly reconnect through private piano lessons, the small workshop becomes Harry's refuge, offering him a glimmer of hope in a world without eyes. Set five years after the Battle of Hogwarts. Comment: I binged this fic bad!!! There is so much to love in this fic but one of the standouts is the OC Richard. You will love him, too. The gradual build up of Drarry is so well done. The dealing with Harry's depression is so raw and real. No cutting of corners. The ending was one of the best I've read in celebrating what is to come for Harry and Draco. And Draco, in the final scene will make you cry *happy tears*. 3. The Star Splitter (219K) by @oflights completed 3/22/24. Summary: On a routine time travel assignment to the past, Draco stumbles upon 7-year-old Harry Potter and witnesses his neglect and mistreatment by the Dursleys. In the moment, there is only one solution, even if it goes against all his training as a Time Agent: he has to bring Harry back to the future with him. In which Draco burns his life down for the sake of his former school rival. Comment: I think I followed this one from the start as I do everything @oflights! OMG the action, the tenseness, the magical lore, the worldbuilding, and the sweetness of Draco raising young Harry will have you banging that "next chapter" button. The Drarry in this happens slowly and has its ups and downs but so so worth the wait. The bond is strong and at the end and you will recognize and cheer for this Harry who says Fuck it all, I ain't letting this go.

4. Spotlight (All Eyes on Us) (58K) by @pixiedunhoff completed 3/15/24. This is the 5th and final installment of the Dark Arts to Dance Floor Series (317K) which began posting in July '23. Spotlight Summary: The spotlight can scorch.

“Has the wizarding world ever seen a couple quite like Draco Malfoy and Harry Potter? Though the pair remain frustratingly private and out of the spotlight, hardly ever seen in public together, our readers understandably demand to know more.

‘They’re happy together,’ Minister of Magic Hermione Granger exclusively tells the Prophet, before quickly ducking into a meeting for Squib Rights. ‘They’re so very happy.’”

- Daily Prophet, 2 February 2018 Comment: Pixie says in the notes, you may only need to read the 4th installment to completely get this fic, but hell, I say read them all. Pixie is newer to Drarry writing (longtime reader). I love the casualness and realness of the characters and how they interact. In Spotlight they so capture the feel of being backstage to a 'music rock star' (in the Muggle world) and on the rise in the magical one. As you're reading this fic, it might come across as being a lighter AU type fic, but don't be fooled there is much depth and layers upon layers to both Harry and Draco. Pixie just eases you into it. There were points that I just had to stop reading for a moment and digest exactly what was going on. Pixie will be on my Current WIP list, too! 5. Skybound (61K) by @xanthippe74 Summary: No matter how much Harry Potter wanted to believe he’d left danger behind when the war ended, it found him again anyway. All he had to do was step out his own front door on a Tuesday morning. A Drarry re-imagining of Howl’s Moving Castle.

Comment: I haven't finished this one, yet, but wanted to list it here. It's 6 chapters and I'm only 2 chapters in, but holy hell what world building and magical lore (and one very nasty curse). I'm not familiar with the original source, but that's okay. I'm very happy being carried along in one floating house! I'm a big fan of @xanthippe74 and am fully confident I'll love this as much as the author's other stories. Okay, I'll be back tomorrow with a list of currently posting Drarry WIPs, including two stinging hot A/B/Os, but in very different ways.

Harry Potter Rec Fest Day 10 - Fest Fics

Outside of @etl-echo-audiobooks fests (see Winter Wonderfics 2022 and Draco's Quarter Life Crisis Fest 2023), this is my first year participating in fests, including @hprecfest. I've had so much fun and met some really lovely people. I'm so grateful to this fandom for being so welcoming and constantly coming up with new, fun ideas for fests. And of course to all the participating authors, artists, podficcers, and endlessly patient and hardworking mods for shepherding all these new works out into the universe.

Amorous As This Lovely Green written by @annanother-thing for @hd-fan-fair Career Fair Pairing: Lingerie Designer Draco x Unwilling Celebrity Harry Word count: 14,646 Rating: E

This fic just flies by. The descriptions are so great, I could picture every lacy frill of the lingerie that Harry models. It's hot and sweet and has typically great banter. Thank you @annanother-thing! And an additional thank you to @hd-fan-fair; they've really developed something special. Besides the more than a decade's worth of fics they've collected, they have a competitive reading contest to encourage commenting and reccing during the anonymous posting period. It was so much fun to participate and I encourage everyone to join in next year! And read everything from this year's fest; it's a treasure trove of really interesting and diverse fics.

