Ice King (Adventure Time)
Dating the Ice King was... odd, to say the least. He was hard to be with at first. He was clingy. He was manic. He could be a little aggressive- not dangerous, just cranky- if you ended up ignoring him for too long; too long being subjective to his needs that day. He was unbelievably frustrating.
But at the same time... he was, strangely, the nicest guy you've ever dated. He'd get cranky, but once he saw you weren't leaving him he didn't push you. He was clingy, but it was because he was lonely. He was manic, but you knew it wasn't his fault. He brought you gifts ranging from flowers to gems to even making ice sculptures in your likeness. It was flattering.
He had made a little ice elevator to get you into the castle easier, when you visited. And by Glob he was always delighted to see you. Every time he heard the elevator chugging its' way up the mountain, you could hear him.
"Gunther they're coming- is there anything in my beard?" he'd ask, followed by a little "wenk". You'd come up just in time to see the little penguin pecking something out of his master's beard. Then Gunther would waddle over to you, making Ice King screech in surprise and try to rub whatever food was in his beard out. You bit back a snort as you picked up your favorite little guy.
"You look fine, IK, calm down," you laughed. He grumbled, flustered and fixing his crown. You grinned as you set the penguin down. You gave him a hug in greeting, and as always he was a little tense before returning it tightly.
"So, what'd you wanna show me?" He had asked you to come over cause he found something "wicked sweet". That seemed to click the lightbulb on.
"Oh yeah! C'mon, sweet thang," he laughed as he yoinked you up like you weight nothing. You yelled in surprise, holding onto him as he flew through the castle. You couldn't help but laugh as well, enjoying the short flight.
"This is my "the past" room- you are the ONLY person aside from Gunther I've let in here," he explained as he set you down. You looked around at all the old stuff in awe, recognizing a lot of it immediately from your time period. You heard him fiddle with some things as you picked through the items.
The old suit jacket he'd give you to wear when you were cold- which you immediately put on as per usual. Some old books- a few of which were written by a Simon.... Petrikov. That sounded familiar...
Then it clicked. You used to live just down the street from him. You used to attend the same book club together, before he stopped coming due to his research. You remember him showing off a book he had gotten published to the group before he stopped joining as often. You'd make him food and check in on him, when Betty couldn't.
"Where is that damn thing?" you heard Ice King mutter. You looked at the jacket you were wearing, turning the book over. A picture of Simon, wearing the exact same jacket.
While your boyfriend was busy, you sifted through the junk pile. Newspaper clippings covered in mad scrawling that spelled out pleas for help and forgiveness. Multiple pictures of Simon and letters written by him to various people. A picture of a young, but now familiar, girl with writing on the back. You stared at another newspaper clipping, a ball of ice in your stomach unrelated to the cold of the ice kingdom. Simon stood next to a sickeningly familiar crown that sat upon a cushion, smiling as wide as can be at his discovery.
A familiar jingle jolted you out of your thoughts and you dropped the article. You whipped around to see Ice King standing next to a cracked tv that was now playing Cheers. He waved his hands in a "tada" motion.
"I got a bunch of old junk from WAAAAY back in the day, so I thought you'd like a little marathon! I can go make popcorn," he offered with a grin. Your mouth hung open as your eyes darted from him to the old tv show. You tried to speak, but all that came out was a soft sobbing noise as realization set in. Immediately, his face fell.
"Oh- What, do you not like this show? I can, uh... I'm sure I got something-!" You cut him off by nearly tackling him in a hug. You held him so tight, knuckles turning white as you gripped the fabric of his robe. Your knees felt weak, giving out and making him drop to the floor with you.
"M... Man, if I knew you liked the show this much, I'd have done this sooner," he tried to joke, not really understanding why you were crying. Thankfully, he just held you and scooted around so you both could see the tv. Not that you really watched it, being too busy reeling from your newfound knowledge.
Gunther, sweet as can be, brought in popcorn and plopped his little self in your lap. You could use the extra comfort. You felt Ice King's hand run up and down your back, and new he was taking glances at you to see if you were alright. For his sake, you pretended to watch the show and forced down some popcorn. He seemed to relax a little, thinking you were fine. You were anything but. However...
What could you even do?

I woke up with a realization. One reason I struggle to write longer works is impatience. I don't want to write, I want to have written something. So the secret is learning to enjoy the journey instead of always rushing toward the destination.
For context, I just watched a Youtube video about training yourself to read longer works by learning contentment--enjoy living in the world of the book instead of rushing through a reading list, because constantly watching how many pages you have until the end makes it more stressful so you're likely to abandon it halfway. I'm guilty of reading lots of short books because there are too many books I want to read for me to have patience for longer books.
This morning it hit me that I have the same problem with writing. I can't sink in to longer works because when I start one, I stress out about how long it takes to finish one scene, so imagine how long it'll take to finish the whole thing, and it's much easier to write only short works. But if I learn to luxuriate in the writing process and don't worry about reaching the ending, I'll enjoy writing a lot more and I'll be more likely to eventually finish.

