Naruto clocks Gaara the moment she sees him.

She keeps her smile wide and stance easy, putting her hands on her hips and squinting at the Sand kids. Neither of those names garner any reaction, but they wouldn’t. Sasuke’s status as Uchiha is obvious at first look and Sakura comes from a civilian family.

“Hi,” Kankuro says shortly.

Gaara says nothing at all, looking at them with those wide, empty eyes.

Naruto knows better than to go to her father with anything important and if she tells her mother then she’ll try and pull her from the chunin exams, which is the last thing any of them needs.

This place is so depressing. She gets why her mom wants to put in some wallpaper or something so badly, but Kushina is still mad at Kakashi for weaseling out of their engagement, so she just grumbles and complains but won’t do anything about it.

“You’re proctoring the second part of the exam,” she says. The format of the exam is supposed to be secret, but it’s not like that’s ever stopped her from breaking into her father’s office. “I need you to rig the fight.”

He raises his eyebrow. Or maybe he’s raising both of them, but she can’t see under the headband. “That’s cheating.”

“Cheating’s allowed,” she counters. “I need you to make sure I face Gaara.”

He blinks slowly. Or winks. “Your father will kill me.”

“It’s supposed to be random,” she says. “How will he know?”

His silence takes on a decidedly guilty air.

“He told you to make sure I didn’t face him,” she guesses, not bothering to keep the bitterness out of her voice.

“He’s worried about you,” Kakashi says.

Too little too late as far as she’s concerned. As if his worry has ever done her any good. As if his worry has ever done anything but get in her way, just like it is right now. “Fine. Make sure he faces Sasuke then.”

“There are easier ways to get out of an engagement,” he says. “You don’t need to arrange to have him killed.”

Her eyes narrow and it takes everything in her not to growl. Growling is one of those things she’s not allowed to do because it’s too much of a tell. “I suppose you’re the expert on that.”

Kakashi doesn’t say anything. He’s spent her whole life not saying anything and it never gets less infuriating.

“Just do it,” she says. “What do you care anyway?”

Naruto is halfway out his window when he says, “I care,” and he can’t see her so she doesn’t bother to hold back her eyeroll.

That’s never done her any good either.

okay, I’m not a gatekeeper. I swear I’m not. But I genuinely cannot help but be irked when I see a hinata fan latch themselves onto characters like Neji or Sasuke. Pretending like they ~totally~ understand their characters while also horribly misrepresenting them and characterizing them like they’re from a fanfiction. Talking about how noo sasuke would love hinata if he really got to know her! He’s just so cold and unfeeling that a character like hinata could really bring out a nice side to him!1!1!1 Neji is a victim of this too but in a slightly lesser degree as most hinata fans don’t bother to ship them openly as they’re related. But that won’t stop them from characterizing Neji as someone completely and utterly obsessed with hinata to the point he grovels at her feet and is possessive of her like a “big brother.” Because if hinata called him her big brother when he died then that totally makes them siblings! Who cares if neji considers himself that! Hinata said so1!11!1!

Well, I don't see an issue with liking a character by itself and proclaiming yourself a fan of the rest (I'm a big fan of Ino Yamanaka and Sasuke Uchiha, two characters that stand in opposite corners thematically), yet this can be sustained as long as we respect their canonical characterizations and understand that not everything about a character is "good" or has to be justified. As for the core of your complaint, I agree, as many of these arguments are sustained on the premise of giving Hinata more relevance (romantically or politically); something that she canonically does not possess and that neither of the two previously mentioned male characters are interested in giving her.

Hinata's sole purpose as a character was based on being Neji's polar opposite during his arc (the Chünin exams are relevant to Neji, not Hinata, who is a supporting character to him) and being Naruto's admirer on certain occasions. That's it, at no point was she even mentioned or observed by Sasuke, and any narrative weight she might have carried disappeared when Neji himself was no longer necessary for Naruto's growth.

Neji's problem isn't just with Hinata (I'm surprised to have to clarify something specifically mentioned in the manga and anime), but with the entire main Hyüga family; which is why his arc doesn't close until Hiashi (not Hinata), apologizes.

As for Sasuke, I wouldn't spend any more time thinking about it since the sole reason for his involvement lies in a desire for romantic reciprocity from the most attractive and powerful character in the manga (at the thought of an offspring with both Byakugan and Sharingan, despite the fact that the Sharingan is infinitely superior to the Byakugan). If with Neji's arc, Hinata possessed almost zero thematic relevance, with Sasuke - with whom she not only never interacts but in his eyes, she's part of the caste he seeks to eradicate, then her incidence is extremely nil.

I've never written a post about SasuHina/HinaSasu, and in part, I refuse because their canonical possibility really is nil, so there's nothing more to analyze than headcanons and fanfictions that have their own rules, which have little to do with Kishimoto's material.

Perhaps in the future, I'll dedicate a post to that pairing discussing some of its more famous theories; like how Hinata, being a character considered by the fandom as "sensitive", could understand and help Sasuke despite the fact that she was never seen comforting or trying to understand any character other than Naruto; going as far as to dismiss her cousin's emotions in order to put herself as a victim of the system on the same level as her cousin, whom her father enslaved.

Hinata being shy is not the same as her being "good" or "sensitive", Sakura used to be shy during her childhood and was bullied for it, yet Hinata stans don't usually consider Sakura to be a good person...

I'm pretty sure the majority of that petty animosity between the two fandoms is derived from the equally petty Sakura vs Hinata nonsense. It seeped into the ships, and unfortunately, many fans of one who had no problems with the other, eventually grew to dislike the other ship simply because of the behaviour of their fans. I always try to tell people that the behaviour of the fans has nothing to do with the ship itself, but some people just can't separate the two.

Sakura is an overly violent tsundere? Madara purposefully caused the disenfranchisement of the Uchiha clan in the Leaf Village by having Obito increase suspicion towards them just because they didn’t want him to lead them after he abandoned them on the battlefield against the Senju.