So this rec is really for @semperfiona, who is an exemplary podficcer with over 50 podfics under her belt. This fic is very sweet (part of Saras_Girl's Fluffy!Verse) and @semperfiona renders it perfectly in audio form.

I was excited when I found this fic, because it's not just one AU, it's a bunch. Harry is traveling through various alternative universes trying to get back to his own. There's one common thread throughout: Severus. This fic is heartbreaking and sad because not all AUs are bad for Harry. When I decided to record this, I hadn't really thought about the number of characters I would need to voice, including some original characters. I think it's worth a listen or a read on the strength of the writing alone.

Lining up guests for Happy Hour brings me lots of joy. It's like going on a vacation - half the fun is planning the trip and anticipating. Here in the library, half the fun is building friendships and getting excited for what fics they're going to recommend! When I was planning the December spot, I knew it HAD to be @babooshkart. I fell in love with their Holiday art series last year, and knew that they were the perfect person to give us a Holiday Happy Hour this year! She didn't disappoint - and managed to give me the gift of a Christmas fic I hadn't yet read!

More gifts are in store, so please without further ado, enjoy the gift of @babooshkart in the library!

I’ve been a mildly worshipful fan of the Library (and its Librarian) for a while, so it was such an honor to be asked to host this month’s Happy Hour! Especially as it was my opportunity to do a Christmas rec, which meant rereading a lot of holiday fics, which has put me in the most delightfully Christmassy mood—wins all around. Our lovely Librarian is an expert planner, so thanks to their schedule I’ve had the last six months to peruse all of their previous Holiday Lists (see end of this post for links!). The Librarian is thorough—it was a challenge to find one that hasn’t already been recc’d; I really wanted to shine the spotlight on a fic that brought me a lot of joy during the last Christmas season, so please join me in cuddling up under a blanket with some (spiked?) cocoa and this gorgeous story.

A Melody of You & Me by @academicdisaster (64,838 words, rated E)

Draco Malfoy has a Christmas choir competition to win, and Harry Potter has an orphanage that needs funding. When Luna Lovegood intervenes, they agree to help each other out: Harry will join the choir if Draco chooses to sponsor his charity.

But agreeing to work together also means getting to know each other again - in new and unexpected ways.

Ft. a chaotic festive choir, scheming friends, a healthy dose of mental health issues, one very irritating ex, and boys learning how to love and be loved.

This fic was written for 25 Days of Harry and Draco 2021, and I was lucky enough to get to witness it coming into existence. Rooney is a lovely person and an extremely gifted storyteller—I first fell in love with his writing with Sourdough (romance novelist Draco!!!! baking Harry!!! what more could you possibly ask for!!), and have been entranced ever since. His fics are a masterclass in soft intimacy (my favorite!!!) and every single one leaves me aching with feelings in the best way possible.

With A Melody, Rooney drops us into the middle of a busy holiday season—Healer Draco (another favorite thing!!! can we see a pattern here?) is scrambling to pull together a charity choir after his cheating ex boyfriend steals half his singers for a rival group. Across the city, Harry Potter is running out of energy, time, and money for the Hedwig Centre (Grimmauld Place transformed into a home for traumatized magical children), and needs sponsors a home of his own, therapy, to get laid fast. Enter Draco’s BFF/BAMF Lavender Brown and the ever-delightful Luna Lovegood, and everyone’s problems might just get solved in the best way possible.

This fic is everything I could ever want out of a Drarry holiday story. I always love it when Harry and Draco have careers that let them care for people, and Rooney has gone above and beyond by creating a whole cast of original characters that are extraordinarily lovable—from the children that Harry works with at the Hedwig Centre, to Frieda and Lennox the German choir singers with their special brownies and drunken carols, to one of Draco’s favorite patients—Anita, a firecracker of a little old lady who is arguably too interested in Draco’s sex life. Rooney has built up a gorgeous framework of interlocking relationships, in a way that can only make you feel surrounded and held and part of a little found family while you read, and I will never not be in love with that.

