a lot of my michael_b headcanons are tied up with my stardew valley au, where he's ~twelve years old and basically a stray cat that beeduo veerrryy slowly adopt after winning his trust. but i always liked the idea that he's really into animals like techno, but also nature and stuff from a more scientific standpoint, like as a hyperfixation that he researches a lot because he's very smart like his dad. it starts with his benson and making friends with ranboo's weird pets during his secluded childhood, and plants are very exciting to him bc they're nothing like he's seen before
i think he'd go on a life changing coming of age adventure to the nether when he's maybe 15, learn stuff about his heritage and come to terms with his place in the world a bit, then come back to vibe around the smp and help tubbo out sometimes (or maybe travel and write his dad lots of letters)
i absolutely agree though he deserves an edgy phase lol. honestly i think as he gets older he's gonna go from "emo teen" to "punk dad" which is just really funny to me
AGH OMG PUNK DAD MICHAEL SUITS HIM SO WELLLLLL
Michael being obsessed with nature <33 beloved hc im stealing- what if when he retires from exploring he sets up his own farm to live on. Just planting crops, taking care of animals- seems pretty ideal for him
Also hc Tubbo saves every letter Michael sends him including the envelope, he keeps them in stacks tied with plastic bands and stored in a box specifically for his letters. Plus Michael likes to send home pictures and sketches of the places he's been/ the people he meets and one of them always ends up on one of tubbos walls.

Reggie Bush, Marques Colston headline stellar Saints Hall of Fame Class of 2019
Marques Colston and Reggie Bush traveled divergent paths to the New Orleans Saints, arriving in the 2006 NFL Draft with vastly different pedigrees and expectations.
The Heisman Trophy winner out of traditional West Coast superpower Southern Cal, Bush was one of the most celebrated and decorated players in college football history and the Saints gleefully selected him with the second overall pick in that year’s NFL Draft.
Colston, meanwhile, was a complete unknown out of Hofstra, a tiny FCS school with such a meager football profile it disbanded the program in 2009. When the Saints called Colston’s name with the fourth-to-last pick in the 255-player draft, even hard-core fans were wondering “Who Dat?”
Despite their disparate paths, Bush and Colston each enjoyed spectacularly successful careers in New Orleans and left the Saints as Super Bowl champions and beloved heroes.
And 13 years after they arrived as bookend members of the famed 2006 draft class, the pair of offensive playmakers will enter the Saints Hall of Fame together this fall as members of the Hall’s Class of 2019.
“I’m just truly humbled to be on this stage and to be a part of this Hall of Fame with so many other great players,” Colston said before an overflow crowd at the Saints training facility that included, among others, Saints owner Gayle Benson and assistant coaches Pete Carmichael and Curtis Johnson. “When you come into the league as a seventh-round pick something like this isn’t really on your radar.”
Former Gov. Kathleen Blanco joined the star-studded class as the recipient of the Joe Gemelli Fleur de Lis Award for her off-field contributions to the club, spearheading the post-Katrina renovation of the Superdome.
The induction ceremony for the Class of 2019 will take place during the weekend of Oct. 25-27, when the Saints play host to the Arizona Cardinals at the Superdome.
“This is extraordinary,” said Blanco, who is battling ocular melanoma, a rare form of incurable eye cancer. “I’m very proud to feel like I’m a family member of the Saints now.”
Colston and Bush were the bookend selections of Coach Sean Payton’s first draft class and formed the core of the club’s eventual Super Bowl championship team in 2009. The eight-man class featured six players that would enjoy 10-plus-year careers in the NFL: Bush; Colston; Roman Harper; Jahri Evans; Rob Ninkovich; and Zach Strief.
“That draft class became so necessary to achieve what we wanted to achieve,” Payton said. “They were the pillars essentially to what we were going to build.”
In 10 seasons with the Saints, Colston set club records for career receptions (711), yards (9,759) and touchdowns (72). His 28 100-yard receiving games are tied for first in club history. All 72 of his touchdowns came on passes from Drew Brees, making the duo the sixth-most prolific combination in scoring pass plays in NFL history.
“He had excellent hands,” Payton said of Colston. “The consistency. The professionalism. You knew exactly what you were going to get from him every day.”
Bush, meanwhile, was one of the most dynamic big-play threats in franchise history. During his five seasons with the Saints from 2006 to 2010, he recorded 4,982 all-purpose yards and scored 33 touchdowns. He rushed for 2,090 yards and 17 touchdowns and caught 294 passes for 2,142 yards and 12 touchdowns. He also returned five punts for touchdowns, including an 83-yarder to seal a 45-14 win against Arizona in the 2009 NFC divisional playoffs.
“That Super Bowl season was just an amazing run and an amazing time for the city,” Bush said. “New Orleans is home away from home for me. I couldn’t be happier to go into the Saints Hall of Fame with Colston.”
Blanco, 78, served as the state’s first and only female governor from 2004 to 2008. In the wake of Hurricane Katrina, she lobbied the state legislature to approve funding for repairs to the stadium and helped fast-track the construction process, allowing the team to return to its home stadium for the 2006 season. The lobby of the Mercedes-Benz Superdome was named in her honor during a Jan. 13 ceremony before the Saints’ NFC divisional playoff game against Philadelphia.
In 2011, Blanco was diagnosed with eye cancer that recently spread to her liver. She received hospice care in her Lafayette home in April but has felt well enough in recent weeks to start traveling again.
“This is a highlight of my life, the last thing that I would ever have imagined,” Blanco said. “This is quite a memory marker for us, for me and my family. I do have a lot of challenges ahead of me, but I’m going to plan to be here in October.”

My Evening Coffee with God 01.26.19
Tumblr media
I start every morning and evening with coffee and God through daily devotions from Our Daily Bread Ministries, https://odb.org. “Free from Frostbite” is the title of today’s devotion. The scripture is from Psalm 119:33–48 with the key verse, “Direct me in the path of your commands, for there I find delight.” Psalm 119:35. Jennifer Benson Schuldt wrote this devotion. Genesis 1:27 | So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male & female He created them.
Joseph Benson, English Methodist (1749–1821) | Genesis 1:27
In his natural, but especially in his moral image, with an habitual conformity of all his powers to the will of God, his understanding clearly discerning, his judgment entirely approving, his will readily choosing, and his affections cordially embracing his chief good; without error in his knowledge, disorder in his passions, or irregularity or inordinancy in his appetites; his senses also being all inlets to wisdom & enjoyment, and all his faculties of body & mind subservient to the glory of God & his own felicity [intense happiness]!
