Rap Songs to Relive My 2018-2022
In the above playlist is some of my favorite songs over the years, each being under the theme of melodic rap/hip hop. With the ability to track the date of when you added songs to your playlists on the Spotify website, the special theme of this playlist to me, is each of some of my top songs year by year. These songs were released close to when I found and added them as well, each being released the year I found them or the December of the year before. Each of these songs represents a certain event that I instantly recall, during the time when I would listen to these songs.
Noticed, by Lil Mosey, was written in 2018 and was the year I first started listening to it. This was my freshman year in high school, and was one of the first songs I remember listening to during this time. As I would pass the halls or do busy work in class, this would be one of the many songs I would listen to. Over time, I began to grow bored of the song, however now, when I listen to it I get nostalgic feelings and the vibes of reliving my freshman year which seemed like ages ago. While Noticed did receive some backlash by the public, saying that it was "basically a logical yet utterly unimpressive attempt at a modern Fetty Wap" (Singles Jukebox), I would have to disagree. While yes, I think that the song is pretty generic and not really unique, I believe that that fact doesn't take away the song's success. I, as well as many other of my friends who were of the target age of this song I would say, enjoyed this song and found that it was an extremely good listen for just about whatever. Another thing to consider is the artist's age at the time, 16, which is something that is extremely impressive when you really think about it. The kid was one to two years older than I was at the time, so considering that he was able to attract the attention of some random freshman in North Jersey, I would say he must have done something right. All in all, this is a song that I look back on and relive the memory of my freshman years.
Look Back at It, written by A Boogie, was released in December of 2018/beginning of 2019, was the song that I would attribute to the tail end of my 2019 to. The particular memory that I think of when I listen to this song would be the long bus rides to school every morning. Starting my sophomore year in high school, I would take the bus to school instead of getting a ride from my parents. Because I was one of the first stops, normal bus rides would take somewhere between an hour and an hour fifteen for me to get school. In music translation: this meant I had a LOT of time on my hands to listen to music, Look Back at It, being one of them. This song, similar to Noticed, also received its fair share of backlash, some saying that "The song features a stripped down pop instrumental, both some mushy and trill words from Boogie, and lots of hypnotizing vibes" (RGM). To some extent, now that I look back at it (no pun intended), the song does get monotonous and sometimes repetitive throughout. However, I believe that the story and melody behind the song contributes to its overall success, and really stuck with me during that year. Less of an upbeat song, but rather a more depressing one, this song is somewhat different from A Boogie's usual work, and I guess to some extent, that's what I appreciated about this song so much.
Heartless. The oddball I would say of this group of 5. Released by the Weekend in late 2019/early 2020, Heartless was the song I would attribute to my 2020. During the time of the COVID lockdown, it seemed like the social media platform "TikTok" was taking over my life. With nothing to do, I spent hours on this app to pass the time, and that was where I found this song. At first I hadn't thought anything of it, but as I continued to hear this song played over and over again, on the radio, on social media, etc., it started to get stuck in my head. Thus, I would say that Heartless was the prominent song that I would attribute my 2020 to. While some of these memories aren't extremely great to remember, as the pandemic wasn't exactly a great time, this was a song that has prominently reminded me of my 2020.
2021, the tail end of my junior year into the start of my senior year. This was around the time when we were allowed to start going back to school in person, and so that experience was very relieving after the 1 and a half year prison we were in. Juniors were allowed to drive and park to school, however I was too young for my license at the time, so my friend drove me and a bunch of my other friends who were in a similar situation. And, as the common rule goes, whoever drives gets aux. Thus, I was introduced to J. Cole and his new album The Offseason, but more specifically, the song my.life. From that day on I fell in love, not only with the album, but the artist J. Cole himself. I talked about J. Cole in my blog post here, so you should definitely give that a read to see my opinions on the song. This song always brings me good vibes when I give it a listen, I picture the energetic morning car rides, with J. Cole being blasted at max volume with the windows open. To me, this song is more than just my favorite song during my junior year of high school. To me, it represents the freedom from the pandemic and the happy attributions to the return of in person schooling.
Finally, last but not least, Jimmy Cooks by Drake. Oddly enough, I had been a fan of Drake's work for a while, but hadn't kept up with his recent stuff for a while. This song however, put me right back in the loop and reminded me why I liked his music in the first place. While it was no "mind blowing" experience, it was still a song that gave me a Drake vibe. The beat, flow, melody, everything about it just screamed Drake. I first heard this song when I was working out, and I had ironically forgotten my airpods that day so I just settled with whoever was on the gym aux. Even something crazier, was the fact that this song was playing when I hit my max on the bench press at the time, so now when I listen to this song it's always attributed with good memories and pumps me up when I go to the gym. Many describe the song as "the most high-energy, lucid moment of the record" (Vulture), and I couldn't agree more. While my 2022 isn't over yet, I would say that as of right now it is the song that I think of when I think of my 2022. The end of my high school chapter and the start of a new one in college.
All in all, I would say that this playlist can be used for anything. Early morning drive to work? Long workout session? Bus ride to school? I would say that this range of music can make these periods of time go at least a little bit faster. Even if it doesn't, this playlist is very personal to me, because these songs are what I attribute to each year. When these songs, and some others too, but these in particular, I can immediately recall all the memories of when I was listening to these songs, whether they be good or bad. And so, I thought why not share my personal life with the public through my life as kid in high school through the songs I was listening to.