This fic also deals with Harry’s unresolved trauma in a way that feels tender and intentional, which is something that I always yearn for and boy howdy has Rooney delivered. We get to watch as Draco notices and cares for Harry through a panic attack, as Harry learns how to accept (and ask for) support, and as their friends and family ensconce them in love. Too often, I feel like fics skim over the fact that Harry has lost his entire family and also died, but Rooney held all of this in his talented hands and worked through it, piece by piece. Especially for a fic that is set during the holiday season, which can already be full of strife, Rooney has created a strong and caring network of people to hold Harry and Draco while they venture into their new relationship. I love to feel feelings.

I could talk forever about this fic, but I will leave you all with "please go read this and then come and yell about it with me." Thanks for the tag @lqtraintracks @shealwaysreads and @tackytigerfic . It was so lovely reading through yours - what absolute bangers!! And so to my own Most Popular and two "Hidden Gems" (though I sort of feel it's not up to me to make that judgement tbh).

Most Popular: December Never Felt So Wrong (50k, E)

This fic has the most kudos, so I suppose that makes it the most popular? Written in a frenzied whirlwind back in 2018 for the 25 Days of Draco & Harry fest, the premise is that 16-year-old Draco wakes up one morning and he's suddenly a 31-year-old man with a young child, and worst of all, his most-hated classmate is now his boyfriend. It seems to be one that people have enjoyed 💗 It's light on angst, given it's premise, has a little bit of case-fic-mystery, and it's high on domesticity and family feels and love (with some smut thrown in). It's been criticised by some readers because of the fact Draco is mentally 16, but to me that's the whole fun of the premise 🤷‍♂️ Draco has 15 years to catch up on. Can he get over his past (and present) and let himself be loved by his bum-wiggling arch-nemesis?

(Also, the fic was remixed for HD Remix 2021 (author currently anon) into a wonderful Harry POV called The Coldest of Days, which I highly rec.)

Excerpt:

Draco found himself on a dark landing and made his way quietly downstairs. The hallway below seemed familiar but he was too disquieted to think about that now. His brain was busy trying to recall all the defensive spells he’d taken down off the blackboard the day before, when he was hit with a scent of cinnamon and cloves.

Light spilled from an open door at the end of the hall. His pulse hammering in his ears, Draco approached the door, wand at the ready, and peered into a bright kitchen.

He was met with the alarming sight of what was very definitely Potter. Potter, who he’d seen the day before shovelling down sticky toffee pudding in the Great Hall—in between bouts of scowling at Draco with narrowed eyes—was now standing in this strange kitchen, wearing a tight white t-shirt and red patterned pyjama bottoms. Potter, currently facing away from him, shaking his bum and singing:

“They say I'm really sexy, the boys they wanna sex me.”

Hidden Gem 1 : Aaah why is this so hard?! Ok, I'm choosing Be careful what you hiss for (5.6k, E)

I've chosen this because it's fun, and a bit naughty! It was written for Drarry Spin the Wheel fest, and I was SO excited to get 'parseltongue', 'Auror partners' and 'dirty talk'. I loved writing it, and hopefully that shows.

Excerpt:

Potter always makes such good coffee, despite not drinking it himself, opting for strong milky tea every time. I groan in appreciation at the hot satisfying feeling of it warming and invigorating me.

And then I almost choke on it.

Because the hissing has begun. Already!

‘Sss-eth-arth lish-esseth.’

I quickly mutter the charm under my breath, and my ear starts to tingle right away. The hissing continues but it sounds like words now.

‘—not fair. Do you realise the noises you make? I want to make you moan like that.’

My mouth drops open in a gasp, and I only realise I’ve dropped my mug when Potter jumps up and begins digging in his robes for his wand. I look down and coffee is pouring off the desk and onto my trousers, and then I’m on my feet too, cursing up a storm.

“Tergeo!” Potter shouts, pointing his wand at me, and I feel my crotch drying up instantly. And then, with his mouth barely moving, a hissed, ‘God, I just want to drop to my knees, get my hands inside your pants and clean you up with my mouth.’

“Potter!” I say, shocked. 

“What? You had coffee on you? Jus’ doing you a bloody favour.”

I'm at an absolute loss as to what to say. 

Hidden Gem 2 : Harry, Harry, Quite Contrary (3.8k, T)

I've chosen this because it's silly and an homage to small-town England and involves a neurotic garden-obsessed Draco and an infuriatingly irreverent Harry. Again, it was fun to write, so that's probably why I remember it fondly. There's a brilliant podfic too by @timothysboxers!

Excerpt:

Upper Itchington was one of those wizarding villages.