But man being in honour did not abide, but became like the beasts that perish!
Ephesians 5:1-33 | Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children. And walk in love, as Christ loved us & gave Himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. But sexual immorality & all impurity or covetousness must not even be named among you, as is proper among saints. Let there be no filthiness, nor foolish talk, nor crude joking, which are out of place, but instead let there be thanksgiving. For you may be sure of this, that everyone who is sexually immoral or impure, or who is covetous (that is, an idolater), has no inheritance in the kingdom of Christ & God. ...
What cause we have for thankfulness that this image of God may be restored to our souls, and how earnestly ought we to pray for, and how diligently to seek this most important of all attainments!
The particular history of the woman’s creation is brought in afterward by way of further elucidation, & to introduce the account of the institution of marriage.
Genesis 2:18 | Then the Lord God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him.”
1 Timothy 2:13-15 | For Adam was formed first, & then Eve. And it was not Adam who was deceived, but the woman who was deceived & fell into transgression. Women, however, will be saved through childbearing, if they continue in faith, love, & holiness, w/ self-control.
1 Corinthians 11:1-16 | You are to imitate me, just as I imitate Christ. Now I commend you for remembering me in everything & for maintaining the traditions, just as I passed them on to you. But I want you to understand that the head of every man is Christ, & the head of the woman is man, & the head of Christ is God. Every man who prays or prophesies w/ his head covered dishonors his head. And every woman who prays or prophesies w/ her head uncovered dishonors her head, for it is just as if her head were shaved. If a woman does not cover her head, she should have her hair cut off. And if it is shameful for a woman to have her hair cut or shaved off, she should cover her head. A man ought not to cover his head, since he is the image & glory of God; but the woman is the glory of man. For man did not come from woman, but woman from man. Neither was man created for woman, but woman for man. For this reason a woman ought to have a sign of authority on her head, because of the angels. In the Lord, however, woman is not independent of man, nor is man independent of woman. For just as woman came from man, so also man is born of woman. But everything comes from God. Judge for yourselves: Is it proper for a woman to pray to God w/ her head uncovered? Doesn’t nature itself teach you that if a man has long hair, it is a disgrace to him, but that if a woman has long hair, it is her glory? For long hair is given to her as a covering. If anyone is inclined to dispute this, we have no other practice, nor do the churches of God.
God formed the woman from the man, & caused the whole race of mankind to descend from one original pair, that all the families & nations of men, being made of one blood, & proceeding from one common stock, might know themselves to be brethren, & might love & assist one another to the uttermost of their power: but, alas! what a sad reverse of this do we daily see exemplified before our eyes!              ________________________________________________________
Charles John Ellicott, English Theologian (1819–1905) | 1 Corinthians 11:10
For this cause ought the woman to have power on her head—The two clauses which compose this verse are, perhaps, the 2 most difficult passages in the NT, and, accordingly, have given rise to an almost endless variety of interpretation. What is meant, first, by the woman having "power on her head?"
There have been many—some of them most fanciful—suggestions that the word for power [exousia] may have crept in instead of some other word by the mistake of some copyist; or that the word used by Paul may have been exiousa—"When she goes out in public;" or two words [ex ousias]—"in accordance with her nature." All explanations, however, which require an alteration in the Greek text of the passage must be set aside, for [1] there is no MS. evidence whatever to support any other reading than the ordinary one, exousian; & [2] any alteration of a difficult or unusual word would have been naturally into a word that would simplify the passage—whereas here, if alteration has taken place, it has been to insert a word which has increased the obscurity of a difficult passage.
It has been maintained that the word exousia here means the sign of power, i.e., a veil, which is the symbol of the husband's power over the wife. The fatal objection to this view, however, is that exousia expresses our own power, & not the power exercised by another over us. It is a word frequently used by Paul in this sense. [See 1Corinthians 8:9; 9:4-5; 9:12; 9:18.] Whatever interpretation, therefore, we put upon this passage, it must be consistent with this word being interpreted as meaning some "power" which the woman herself has, & not some power exercised over her by her husband.
Most commentators have quoted a passage from Diodorus Sic. i. 47, in which the Greek word "kingdom" [basileia] is used to signify "crown," as an illustration of the use of the word indicating the thing symbolised for the symbol itself. The parallelism between that use of the word kingdom, & the use here of the word "power," has been very positively denied [Stanley & others], on the ground that the "use of the name of the thing signified for the symbol, though natural when the power spoken of belongs to the person, would be unnatural when applied to the power exercised over that person by some one else." But the parallelism will hold good if we can refer the "power" here to some symbol of a power which belongs to the woman herself.
If we bear in mind the Apostle's constant use of words with a double significance, or rather with both an obvious & a subtly implied meaning, & if we also recall the reference made to a woman's abundance of hair in 1Corinthians 11:5-6, & the further reference to a woman's long hair in 1Corinthians 11:14-15, where the hair of the woman, given her by nature, & the wearing of a veil are used as almost identical thoughts, we may, I think, conclude that the "power" here spoken of is that long hair which in 1Corinthians 11:15 her "glory."
It is remarkable that Callistratus twice uses this word exousia in connection with hair to express its abundance.
To the Jews the recollection of Samson's history would have given the word "power," when applied to hair, a remarkable significance.
To thus turn aside abruptly in the middle of a long passage in which woman's subordination is enforced, & speak suddenly & vividly of her "power," would be eminently Paul.
In the Apostle's writings the thought of inferiority & superiority, of ruler & server, are frequently & almost paradoxically regarded & enforced as identical.
To serve because you rule; to be weak because you are in another sense strong, are thoughts strikingly combined again & again in the Epistles of Paul.
Thus I would imagine him here to suddenly turn aside & say, I have been speaking of your bondage & subordination, you are, because of this, to have a covering [a veil or long hair] on your head as a sign, & yet that very thing which is the symbol of your subjection to man is the sign of your beauty & "power" as a woman.             ________________________________________________________
Because of the angels—Why should a woman have her head covered [either with her natural veil of hair, or with an artificial veil shrouding her face] because of the angels? The same objections which have been already stated to any alteration of the usual Greek text of the earlier clause of this v.apply equally here. The MS. evidence is unanimous in favour of the word "angels," nor can we accept any of the figurative meanings attached to the word angel as "the president" [Revelation 2:1], or "messenger," sent by enemies to see what took place contrary to general custom in those assemblies. We must take the word "angel" in its ordinary & general sense.