Nas - King’s Disease II ALBUM REVIEW
Tumblr media
Almost exactly a year ago, Nas teamed up with Hit-Boy for his thirteenth studio album King’s Disease which I loved and rank highly in Nas’s almost untouchable catalog of music. I feel like in terms of his albums post-Distant Relatives, Nas does not really need to prove anything and can just make great music as he pleases because he has done so much for Hip Hop and has put out such great music. I don’t think Nas has any bad albums but some are definitely better than others. The first King’s Disease showed how Nas is able to rap over whatever he pleases whether it is a more traditional style instrumental or more modern hip hop production that Hit-Boy is known for. Hit-Boy did an amazing job at supplying Nas with some great beats and less than a year removed from the first King’s Disease, I was hoping to get some more of the mature Nas that reflects on his journey but is still plenty confident that he can tear up a beat. Right out the gate with The Pressure, Nas comes out snapping and does not miss a beat. That song sets quite the standard as Nas goes crazy and the production is insane, as is that beat switch towards the end. One thing I noticed more on this one than the first King’s Disease is that Hit-Boy’s production is a bigger star of the show than last time. The production on that first one was great but I feel like it stands out more on this album. Hit-Boy’s production across this entire album is phenomenal. There’s such a good amount of variety and even if it doesn’t reinvent the wheel, it feels refreshing for Nas and it is not always predictable which is nice. Nas’s subject matter for certain beats fits them well and makes them into great songs. On Death Row East, Nas reminisces on his run-ins with Suge Knight and his relationship with 2Pac during an escalating East Coast/West Coast rivalry. He also gets into reflecting on Nobody which features Lauryn Hill and this time she’s actually rapping. Her flow sounds like she hasn’t rapped in a while but the bars are still there. She raps “My awareness like Keanu in The Matrix / I'm savin' souls and y'all complainin' 'bout my lateness” in reference to being known for showing up to her shows late. One of the better storytelling tracks is Moments where Nas talks about the “moments you can’t relive.” That song is great especially in the context where Nas is older and is in a position as a legend in a genre that has never seen aging rappers before and can talk about grown-up subjects. Nas isn’t exactly that old though and old doesn’t mean that can can’t spar with the newcomers. The first King’s Disease saw him collaborating with guys like Lil Durk, Don Toliver, Fivio Foreign and A$AP Ferg and made those collaborations work extremely well even if they weren’t one’s you would expect. The song YKTV shows Nas linking with A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie and YG which reads weirdly on paper but is a different story once you hear it. I wasn’t sure about the beat at first but I loved it when the bass came in and it all came together. The features didn’t disappoint either even if I thought they would. A Boogie had a good line where he said “Been jackin' Esco' bars like he Pablo, huh.” Nas also recruits Blxst who is one of the more talented new artists in my opinion for Brunch On Sundays, which is a great song about enjoying time with your girl. One thing I noticed on the first King’s Disease that is much more prevalent on this album that I really enjoy is when Nas gets to rapping about food and making good food choices for a healthy lifestyle which I guess fits the King’s Disease theme nicely. On the last one, he gets into his lemongrass and alkaline water talk but there’s a lot more food bars on this album like where he mentions crabcakes, oysters and french bread. That was just something I noticed in the lyrics and enjoy a lot when I re-listen to them. Another great song about relationships on this album is No Phony Love which is probably my favorite track. It features one of the best beats on the album amazing vocal contributions from Charlie Wilson who was on the last King’s Disease. My biggest critiques of this album have to do with the sequencing as 40 Side does not really fit where it is placed. That’s the only song I didn’t like as the beat didn’t fit Nas that well. He sounded great over a trap beat on 27 Summers and maybe they tried to recreate that on this song and I didn’t love it. Nas can rap over beats like that but I didn’t like the song. I think the song EPMD 2 would’ve sounded better as a bonus track similar to Spicy from King’s Disease. The original track EPMD that Nas and Hit-Boy did for the Judas and Black Messiah soundtrack would’ve fit the album much better. The actually do recruit legendary rap group EPMD for part 2 which is a great moment but they sound a bit disjointed over such an amazing instrumental. Also featured on the song is Eminem who I’ve unfortunately become used to being disappointed by lately but he showed up to rap on this song. I loved the Christmas scheme where he raps “On the fuckin' freeway on the way here / Like Rudolph and his homies when they pullin' the sleigh, yeah / That's a lot of bucks flyin' when I'm makin' it rain, dear.” I loved the way he was flowing at the end of his verse. I wish he picked better beats like this Hit-Boy one and didn’t overthink his rhyming with corny bars like he did on that Side B album he did last year. Nas and Hit-Boy make such a great team on this album as Hit-Boy’s beats are pretty much ageless which allows for Nas to play around with flows and ideas for songs but still do what he does best. Hard-hitting beats like My Bible are a perfect example of how Nas has found a new level of focus and motivation from such great production. These beats are so good and bring the best out of one of the best to ever touch a microphone.
Fav Tracks: The Pressure, Rare, YKTV, Moments, No Phony Love, Brunch On Sundays