I mean, Madara is basically everything people claim Sakura is, but in addition to that is a douche of villain who only got as far as he did thanks to plot armor. The Reanimation Jutsu being undone should have been his undoing or at least a minor setback when he needed to be resurrected again but he somehow immediately knew how the jutsu worked better than the people who made and perfected it respectively. He also gets the ability to absorb chakra without the Rinnegan despite it repeatedly being stated to be a Rinnegan ability.

At least everything Sakura accomplishes, she does under her own power and with the guidance of teachers she managed to impress and there’s an in-universe justification to everything she can do. Madara is constantly getting outshined in the villain department by far more interesting villains than he is, mainly Kabuto and Obito. The only thing he has is power level. He’s the Majin Buu of Naruto.

Do you think sarada was a test tube baby or was her conception just shady? Sasuke and especially Sakura's behaviour make them look so weirdly guilty

There is no answer to that I believe?

I think Kishimoto used Gaiden as a last attempt stab at ‘Boruto’ with more questions than they can answer that they’re now trying to “fix”.. hence the shitload of marketing attempts. 

I think she is the result of “things not always going as planned” during that time skip without Naruto. 

What fueled Sasuke during the time skip anyway? Who wasn't there?

I noticed something else about Sasuke.

Sarada screams the word “papa” idk how many times, but Sasuke has only referred to her as ‘his child’ once at Orochimaru’s hideout. Any other time he includes Chocho and says “the kids.” 

Same with Sakura. He never refers to Sakura or uses her name, (or show concern when she gets taken away by the enemy for that matter.. although neither does Naruto)- however he calls her his “wife”, right? I dunno about you, but I noticed he did this twice.. and ONLY to Orochimaru and ONLY when necessary. Think about that one, because I’m telling you that’s deliberate. Why wouldn’t he use their names around him specifically and why did Kishimoto choose to let Sakura and Sarada spout “papa” and “husband” over and over again while Sasuke avoids it? Food for thought.   

Sarada questions about the relationship between her parents are never answered despite the “happy ending”. (Not fully anyway.)

The story will do everything in its power to raise suspicion and make you believe that Sarada might be one of those ‘Uchiha Shin’ clone children or perhaps a clone related to Sasuke with his genes made by Orochimaru in a ‘this is WAY too obvious, so of course in the end she wouldn’t be’-manner. Which is interesting, because in that so-called “happy ending” too many details are left unsolved.

Whatever you suspect, in the end it was all a misunderstanding.

So.. case closed. We went full circle, all is good. 

Except, I’m still not convinced completely. 

And Kishimoto is very careful in that regard. For example when Naruto talks to Sarada he makes sure to mention Sarada’s connection to “her mother and her father”, but not mention anything about the connection between Sasuke and Sakura. When he starts to console Sarada he speaks very highly of Sasuke, but he never mentioned Sakura.. at all. (Good qualities.)

Then we have Shizune. 

We know there is nothing about Sarada’s birth documented in the hospitals of Konoha. Which is strange, because even if Sarada was born in Orochimaru’s hideout, you’d think Sakura, our great medic ninja, would’ve made sure she would be AT LEAST properly identified/documented in Konoha as Karin for sure has that.. alongside the umbilical cord for some reason. Even worse.. Shizune has no counterargument and looks distraught. Is “you were born outside of the village” such a secret? Is there literally nothing Shizune could’ve said?

Then we have the big question: “what was Sasuke going to say?”

Sakura arrives during the battle with ‘Uchiha Shin’ and Sasuke’s first reaction to that is: “What are you doing here?” To which she apologizes to Sarada “I meant to tell you properly”. 

I think because leaving the village to find her dad because Sakura refused to tell her anything is dangerous and with that I’m guessing Kishimoto refers to some of the questions Sarada launched at Sasuke when she met him: 

“Why won’t you be with mom?”

“Do you think it’s okay to forget the face of your child?” (Why won’t you be with me?/us?)

“Who is the girl with the glasses?” (Karin) 

+ Mom won’t say anything, I don’t believe your relationship, you’re never around and yes, we have a lot of problems.  

But Sasuke says Sakura doesn’t have to apologize, because no matter what “it’s his fault” as if Sarada was some sort of mistake. Sakura staying silent for so long/lying causing Sarada despair, is her fault since Sasuke… wasn’t around lol. So.. I’m thinking, just the fact that Sarada exists at all he believes “is his fault”. He agreed to something (Sakura ever-too-willing) and looks regretful since “no matter how we look at it”, he abandoned the aftermath of that decision up until that point.

But why? He isn’t connected to Sakura directly, because Sarada is in between, “because we have you.. Sarada.”

Since ‘Boruto’ had to happen anyway, why did Kishimoto choose to go this route for Sasuke’s future in Gaiden? He obviously went back to the War Arc.. so.. I did too. 

So.. let’s take a look a Naruto’s reaction: 

This is a “simple memory” of him thinking about Sasuke explaining his hypothesis about these Uchiha Shin clones and how it could connect to the white Zetsu being a byproduct of Madara using Hashirama’s flesh for that statue (to create that army) if I’m not mistaken. Uchiha Shin daddy ended up being Orochimaru’s old experiment. (Interestingly, Sakura brought him up before he did.. in her mind clone = Orochimaru.. also food for thought, but it could be because of Mitsuki, don’t know.) 

But anyway, look at Naruto’s expression. Here he looks at a crying Sarada after she’s been told “this has nothing to do with you” by Sasuke in response to all the questions she shot at him. Which part of this is making him look so sullen?  

Naruto has shown zero concern for Sakura or the “connection” between Sasuke and Sakura throughout Gaiden even when it was implied that Karin is possibly Sarada’s mom. The concern is seeing Sarada being in pain because of it/being lied to. 

.. and left out. 

Because indeed, the mission has nothing to do with Sarada as it is “top-secret”.

Am I the only one who’s not feeling that one from Sasuke?

“You stay in the village and protect it, Hokage..” “You deal with the things you have to do. And I’ll do what I have to do. Isn’t this the ‘cooperation’ that you wanted?"

Is it, Naruto? I highly doubt it. (Indicating that something isn't right here + Sakura's eyes.)