Revelation 2:1 | “To the angel of the church in Ephesus write: These are the words of Him who holds the seven stars in His right hand & walks among the seven golden lampstands.
That the angels were present in assemblies for worship was an idea prevalent among the Jews [Psalm 138:1], & regarded as they were by the Christian as "ministering spirits" [Hebrews 1:14], no doubt their presence would be realised in the meetings of Christians.
Psalm 138:1 | Of David. I give You thanks w/ all my heart; before the gods I sing Your praises.
Hebrews 1:14 | Are not the angels ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation?
We have already seen that the Apostle in his argument upon the relation of the sexes to each other [1 Corinthians 11:7-9], refers to the 1st 3 CHs of Genesis as illustrating & enforcing that relationship.
1 Corinthians 11:7-9 | A man ought not to cover his head, since he is the image & glory of God; but the woman is the glory of man. For man did not come from woman, but woman from man. Neither was man created for woman, but woman for man.
What more natural than that his thoughts should have gone on to Corinthians of the same book, where is the record of the angels [in the LXX. the word translated "sons of God" is "the angels"—angeloi] having been enamoured by the beauty of women, & so having fallen from their high estate.
This account of "the fall of the angels" is referred to more than once elsewhere in the New Testament [Jude 1:6; 1 Corinthians 11:10; 2 Peter 2:4], & through Rabbinical interpretations would have been familiar to Paul's converts.
Jude 1:6-7 | And the angels who did not stay w/in their own domain but abandoned their proper dwelling—these He has kept in eternal chains under darkness, bound for judgment on that great day. In like manner, Sodom & Gomorrah & the cities around them, who indulged in sexual immorality & pursued strange flesh, are on display as an example of those who sustain the punishment of eternal fire.
1 Corinthians 11:10 | For this reason a woman ought to have a sign of authority on her head, because of the angels.
2 Peter 2:4 | For if God did not spare the angels when they sinned, but cast them deep into hell, placing them in chains of darkness to be held for judgment;
Without at all necessarily expressing his belief in the historic accuracy of this legendary view of the fall of the angels, Paul might use it as an argument with those who did believe it [as in the case of the Rock,1 Corinthians 10:4].
1 Corinthians 10:4 | and drank the same spiritual drink; for they drank from the spiritual rock that accompanied them, & that rock was Christ.
You believe—would be St. Paul's appeal to these women—that once, through seeing the beauty of the daughters of men, the holy angels themselves fell—even that thought ought to make you feel that it is not seemly for you to be without a veil [of which your "power on your head," i.e., your hair, is the type] in those assemblies where the angels are present as God's ministering spirits.
It has been urged [by Meyer & others] that the word "angels," in the NT, always signifies good angels, & it is in that sense I would regard it here, for the thought surely is, that they are good angels, & should not, therefore, be tempted. I presume the idea was also that the fallen angels were "good" before their fall.                 _______________________________________________________
Ephesians 5:1-33 | Be imitators of God, therefore, as beloved children, & walk in love, just as Christ loved us & gave Himself up for us as a fragrant sacrificial offering to God. But among you, as is proper among the saints, there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed.
Nor should there be obscenity, foolish talk, or crude joking, which are out of character, but rather thanksgiving.
For of this you can be sure: No immoral, impure, or greedy person (that is, an idolater), has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ & of God.
Let no one deceive you w/ empty words, for because of such things the wrath of God is coming on the sons of disobedience.
Therefore do not be partakers w/ them.
For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord.
Walk as children of light, for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness, & truth.
Test & prove what pleases the Lord.
Proving what is acceptable unto the Lord—So in Romans 12:2, the “proving what is the good & acceptable & perfect will of God,” is the fruit of transformation “in the renewing of the mind.” “To prove” is to try in each case, by the full light of God, what is accordant to His will; it is a work partly of thought, partly of practical experience; & it always implies a searching examination of heart & action by the touchstone of God’s word [Ellicott].
Have no fellowship w/ the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them. For it is shameful even to mention what the disobedient do in secret.
But everything exposed by the light becomes visible, for everything that is illuminated becomes a light itself.
So it is said: “Wake up, O sleeper, rise up from the dead, & Christ will shine on you.” Pay careful attention, then, to how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, redeeming the time, because the days are evil.
Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is.
Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to reckless indiscretion. Instead, be filled w/ the Spirit.
Speak to one another w/ psalms, hymns, & spiritual songs.
Sing & make music in your hearts to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.
Wives, submit to your husbands as to the Lord.
For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, His body, of which He is the Savior. Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything.
Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church & gave Himself up for her to sanctify her, cleansing her by the washing w/ water through the word, & to present her to Himself as a glorious church, w/out stain or wrinkle or any such blemish, but holy & blameless. In the same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. Indeed, no one ever hated his own body, but he nourishes & cherishes it, just as Christ does the church.
For we are members of His body.
“For this reason a man will leave his father & mother & be united to his wife, & the two will become one flesh.”
This mystery is profound, but I am speaking about Christ & the church. Nevertheless, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, & the wife must respect her husband.

‘It’s flavourful as hell’: welcome to Hawaii’s annual Spam festival
In Britain its a joke. In Hawaii its a delicacy. Why does the luncheon meat have such a cult following?
Not even the drizzle can deter the crowds unspooling along Hawaiis Waikiki Beach. As late April showers fall upon Kalakaua Avenue, the roads are lined three-deep with sunburned tourists, surfer bros and silver-haired pensioners. Their colourful T-shirts, flower garlands and fancy dress costumes are soaked by rain, but eagerly they wait. Suddenly, a chorus of tiny ukuleles starts to play. The procession begins. Are they waiting to pay homage to a visiting dignitary or religious leader? No. Theyre here to celebrate Hawaiis favourite food: the immortal luncheon meat called Spam.
I join snaking queues for seemingly endless food stalls, each dish more absurd than the last: Spam pizza, Spam fried rice, Spam crackers, Spam pho, deep-fried mac and cheese bites (with Spam) and, of course, Spam fritters. I spot some Spam-infused macadamia nuts, and a slab of grilled Spam atop sticky rice, doused in soy and bound with seaweed: Spam sushi. Theres even Spam dipped in chocolate.
