The Javelina, or collared peccary, is a pig-like animal found in Texas. Although they may look like pigs, the Javelina is not a pig. Peccaries have small ears and hidden tails, three toes on their back feed, and they have straight tusks. Pigs were introduced to the Americas by Europeans, but peccaries are native animals. They live in family groups which often feature around a dozen individuals (but there have been herds as large as fifty found). They live in desert areas with mixed vegetation, surviving off of a mixture of prickly pear cactus, mesquite beans, and other plant matter (although they will eat small animals if they have the chance - like lizards). This colorful piece makes a wonderful addition to my bright West Texas series. I'm not sure how many more pieces I'll add. I was thinking about calling it at six, but I'm enjoying this series so much I'm thinking about making nine to twelve pieces of art.

We made it way down here in Texas, Big Bend National Park, to be more precise. The landscape is magnificent, and the weather is warm and sunny. It’s hard to imagine that the rest of the country isn’t having a summer's day right now. Big Bend has superb vehicle-based backcountry campsites. Most of these are 10-30 miles down 4WD roads. Solitary sites that make you feel like you have the desert all to yourself. Yesterday we only saw one truck all day. Our Revel van was made for this type of good livin’. Last year I found my dream job in my favoritest place in the world, the Big Bend of Texas. I guide trail rides for Big Bend & Lajitas Stables. The horses I work with are such good trail horses, the office views never get old, and I’m proud to work for this company and alongside a great team of wranglers. Through this job I’ve gotten my WAFA & my WFR certifications and those were such cool courses to take. Big Bend is a tough place to live, but I’m the happiest I’ve ever been and I’m proud of myself in every aspect. I thank God every day I live in such a beautiful place, surrounded by such a diverse group of crazy fun desert people like myself. I love meeting new people every day and introducing them to the world of horses. We take people of all experience, as all of our horses are beginner friendly.