I just have to say I LOVE the Instant Synchronised Murder Faces that Fai and Kurogane are whipping out any time anything even slightly unusual happens. It’s EXTREMELY warranted for where they are, and also just slightly hilarious whenever it’s like… a door opening.
BUT INSTANT SYNCHRONISED MURDER FACES I SHALL HAVE!
I suppose you could say the giant doors they had to open in Koryo were the tiniest bit foreshadowing this moment. Oh it’s even the same battle party too! Sakura didn’t come with them that time either, so it was just the four of them storming a giant forbidding castle controlled by an evil wizard who was watching them magically from a distance.
If there is acid anywhere inside the ruinsI’m allowed to start yelling.
Oh! Also! In Koryo the inside corridor of the castle had a repeating hallway - kind of like a time loop, but a far simpler one. And when they visited the Memory version of the Clow Ruins in Recourt the hallways also randomly changed in size and shape, as if time and space were unstable - which is far more relevant now than it ever was before.
I can't believe they've done this.

Listen, I've done higher ed and let me tell you, academia is full of nothing but constant criticism and challenges - and not all in good faith
I mean, you have to defend a thesis during your PhD and youre not defending because everyone only has compliments for you - and given Simon's subject of study? I bet his thesis defense was rough
So to me, I find it perfectly in character that Simon finally starts turning his life around when he gets the first bit of constructive criticism. (actual good faith criticism thats not "you were better before")
I feel like a lot of Simon's Ooo life (again 12 years!!! thats half of some of your lives to put in perspective) - all that time was because no one could give Simon the guidance he desperately needed. Finn with his "vault" never faces his grief. And Marceline who could've - Simon never talks to.
Remember when Marcy got a wake up call about how dumb she's acting when Glass Boy started singing about his princess - And Marcy realizes (no spoonfeeding necessary!) that she sounds so immature for pulling that on PB
Simon needed something like that. He's the kind of guy who would see a criticism in good faith and apply it where sensible. I don't think it's out of character for him to use that as a way to move forward - because for once people are telling him how!
here's a hard lesson I learned recently: pointing out where you did something wrong is not automatically you being blamed for that wrong thing happening - i think the key difference is when people blame you, they want you to feel bad - its a punishment, but when theyre pointing it out to help you, then they want you to feel better
and theres really no avoiding making mistakes - sometimes its the only way someone can learn
It's been more than a decade for Simon, we are past "I'm sorry for your loss", we are past giving him space, this man needed an intervention and you know what! interventions are rough! sometimes the greatest kindness that can be done is not letting people be comfortae in their own sorrow! which means helping them will be uncomfortable!! maybe even for all parties involved

Could I get something for Ice King with a reader that asks him out first please? Like they see him and want that old man carnally so they shoot their shot. Just someone going outta their way to hit on him instead of the other way around for once
Headcanons or a drabble is fine, he gets love either way :)
Ok I'm gonna alter this ask a LIL to fit with the "how you met" headcanons I posted.
Ice King (Adventure Time)
You've become very familiar with the Ice King over your time here in Ooo. He's brash. A bit crude. Kind of a wad. But he's also weirdly... nice. Every time you've rescued a princess from him, they're never harmed. Scared? Yeah, because of being captured. But they're taken care of. You even got to experience things firsthand when you'd get captured with Bubblegum- or even just on your own.
You had started becoming the target of his "affections" lately, which included him grabbing you out of nowhere and flying off. It wasn't really the worst thing, honestly. He was actually a good cook, for the most part. The penguins were cute. He was just... nice to be around. You actually found yourself looking forward to it.
But... you felt bad pretending not to like the attention. You guessed you feared what the others would think- both for him being old and him being... like That. You wanted to change things up. You had to tell Finn and Jake where you were going, because they'd think the worst otherwise, and they were horrified. You stopped caring about what they thought.
It took you a while to travel to the Ice Kingdom, as well as actually get into the palace. It wasn't exactly made for non-flying creatures. You were cold, tired, and angry because the food you had brought was now splattered to the ground.
"Who DARES enter th- oh." Ice King stood there, stunned to see you in his living room. You panted, leaning on your sword for support. You HAD a plan for this, but you were so exhausted and cranky it was all out the window. You pointed your sword at him.
"I didn't do it this time," he yelled, throwing his hands up. You swallowed the lump of adrenaline in your throat.
"You. Me. Dinner. Wear a nice robe." His hands lowered, confused. He floundered for a second, stammering.
"Are.... you asking me on a date?" You nodded as you sheathed your sword.
"Yeah, and I'm using your shower because I am NOT climbing back down that mountain." You walked past the stunned king, who just watched you go for the bathroom. You heard him squeal as you shut the door.
"GUNTHER GET ME MY GOOD PANTS!!!!! I GOT A DATE TONIGHT!!!!!"