Serious Spam fans are focused on buying up rare flavours such as Spam Mezclita, Spam Tocino and Spam Portuguese Sausage. Others snap selfies beneath a giant arch of Spam cans, or gawp at a catamaran festooned with Spam tins. Kids try their luck at the Spam wheel of fortune, hoping to take home a branded T-shirt or headphones. I stumble into a king-sized Spam can made of foam, with human arms and legs sticking out. Inside is Honolulu Foodbank employee John Valdez. What would Hawaii be without Spam? he shouts through the costume. It would be boring!
Welcome to Spam Jam, the largest gathering of tinned pork enthusiasts on Earth. Today, I am one of 20,000 fans at the 15th annual event. The residents of Americas 50th state eat more Spam per capita than anywhere on earth, with Hawaiian steak found on five-star restaurant menus and at McDonalds. Last year, 8m cans were sold here and thats just the regular-sized ones, not counting Spam Singles, Spam Spread or smaller tins. But its not just Hawaii that adores Spam: in time for Spams 80th birthday on 5 July, global can sales topped 8bn.
Cans of Spam on display at the Spam Jam. Photograph: Marco Garcia for the Guardian
In Britain, Spam is derided as fish bait, furniture varnish or gun grease; there have long been rumours that it contains pigs lips, snouts, trotters and tail. In fact, it lists just a half-dozen ingredients: pork with ham (Two cuts of the pig. One perfectly tender and juicy flavour), water, salt, sugar, potato starch and sodium nitrite. Spams makers are keen to point out that theres no hidden scrapings or useless bits of pork, and that its all from the shoulder or rear. In fact, at 90% pork, Spam rivals some luxury sausages. Yet in the UK its reputation is up there with Turkey Twizzlers, while its high salt and fat content make it the kind of processed food we now avoid for our health. If Spam is known in Britain as a culinary punchline, why is it so popular across the Atlantic?
In Austin, Minnesota, population 24,716, all roads lead to Spam. Spamtown USA, as it is sometimes known, is a cutesy, model version of a city, all straight lines and artificial lakes. It was here in 1891 that George A Hormel founded a family meatpacking firm that would one day become a Fortune 500 mainstay, employing one in six of Austins inhabitants. Hormels got his feet sticking out the window again, schoolchildren used to say, when the porky odour floated out factory doors.
Georges son, Jay Hormel, was a born opportunist: as a child, hed pay two cents for housewives unwanted sink grease, then hawk it to his fathers soap-making divisionfor twice the price. In 1929, he succeeded George as president and soon came up with a way to make use of rarely butchered pork shoulder meat. He adapted a Napoleonic food preservation technique, adding salt and sodium nitrite to keep it pink and ward off botulism, and at the same time making it indefinitely edible. By 1942, Hormel Foods was selling $120m- worth of Spam a year.

Hormel-owned structures still dominate Austins skyline. Theres the stinky plant, rolling office blocks and the Hormel Institute, a biomedical research centre. The apex of the citys microscopic tourist industry is a newly revamped Spam museum, an Ikea-coloured time capsule of social, military and pop culture history. With Spam print beanbags, touch-sensitive screens and a jungle gym, the museum is aimed at the meat lovers of tomorrow, but when I visit it is also packed with elderly locals and Mormon missionaries. Inside, a bespectacled tour guide finds everything Spamazing, including a production line of cans that whizz overhead like Scalextric.
It is the meat that won the war, my guide cheerily informs me. During the second world war, allied soldiers consumed 68,000 tonnes of Spam, but Jay Hormel was devastated by the hate mail he received. The language people use! he told the New Yorker in 1945. If they think Spam is terrible, they ought to have eaten the bully beef we had in the last war. Hormel died in 1954, before President Eisenhower sent a letter with a personal pardon. I ate my share of Spam Ill even confess to a few unkind remarks about it, he wrote, on the firms 75th anniversary in business. But as former commander-in-chief, I believe I can still officially forgive you your only sin: sending us so much of it.

Today, the Spam museum is hosting its first wedding. Tying the knot are an eccentric British couple, Anne Mousley, 33, and Mark Benson, 42. A smiley care worker from Liverpool, Benson recently changed his middle name by deed poll to I Love Spam. His grandfather worked in Liverpools Spam factory after the war. No prizes for guessing the wedding buffet. Its like nothing else, says Benson of his favourite food, which he eats at least twice a week. Bit of a bacon flavour, bit of a porky flavour. Its totally unique. Spam aficionados of such calibre are rare, although I do learn of one Nebraskan man who in 2007 survived a 30-day Spam-only eating challenge.
Meanwhile, in South Korea, second only to America for Spam consumption, profits are booming. During the lunar new year, Spam is given as a gift, and budae jjigae, a Spam-infused army stew from the second world war, remains popular.
I learn that island territories such as Guam and Micronesia see Spam as a life-saver. During extreme weather, Spams limitless shelf life makes it a Pacific Islanders best friend. Later, I speak to a wild-haired Spam celebrity in rural Alaska, known as Mr Whitekeys. For 26 years, he ran a Spam-themed bar, complete with frequent Spammer cards buy 10 meals, get one free. If you want meat, you gotta have Spam, he says via Skype. Why? You cant get fresh supplies in large amounts, and half the time you dont have refrigeration.
Back in sunny Hawaii, breakfast beers are noisily slammed on a plastic folding table. Three miles from Waikiki Beach, I am mingling with professional chefs at the esteemed Kakaako farmers market, surrounded by organic produce and artisanal pasta. Keen to know what islanders really think of Spam, I talk to chef Mark Gooch Noguchi, 43, who runs the Pili Group, a culinary movement based around healthy, sustainable food. The opposite, one would assume, of Spam.

But I love, love, love Spam, Noguchi tells me, unprompted, between swigs of beer, dressed in shorts, flip-flops and a loud flowery shirt. We grew up on it, he explains, passing me a pan-fresh beef taco. I remember when I was cooking in New York, other chefs would joke with me, like, Ha, you guys eat Spam, he says. But our parents had gone through the second world war. The big joke among local people is that if you visit your grandparents and look downstairs, theres six cases of toilet paper, four cases of paper towels and three cases of Spam. In Hawaii, Spam is the cement that bonds its many cultures from Japanese, Filipino and Hawaiian native, through to mainland United States. Noguchi proudly boasts that locals can tell Spam from its canned-pork competitors Tulip and Treet. Elsewhere, Spam is slowly being appropriated by hipster culture, just like scotch eggs and avocado before it. Its both an indulgence of nostalgia and two fingers up to eating clean. In Londons Soho, Jinjuu restaurant makes a Spamarita cocktail, mixing Spam-infused Ocho tequila with mezcal, pineapple, citrus, mandarin orange and agave nectar. And Saint Marc, an upscale restaurant in Huntington Beach, California, has a hidden Spam speakeasy known as the Blind Pig.