If you’d ask Kishimoto if Sarada truly is 100% a human child his answer would be: “Yea, sure :)” 

You will get a straight up answer, enough to get the shippers gloating on socials with “proof”, but it’s as convincing as Sakura saying “..I’m sure our feelings are mutual…” 

Regardless.. why does Sasuke feel like Sarada’s existence is his “fault”? 

If you go back to the War Arc (as Kishimoto did too) Sasuke observes the conversation between Madara and Hashirama who talk about leaving the future to the next generation and “Madara’s dream coming to an end”. Both Naruto and Sasuke were willing to give up their goals for each other. Goals that ARE NOT JUST THEIR OWN. As Sasuke had said, “it’s especially true when it comes to bigger things.” Also meaning that.. even though Naruto said he was going to be a “Ninja in his own way” instead of just becoming Konoha’s “tool”, whatever future he had planned for Kohona.. if he even had one, he was willing to give that up too. 

Think about it. 

For whatever generations after them, whatever “bright future” they had planned, it was never more important than each other. If Naruto wanted a better life for all the children of Konoha and was determined to make that happen, then not even that was more important than Sasuke.

Naruto’s goal to become ‘Hokage’ and wanting the Shinobi’s to work together theory-wise was kind of vague, but he wanted to do it with Sasuke if they were going to be alive anyway.

And these dumbasses who love each other so much were reduced to these miserable looking fellas and I just think Kishimoto took the opportunity to make use of that as much as possible. Mocking the situation as obvious as he could without straight up saying it like only he can. 

“Sasuke and Sakura have a child? Lol, I’ll make the reader as suspicious as possible without actually truly revealing anything.. as always hihi.” 

Bastard.

“And then in ‘Boruto’ they can try and clean up my mess, but the damage is already kind of done, no?” 

I love him.

In the famous words of Uchiha, Madara: 

“Then it might have been impossible from me from the start. I hated having someone follow me from behind.”

But in the end Naruto and Sasuke are equals. Only Naruto can understand Sasuke on an emotional level and vice versa. Only they can balance each other out, everyone else..

Perhaps.. Sasuke saying

"A bright future is always better...

.. don't you think?"

In that almost sarcastic way.. was about Sarada (being a parent/family with Sakura) which only Naruto and Sakura understood and not so much about the mission, because that pause right there? Is not convincing and if Sasuke was truly speaking to better a future for the Shinobi world he would be much more determined.

But no one looks happy even though Sarada has her happy ending so leaving those questions open I think is just deliberate mockery.

If, Perhaps, They Were Less Idiotic, Things Would Go Smoothly

Madara was, admittedly, too disoriented to have bothered checking the remains of whatever ritual the students decided to set off in the middle of breakfast. He’s tired, cranky, and near blind from the explosion. Not an actual explosion, thank the Sage, but a sudden relocation of all of the light, natural or otherwise, to one point. Jarring, to say the least. Anyway, rituals and sketched seals aren’t his area of expertise, fire is. That’s Mito’s area. And Tobirama, but that’s more of a hobby for the water elementalist than anything else.

So, instead of checking the ritual or for injuries, like Itama and Tsunade immediately went to do, he headed for the prime suspects. Namely, Uzumaki-Namikaze Naruto and his squad of annoyances. They even drag the upper years into their messes, sometimes, but Kakashi generally has more impulse control and can hold all of his idiot friends back. Namely, Uchiha Obito. His own nephew, who gets himself in more trouble than Madara ever knows what to do with. Almost as bad as Minato and Kushina’s spawn.

He never gets all of the co-conspirators from the main suspects (Naruto, Uchiha Sasuke, and Haruno Sakura, because it’s always those three, isn’t it) but that’s hardly surprising. The trio is admirably tight-lipped and loyal, Sasuke more out of general stubbornness than anything, but the end result remains the same. The three get detention (under Hidan, the sadistic bastard, because he and Kakuzu are pretty much the only teachers immune to Naruto’s natural charm) and Madara gets a drink. The next day everything is fine and the trio are suitably traumatized.

Well, except for one thing. Something is off with Tobirama.

At first, Madara doesn’t think anything of it. The Senju have always been a little odd and Tobirama is no exception to that rule. Hashirama is bipolar, Tsunade violent, Kawarama... weird, Itama downright terrifying, and Tobirama closed off, distant, with no rhyme or reason attached to his actions. That’s how it’s always been. This, though, is a different kind of weird. After he first notices (a flinch away from contact, not usually odd, but this time it was away from Kawarama and Tobirama has never been shy with contact when it involved his brothers, particularly the younger ones), he doesn’t stop. He can see Itama and Tsunade are clued in on something, their eyes tracking Tobirama whenever he’s in the same room as them but the albino astutely avoids the pair of healers. Mito too, if her narrow-eyed glances and heated, whispered arguments with the healers or Tobirama himself are anything to go off of.

An injury, he thinks, but that can’t be right. Nothing in his movements belay any sort of injury and Tobirama has never been shy about healing, regardless. It must be something else.

(He keeps going back to the idea of an injury time and time again as Tobirama seems to almost wane over the next several days, even if he’s cast it aside.

He realizes, with a start, that he’s doesn’t like the idea of Tobirama injured and not seeking help.

He buries the emotion as soon as it surfaces, resolutely ignoring it.)

Madara doesn’t hate paperwork. He really doesn’t. It’s tiring, but he doesn’t hate it. No, he hates how much he gets or, as in this situation, the absolutely horrid conditions he has to work it. The conditions being, of course, Tobirama’s presence. Normally, it wouldn’t be a problem. Then again, Tobirama isn’t quite acting normally, is he? No, no he’s not. So Madara is stuck doing paperwork with Tobirama, trying to simultaneously ignore the albino and scan him for any sign of injuries or curses or seals.

