Wonderful Things That May or May Not Be Wonderful!!! If you hear and are familiar with the term “video game shooter”, my assumption is that you’re probably not thinking of the Splatoon games. Makes sense, they are quite different from the pillars of the genre like Call of Duty and Doom. They’re bright, colorful, taking down the opposition is secondary to covering the entire stage in your team's color of ink, and you can turn into a squid and swim through the ink you spray. From the weapons to the stages to the gameplay to the style, there is a level of fun and creativity that is emblematic of Nintendo at their best. And while the game is primarily multiplayer, They all have great single player campaigns that carries these same traits with them. I've have a wonderful time any time I pop in for some matches and I hope that continues every time I return. Until then, stay fresh! P.S. Splatoon 2 really should have been called Spla2n…and now that I write it out, I immediately regret everything.

Wonderful Things That May or May Not Be Wonderful!!! You know the saying “Up a creek without a paddle”? It refers to a difficult situation, with no way of getting out. Real paddles would only help if such a situation involved a boat, ping-pong or mixing concrete. Still, it's better to have a paddle than not and that’s wonderful.

Wonderful Things That May or May Not Be Wonderful!!! Walt Disney World is 27,000 acres large, the same size as the city of San Francisco and twice the size of Manhattan Island except most of the surface area is roads and swampland. As such, walking everywhere isn’t the best idea. There are a few other options for making your way around the “world” and one way to do so is Disney Skyliner: a gondola system connecting the EPCOT and Disney Hollywood Studios theme parks to four resort hotels and each other. Specifically, four hotels that were originally only connected to everywhere else through WDW’s semi-reliable shuttle service. Now, they have a quick loading and quick moving alternative to half of the theme parks. A big plus if you ask me but there’s more!  Riders also get the experience flying over the aforementioned roads and swampland while the wind blows through the vents as they glance below. Fun fact: They look better from above than ground level.  The gondolas even come in several designer colors and overlays based on Disney IPs. Really, the only downsides are getting stuck on it and the occasional unflattering backstage view (but I know some people eat that stuff up). Other than that, perfectly wonderful!

Wonderful Things That May or May Not Be Wonderful!!! The Pangolin a.k.a. the “Scaly Anteater”. It should be known for its unique looking scales, cute appearance and ability to roll up into a ball. Instead, they are known as “the world’s most trafficked non-human mammal” and that’s not wonderful. Save the Pangolin. They’re wonderful!

Wonderful Things That May or May Not Be Wonderful!!! Nine balls. One ramp. Multiple targets. Only glory and tickets on the line. That is the game known as Skee-Ball. A game of skill and finesse that will continue to drain the hard earned dollars of everyone who sees it. It's just that wonderful…and fun. Did I mention fun?

Wonderful Things That May or May Not Be Wonderful!!! Pineapple. Delicious fruit. Symbol of hospitality. Tropical cocktail cup. A key component in classic Dole Whip and upside down cake. A unique looking and delightfully sweet and juicy treat. Plus, it goes wonderfully on pizza.  I regret nothing. I’ll just eat some pineapple.

Wonderful Things That May or May Not Be Wonderful!!! Did you know? Stuff gets between your teeth. Nasty stuff like food and plaque. Your toothbrush just won’t cut it but you know what will? Floss! The rolled up strands of nylon that do the job and we forget to use despite our dentists reminding us every time we go! So wonderful! P.S. It can also taste like last Sunday's post!

Wonderful Things That May or May Not Be Wonderful!!! You know what’s wonderful: walking. Other modes of transportation may get you where you want to go faster but using our own power has its benefits. Doesn’t cost money, gets you exercise, and you can do it anywhere you wish. Plus, it's quite relaxing. Nothing like a good walk.

Wonderful Things That May or May Not Be Wonderful!!! Inside their studio theater, the world famous Muppets sit and watch their very first feature length movie. An origin story about a talented frog whose meeting with a Hollywood agent sends him on a quest across the country meeting many like-minded animals and monsters all with the same dream: to become rich, famous and make millions of people happy. For a first film, The Muppet Movie is fantastic. You could even call it a classic. Sure, it’s a tad worn-out around the edges with many jokes and celebrity cameos that only your seniors will recognize. But that far from negates the passion, love and creativity that permeates this film. The puppet wizardry in this film alone makes it worthy of dropped jaws. Add Paul Williams’ songs and that good old Muppet wit and charm and I don’t know how this film could be anything less than wonderful. A feel good film perfect for the lovers, the dreamers and you (and me!).

Wonderful Things That May or May Not Be Wonderful!!! Vikings are awesome but what kinds of games did they play? Answer: not ones with surviving rulesets. An issue when you want to add an existing ancient Viking game into your soon to be existing modern Viking game. This was the problem that was faced by the development team of Assassin's Creed: Valhalla. A problem they solved by creating a brand new dice game based on a bunch of ancient dice games. They called it Orlog after the Viking concept of fate and it is fantastic. It’s a two player dice game where the goal is to knock your opponent’s HP down to zero. You do this by taking turns rolling sets of six dice each trying to create the right combination to both attack and block your opponent’s attacks. But that’s not all. Both players also get their choice of three Norse gods they can invoke. Doing so requires gaining God Favor by landing gold-trimmed die faces or stealing it from your opponent and once you have enough, you can do all sorts of things like damage, healing, re-rolling dice, sacrificing health to get more Favor and so much more. Being a dice game, there’s quite a bit of luck involved but there is still plenty of strategy and decision making to go with it. What gods do you want? How do you want to use said god powers? What dice do I keep and what do I re-roll? It all adds up to a wonderful game that's perfect to play in between drinking mead and pillaging monasteries. P.S. For the record, I haven’t played Assassin's Creed: Valhalla. My friend bought the physical version and we've had a lot of fun playing it together. That’s why this post exists. Remember playing games with friends and family is absolutely wonderful.