Its revered, man, says Nina Pullella, 36, a chef I meet at Kakaako market. I think its the challenge of taking a can off the shelf this strange food from the second world war and doing something spectacular. Pullella is a vegan, from New Jersey via Italy, yet she still oozes praise for Spam as an ingredient (Its flavourful as hell, right?). After three hours at the market, I find just one person down on Spam. And she wont talk on record. Are you kidding? Ill have the whole island on my back, she whispers.
Night falls on Waikiki Beach. As the raindrops evaporate, a female rock band loudly tests the suspension of a flatbed stage. There is a snaking queue for OnoPops, an ice-cream company that flogs a Spam-based popsicle. Its a heartstrings thing, explains owner Josh Lanthier-Welch, 46, a stout man with a goatee. Though a Spam devotee, he warns of the dangers of excess: The Spam musubi [sushi] is a symbol of whats wrong with the local diet. It is so beloved, but living on Spam, white rice and nori will kill you.
As the festival comes to a close, I decide to break my 20-plus years of Spam abstinence (I havent touched the stuff since childhood). Im handed a skewer of cold cubed Spam and crunchy vegetables. I sink my teeth into the soft meat, and am transported back to my youth. The salty, pork-ish flavour wafts up my nostrils. I feel dirty and a little bit sick. Next I try a hot Spam katsu sandwich, from Hula Grill. I take a small bite. Then a larger one. It has a deep, smoky bacon flavour, offset by rich katsu sauce. It is, Im almost embarrassed to say, tremendous. Spam tempura fries, Spam corn dogs and Spam dim sum soon follow.
As I chew, I wonder if Spam deserves its reputation. Perhaps Brits just lack the imagination to cook Spam right. Or maybe, like KitKats in Japan or David Hasselhoffs mega-stardom in Germany, Spam should simply remain a pop culture anomaly the American Marmite that one either loves or hates.

Spam fritters
Serves three.
340g Spam (ie, 1 can) 150g plain flour 225ml cold water 3 tbsp olive oil Buttered roll (optional) Cut the Spam lengthways into six thick slices. Put the flour in a mixing bowl and slowly introduce the water, whisking, until you have a smooth batter.
Heat the oil in a large frying pan. Dip each slice of Spam in the batter mix, shake to drain off any excess and lay in the hot pan. When its golden and crisp on one side, flip and repeat until its brown and crisp on both sides.
Serve in a buttered roll, if desired, with chips and peas on the side.

RE: 2 Peter 3:9 | ⁹ The LORD is not slow to fulfill HIS promise        as some understand slowness, but is patient with you,        not wanting anyone to perish but everyone to come to        repentance.
Tumblr media
What does it mean that GOD is not willing for any to perish?
Tumblr media
The second half of the verse, “not willing that any should perish,     but that all should come to repentance,” is frequently used to     argue against the doctrine of election.
The context of 2 Peter 3:9 is a description of scoffers who doubt     that JESUS is going to return to judge the world with fire     [2 Peter 3:3-7].
The scoffers mock, “Where is this coming?” [v.4]
In v.5-6 Peter reminds his readers that GOD previously     destroyed the world with the flood in Noah’s time.
In v.7, Peter informs his readers that the present heavens &     earth will be destroyed with fire.
Peter then responds to a question he knew was on his     readers’ minds, namely, “what is taking GOD so long?”
In v.8, Peter tells his readers that GOD is above & beyond the     concept of time. It may seem like we have been waiting a long     time, but, to GOD, it has been a blink of an eye.
Then, in v.9, Peter explains why GOD has waited so long     [in our view of time].
Tumblr media
It is GOD’s mercy that delays HIS judgment.
Tumblr media
GOD is waiting to give more people the opportunity to repent.
Then, in the verses following v.9, Peter encourages his readers     to live holy lives in anticipation of the fact JESUS will return.
Some of the confusion regarding the meaning of 2 Peter 3:9     is the wording of the KJV translation:
“not willing that any should perish.”
Not willing makes it sound as if GOD does not allow any to perish.
However, in 17th-century English, willing carried more of an     idea of desire than of volition.
The modern English translations of 2 Peter 3:9 render the same     phrase “not wanting” [NIV & CSB], “not wishing” [ESV & NASB],     & “does not want” [NLT].
Tumblr media
In no sense does 2 Peter 3:9 contradict the idea that GOD     elects certain people to salvation.
Tumblr media
First, in context, election is not at all what the verse is talking     about. Second, to interpret “not willing that any should perish”     as “does not allow any to perish” results in the false doctrine     of universalism.
But GOD can “not desire” anyone to perish & still only elect     some to salvation.
There is nothing incongruous about that.
GOD did not desire for sin to enter the world     through the fall of Adam & Eve, yet HE allowed it.
In fact, it was part of HIS sovereign plan.
GOD did not desire HIS only begotten SON to be betrayed,     brutally tortured, & murdered, yet HE allowed it.
This, too, was part of GOD’s sovereign plan.
In the same way, GOD does not desire anyone to perish.
He desires all to come to repentance.
At the same time, GOD recognizes that not everyone will     come to repentance.
It is undeniable that many will perish [Matthew 7:13–14].
Rather than being a contradiction to 2 Peter 3:9, GOD’s     electing & drawing of some to salvation is evidence that     HE truly does not desire people to perish.
Were it not for election & the effectual calling of GOD,     everyone would perish [John 6:44; Romans 8:29–30].

       ●  Psalm 77:8 | ⁸ Is HIS loving devotion gone forever?             Has HIS promise failed for all time?
       ●  Ecclesiastes 8:11 | ¹¹ When the sentence for a crime             is not speedily executed, the hearts of men become             fully set on doing evil.
       ●  Isaiah 30:18 | ¹⁸ Therefore the LORD longs to be             gracious to you; therefore HE rises to show you             compassion, for the LORD is a just GOD.             Blessed are all who wait for HIM.
       ●  Ezekiel 33:11 | ¹¹ Say to them: ‘As surely as I live,             declares the LORD GOD, I take no pleasure in the             death of the wicked, but rather that the wicked             should turn from their ways & live.
Turn! Turn from your evil ways!             For why should you die, O house of Israel?’