That also leads to lingers looks at pale skin or vibrantly red tattoos or soft snow-white hair that Madara would love to run his fingers through- he tears his eyes away, glaring down at the field trip form in his hands. It’s Uzumaki Karin’s, for Hashirama’s annual trip to the relatively nearby ruins, preserved and owned by the school. The Mountain Graveyard, they call it. It’s chalk full of magic and the resident Zetsu(s) hang out there. A dangerous place, if the students don’t follow the strictly enforced rules. Karin is less of a troublemaker than her year mates, so long as Hozuki Suigetsu doesn’t antagonize her into doing anything stupid. He signs off on the form and moves it aside. In a separate pile, since the field trip is coming up rather quickly and he doesn’t want to have to deal with Hashirama’s panicked searching like last year. His eyes move up to Tobirama again, unbidden. The man is frowning down at what looks to be their finances, his mouth moving to silent words. Madara watches for a beat too long and pulls his eyes determinedly back to his own work. A parent complaining, as always. Honestly, if parents don’t agree with their teaching methods then they should pull their kids out. No one is going to kick Hidan out for being a third-tier vampire despite the complaints against it and like hell would Minato put up with it anyway.

The blonde is almost annoyingly kind but that means nothing when you draw his ire. A true force to be reckoned with, that one. Especially with those annoying spells he and Tobirama are always working together on. And Orochimaru, when the mood strikes their resident snake expert (but seriously, that level of adoration for snakes is not natural). Tobirama meets his eyes when he looks up again. He grimaces, ignoring the way his face flushes, but doesn’t back down.

"You’ve been staring," Tobirama offers up, his (beautiful, vibrant red) eyes narrowing further. Madara leans forwards slightly, letting his head rest on his hand.

"If you offered a picture, perhaps I could stare at that instead," he returns, never one to let a chance slip him by. The albino disregards the comment without more than a slight bristling, like usual. Honestly, the Senju is very incredibly oblivious. It seems to run in the family. Kawarama hadn’t noticed Hikaku’s flirting for a week and Hashirama hadn’t noticed Mito’s for a year and a half. Hashirama still misses rather obvious hints and clues from Mito (who is now, somehow, his wife, he doesn’t understand why she would lower her standards so far).

"I’m afraid I have no such photos in my possession," Tobirama says dryly. "Nor do any of my brothers, I can assure you." ...Madara wonders just how many threatening words and actions it took for a Tobirama to get any and all pictures of himself from his family and destroy them. He’s tempted to say a lot but, beyond Itama, Tobirama has been voted as the most terrifying staff in employment by both parents and students. Hidan and Kakuzu may both be creepy and Tsunade may be terrifying in her own right but all three have a lot to learn.

"Well?" Tobirama prompts after a moment. Madara hums, shrugging.

"You seem... off," he says truthfully. You can’t lie to Tobirama, after all, and redirection is nigh impossible. The only ones able to do it are Itama and Touka, as far as he can tell, and that’s only through intense embarrassment. Mito, sometimes, through sheer stubbornness.

"Off?" Tobirama arches an elegant white brow, clearly unimpressed.

"Yeah. Ever since the idiot trio’s most recent back-firing experiment, actually." Oh and there Tobirama tenses. Something is wrong, then, it’s not just his imagination. Tobirama turns his attention back to his paperwork.

"Don’t be a fool, Uchiha, no matter what comes naturally to you. I am unharmed." Madara stares at Tobirama for a moment longer, wondering if he should take offense. He decides not to because it’s probably what Tobirama wants. A genius plan to- wait. Oh. Madara stifles a smirk, pushing himself fluidly to his feet. Tobirama twitches but doesn’t look up, working determinedly on whatever he’s decided is more important than his own welfare. Madara walks around the table, stopping next to Tobirama.

"Say, Senju," he purrs, putting a hand over the paper Tobirama is staring at. "I don’t believe I mentioned injuries or harm in any way." Which side has Tobirama been favoring?

"You implied it," Tobirama retorts coldly, turning to glare up at him. Madara moves so he can bracket the albino, rather than merely looming. Which side had Kawarama brushed against?

"I gave a timeline but I didn’t imply anything," he corrects. "You inferred it." Tobirama stands. His chair clatters to the ground, skidding out of Madara’s circled arms. He pays it no mind. Ah, yes. It had been Tobirama’s right.

"What do you want, Madara?" It comes out as a growl. Madara grins, stepping closer so that Tobirama’s back is touching the table and his front is pressed against Madara. We can’t be having the Senju escape after all, can we? He leans closer yet to whisper in Tobirama’s ear.

"I want you... to take care of yourself." And with that, Madara presses one hand into Tobirama’s right side. The albino hisses in pain, almost crumpling in Madara’s arms. Madara steps away from the table with a frown, taking Tobirama with him. There’s no way the man will let Madara take him to Tsunade or Itama and even in pain, Tobirama’s control over water is a bitch and a half to deal with.

"Bastard," Tobirama snarls. It would be scarier if the Senju wasn't half keeled over in Madara’s arms. Madara gives him an unimpressed look and carefully leads Tobirama over to the staff room couch. He pushes the Senju into it, kneeling in front of him. He lifts Tobirama’s shirt without a word, scanning the man’s right side. It’s not pretty- a patchwork of bruises and nasty black marks. He feels over it gently with his meager diagnostic magic, on hand on Tobirama’s other side to stop the man from instinctively flinching away. A broken rib too, it seems like.

"Why hasn’t Itama healed you?" He demands, glaring up at Tobirama.

"The magic that caused the injury rejects any interference. I simply have to let it heal on it’s own," Tobirama grumbles, apparently realizing that Madara isn’t just going to let the matter rest.

"Why are you working, then? Minato would give you payed off time, if it’s a problem with money." Tobirama stares at him like he’s an idiot. Madara glares back, because everything he just said makes sense. Rest is a necessary component of healing and, by the sage, if Tobirama refuses to take care of himself, Madara will force him.

"What do you expect? For me to just laze around doing nothing?"

"Yes? That’s generally what people do when they get a rib broken. You’re going to mess up the healing process! The fact that you haven’t done so already is luck, pure and simple,” Madara snaps. Tobirama rears back, like he’s surprised that Madara’s worried. He really hopes that’s just his overactive imagination and not an actual worry. He might be... grumpy, but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t like Tobirama (just the opposite, in fact, and if the other man thinks Madara dislikes or, Sage, hates him, he’s not sure what he’ll do).