You know the type. The ones that hold regular village fêtes involving homemade marmalade stalls, a hoopla and a coconut shy, and events such as pumpkin-tossing, flobberworm-racing and broom rides for little kids. And of course, yards and yards of pastel-coloured floral bunting. The sort of village with a tight-knit community where everyone knows your business, and if they don't you'll be regarded with high suspicion. The type of place with a strong pride in its local small businesses, and where if you can't buy a thing in Abbott's Ironmongers, well, it just isn't a thing worth having. 

One of the things the residents of Upper Itchington particularly enjoyed was a contest, be it the best Victoria sponge, or the largest marrow, or the bonniest baby. But there was one contest, held every Midsummer’s day, that was especially popular: the tidiest and most charming street. There was even a highly-coveted prize.

The villagers took pride in their neighbourhoods being neat and pretty and orderly—whether they contained large Tudor-style houses or quaint thatched cottages or rows of red-brick terraced houses—and none more so than local resident and renowned Prophet columnist Draco Malfoy.

Draco was proud to say that his street, Foxglove Close, was always one of the prettiest, and took any opportunity to talk about it. Everyone on the croquet team, in the Gobstones club and even at the bingo hall had heard all about how Draco and his neighbours had won the prize three years running. It was no secret that Foxglove Close was aiming to make it four in a row, and Draco just knew they could achieve it.

But that was before Harry Potter moved into the neighbourhood.

Arg! I'd hoped to spend sometime planting the pretty flowers I bought yesterday but to my dismay I discovered an invasive weed was mixed in with my Shasta Daisies, which are just about to bloom. The kind of weed that attaches to your clothes and skin. Gloves came out and two hours later, I made a huge dent. Flowers tomorrow.

I had mentioned there were would be additional categories I'd throw into the mix and today I have one I've been anxious to get to. I'm going to call it Magical Elves. They are the people who help make fandom run. I mentioned @phoenixacid in an earlier post, who has been hosting @hd-fan-fair for ten years. This category will cover folks like her and that do even more...yes, even more...

What I'm reading:

On the Discord Drarry Fans Writers and Artists there is a channel for recs. I stole this one from there but then discovered I'd already read it. However, it was long enough ago that I don't remember all of the details. I think I read it when it first came out and before I hopped back into fandom in spring of 2021. The Ordeal of Being Known (146k) by @lou-isfake. I'm only on chapter 3 right now but I just love this Draco and his Oscar the Grouch house-slippers and his house-elf Timsy. The writing is so fresh and clever, I find myself smiling most of the time. Here's the summary, which I think gives you a flavor of the writing style I'm talking about:

Ron is annoyingly hot, Hermione sees right through you, Harry is a powerful idiot, and Draco is a reclusive masochist that would buy an entire city if it would make a kid happy. The first person I want to highlight in this category is actually someone I've met in person at HP Cons and we've stayed in touch over the years in real life. *hugs darlin* You've probably seen @sassy-cissa's name as an author or maybe an email asking you about a fic for a fest but I'm betting most of you have no idea how much she's done for fandom for more than a decade and half, especially for Drarry fandom.

Let me list the ways in how awesome she is:

Co-mod for H/D Erised from 2014 to 2018 Moderated the H/D Prophet from about 2016 to 2021

See that last one H/D Prophet. Take a look at the link just for a moment. Every Drarry WIP that was updated that week was listed, fests' status, drabble prompts, etc...Every single week. The prophet soon closed down after a few more months due to lack of participation (fandom had moved away from LJ).

So I know this is long but I just want folks to be aware of those working in the background, making our experience here in fandom enjoyable and filled with lovely content. They truly are magical elves. Sassy doesn't post much on Tumblr or on Discord but she does pop-in now and then. Next time you see her name, you'll now know who she is.

My new Advent fic for our darling 25 days of Drarry 2021.

Summary: Adolescence is tough for teens and parents alike. Or: Harry has a thing for older guys, Draco has a homophobic pure-blood family, Lily doesn’t have the patience, Sirius needs another drink, Narcissa asks for help, James is a good dad, Snape wishes he wasn’t involved at all, and Remus just really wanted to have a chill Christmas break for a change.

This fic is about falling in love for the first time, about healing toxic patterns, about exploring honest chats, healthy relationship dynamics and supportive parental figures.

Warnings: 17 year old romance. Divorced parents; magical AU in which there was no war; everybody lives; Harry hooks up with older guy out of the scenes; Draco has a platonic crush on Sirius. The rating may change.