       ●  Daniel 4:29-33 | ²⁹ Twelve months later, as he was             walking on the roof of the royal palace of Babylon,             ³⁰ the king exclaimed, “Is this not Babylon the Great,             which I myself have built by the might of my power             as a royal residence & for the glory of my majesty?”
³¹ While the words were still in the king’s mouth, a             voice came from heaven: “It is decreed to you,             King Nebuchadnezzar, that the kingdom has             departed from you.
³² You will be driven away from mankind to live             with the beasts of the field, & you will feed on grass             like cattle. And seven times will pass you by, until             you acknowledge that the Most High is ruler over the             kingdom of men, & HE gives it to whom HE wishes.”
³³ At that moment the sentence against             Nebuchadnezzar was fulfilled.
He was driven away from mankind.
He ate grass like cattle, & his body was drenched with             the dew of heaven, until his hair grew like the feathers             of an eagle & his nails like the claws of a bird.
       ●  Habakkuk 2:3 | ³ For the vision awaits an appointed             time; it testifies of the end, & will not lie. Though it             lingers, wait for it, since it will surely come & not             delay.
       ●  Luke 18:7 | ⁷ Will not GOD bring about justice for HIS             elect who cry out to HIM day & night?             Will HE continue to defer their help?
       ●  Romans 2:4 | ⁴ Or do you disregard the riches of HIS             kindness, tolerance, & patience, not realizing that             GOD’s kindness leads you to repentance?
       ●  Romans 13:11-12 | ¹¹ And do this, understanding the             occasion. The hour has come for you to wake up             from your slumber, for our salvation is nearer now             than when we first believed.
¹² The night is nearly over; the day has drawn near.             So let us lay aside the deeds of darkness & put on             the armor of light.
       ●  1 Timothy 2:4 | ⁴ who desires all men to be saved             & to come to the knowledge of the truth.
       ●  Hebrews 10:37 | ³⁷ For, “In just a little while, HE             who is coming will come & will not delay.
       ●  2 Peter 1:4 | ⁴ Through these HE has given us HIS             precious & magnificent promises, so that through             them you may become partakers of the divine             nature, now that you have escaped the corruption             in the world caused by evil desires.
       ●  2 Peter 3:15 | ¹⁵ Consider also that our LORD's             patience brings salvation, just as our beloved             brother Paul also wrote you with the wisdom             GOD gave him.
Tumblr media
Charles John Ellicott, Theologian [1819–1905] | 2 Peter 3:9
Tumblr media
[9] Third Answer—a practical one:
Make good use of what to you seems to be delay.
1.]  The LORD is not slack—We are in doubt whether     “the LORD” means CHRIST or GOD the FATHER.
In 2 Peter 3:8 “the LORD” certainly means GOD; & this     is in favour of the same meaning here.
On the other hand, “concerning HIS promise” naturally     refers to CHRIST’s promise that HE will return.
The same doubt recurs with regard to 2 Peter 3:15     [see Note there].
By “is not slack is meant “does not delay beyond the time     appointed.” There is no dilatoriness; HE waits, but is never     slow, is never late.
2] Concerning his promise—The Greek construction is peculiar     formed on the analogy of a comparative adjective—“is not     slower than HIS promise.” [Romans 3:23.]
3] But is longsuffering—[2Peter 3:15 & 1Peter 3:20]
As  Augustine puts it, GOD is patiens quia aeternus     —longsuffering because HE is eternal.
HE who is from everlasting to everlasting can afford to wait.
4] To us-ward—The true reading, beyond all doubt, is towards you.
It is specially natural here that  Peter should not include     himself among those whom he addresses; for he is     writing mainly to Gentile Christians [2 Peter 1:1],
& this longsuffering of GOD had been conspicuous in     HIS dealings with the Gentiles [Romans 11:11-36.]
[See second Note on 1 Peter 1:12.]
Tumblr media
Joseph Benson, Methodist [1749–1821] | 2 Peter 3:9
Tumblr media
1] The LORD is not slack—does not delay, or is not slow;     concerning HIS promise—To fulfil it, as if the time fixed     for the fulfilment of it were past;
for it shall surely be fulfilled in its season; but is long-suffering,
2] to us-ward—Children of men; not willing that any should     perish—Any human being, any soul that HE has made.
    That is, HE is not primarily willing; HIS first will, with regard     to the whole posterity of Adam, has been & is, that     they should be eternally saved;
& as a proof of it HE has given HIS SON a ransom for all;     [1 Timothy 2:6; Hebrews 2:9;]
has commanded HIS GOSPEL, that is, the glad tidings of     salvation, to be preached to all, to every human creature     [Mark 16:15]
&, to help man’s weakness, causes HIS grace, even     HIS saving grace, [literally signifies] to appear to, or     to visit & strive with, all men, in order to their     repentance, faith, & new obedience.
But if they reject HIS counsel against themselves, which     they are under no necessity of doing, by continuing     impenitent, unbelieving, & disobedient,
Then, secondly, HE wills, & that justly, that they should     perish, for they are accountable to HIM, their rightful     Lawgiver, Governor, & Judge,
& HE will judge them, & all the world, in righteousness.
Tumblr media
Matthew Henry, Nonconformist [1662-1714] | 2 Peter 3:5-10
Tumblr media
Had these scoffers considered the dreadful vengeance with     which GOD swept away a whole world of ungodly men     at once, surely they would not have scoffed at HIS     threatening an equally terrible judgment.
The heavens & the earth which now are, by the same word,     it is declared, will be destroyed by fire.
This is as sure to come, as the truth         & the power of GOD can make it.
Christians are here taught & established in the truth of the     coming of the LORD. Though, in the account of men,     there is a vast difference between one day & 1K years,     yet, in the account of GOD, there is no difference.
All things past, present, & future, are ever before HIM:     the delay of 1K years cannot be so much to HIM, as     putting off any thing for a day or for an hour is to us.
If men have no knowledge or belief of the eternal GOD,     they will be very apt to think HIM such as themselves.
How hard is it to form any thoughts of eternity!
What men count slackness, is long-suffering, & that to     us-ward; it is giving more time to HIS own people, to     advance in knowledge & holiness, & in the     exercise of faith & patience,
to abound in good works, doing &         suffering what they are called to,         that they may bring glory to GOD.
Settle therefore in your hearts that you shall certainly be     called to give an account of all things done in the body,     whether good or evil.
And let a humble & diligent walking before GOD, & a     frequent judging of yourselves, show a firm belief of the     future judgment, though many live as if they were never     to give any account at all.
This day will come, when men are secure, & have no     expectation of the day of the LORD.