"I will not be useless-" Madara snarls, cutting Tobirama off harshly.

"For fuck’s sake, Senju! Being injured and not taking care of yourself properly will lead to you being a burden more than if you took a few weeks to fix yourself." They fall into an uncomfortable, tense silence when Madara finishes. There’s so much more he’d like to say (yell at Tobirama for thinking like that, demand the names of those that made him think he needed to be useful, assure Tobirama that he’s the most important person in this school and likely the only reason it runs in any sort of workable fashion), but now isn’t the time. Tobirama hardly trusts him and wouldn’t believe anything that comes out of his mouth that isn’t an insult in some way. He sighs, leaning back to sit on his haunches. This conversation would be more comfortable if he wasn’t on the floor in front of Tobirama but he’ll make do.

"Is there anything we can do to remove the magical infection?" He asks after a moment. Tobirama looks at him long and hard, trying to discern his purpose. Or so Madara would guess. Even after all this time, the Senju is a mystery. Probably part of the reason Madara is so enamored.

"A few," Tobirama finally says, his eyes never leaving Madara’s (and isn’t that odd, when the Uchiha are so well known for the magics they can channel and use through their eyes?). "Many are too dangerous to attempt or too..." He trails off, clearly searching for a word. "Intimate," Tobirama finishes with a helpless shrug. Madara arches a brow.

"Too intimate?" He prods. Tobirama’s lips twist into a grimace and he looks away with a hum.

"If I were to have my magic completely flushed, or switched out by another’s, the invading magic would be forced to dissipate due to losing anything to ground itself with. It would work but..."

"But it would result in a magical bond," Madara finished for him. He swipes a hands over his face, pinching the bridge of his nose. He should just force the Senju into bed rest to heal the normal way but with a magical infection like this, it’s possible that the injuries won’t ever heal. The most logical thing to do would be to flush out Tobirama’s system. That’s a level of intimacy far past anything the Senju has partook in, far past anything even Madara has done.

"Of course. The one lauded as unfeeling, regardless of evidence to the opposite, is the one stuck in this situation," Madara grumbles. "I don’t suppose you have anyone you wouldn’t mind being bonded to?" The question is rhetorical, verging on sarcastic, but Tobirama responds seriously anyway.

"I... do. But I am unsure if he feels the same way or whether he is simply like this around everyone and I have horribly misread him," Tobirama confesses, voice tight as he studiously avoids Madara’s eyes. Well, that was certainly unexpected. He wonders who it is. Madara resolutely pushes down the pang of hurt the echoes through his magic itself. Why should he care that Tobirama likes someone?

"Well, I suppose the first step would be asking them." Madara bites down on the near instinctive addition that he wouldn’t mind being bonded to Tobirama. In fact, he would love it. The Senju, though, clearly doesn’t feel the same way. Tobirama stares at Madara again, frowning. The he sighs and gets to his feet. Madara scrambles to his feet as well, steadying the Senju when it looks like he’ll stumble.

"And here it’s my family that is said to be oblivious," Tobirama says dryly. "Now move. We’ve wasted enough time and the paperwork certainly isn’t going to do itself." Madara doesn’t move and that earns him a glare but now it’s personal, damnit.

"What did you mean by that?" He challenges. Tobirama rolls his eyes and, with the speed he’s infamous for, drags Madara into a short, slightly awkward, but very much amazing kiss. Oh.

"Oh," he articulates dumbly. Tobirama hums again. "You like me?"

"Clearly." That was dry enough to give Suna a run for it’s money, dear lord.

"Then... you wouldn’t mind me helping with your, ah... infection?" Suffice to say, the answer is a resounding 'yes'.

(They get on stopping the magic infection right away because it's a very dangerous situation that shouldn't be allowed to continue any longer. It’s definitely not because they, realizing how stupid they’ve been, decided to emulate horny teenagers. The bonding and flushing and everything was definitely at the front of their minds. The entire time. It was the entire reason.

Fuck off Izuna, you’re just as bad!)

Thank you for recommendations. I never read monstercake's dj before and it's really great! I feel like that is the only dj where their characters seem canon. I usually don't like neither SN djs nor NS djs. You have already talked about problems in SN djs (usually just porn without plot and ooc SNS) but with NS, despite having some plot, I just can't see them as The Naruto and Sasuke. Sasuke is often this depressed insecure person that needs reassuring from Naruto and his constant support, Naruto's only role is caring about Sasuke. The first step in their relationship is usually made only by Naruto and Sasuke doesn't even seem interested sometimes. I just want to read sth where they both invest in their relationship equally, where they support each other equally, where they care about each other equally.

Ahhh!!! I get it. That's my WHOLE problem too basically.

All those NS djs I listed had amazing plots. I have nothing but admiration for those doujinkas and I wish they should reach greater heights in their real life. After I got to know that KSL came back online after 8 years (that too on twitter), I created a twitter account last week just to reblog her Naruto art🤩 cuz I can't stop my Fangirlism. And I even created an account in pixiv to follow Emi/10 Rankai... Unfortunately Nilo's account had nothing. Such Wonderful artists they all are!!!

When I look at their stories by removing Canon glasses... They are all wonderful.

However, If I wear the Canon Glasses, I realized... Most of them has the same portrayals of NS... That is, Sasuke needs reassurance and constant support from Naruto... And Naruto was the care giver. 

It actually looks extremely one-sided and that's not The Naruto and Sasuke I observed from Canon. Sasuke also equally cares about Naruto, Obsessed about him and Protects him... Basically He is the initiator of that bond. Though Sasuke does everything differently, in his own way.

If Naruto looks at the Shooting Star and pray for Sasuke... Then Sasuke looks at the Great Naruto Bridge and smiles genuinely.

If Naruto lies to himself that he was doing it for Sakura... Then Sasuke lies to himself that he left Naruto alive because he didn't want to follow Itachi's footsteps.

There's a reason why Kishimoto said that they are equals. And honestly, I couldn't see that in NS djs despite having A+++ plot. 

