“You’ll be back. This house is dripping with souls, but there’s always room for one more.” 🎩👻 For my second painting in my “Happy Haunts Mini Portraits” series, we have The Hatbox Ghost, or, as some of you may know him from the newer Haunted Mansion movie, Alistair Crump! This painting was so much fun to do! I can’t wait to get started on the next one! This artwork was done with acrylic paints (most of the whole thing is), watercolor brush pens, and ink! This original painting is up for sale for 35 USD! DM for purchase! (This will be available until I come back and put “SOLD” in the caption later on! If you don’t see the word and want this artwork at anytime, just DM me to buy it! (Same with everything I’ve posted so far!) Width: 3 1/2 Inches Height: Nearly 6 Inches My commissions are open, DM for info! ✩︎
Keep in mind I’ve only seen the movie once in theaters and it’s going to be awhile till it’s out on DVD to do a true rewatch, but while it’s still fresh on the brain I want to say this…
⚠️slight plot spoilers ahead
I wish they would have tugged on the thread a little harder when it comes to the other ghosts fear. They have a really good set up when it comes down to it. In the montage scene setting up the cameras there’s a really ominous moment “wait…I know that look. They’re running from something” this really sits with the audience. What scares a ghost?!
Then when Ben is having the “reverse exorcism” we see how scared the other spirits really are. I mean running and hiding in anything they can find terrified . We see a woman crawl on her hands and knees into a cabinet! We see a ghost panic and possess a candle for crying out loud. It’s great set up! In that moment it also really works as Ben is to busy running with everyone else to even focus on what he came to figure out.
I wanted them to tug on this a bit more? I don’t know how, don’t get me wrong the movie does everything well but I wish it was utilized more— it both is and isn’t. Everyone just goes “yeah he’s terrifying they’re right” and leaves it at that. Which then again it doesn’t need that much more explanation after lore is hammered out.
"Our tour begins here in this gallery, where you see paintings of some of our guests as they appeared in their corruptible, (im)mortal state."
I've had this concept in my head for a while, of various Lore Olympus characters as the stretching portraits in the Haunted Mansion. Where did this idea come from? I don't know, but both Lore Olympus and Disney are a huge comfort for me so I'm not surprised it happened.
Should I make this into a whole series? I have a few ideas, and maybe I'll extend it to more than just the portraits, but other Haunted Mansion characters too
Relocating my art from one blog to another is tiring but it will be worth it at the end. I will reblog this acc to my main so you can see where my hm art will be now.
Wonderful Things That May or May Not Be Wonderful
For years of development, Imagineers couldn't decide whether their new haunted house attraction should be spooky or silly. This was only brought to light when one brave soul asked "Por que no los dos?" and it became so. Not only does this teach us the value of compromise, it also gives us one of Disney's best experiences. Spine tingling visual illusions, an iconic ghost host, an iconic main tune with Grim Grinning Ghosts and nine hundred and ninety nine happy haunts all ready for a swinging wake. And that's just the Disneyland and WDW variations. Disneyland Paris' Phantom Manor has a wild west backdrop, a grim backstory, and Vincent Price. Disneyland Hong Kong's Mystic Manor doesn't have any departed spirits due to cultural customs but it does have a trackless ride system, a demonic music box, and some spectacular visuals. Regardless of the theme, regardless of the location, regardless of the ghosts, one thing is clear with this Disney Classic: There's always room for one more. Any volunteers?!