The stately palaces, & all the desirable things wherein     wordly-minded men seek & place their happiness,     shall be burned up; all sorts of creatures GOD has made,
& all the works of men, must pass through the fire,         which shall be a consuming fire to all that sin         has brought into the world, though a refining fire to         the works of GOD's hand.
What will become of us, if we set our affections on this     earth, & make it our portion, seeing all these things     shall be burned up?
       ●  Revelation 18:7-9 | ⁷ As much as she has glorified            herself & lived in luxury, give her the same measure            of torment & grief. In her heart she says,            ‘I sit as queen; I am not a widow & will never see grief.’
⁸ Therefore her plagues will come in one day—death            & misery & famine—& she will be consumed by fire,            for mighty is the LORD GOD who judges her.”
⁹ Then the kings of the earth who committed sexual            immorality & lived in luxury with her will weep &            wail at the sight of the smoke rising from the fire            that consumes her.
       ●  James 5:1-6 | ¹ Come now, you who are rich, weep            & wail for the misery to come upon you.
² Your riches have rotted & moths have eaten your            clothes. ³ Your gold & silver are corroded.
Their corrosion will testify against you & consume            your flesh like fire. You have hoarded treasure            in the last days.
⁴ Look, the wages you withheld from the workmen            who mowed your fields are crying out against you.
The cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the            LORD of Hosts. ⁵ You have lived on earth in luxury &            self-indulgence. You have fattened your hearts in the            day of slaughter. ⁶ You have condemned & murdered            the righteous, who did not resist you.
Therefore make sure of happiness beyond this visible world.

Albert Barnes, American Theologian [1798-1870] | 2 Peter 3:9
Tumblr media
1] The LORD is not slack concerning HIS promise—That is, it     should not be inferred because HIS promise seems to be     long delayed that therefore it will fail.
When people, after a considerable lapse of time, fail to fulfil     their engagements, we infer that it is because they have     changed their plans, or because they have forgotten     their promises, or because they have no ability to perform     them, or because there is a lack of principle which makes     them fail, regardless of their obligations.
But no such inference can be drawn from the     apparent delay of the fulfillment of the divine purposes.
Whatever may be the reasons why they seem to be     deferred, with GOD, we may be sure that it is from     no such causes as these.
2] As some men count slackness—It is probable that the     apostle here had his eye on some professing Christians     who had become disheartened & impatient,
& who, from the delay in regard to the coming of the     LORD JESUS, & from the representations of those     who denied the truth of the Christian religion,     arguing from that delay that it was false,
began to fear that HIS promised coming     would indeed never occur.
To such he says that it should not be inferred from HIS     delay that HE would not return, but that the delay should     be regarded as an evidence of HIS desire that men     should have space for repentance,
& an opportunity to secure their salvation.
[See the notes at 2 Peter 3:15]
3] But is long-suffering to us-ward—Toward us.
The delay should be regarded as a proof of HIS forbearance,     & of HIS desire that all human beings should be saved.
Every sinner should consider the fact that he is     not cut down in his sins, not as a proof that     GOD will not punish the wicked,
but as a demonstration that HE is now forbearing,         & is willing that he should have an ample         opportunity to obtain eternal life.
    No one should infer that GOD will not execute HIS threats,     unless he can look into the most distant parts of a     coming eternity, & demonstrate that there is no suffering     appointed for the sinner there;
anyone who sins, & who is spared even for a moment,         should regard the respite as only a proof that GOD         is merciful & forbearing now.
4] Not willing that any should perish—That is, HE does not     desire it or wish it.
HIS nature is benevolent, & HE sincerely desires     the eternal happiness of all, & HIS patience     toward sinners "proves" that HE is willing that     they should be saved.
If HE were not willing, it would be easy for HIM to     cut them off, & exclude them from hope immediately.
This passage, however, should not be adduced to prove:
[1] that sinners never will in fact perish; because:
[a] the passage does not refer to what GOD will do              as the final Judge of mankind, but to what are              HIS feelings & desires now toward men.
[b] One may have a sincere desire that others              should not perish, & yet it may be that, in entire              consistency with that, they will perish.
A parent has a sincere wish that his children should               not be punished, & yet he himself may be under a               moral necessity to punish them.
A lawgiver may have a sincere wish that no one should               ever break the laws, or be punished, & yet he himself               may build a prison, & construct a gallows, & cause the               law to be executed in a most rigorous manner.
A judge on the bench may have a sincere desire that               no man should be executed, & that everyone arraigned               before him should be found to be innocent, & yet even               he, in entire accordance with that wish, & with a most               benevolent heart, even with tears in his eyes, may               pronounce the sentence of the law.
[c] It cannot be inferred that all that the heart of infinite               benevolence would desire will be accomplished by               HIS mere will.
It is evidently as much in accordance with the               benevolence of GOD that no one should be               miserable in this world, as it is that no one should               suffer in the next, since the difficulty is not in the               question Where one shall suffer,
but in the fact itself that any should suffer; & it is just               as much in accordance with HIS nature that all should               be happy here, as that they should be happy hereafter.
And yet no man can maintain that the fact that               GOD is benevolent proves that no one will suffer here.
As little will that fact prove that               none will suffer in the world to come.
[2] the passage should not be adduced to prove that GOD          has no purpose, & has formed no plan, in regard to the          destruction of the wicked; because:
[a] the word here used has reference rather to HIS              disposition, or to HIS nature, than to any act or plan.
[b] There is a sense, as is admitted by all, in which             HE does will the destruction of the wicked—to wit,             if they do not repent—that is, if they deserve it.
        [c] Such an act is as inconsistent with HIS general             benevolence as an eternal purpose in the matter,             since HIS eternal purpose can only have been             to do what HE actually does;
& if it be consistent with a sincere desire that sinners             should be saved to do this, then it is consistent to             determine beforehand to do it
—for to determine beforehand to do what is in fact             right, can only be a lovely trait in the character of anyone.
    [3] The passage then proves:
        [a] that GOD has a sincere desire that people should be saved;

The LORD is not slack concerning his promise; i.e. doth not defer the fulfilling of it beyond the appointed time, Isaiah 60:22.
As some men count slackness; either the scoffers here mentioned, who, because of CHRIST’s not yet coming, questioned whether he would come at all, as if GOD had changed his purpose, or would not fulfil it: or believers themselves, who, through the weakness of their faith, & greatness of their sufferings, might grow into some degree of impatience, & think CHRIST slow in coming to avenge their cause, & give them their reward. So much may be gathered from Revelation 6:10.