In any case, Sasuke was the one who for the most part kept on refusing the minimum Support Naruto was providing.

Does all these panels looks like someone who needs constant support/reassurance from Naruto??? 

Yes, he asked, “Even if that sits well with you, What about others?” in Chapter 698.

But this isn’t something Sasuke was like asking for Naruto’s constant support like they portray in the djs. He was simply curious as to how Naruto could do it if other people don’t like that Idea??? Like that time, When Sasuke landed on the Battlefield, entire Konoha 9 were against him... So what happens if the entire world were against Sasuke joining back??? 

And after Naruto put out his words on Sasuke’s behalf to be forgiven, Sasuke was already prepared to forge ahead for his next mission to change the world along with Naruto in Chapter 699. He was ready to fly... Whereas in those djs, Sasuke was portrayed with so much fragility... That’s not true at all. Yes, Everyone has some level of Fragileness, Naruto included. 

But does Fragility defines Sasuke as a person for the most part??? 

No. 

And that’s where Monstercake’s dj shined so well. She drew Naruto by retaining all his Flamboyant features and drew Sasuke to be this strong guy who is worthy to stand side by side along with the Main Character and pull a draw... Not like that Fragile blushing OOC mess. We also see that Sasuke was showing some affection in Monstercake's djs in a reasonable way... Not this disinterest we see from NS djs. Or that Sex God portrayal we see from SN djs...(Atleast KSL djs don't entirely follow this pattern and.... She made Sasuke to look out and care for Naruto in Golden Spiral... And her Sasuke is quite mature and strong and behaves like a Guy).

There is an argument thats going around which says that Sakura has never had an effect on Sasuke and that she could be easily replaced with any other kunoichi with no consequences on the story or Sasuke's character and that thats why SS doesn't work as a pairing. What do you think about this?

well, my take is that you can't really criticize sasusaku or sakura without (and i actually think people are going a tad bit overboard with this these days) pointing a finger at kishimoto's writing.

yes -- sakura technically could be replaced with any other girl, and you could argue with reasonable certainty that results won't be all that different. but this has nothing to do with sakura's character, and everything to do with her role (or lack thereof) in the overall theme of the story.

truth is, sakura isn't at all important to the narrative. remove sakura, and things change minimally, if at all. i think the sasori fight + saving sasuke from the sand dimension were the only two times where i can remember sakura directly influenced the course of the story, which is pretty sad considering this is your heroine and one of the lead characters. she definitely leaves a lot to be desired in terms of how she affects the plot, and i have no doubt kishimoto's world would have been all the more richer if he took the time to carve out more space for sakura in it.

we can clown BAMF!sakura fics all we want, but most of them are onto something when they provide commentary on her civilian status, or when they flesh out her bond with her parents/ino/kakashi/any character, because you can't have a manga about bonds, loneliness, war, family, duty, hard work, clan vs village, etc. and not let one of your main characters carry at least some of the themes -- you're gonna end up with a weird void in your story, because what is the current point of sakura's existence as a character, aside from being sarada's mother?

to say that ss makes no sense because sakura had no effect on sasuke -- like, yeah no shit lol. she barely had an effect on anything, i don't see how sasuke should be an exception. the argument would hold more weight if sakura actually had been an incremental part of the narrative, or if she was a catalyst to some other character's growth; it would serve to prove that, although she is a fleshed out character in her own right, sasuke remains unmoved by her and, well, tough luck. the problem is sakura hasn't been given a chance, because she has never had any bearing on anything. i'm not even sure she had an arc

that being said, i think that sasuke was affected by her -- and she was most definitely affected by him (i won't get into this, because i think it's obvious to most that sasuke was the catalyst to her development).

for sasuke, she may not have been this character defining, life-changing influence, like itachi was, or naruto, but as @blue-plums beautifully put it once upon a time, she couldn't stop him, but she was a speedbump. otherwise, why would sasuke, a boy who's been too fucked over in his life to really care about niceties or social conventions or who deserves what -- thank her? why would he bother to express his gratitude, on the night he chose to abandon his home (and sakura) forever, if he didn't feel that gratitude was well deserved?

Lmao! I grew up with SS fandom not giving a single fuck about Sakura outside of shipping purposes. Worshipping fanfics where she is degraded by him physically, emotionally, sexually etc(these fics are some of the most popular of the fandom) and it was never seen as a problem. SS stans constantly dismiss Sakura's pain, many of them actively romanticize all the BAD THINGS Sasuke did and act like wanting her to be treated better is a federal crime, however they think Sasuke is somehow entitled to her love, as if she is some object that exists only to make his life easier. Yet, no one finds it absurd but some random fan want her out of the “emotional punching bag” position becomes a problem.

I have been noticing a very sexist pattern here, specially when it comes from male Sasuke stans that supports ss: they love to accuse other fans of “only caring about Sakura and wanting Sasuke as a trophy” but it's purely projection, because it's THEM who do this, but since they are men and his fans, they think their attitudes are reasonable, while the female fans are labeled as “self-insert”.

This, does not happen.

The types of angst that people like to read in their fics is their business. However, I have never seen any SS fan ever explicitly dismiss Sakura's pain, or romanticise Sasuke's transgressions, or think that Sasuke is apparently entitled to her love, and who on earth ever labelled Sakura as being in the "emotional punching bag" position in the first place? Please by all means, you claim that SS fans "constantly" do these things? Then give me some examples, because I'd love to see them.

Let me also make one thing clear here...

However, the issue comes when those same people who want Sakura to be treated better, simultaneously want Sasuke to be treated worse. They want Sakura to kick his ass for mistreating them, they want Sasuke to grovel at her feet and work for her love because they were tired of her always chasing after him, they loved and supported the fact that Gigi was flirting with Sakura all because they wanted Sasuke to experience jealousy and emotional insecurity etc. That's the problem - These people want Sasuke to suffer physically and emotionally, they love seeing it, and these sentiments coming from so called SS fans, makes my skin crawl.

And trust me, you don't want to get into a discussion with me regarding sexist patterns in this fandom.