Up to you by pretty much and nct dream (HAECHANS PART HHHHH) - oooh are you a haechan stan 0v0 i like jaemin tho i admit my knowledge of dream is limited (my fren ults renjun heh) also yes yes consent is very important kids u.u dskjghkdfj YOU’RE RIGHT THO haechan is a singer he SINGS, i love the vocal harmonies !
Oasis by crush ft zico - those electric keyboard synths (?) amazing ! this song bops u.u
Moon by everglow - !!! i actually have heard this a lot before ^~^ i got so excited when i saw this bc it’s so good ! it’s definitely one of my fav everglow songs too i think i overplayed it a lot when it first came out *v*
Woowoo by dia - i love the ocean wave sounds ! that’s so cool i love how summery it is ! it kind of reminds me of loona too ! ggs are just >>> i love the fun and brighter pop songs so much 🥺
Secret garden by Oh My Girl - i’ve heard a few songs by omg ! and i really like a handful of them, secret garden kinda gives me early gfriend songs vibes too ! it’s so pretty ! i really love when songs utilize strings in their instrumentals too ! it’s a bit slower paced too which is really nice ^~^
Page by got7 - YEEEES okie actually maybe unpopular opinion but spinning top is one of my fav got7 albums ! i used to listen to the whole mini on repeat ! i actually used to ult got7 too for a few months heh ^^ BUT YEEES i love page ! got7 always have bangers love them so much
Nekkoya by produce 48 - AHHHHH ANOTHER SONG I LOVE !!! i’m actually a wizone haha :p so i’ve seen produce 48 ! tho admittedly it probably contributes to my burning h*tred for mn*t and any survival shows ;;;; but i loved the title song so much ! i used to unironically play it on repeat djghskfj
Puzzle moon by gwsn - AHHHH YOUR TASTE !!! i also followed gwsn from debut and puzzle moon is so so so cute ! it’s such a bop too ! they have such fun and catchy songs !
Goblin by sulli - ahhh the xylophone chimes ! they make the song sound a bit haunting before the piano comes in ;;;; it really reflects the mv story so well i think ;;; and sulli’s voice is so beautiful ;;;; it’s got that characteristic background vocal harmonies that sm artists usually do and it’s just really beautiful !
What are you up to by kang daniel - today on can you tell jess is unfortunately a bg stan daniel’s songs have been so good :,)) i stopped following all the wanna ones closely after a while but ! he always surprises me ! his songs are such vibes u.u

119 by nct dream - ah yes this is ncity brand u.u LOL they always have really filled chorus instrumentals and use a lot of vocals to fill up the space which i think is really cool and something i think immediately screams sm artist :0 ! i think renjun’s voice really sells this for me tho HIS VOICE IS AMAZING him and haechan yeees it’s a banger tho :,)
Save me save you by wjsn - i love wjsn’s music so much ! it sounds so magic and ethereal and totally bops ! their voices are so beautiful too and work together so well and i think this song’s style really suits all the members’ voices so well too !

Up by izone - MY GIRLS ! yes yes up is so cute ! i love it so much ! the choreo is so cute too ! i love izone please ;;;;
N/s by stray kids - oh boy okie ;;;; i’m like not a good judge of a lot of hip hop / more rap heavy songs ;;;; bc i was classically trained as a singer in choir ;-; so i’m sorry i do not have much to say about this one ;;;; it slaps tho ! i probably wouldn’t listen to it normally if you hadn’t recommended it tho so ! good to listen to smth outside of my normal preferences
Sunshine by straykids - OH very very different from the last skz song KJHGKFJHKD yea this is probably more my speed i’m so sorry LOL T-T it’s so good tho :o ! i don’t listen to a lot of skz bc i figured i wouldn’t be able to vibe with them but this one is so good i really like it ! skz and ateez man i’ve been trying to stan for ages but music is a big part of why i stan /stan/ certain groups more seriously and it’s also why i’m only honorary nctzen lol clearly i have been enlightened (literally *looks at my past ult groups* yeaaaa)

runner up is the emigration tunes by loreena mckennit, instrumental song, makes my soul feel at peace, also some of the most beautiful goddamn sounds i’ve ever heard a cello make