Wonderful Things That May or May Not Be Wonderful!!! Sometimes you can’t just pick up your food. Sometimes you need to stab it. That’s where forks come in. Such a simple tool in concept and execution yet so helpful for edible consumption especially of things that are too hot and/or too messy. Yep, that’s why forks are wonderful
P.S. Please remember to never stick your forks in toasters and electrical outlets and always clean them after using them to curl your hair.

BONUS WONDERFUL!!!: 26 years after their debut, this line of Pokemon got an update in the new Legends Arceus game…or more like a downdate since the game takes place in the world’s distant past. Instead of copying the form of modern Pokeballs, the Hisuian variant takes on a more ancient and wooden appearance. It isn’t just cosmetic though. It also gives them a unique Electric/Grass typing and the unique move Chloroblast. Plus, it makes Voltorb look absolutely adorable. I mean, look at this short film The Pokemon Company released. Sold it a spot on my team that’s for sure.

Wonderful Things That May or May Not Be Wonderful!!! Ah yes, the ball and sphere Pokémon. When you first look at these two, the first thing that may come to mind is how uninspired their designs seem to be. I mean, Voltorb is just a fake poke ball with eyes and Electrode is the same thing with its colors flipped. However, I feel the rabbit hole goes deeper. You see, these living orbs are actually based on a particular tradition that they also fulfill within their respective games: That of the Mimic: an enemy that takes the form of a treasure chest or helpful item before ruining your day when it’s revealed what they truly are. Most of the time, this idea is not well-handled leading to a lot of frustration. There are games that make it work though. I feel that Pokémon is one such example. I mean what would you rather have: A bunch of elixirs you are never going to use or a fun new spherical friend who can paralyze foes, set up defensive barriers, and get in some damage before the opposition can even blink. Yep, way more wonderful than elixirs.
P.S. I’d feel wrong if I didn’t mention the special move, Explosion, which allows the user to do massive damage to everyone around them by blowing themselves up. While it isn’t exclusive to Voltorb & Electrode, they are probably the most associated with the technique. I don’t know if I’d call self-destruction wonderful but it does fit with these guys bomb-like shape and trap-like placement. Plus, it gets more dangerous enemies off the field so the rest of your team can succeed which is definitely helpful.
P.S.S. I'd also be kicking myself if I didn’t make mention of Electrode’s smug little grin. That right there? That’s beautiful.

Wonderful Things That May or May Not Be Wonderful!!! Mint is quite the overpowering herb. Whether it's in candy or toothpaste, a garnish or ingrained, you don’t need a packaging label to tell you what’s in there. That viscerally icy yet strangely pleasing flavor is unmistakable no matter the variety. Dare I say, it’s wonderful.

Wonderful Things That May or May Not Be Wonderful!!! It’s important to add a splash of color into one’s surroundings. But how does one do that? Why with paint! Any surface can be made pleasing to the eye with the correct application of this protective substance. That is the wonderful power of paint. Please use responsibly.

Use a roof…but this post is about the former two. After all, what other wonderful accessories blend stylish sophistication and weather warding together?

Wonderful Things That May or May Not Be Wonderful!!! Oh, Avatar (the one with the blue cat people specifically). A franchise that has made so much money yet made so little visible impact on the film landscape outside of popularizing 3D films for a few years. I never contributed to that particular gross profit but what I have done is visit Disney’s Animal Kingdom’s newest land based on the first film and the metric ton of worldbuilding they did for it. Overall, I like The World of Pandora. It has an amazing atmosphere (especially at night), one of WDW’s best counter service restaurants and one of its best attractions: Flights of Passage, our subject for today.  FoP is an experience that uses a bike-like vehicle, 3-d glasses and a massive screen to simulate an aerial joyride across an alien planet atop an alien dragon. That’s right, this attraction is the closest you can feasibly get to riding on top of your very own dragon. A fantasy we can all get behind, I’m sure. It is primarily spectacle over substance but that spectacle is oh so spectacular. The environments, the movement, the soundtrack, the technology, it all comes together so beautifully that the first few times I rode it, I forgot that I was on a theme park ride. For Pete's sake, your ride vehicle simulates your alien dragon mount’s breathing. If that isn’t wonderful, I don’t know what is.
P.S. Quick shout out to one of the best queues in Walt Disney World. It has everything you could ever want while waiting in line: Waterfall caves, glowing caves, crazy sci-fi experiments, a big blue cat man in a tube, decontamination for microparasites, Sigourney Weaver and a bathroom halfway through. What’s not to love?
P.S.S. This is my Mom’s favorite attraction at Walt Disney World. Just thought I’d get that out there in case she is reading this.
P.S.S.S. Seriously, Satuli Canteen (the aforementioned counter service restaurant) is so good. Give it a try if you ever go to Animal Kingdom.