But having said that, I'm curious - Are you referring to me when you mention these apparently sexist patterns from male Sasuke fans who support SS? Because it's hard enough to actually find male Sasuke/SS fans in the first place, and you're responding to my post so I can only assume that I'm part of those you're referring to. In which case, are you willing to prove your accusations? Show me where I and all these other male Sasuke/SS fans only care about Sasuke and want Sakura as a trophy. Show me where we apparently think that just because we're men, our attitudes are reasonable, but we think that female fans are just self inserts, because I already know you won't find any examples with me. Whereas believe me, I can very easily get other examples of the things that I've mentioned; I see these attitudes all the time.

However, not once did I ever mention anything about female or male fans, so I don't see why you felt it necessary to bring gender and sexism into this, when that had nothing at all to do with my original post. I only referred to Sakura fans, and she has male fans too.

what would be the perfect ending for sasuke in your opinion?

there are so many things i want him to do genuinely. i like the idea of a naruto post-canon where everything that happens is followed up by the villages taking a stand together against the daimyos and i feel like he would be integral to that as a sort of reverse-pain figure who travels across the land and hears people’s grievances and connects to them through his own trauma that he has extensively suffered at the hands of state violence, but instead of using that collective trauma against unassuming people they use it to strip the daimyos of power by force lmao. like the problem with post-canon is it imposes all of these arbitrary spy duties on him and on him alone rather than recognizes the natural prerogative for everyone after the war is to connect with the other villages on a grand scale and form a coalition to fight back against their economic exploitation. so sasuke is one part of it in that he can recognize and empathize with people who have felt as abandoned and brutalized by the state as he has but there are also other parts like sakura traveling across the land to canvas the physical and mental health impacts of the system, hinata taking strides to destroy the class stratification that defines so much of internal clan hierarchy that is subsequently exploited for power grab purposes by multiple villages, etc. sasuke has to work with other people for there to be any change and portraying him as the lone wolf who comes back on occasion to address the quirky bad guy of the year is not conducive to any of that. put him in a library with some of the girls to learn political and economic theory they can put to use yknow?

other things that are always on my mind: (1) i personally believe there is so much more value in sasuke and sakura adopting than trying to continue the uchiha bloodline or whatever. like first of all their travels to address traumatized populations across the land would totally bring them into contact with orphans they could take under their wing but i also think it would be narratively significant for sasuke to realize he doesn’t have to carry on some legacy or burden himself with being the cornerstone of the family. that’s something that gets me about tsunade too like she’s the only living senju as far as we know but despite the clan’s noble reputation it doesn’t mean much that she’s not bearing children. her legacy is carried on through people like naruto and sakura and that’s what’s impt. and there is also a eugenics element to address imo wherein it’s very clear clans like the hyuugas and uchihas inbred and generally focused on maintaining superior bloodlines for purposes of producing super prodigies but it’s like.. why is that impt in a post-canon landscape? the truth is it isn’t. there is nothing the world would lose without an uchiha by blood bc their transcending quality is love and love is never strictly defined by blood. so. i think he and sakura should adopt ❤️

(2) one of the funniest (derogatory) things about post canon to me is making sakura into the housewife when everything about who she and sasuke are as characters points to the opposite imo.. like she’s a workaholic medical professional and i seriously doubt she is keeping a clean house so long as she lives alone. meanwhile sasuke has been ruled by discipline all of his life and grown up watching a brother who takes part in every aspect of domestic life to the point it formed sasuke’s only solace in a world of strict expectations he had to meet. but even beyond that sasuke needs busy work after everything he’s been through yknow like he’s not in any place to help himself when all he can do is stew. i like the idea of him coming home from trips and busying himself in the basic chores sakura (or even naruto) neglects to do bc her work schedule is not exactly conducive to a consistent home life. let him make the dinners and pick the weeds and go out to help villagers in the flea markets and farms while she plays hospital hero. let productivity displace the horrors in his head and make him feel like he’s working towards building something stable and strong. give the man a tomato farm

I never asked who are your favorite Naruto characters & why ? My favorites are:

1.)Kakashi (I loved him first. He was the first character I liked)

2.) Rock Lee & Might Guy (A sweetheart he deserved much more than the show gave him). I even watched Rock Lee & His Ninja Friends. I put them together because I love them. They truly made the show hilarious.

3.) Jiraiya (Oh do I miss you toad sage. :( Out of all the deaths on the show this upsets me the most).

4.) Tsunade (She is such a bad bitch. I love her).

5.) Temari (Love her as well. She has major boss bitch energy).

BONUS: Minato (Oh I love him. He is a sweetheart. Also the storyline with him and Kushina is one of the rare things Kishimoto done correctly).

Now on to the juicy stuff which Naruto characters do you hate the most & why ?

1.) Danzo (I really can’t stand this bitch. He is the root of a lot. IF THE THIRD HOKAGE DID HIS JOB THEY WOULDN’T HAVE TO DEAL WITH HIS ASS).

2.) Kabuto (What was his purpose ? So annoying)

3.) Sakura (I’m so iffy with her she has her ups and downs, but for me the negative outweigh the good. I’m very up and down with her).

4.) Sasuke (This bitch. ALOT OF THE PROBLEMS WAS BECAUSE OF HIM. He was so aggravating when going on his vengeance spree causing people trouble for what ? If anything Naruto should be the one whose evil the lead village needs their ass whoop for what they did to him).

5.) I don’t remember his name ,but the man in the early part of the series who threw a mask at Naruto when he asked about it. Can go rot in fucking hell. Naruto didn’t deserve that.