But is long-suffering to usward; to us believers, or us elect.
Not willing that any should perish; any that he hath ordained to life, though not yet called.
But that all should come to repentance; all whom he hath elected; he would have the whole number of them filled up, & defers the day of judgment till it be so: or this may be meant not of GOD’s secret & effectual will, but of his revealed will, whereby he calls all to repentance promiscuously that hear the GOSPEL preached, hath made it their duty, approves of it, hath prescribed it as the way of salvation, commanded them to seek salvation in that way, & is ready to receive & save them upon their repenting: see 1 Timothy 2:4.
Tumblr media
John Gill, Baptist & Calvinist [1697-1771] | 2 Peter 3:9
Tumblr media
The LORD is not slack concerning his promise—The Syriac version reads in the plural, "his promises", any of his promises; though the words seem rather to regard the particular promise of CHRIST's coming, either to take vengeance on the Jewish nation, of which coming there was a promise made, & is often referred to by CHRIST, & his apostles; see Mark 9:1 Hebrews 10:37; & it now being upwards of thirty years since it was given out, some men began to charge GOD with slackness & dilatoriness; whereas the true reason of the delay of it was, that there might be time for the gathering in of his elect among them by his angels, or apostles & ministers, sent into the several parts of Judea, that so none of them might perish, but be brought to faith & repentance; & thus as the time of CHRIST's coming was prolonged more than was thought it would, so when the days of afflictions were come, they were shortened also for these elect's sake: or this promise regards the second coming of CHRIST, to judge the quick & dead at the last day, of which the former was a prelude, presage, & pledge; that CHRIST would come again, & appear a second time in person, was promised by himself, & often spoken of by his apostles; & many of the primitive Christians thought it would be very soon, & which might be occasioned by the hints that were given of his coming in the other sense. Now this being deferred longer than was expected, the scoffers or mockers take upon them to charge the LORD with slackness in the fulfilment of his promise: as some men count slackness; as if he had either changed his purpose, or had prolonged it beyond the appointed time, or was unmindful of his promise, & would never fulfil it; whereas he is in one mind, & none can turn him, nor will he delay the fulfilment of his promise beyond the set time; he has fixed a day for his coming, in which he will judge the world in righteousness, & he will keep it: he is not dilatory,
but is longsuffering to us-ward: not to all the individuals of human nature, for the persons intended by us are manifestly distinguished from "some men" in the text, & from scoffers, mocking at the promise of CHRIST's coming, in the context, 2 Peter 3:3; & are expressly called beloved, 2 Peter 3:1; & GOD's longsuffering towards them is their salvation, 2 Peter 3:15, nor is it true of all men, that GOD is not willing that any of them should perish, & that everyone of them should come to repentance, since many of them do perish in their sins, & do not come to repentance, which would not be the case, if his determining will was otherwise; besides, a society or company of men are designed, to which the apostle himself belonged, & of which he was a part; & who are described, in his epistles, as the elect of GOD, called out of darkness, into marvellous light, & having obtained like precious faith with the apostles; & must be understood either of GOD's elect among the Jews, for Peter was a Jew, & they were Jews he wrote to; & then the sense is, that the delay of CHRIST's coming is not owing to any slackness in him, but to his longsuffering to his elect among the Jews, being unwilling that any of that number among them should perish, but that all of them repent of their sins, & believe in him; & therefore he waits till their conversion is over, when a nation shall be born at once, & they that have pierced him look on him & mourn, & so all Israel shall be saved; or rather of the elect in general, whether among Jews or Gentiles, upon whom the LORD waits to be gracious, & whose longsuffering issues in their conversion & salvation. And upon account of these the LORD stays his coming till their number is complete in the effectual calling; & for their sakes he is longsuffering to others, & bears with a wicked world, with the idolatry, superstition, heresy, profaneness, & impiety, with which it abounds; but when the last man that belongs to that number is called, he will quickly descend in flames of fire, & burn the world, & the wicked in it, & take his chosen ones to himself. The Alexandrian copy reads, "for you", or your sakes; & so the Vulgate Latin, Syriac, & Ethiopic versions. A passage somewhat like to this is met with in a Book of the Jews [f], esteemed by them very ancient.
GOD prolongs or defers his anger with men; & one day, which is a thousand years, is fixed, besides the seventy years he delivered to David the king—And he does not judge man by his evil works which he continually does, for if so, the world would not stand; but the holy blessed GOD defers his anger with the righteous, & the wicked, that they may return, by perfect repentance, & be established in this world, & in the world to come.''
And it is an observation of theirs [g], that when GOD is said to be longsuffering", it is not written , but , intimating, that he is longsuffering both to the righteous & the wicked; but then he bears with the latter, for the sake of the former: compare with this passage Revelation 6:9;
not willing that any should perish; not any of the us, whom he has loved with an everlasting love, whom he has chosen in his SON, & given to him, & for whom he has died, & who are brought to believe in him. These, though they were lost in Adam, did not perish; & though in their own apprehensions, when awakened & convinced, are ready to perish; & though their peace, joy, & comfort, may perish for a while, & they may fear a final & total perishing; yet they shall never perish as others do, or be punished with everlasting destruction: & that this is the will of GOD, appears by his choice of them to salvation; by the provisions of grace for them in an everlasting covenant; by the security of their persons in the hands of CHRIST; by sending his Son to obtain salvation for them, & HIS SPIRIT to apply it to them; & by his keeping them by his power, through faith, unto salvation.
But that all should come to repentance; not legal, but evangelical, without which all must perish; & which all GOD's elect stand in need of, as well as others, being equally sinners; & which they cannot come to of themselves, & therefore he not only calls them to it, in his word, & by HIS SPIRIT & grace, but bestows it upon them; he has exalted CHRIST at his own right hand, to give it to them; & repentance is a grant from him, a free gift of his grace; & the SPIRIT is sent down into their hearts to work it in them, to take away the stony heart, & give an heart of flesh; without which, whatever time & space may be given, or means afforded, even the most awful judgments, the greatest mercies, & the most powerful ministry, will be of no avail.

[8] The LORD is not slack concerning HIS promise,          as some men count slackness; [9] but is          longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any          should perish, but that all should come to repentance.
[8] The LORD will surely come, because HE has promised:          & neither sooner nor later than HE has promised.
[9] A reason why the last day does not come too soon,          because GOD patiently waits until all the elect          are brought to repentance, that none of them may perish.