BONUS: To be honest I don’t really hate Sakura & Sasuke they just get in my damn nerves. BUT DANZO CAN ROT IN HELL. -🦑

so to ramble about some other characters that i love:

ANKO!! i love her soooo damn much. she was genuinely... the first favorite character i ever had. when i was watching naruto as a young child, everything about her absolutely enthralled me. as someone with undiagnosed adhd that severely hindered my life when i became an adult, i think in hindsight it's very.... oh. it is incredibly bizarre for me to think that all of this time, 17 years later...... i STILL cannot think of another character that's an adult woman that lets herself be unabashedly hyperactive???

i don't think i can articulate enough just how much i think the scene where she tries to sacrifice herself to take down orochimaru (with the very jutsu that they taught her in the first place!!) left such an impact on my young psyche. at the time, i... never saw something quite like that in media, and to this day it still makes me feel like "OH!!!"

i adoreee how she got her own filler arc where she's so burdened by the curse mark, but works through her lost memories and comes to terms with how she wasn't abandoned. she chose to left on her own. the rest of the arc fucking sucks but it was framed as such an incredible moment of what it means to have agency over your own life, no matter how horrible of an upbringing you had. it's a shame the anime/manga did absolutely nothing with her after this because i have. SO MANY THOUGHTS.

this is an INCREDIBLY unpopular opinion, but i actually adore kabuto to bits. i usually don't care for villain characters one way or the other, but kabuto is just so fucking funny in everything he does that i think he's hilarious. the way he plays along with being orochimaru's doting underling but also very obviously has his own agenda and orochimaru knows that too LOL. it's comedy gold that naruto doesn't even find out until two entire arcs later "WAIT..... YOU LIED TO ME!??!?"

like. i'm not going to excuse his actions. but his tragic backstory does really, really get to me. of course every goddamn character has a tragic backstory in this series but everything about his in particular strikes me as super fucked up. like the whole "he was setup into killing his foster mother" is fucked up enough in and of itself, but on top of that the way it's presented that he has no fucking clue what his own identity is and tries to constantly completely reinvent himself over and over again at all costs... it's super compelling stuff, that's the kind of storytelling i vibe with. all he knows is a name and a pair of glasses: two things the orphanage gifted him. (... it's especially the fact that it's a pair of glasses that gets to me ummm please know that i am very weak to glasses characters <3)

plus without him, we wouldn't have either ninja info cards or the gif of him swatting away bees. who is doing it like him hashtag #iconic

as you can probably infer from 1) glasses and 2) even if i have zero thoughts on orochimaru themself, i am incredibly fascinated by the way they affect other characters... yes, i also really like karin. i don't have many actual thoughts about her i just think she's neat

to finish it off with one more. well, naruto himself. i have MANYYY complicated, conflicting thoughts about him. (he sure did grow up to a hypocrite!) but... he's still naruto. there's no other character on the planet that conveys quite the same feeling that naruto instills in me. please know about me that i alwayssss fall for the trope where all of the characters pin their hopes and dreams on believing in the charismatic protagonist. this is a feeling i have that is independent from if i think the protagonist is well-written LOL. like... do you remember the two page spread during the war that was just the footprints of the allied shinobi forces that the left behind in the mud as the rain clears, all running forward because they believe in naruto. that's. that's good i like that

NARUTO CHARACTERS AS HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS

warnings: online school, profanity, not proofread, nothing too bad.

naruto would definitely be that student who always has his camera on but isn't shy about doing anything. yawning? yeah, he'll open his mouth as wide as he can. sneezing? he won't turn off his cam. "i mean, it would be the same as in irl so i don't see the problem?"

sakura is the class vice president and pretty much everyone just relies on her when a teacher asks questions. like literally when people are turning on their cams, she has it on and one thing about it is that she just looks so pretty?? it could be right at 7 in the morning but she looks fresh. excels in sciences.

sasuke is that student who does not give a single fuck about how he looks. he could be looking like his form in his curse mark level 2 but he couldn't give even a slight fuck about it. people definitely make fun of him, especially naruto, but everyone eventually gives up since it won't get a reaction from him.

sai is that student who just draws in class, or just doodles. does listen in class but when the teacher asks him something, it’s always when he’s so focused on his drawings then he’ll just, “what?” definitely that student every teacher knows just draws in class.

shikamaru is that other student that everyone relies on to answer questions but sometimes he won't answer for the fun of it (even though he'll just say, "what a drag" afterwards and does answer to get the teacher to move on). in the school groupchat, everyone's asking him for help and he does help. he's definitely the president in the class.

choji hates maths. sometimes doesn't even attend maths classes because he hates it a lot. maybe naruto as well, they both plan it and ditch classes to do something else. won't do it consecutively and tries not to make a pattern so that the teacher doesn't notice and thinks it's bad signal or an electricity problem.

ino's diligent as well. class secretary and the one who responds, "no questions, "yes," etc. when everyone's just so done with all the "are there any questions" or "did everyone understand" questions from the teacher. i can see her as someone who loves sciences as well but hates chemistry. would khs if she had to study it again.

neji's another smart one in the class, has nothing but neutral feelings to all classes but doesn't like showing his face/keeping his camera on. "i don't get why we need to have our cams on, it's not like the teacher's going to die if we don't show our faces," but does show his face once in a while. has specific classes he'll show his face and the others where he won't.

tenten definitely loves history. i can see her being all interested in it and definitely shows her love for the subject. she excels most in history and her test results are outstanding. although i can also see her as that one student who's excellent in all except for that one subject that couldn't get her to make it to the honours/high honours roll.

lee is that student who gets so motivated to do school work and romaticise it even when it’s still two weeks before the actual first day. does homework like his life depends on it. unwavering motivation that lasts until the last week of school. definitely a top student but couldn’t get to the honours roll. or more like, he didn’t appear on the honour’s roll because he thought the school would add in students automatically.

kiba has that same motivation lee has until it decreases by the third semester. he starts despising school by then and keeps complaining about schoolwork and threatening absolutely no one that he’d stop doing his homework yet submits everything on time. that student you barely see around in the classroom but starts fights in groupchats.

hinata is another top student. does complain about homework, specifically maths, but in the end, understands. has failed at least two maths exams. she’s that one student everyone, not just in the class, but the whole school, knows is shy. stutters a lot in live presentations but everyone cheers her on to give her more confidence.

shino is that student almost nobody knows what looks like. doesn’t turn on his camera until scolded or wants to, or there’s an exam. he did start to show his face more when he found out almost nobody knew what he looked like.
